Software :: Horrendously Slow System - Finding Best Way To Backup And Reinstall Everything?
Feb 5, 2009
I'm running an iMac (one of the all-white, 1.83 GHz C2D machines, with 512MB RAM) and i've noticed in recent months it's become outrageously slow, i have no idea why but it's just horrendous.
I'd really like to start afresh with a clean install of Leopard, but only if it will make a difference.
Currently i'm finding that even with 2 apps open (eg Mail and Safari) there is serious lag now and again, and sometimes things lock up completely. Is this just a bloated OSX install or signs the computer is dying?
Anyway, i have a 180GB backup drive currently used for Time Machine, but if i reinstall then restore from that drive, won't it just restore all the bloat?

I just reinstalled my system on a new system drive and then used the migration assistant to transfer *only* the user accounts and not the settings or applications etc. I wanted (needed) to start relatively clean. The system after all of this is very similar to the original system (same apps, same users, mostly the same settings etc.) and I would like to continue using my old Time Machine back-up if I can, but when I start Time Machine it just wants to create a new back-up and won't recognize the older back-up. I've read up about what to do if you get a new TM disk or if your have your logic board replaced, but this situation seems different. I can't figure out what would appear different to TM about my "new" system.

My Macbook Pro hard drive failed. It is completely unrecoverable. I've purchased a replacement. How do I format the drive, install Lion and restore my system from my Time Machine backup? My Time Machine backup was created from a USB connection directly to my Macbook Pro. I have a Apple Lion USB Install Thumbdrive.

Today, I decided to reinstall Mac OS X Snow Leopard on my iMac, to have a fresh & new copy of Mac OS. I've done this before on my Macbook, and it worked perfectly. The iMac would not read the original Reinstall DVD that came with it. Instead, it would eject it, though it would work it on another Mac. But when I inserted my Snow Leopard disk that I bought separately, it worked.
However, when I entered the reinstall screen, it is extremely slow and I nearly can't use it. I did already use the Disk Utility to erase the hard disk files. So, it is extremely slow, and it wouldn't install either. All I get is the amour of time left, but it doesn't change, just gives me a waiting spinning wheel. It's been stuck on the screen for several hours.
The iMac was bought in January, I believe. What should I do?? This is very weird. Should I take it to the Apple Store, or is there a way to fix it?

I received a new MBP for Christmas. It's a great machine, and I am really liking Mac so far.
I did a reinstall on the OS after about a day of use. I thought it would be a good way to become familiar with the system, as I had been watching all the apple.com tutorial videos trying to become an expert.
Everything seems fine after the reinstall. I deleted the partition, installed the OS/apps, let the updates run, and then renamed the hard drive back to Macintosh HD.
I noticed two things since reinstalling.
#1) Videos seem to load slower (apple tutorials)
#2) They no longer auto-play like they originally did before the reinstall.
Also...
I watched an entire HD stream of South Park with no stuttering prior to the reinstall. Now, I can't even get through 30secs of low quality without buffering.
I checked on my PC, and none of these issues are happening so it's not an internet thing.
How can I fix/change this?

I've a beloved Powerbook G4 from 2005, one of the last, and am running Leopard upgraded from Tiger. It's cpu etc from the hardware info page:

Available:15.54 GB
Writable:Yes
File System:Journaled HFS+
BSD Name:disk0s3It's long in the tooth now I know, but I've never had it crash and am loathe to upgrade simply for the sake of it, but recently it's had growing problems that I'd love to hear some advice on. It's been running hotter and hotter every year, and whilst I live in the outback it never used to singe my lap the way it does now. I installed Leopard a few months ago and realise that a new OS can have it working harder, but even since then it's been getting worse and worse with greatly shortened battery life too. During the day I've taken to plonking it upon one of those squishy icepacks with a teatowel around it to keep it cool....................

My MPB is having issues (it doesn't actually go to sleep, so when i come to use it, the battery is totally drained) and i want to backup everything before I take it into AppleCare, but I'm worried about some of my programs...
for example: I have Senuti on my computer (0.50.01). When I downloaded it, it was a free program. Now, the version that is out cost around $18 (i think). The old version I am using works fine for me, and I downloaded it free and legally--I don't want the new version.

I installed windows through bootcamp and partitioned my hard drive to about a 300Gb/600Gb windows and mac respectively. After a while i decided to remove the windows partition. As I was repartitioning the Hard Drive through disk utility my mac froze and went to a gray screen so I restarted it. Disk utility says that the process finished however it does not recognise the 300Gb I used for windows. i.e. Disk utility says there is one partition, and that the total capacity is about 1Tb.
However the spaced used and space available adds up to 600Gb, its like the mac thinks that it is repartitoned to just 1, but not allowing me to acces that 300Gb. so my question is how do i completely strip back the hard drive to basic factory settings (iv backed up all my data to an external drive) so I can reinstall the mac operating system and repair the drive to make use of its full capacity, then re install from my backed up external drive.

I have a hard drive with bad blocks. I backup the data and various other part of the drive to the cloud. However, I want to make a backup of the entire disk but want to be able to access all the data individually as I want to transfer the data onto a new HD and the applications/fonts etc onto an SSD. Also, is it advisable to literally copy the contents of the Applications folder across to the new SSD drive or should they really be re-installed one by one (yikes!)?

I have a macbook pro and a while ago I decided to free up unused programs. I deleted Automator because I figured I would never need to use it, Im rather hesitant about running scripts.
Anyway, now I find myself needing to run a script to tweak over a thousand pictures; I have the exact script needed but no way to use it.
I can't find a download for the actual program, all I get are downloads for scripts for automator; it's really giving me a headache.
I read another thread here from way back in 2005 about finding it on the OS disc, unfortunately I do not have the Leopard disc because my MBP was given to me by my school as part of a technology thing.

