PowerPC :: Wants To Buy IBook G3 Charger?
Jul 2, 2008
does anyone know where i can find a charger for an iBook G3??? This is kind of an emergency, my macally charger won't charge the ibook anymore and my imac is at the genius bar for the 4 days . I'm on my second Macally charger , so any brand besides macally would be fine.

The charger for my ibook just decided to die, It has not worked like it should lately because it's beginning to break around the area where it connects to the mac.
Anyways.. when it died i noticed a tiny bit of smoke coming from either the charger or the ibook. Will things be ok again if i just buy a new charger or is the thing inside the computer fried?

Is it possible to use a G4 PowerBook (3 years old) charger on a 7 year old G3 iBook? Or will the higher power PB charger blow the iBook up?

I bought a G4 14" iBook yesterday from Ebay but unfortunately the cable just after the charger plug is so baddly frayed that the light and power flickers on and off all the time. This makes it almost unusable. It is so close to the plug that it is not possible to repair the break.
I am wonder if anyone has a broken PSU(charger) that still has a good working plug that they would be willing to sell/donate to me.I would only require the plug and a few inches of the cable (so will be cheap to post). This way I can cut the plug of mine and join it with a working one. I am asking this as apposed to merely buying a new one as I am a student and already need to buy a new battery, ram upgrade and Airport Extreme card.

I have an snow iBook G3 that I use everyday as my machine for doing schoolwork etc., so it is a very critical machine. The battery doesn't hold a charge anymore, so I just plug it in. No big deal. However, just a few hours ago the iBook started to not recognize it was plugged in. The prong has always been bent a bit, I think, and it always worked (before MagSafe type). The charger is beat up at the cord going into the power brick from the wall outlet, but it has always worked too and it seems to be a problem with the prong going into the computer. I have to hold it a very certain way for it to even detect power. So, the machine has NO way to get any power. I was thinking about taking it in to the Apple store to see if they could still get me a non-magsafe charger, but what if its something different then the charger?
The specs are as follows:
12 inch iBook
PowerPC G3
500 mhz
128 gb RAM
I have a Vista laptop I can use until its fixed, but I'd rather not use Windows. No speical prgrams or anything, I just really like Mac OSX. I have files on the iBook, too.

My iBook charger has stopped working, the iBook is well out of warranty by now, and i cant find any replacement chargers for it. Instead of just buying another one, will apple replace my current one? It was sparking on the cable that plugs into the computer and it looks like its been burnt, which is probobly why it doesn't work anymore, is this a defect with apples chargers and will they replace it even though my iBook is out of warranty?

I got a 12" 1.2ghz ibook g4, macally charger just went south.I got about 2 hours of charge left before all hope is lost!I am currently on an AF base, I might be leaving on july 21st. I have a PO box(i think that makes a difference) so i need to make a quick decision.
Ibook G4 is aging, needs a ram and HD upgrade and a new DC in board (again) I want to get a macbook pro when 10.6 comes out and give this one to my sister. So now that i have a reason to buy off line, i could knock 2 birds out with 1 stone and buy the upgrades and charger at the same time. However, the cost of buying the upgrades and what not is about the same as buying a new PC netbook. I really only need internet though. Im a little reluctant to dump $200-$250 into this thing though. So i am trying to go cheap but reliable here. I heard the micro accessories one from ifixit it over heats and makes a humming sound.
I just had a macally charger and it just broke. I read on amazon.com that they changed the design so it works with the ibook but it wont last very long, maybe a few months. its also 40 watts.
The OWC one seems like an off brand macally charger.
There are two Newer technologies chargers that look the same but have different part numbers, not sure what that means.
Could one of you mac gurus point me in the right direction, away from the cheap net books? I just want a reliable charger. Ill pay a little more if I have to. I know the 65w chargers handle the load better, but do they hurt the batteries? I know charging some lithium batteries too fast is real bad.

I have a 1.33 GHz PowerPC G4 (1.2) version 10.4.11 ibook that was purchased in May or June of 2005. Lately, out of the blue, the power chord has stopped working.
The light that indicates the computer is charging goes on for a second and then promptly turns off and stays off; the laptop is then running on battery power; it is almost dead.
When it tries to connect (before turning off) it makes a sound like a lightbulb that is flickering and trying not to die.
This could be an outlet problem, I suppose (I will have my dorm check on that), but think it might have gotten fried when I was home for christmas because our house has ancient outlets and I usually have to use the two prong adapter there.

I have a G3 iBook and just the other day the display stopped working. There were no signs of the display going bad, it's just went. Am I able to boot the iBook via Target Disk Mode on my PowerBook and run the iBook Hardware Test CD on it? Also, can I reboot my PowerBook and choose the iBook as the startup volume?
I know how to do Target Disk Mode but the latter I'm not sure about.

