Software :: Download Speed But No Progression In Torrent?
Oct 22, 2008
I got my new aluminum macbook today, it is my first mac. on my pc i used utorrent, and i am currently *attempting* to use limewire for torrents on my mac.. the problem is that even though there is a download speed, single digit kb/s, there is no progression.. the torrents are still at 0% . if someone can help me work it through limewire, or suggest a different app to use for torrents.
I recently purchased my first Mac computer, a MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo processor. I receive free internet included in my apartment rent, and I don't use a router, instead I simply plug into the wall. I previously used a Toshiba laptop with Windows Vista and there was no problems. I am not very knowledgeable about computers really, especially when it comes to the internet. I need advice on how to speed my downloads, but speak to me like you would 2 y/o.
I can't seem to find anything that applies to me or I can understand. I'm currently using Transmission for torrents and Safari for browsing, but my general internet connection outside of downloads seems to be fine.
I'm using Transmission, and it seems that the speeds that I'm getting are up to 150K DL and 80K UL. From what I've heard around other speed problem posts in various forums, these are pretty decent speeds. Now, pardon if I'm a little naive on this topic, but according to shaw, my max speeds should be around 7.5MG and 512K.
Now downloading I can understand. Not everyone has a super fast connection, and my max download speed is limited by whoever's max upload speed, so 150K sounds alright. I also understand that you never actually reach your max speeds even on the third monday of a March (March is the only month with no stat holidays in Canada) at 4:30 in the morning. But 80K (usually around 30K or 40K) upload speed? Most bargain bin internet connections have at the least a 256K download speed, so my upload speeds should be at least averaging around 100K. What's especially frustrating, is when I look at my completes, and see that there are other peers downloading, yet that torrent only sporadically uploads at all.
Now I've checked, and I do have the latest version (1.5) of Transmission, and yes, my port is open. Is there some way to juice some extra speed out of this, or is this just the way torrents work?
I've got a real odd problem with safari 4. For some reason it is cutting my download speeds in about 1/2 from my server and many other places.
If I restart safari I will be able to download close to my 18 Mbps for a little bit but then it will just start to slow down and after about 30 minutes it will be down to about 6 - 8 Mbps.
I have never tried downloading using a torrent app but I think I want to try one. I looked at one (can't remember the name) last year but it looked too complicated and had some bad reviews so I dropped that idea. Running Tiger on an intel iMac.
When downloading small files online they will download through Speed Download. Before I installed Speed Download it would just download through the regular downloading client. How do I change it back to using the regular one as standard? I use firefox btw
Here is the real problem that we (MAC OS X) users are facing now.
1- The MACINTOSH HD, is already formatted with Mac OS Extended (Journaled). BUT, I installed bit torrent and whenever I want to download a torrent file for movie or something bigger than 4GB it refused as discussed above. WHY?? In my opinion, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is also not supporting files larger than 4G?? if this is right .....Damn to MAC then.
2- I thought to myself, why don't I install windows XP by boot camp, and solve this problem??, but Boot camp request you to format the partition for windows with FAT32 so you can read the files when you are in MAC system, but this does not solve the problem as we still can not install files larger than 4GB. !!
3- Even if we format the external HDs with NTFS, MAC OS X will only read them and won't save on them or amend them, So we still can not install torrent files larger than 4GB. !! (Remember FAT 32 can not read NTFS, this means that the installed version of windows by Boot camp (FAT32) can not see the external HD which is formatted as NTFS, also MAC can only read it but NOT amending or saving.
4- What is the best solution regarding the information I have posted above. Please note I am using MacBook Pro 13" with Mac OS X.
Apple allowed us to install windows versions on Mac Computer but they did not solve the problems of the large files, especially files are getting bigger day by day, and also I can not understand why Mac OS Extended (Journaled) can not also read and write and save files larger than 4GB
Whenever I'm downloading any torrent larger than a GB my mac crashes after reaching 100MB and then a white screen appears saying" Your computer ran into a problem and needed to restart. Press any key or wait for a few seconds to start." And does this only when downloading a torrent larger than 1GB.