I got the fatal folder with with question mark and grinding sound of the hard drive when starting my 2008 Mac Pro this weekend. After some diagnostics it was obvious the Hard Drive is dead, of course its the main drive that runs the OS and all my apps. I am picking up a new drive today and was wondering the best approach to get it up and running again. Everying it is backed-up on my external drive through Time Machine. Since the drive is dead I can't use a copy cloner to the new drive. Would I install the the hardrive and start the Mac Pro to boot off the Leopard CD, intall that and then try to run the backup from Time Machine?

upgraded my from Leopard to Snow Leopard when it first came out, but for whatever reason my system has been running somewhat sluggishly since I upgraded (My Macbook Pro is more than capable of running either)
I want to do a clean install of Snow Leopard.
Could I just copy all of my music files, documents etc to my BootCamp partition, then reformat and install Snow Leopard on the other partition? Or does it wipe the entire drive?

Since upgrading to Lion I've experienced periodic crashes- my 24" iMac (2.93 GHz Core 2 Duo with 4GB memory) suddenly shut down using iPhoto, Safari, and/or Pages. After running numerous hardware diagnostic tests I was told it was not a hardware problem, and a complete reinstall of Lion and all Apple software was recommended. I had back-ups on a My Book which I thought I could easily use to restore my personal data. I was directed to drag files between Finder windows rather than try to restore from backup via Time Machine. All was well & good until I tried to restore my numerous mail folders and locally-saved emails.
Evidently Mail is a hidden folder... I've been told by user group buddies how to see the hidden Mail folder on my iMac, but not on the My Book. Trying to restore from back-up via Time Machine is not an option, as I guess it doesn't recognize the newly installed system. Also tried going into Mail and importing, but when I navigate to the backup there is no visible Mail folder. Another suggestion was to try 3rd party software i.e. Back in Time or BackUp Loupe. I keep thinking there's some secret key combination, some easy way I just don't know of to retrieve my Mail data from the backup... is there???

I've got a Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard installed, but it has been going sort of sluggish lately so I've decided to do a clean reinstall of Snow Leopard to try and improve things. I've got an up-to-date backup with Time Machine to my Time Capsule. When I do a clean install of Snow Leopard, will I be able to easily restore the files that I want to keep and the applications that I want to put back on my system (with their settings)?

I know that a lot of people were asking about wether they should upgrade or install SL. So, when I put in the disk, it said to shutdown and restart so that it could install the OS. Anyways, I just wanted to know if it was normal that I didn't have any choices as to if I wanted to make just an upgrade or a complete installation of SL. I thought I was going to lose my stuff on my HD, but everything is still there like if nothing happened. The thing is... I kind of wanted to have everything erased and do a clean install.

my system preferences froze on me a couple weeks ago while i was trying to change my screen saver. i've forced quit the program and computer, but when i boot back up, and reopen system preferences it opens up where it froze in the backgrounds settings. yesterday i shot down to see my buddy at future shop and he tried a few things and nothing changed. he called apple and they said this issue has come up a few times now. they recomended to delete a few uneeded files in the program or reinstalling the operating system. we deleted the files and nothing happened. so he told me how to reinstall the OS. i said goodbye because he left for cuba today. now i have time to do the reinstall and dont remember how he said to do this.

I downloaded it to my Mac (years ago!).. The Cover Flow option refuses to work with me, as rather than showing cover art for each album, it shows it for each song. This causes several duplicates showing up for each album, while browsing on Cover Flow only!I've gone through my Music - iTunes folder multiple times, cleaning through duplicates items and so on. I don't know if iTunes Libraries stored on my Mac is causing this (iTunes Database File).

I want to restore and recover OSX & Logic 8 and the software i use with it (Apogee Maestro,UAD Quad & Waves plug-ins) to a new boot disk. I have both a back up of the main OS drive on a drive with Time Machine and a disk copy of the main drive (on another) as i had it before the boot disk crashed. My question is which is the best option to take when restoring the OS etc? As I have heard that there is a couple of bugs and issues when restoring via Time Machine. Is restoring via the disk copy a simple procedure? Or, should i reinstall everything completely from scratch and copy back the receipts and authorizations perhaps? Can you point me towards the best link/method to get my setup back on track? i'm using an apogee symphony pci card

I have an Imac 5,1 2.16 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo running Mac OS X version 10.4.11 and am fairly new to Mac. I made the cardinal sin of not leaving all of the pc world behind me when I made the switch to Mac and one day after examining my software, I noticed what appeared to be an excessive amount of folders containing only 1 or 2 photos apiece, scattered throughout the system. I got the bright idea to "tidy up " a bit so I created a folder where I could easily find it, and moved the single pix there and then deleted the original folders. My mistake was soon obvious, when the slideshows I had created in Iphoto would not work and some pictures were missing.
My problem is this: I bought the computer used and it came with nothing but the main unit , the mouse, and keyboard. I found a fix to the Iphoto problem, but it requires the original system disk which I do not have. I do however have a factory Mac OS X Tiger disc from an old powermac G3 I have. I was wondering if that disc would work to reinstall Iphoto? If so, are there any special instructions to get it to work? And lastly, if it doesn't work what are my next best options?

About a year ago I deleted Photo Booth. I somehow found a link to get it back, and it worked perfectly, but when I quit Photo Booth, I lost it. I could never find the link since. I have been looking for something desperately, but I have only found answers that have said "use your install CD". I got my Mac pre-used so I did not get it with any CD.