My brother's iBook G4 (800Mhz, First Rev) has completely splattered itself and we're getting a new Macbook for him under insurance. My iBook G3 (White, 900Mhz G3..the last G3 Rev of the iBook) has a failing hard drive.
Now, could I swap out those two drives, at least to recover stuff? And is there a specific method of opening up the iBook G4 so that I don't break stuff (I've already messed with my G3..and ended up with a dozen extra screws ^_^
Mainly the aim is to salvage the hard drive and swap them out; replacing my faulty iBook G3 one with the iBook G4 one which is perfectly fine.

My charger has died an uncomfortable death (burned itself due to a short in the cable). I'm looking at getting a replacement, and bought one on ebay which turned out not to be as described and didn't work properly, so it has been returned. I'm looking at this one, and the seller tells me it's a 65w charger, but there should be no problem with it, despite the PB being rated for a 45w charger. Anyway, the question is, will this charger work with my 12" PowerBook, or do I have to keep looking? I'm trying to conserve power now.

So I've had the iBook for almost 3 years now and the charger seems to flick on and off. Sometimes I'll have to rotate the plug or twist the cord in a certain way in order to get the charge going.
Obviously, I'm past my free 1 year coverage by Apple so I was wondering if anyone would be able to tell me if this is an issue with the charger or the laptop.
The charger shows no wear and tear, the cord and all the pieces are still intact, nothing has fallen off or come apart.
Are there any tests I can run to see where the problem lies?

Right now I have a G3 iBook (900 MHz, 640 MB RAM, Combodrive, 40 GB HDD). I'm looking at a G4 iBook (1.2 GHz, 768 MB RAM, Superdrive, 60 GB HDD).
How much faster would the G4 be over my G3. I figure that after selling my G3, the G4 would only be another $200ish on top of it. Would this be worth it?

I just bought a parts ibook from ebay, but I managed to fix it, except there was no hard drive. I currently have a 6 GB HD in it with OS X.3.9 on it, but I want tiger. I have the tiger family pack, so I have a license for it. It only has a CD-ROM drive, so I am wondering if I can buy a 40 GB HD, and clone the one from my G4 onto it.

192 MB RAM
CD-ROM
currently has 6 GB HD
ibook G4- 1064 MHZ
1.25 GB RAM

I've still got my old PBG4 around after upgrading to my new MBP.
The wattage rating on my old adapter is actually higher than my new MBP, 65W for the old one vs. 60W on the new.
But the plug is different. Does anyone make an old-style PB round DC plug>magsafe adapter so that I can use the old charger with the new laptop?
Since these things are like $80 it'd be nice to just keep using the old one or at least have it as a spare. It's not that I really need one but if I could buy an adapter it would be convenient.

I have two ac charger cords for my PB - the one it came with and a backup. My battery is about three months old and seems to be very healthy. The problem is that the cord arbitrarily stops charging (thought it was the cord, used the backup - same thing happens). The light on the cord where it plugs in to the computer goes off and I must unplug it from the power source and replug for it to start charging again, which it always does. I thought it was the outlet on the surge protector, so I switched outlets. No improvement. I thought then that it might be the surge protector itself, so I plugged it directly into another outlet, to no avail.

My Powerbook G4 only turns on if the battery charger is plugged in, and if I unplug it, the computer shuts off. On the menu bar, it says charging. I know the battery has to be full. This just started happening last night. Also, I just had the hard drive replaced and I've only had it back for a couple weeks.

I have a 17" PB with a couple of growing issues. Right now I am unable to use it for one of several reasons. About a year ago I purchased a charger off of Ebay to replace the original one that started sparking. Shortly after I received the new charger I started having issues with the charger connecting. I would have to twist it and turn it to find the right spot. Now, it doesn't glow green or amber at all. That sweet spot is completely gone. Also, the battery is completely dead. It needs to be replaced. Not sure at this point if I'm sitting on a dead charger or if I need to replace the DC-In board. I have never had a major accident with the machine but I do recall snagging the chord once or twice. It is possible something was damaged inside when that happened. I've never had an issue like this so I'm not too sure about the symptoms. I'm thinking a new charger would be the cheapest and safest start. I don't feel very confident purchasing one from Ebay again.

So, I'll spare you guys the details, haha, but I am stuck trying to decide between getting an iMac Intel or a MacBook Pro for my home use computer. What would be the advantages of one over the other? I just really love the fact that a MacBook Pro would be portable yet powerful. And yes, I have this iBook for portability to school and such, but if I want to do extensive work on the couch, I could bring a MBP vs. an iMac. What do you all think? Are too laptops redundant?