Tomato Torrent, BitTorrent AND Transmission are not downloading torrents. I've tried them all on many different files and not one single torrent file is working on any of the programs.
Tomato says: "Last Error: Tracker announce still not complete 180 seconds after starting it, (at Mon Sep 14 '09 @ 10:12:24 PM)" OR "Last Error: Problem connecting to tracker - <urlopen error (60, 'Operation timed out')>, (at Mon Sep 14 '09 @ 10:13:09 PM)"
There seems to be a problem with connecting to tracker, however I have been using Tomato for months and it has worked perfectly in the past.
I just started to use 10mbps instead of my old 1mbps. But it looks like I'm having some issues. First of all I'm using the port 27960 for bitTorrent and it is properly forwarded. (I have a Tilgin modem, it was really hard to forward). I was using uTorrent app with my 1mbps internet and it was doing fine. I was able to download at full speed (100kB/s). But when I changed my ISP things started to change.
The Test: -I'm downloading 5 of the most popular torrent files. My friends with the same ISP as me can download these torrents 2MB/s at their homes. -I'm using Vuze, uTorrent and Transmission as the torrent app. On all applications my Port seems to be open. I have green light. On Vuze; -It is a little complicated for me. And it hangs usually. So I'm not using it. On uTorrent; -My download speeds up to max 250-300kB/s (Total download, not per torrent.) On Transmission; -Well, this is the strangest. My download speed goes up to 700kB/s. But it goes like 5kB/s, 15kB/s, 3kB/s, 1kB/s, 400kB/s, 600kB/s, 3kB/s. Slowest speed for a second and highest for another. It doesn't stand still. It goes up and down continuously.
So I had a phone call to my ISP and they said there is no problem with the lines. Than, I tested with "speedtest.net" and "speakeasy.net/speedtest/". All turned out perfect! (9.7mbps to 10.1mbps) Than I tested real download speed with Firefox.[URL] It is downloading with 980kB/s. Perfect again. But when it comes to torrents, something goes wrong. I'm not using any antivirus or firewall.
I generally get about 700kbs download speed, which is what my ISP (Sky uk) tells me I SHOULD have, but they also tell me that my router upload speed should be similar and it's not anywhere close to it.
While poking around on youtube I found Steve Jobs presenting the Cube in 2000. Seems like it was the mid level headless Mac people call for on the Internet. I wonder is there any interest macrumors? I like the Cube design and the way you were able to access the guts was very cool. Some have written that the Mini IS the natural progression of the Cube but I think the Mini is too locked down. It would be nice to make drive swapping a little more user friendly and maybe have a PCI slot (or two) available. Maybe even the ability to upgrade CPU/GPU. Think of it as a Mac for people who can't leave well enough alone but can't afford a Pro.
I am sorry if i have posted this in the wrong topic, i'm not sure where this would go. I am trying to download a file off the internet, but my download speed is only 12 kb/s on average (Sometimes it will go up to 13 and sometimes down to 9). I have every application that could be using internet turned off and still no help. I have also set my utorrent to unlimited download speed but it still stays on 12! I have a good router so i don't think thats the problem. What am i doing wrong? Is there a program i can use to speed it up?
This may be MacHeist related... . I was just curious as to what the consensus is regarding these two download managers/accelerators. If you were being offered iGetter for say... $10 and Speed Download 5 for... I don't know... $15, which would you get?
Lately, my download speed has been unacceptably slow. Could I have downloaded some spyware or something by accident? Can you get anything like this from just being on a website or do you have to download and install it?
From various parts of the house my download speed (wireless) varies from 19 mb down to 3 mb. It relates directly to signal strength. Is this normal or do I have some problem with the system?
After many years on PC's, I just got myself a 21.5 iMac. Everthing is great so far except for my ftp downloads. Last week on my pc the download speeds would vary from 2 to 12 Mbs per second depending on conditions. Now on the iMac I am lucky to get .5 to 1 mbs. Could some longtime Mac user share a few tips on network settings to improve my ftp downloads?? I ran the speed test on my Comcast support site... and it showed my download speed as 23Mbs.Â

I'm running the macbook pro 2,3 GHz intel core i5 version 10.6.8. Me and my friend are on the same wifi connection, but his macbook (thats 1 year older than mine) downloads 10 times faster. I'm getting around 0.24 Mbps while my friend gets around 1,8 Mbps. My internet is really slow and I have trouble opening a lot of internet sites. I wonder if ive done something to my settings so that the download limit is limited or something.

My laptop is fully up-to-date, with not a large amount of programs on it. There is plenty of hardrive space because I took all of my music off, but nothing seems to work. I've had it for 4 1/2 years. Any recommended software (or even do-it-yourself) ideas to clean the system up and speed it up?
It started 2 months ago, ever since I got my machine back from the top case being replaced. I've had some Airport problems, the first thing is distance. I used to be able to go all over the place in the house and it worked. It says I have a full signal strength, but it's it and miss on it working from my living room (which is really only 3 rooms away with not very thick walls). I used to be able to sit in the living room and work on my computer for hours, but like I said it's it and miss on the connection. One minute it's working the next it's not.
Another room that seems to be the bedroom, which basically 2 rooms away but can see the router down the hall thing. The bedroom door opens to those two rooms. Here it works, but I sometimes have to wait up to 3 or 4 minutes the web page to come up. Safari 5.02 is the worse compared to Fire Fox.
My download speeds have decreased as well, my top download speed is 160k/sec but lately it's been 140k-120k/sec.
Now that I have giving you too much information, do you think it might be the MacBook or the Router. When they where putting the new top case on it could they moved the Airport antenna somehow. OR should I reinstall Mac OS X thinking that might fix the problem.
I am a new Mac user. I bought a 27" iMac today to replace a dead PC. My download speeds are AWFUL on the Mac. While using the PC, my maximum download speed on a 6 mbit connection was over 850kb/sec. Now, with the mac, I can barely manage 250K/sec downloads. I am using all the same equipment and cables as before (not using the wireless, and I have it disabled), and if I plug in another PC into my router, it will get the 850+kb/sec download speeds, no problem at all. Is there a setting somewhere that I can change to get things working properly? Poor speeds occur no matter what program I am downloading from, whether it be Safari, FTP, or whatever. I just installed parallels, with windows, and I can download at my old speeds. How do I do it in native Mac mode then?
Ok so i am using a macbook running snow leopard and up until recently my internet has been fast. download speeds at about 360 kb/s. Then this morning my download speed plummeted to about 15 kb/s. I have tried everything to fix this and have found no solution. The problem is in both firefox and safari. I am using wireless network for internet.
But if i come to download something on my Mac or Xbox, it is slow as fudge :P
I am downloading the update for BFBC 2 on xbox atm, and it has taken me half an hour to do 14% and it took my mate (who lives about 10 min walk away from me) about 20 mins to complete the whole thing...
My iMac desktop has a download speed of 2mbps. My Mac book Pro is at 17Mbps at the same time. This seems to have started when I upgraded to Lion. It is a Wi-Fi connection?
I'm using a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo imac with 3GB memory running OS 10.5.8. I've been using mac mail at home, work and on the move for years and have only ever had a couple of minor problems with it. However last Friday, after using it normally in the office, I went out, leaving the machine to sleep. When I came back my mail wouldn't download past message number 7 and it said there were 400+ emails to download when it should have been maximum 10. I tried to shut down mail but every time I tried to shut it down it wouldn't shut down.
I had to 'force quit' even though 'force quit' didn't say 'not responding' alongside mail. When I reopened mail the number of 'new' messages dropped to only 170 odd, but still I can't get past the 10th email and the download speed goes to zero. Also I can't delete some existing messages in my inbox. They go light grey but don't delete. I am able to use mail as normal on my home mac which uses mail with the same account settings as my office mac. I can also access my emails via my iPhone and webmail.
When I right click some links in Webkit / Safari I see an option to "Download with Speed Download". In the app itself though I see no options for contexual menu items. Can anyone direct my blind ass to where I can turn this off? I've "completely disabled the Safari plugin" but I'm not sure that's it.
