I've just switched from an iBook to a MB. My iBook always displayed 4 bars of wifi here at home (my wireless router is in the same room). But my MacBook often displays only 3 bars in the same room. What could be causing this?

View 1 Replies View Relatedmy teacher asked me to help him with a wireless internet problem. (I'm the only one who knows anything about Macs.) His iBook used to be able to connect to the school's wireless, but up until the techie "changed something with the wireless" he hasn't be able to get on. The iBook is the dual-USB version 700 MHZ G3 with 10.3.9 installed. He states that it will connect at other places, like his house or coffee shops. I don't know what could be wrong. I'm guessing it has something to do with a different kind of WiFi signal. The iBook gen he owns has 802.11b.
View 1 Replies View RelatedJust installed an Airport Extreme card in an iBook G4 (running Panther). Signal strength within a few feet of the wireless router (Netgear) is usually high to medium. But when I leave the room it's in the signal drops all the sudden. I haven't had much experience with wireless networking, so I'm not that familiar with this. We do have a lot of cables and wires related to the computers in the main room where the router is, could that be "blocking" the signal from outside that room?
View 6 Replies View RelatedRecently my dad inherited an iBook G4. The Airport works, but it seems to accept the signal broadcast from only one of the two wireless access points in the house. The two routers are being used to extend the coverage, i.e. iStumbler and Airport Radar show two entries, both with the same ID.
My Macbook is fine; I can move from one end of the house to the other and signal remains high. The iBook's signal gets weaker as it moves from the router on that side of the house. Is this a hardware issue (specifcally, the iBook's Airport), or is there a way to specify which access point to use?
Have connected with the wifi connection, and the bars are there. But it is not working in safari or anything else.

I am using a August 2007 black macbook with airport extreme using 10.4.11 I am using a neighbors wireless network that is WPA. I live in Senegal and my computer is American, and I have heard that this might cause problems because of hardware. But the wifi connection works, it just bounces from full bars to no bars, spends a lot of time at 1 bar, and then when the connection drops and I try to rejoin the network, it says that there was an error. Sometimes, the network won't even show up. After long stretches of time trying to rejoin the network only to find an error, it will suddenly work. I have tried using interference robustness and relocating my computer. The router is just one floor above me, and when it was being installed (before they applied the pw) I had full bars. I think this is a mac problem because my host sister's PC does not seem to be experiencing problems. Also, due to the nature of the wifi (it belongs to my moroccan neighbors).
View 2 Replies View Relatedall threads are outdated from 2006 and 2007 as far as I looked, or has a different issue. My macbook is a 2009 model running 10.6.4, using a linksys router, signal will drop for no reason. The bars are full, but nothing will connect. NO messenger, web browser, or downloading software will work, like its dead. This usually happens if I keep my computer on over night for huge downloads (1GB+).To fix this, I just have to click on the airport icon on the top right corner of my screen, choose disconnect, wait 3 seconds, then choose reconnect and it will work again.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm back at my dad's place for the summer and I'm trying to connect to his house's wireless connection on my MacBook. It seems to connect okay when I type in our 10-digit password next to "WEP 40/128-bit hex" in the drop-down menu, but then even with full signal bars, it loads browser pages very slowly if ever, usually just giving me a timeout error and it's the same thing across all programs, my instant messenger takes forever to connect, WoW takes forever to connect, if ever, basically the internet I get from this connection is useless. It's odd because both my sisters have MacBooks and the internet works fine for them at my dad's house when they connect, and MY internet on my computer works perfectly when I'm using any WiFi but this one. By the way, the transmitter is a "D-Link 514 2.4GHz Wireless Router" and we're connected to cable internet.

* I have tried resetting the router and that didn't help.
* I have tried changing the channel, authentication method and password and that didn't help.
* I tried a DNS troubleshooting guide and it doesn't appear to be a problem with that.
"This page can't be displayed because your computer is currently offline" - what exactly does that mean? I've gone through and repaired by hard drive, and there didn't seem to be a problem there. I've manually entered in an IP address several times...and I've checked that there are no proxies selected.

I acquired a gimped Powerbook G4 from one of our 'daughter' companies. The laptop works fine when using the A/C adapter. If I unplug the A/C adapter while the power is on, the screen/keyboard lights will go off. However, the hard drive is still spinning. If I plug the A/C adapter back in, the LCD backlight comes back on, but it does not display what was on the screen. I have to hold the power button down for a few seconds to power it down completely. Upon turning it back on, everything works fine again. Does this sound like a battery issue or motherboard problem? I have checked the battery serial number against the recall list and this one is supposably good.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a G3 iBook and just the other day the display stopped working. There were no signs of the display going bad, it's just went. Am I able to boot the iBook via Target Disk Mode on my PowerBook and run the iBook Hardware Test CD on it? Also, can I reboot my PowerBook and choose the iBook as the startup volume?
I know how to do Target Disk Mode but the latter I'm not sure about.
My brother's iBook G4 (800Mhz, First Rev) has completely splattered itself and we're getting a new Macbook for him under insurance. My iBook G3 (White, 900Mhz G3..the last G3 Rev of the iBook) has a failing hard drive.
Now, could I swap out those two drives, at least to recover stuff? And is there a specific method of opening up the iBook G4 so that I don't break stuff (I've already messed with my G3..and ended up with a dozen extra screws ^_^
Mainly the aim is to salvage the hard drive and swap them out; replacing my faulty iBook G3 one with the iBook G4 one which is perfectly fine.
My iBook G4 power supply failed and I'm awaiting a replacement. In the mean time, can I use the power supply from my iBook G3 with the iBook G4?

How much faster would the G4 be over my G3. I figure that after selling my G3, the G4 would only be another $200ish on top of it. Would this be worth it?
I just bought a parts ibook from ebay, but I managed to fix it, except there was no hard drive. I currently have a 6 GB HD in it with OS X.3.9 on it, but I want tiger. I have the tiger family pack, so I have a license for it. It only has a CD-ROM drive, so I am wondering if I can buy a 40 GB HD, and clone the one from my G4 onto it.

What would be the advantages of one over the other? I just really love the fact that a MacBook Pro would be portable yet powerful. View 1 Replies View RelatedIt just came to my mind that at some storage place of mine, I have an old special edition (grey) iBook that i bought in 1999, if I remember correctly. Can't look it up right now, but I think it had one USB port, one ethernet port, a CD-ROM drive, and it was running OS9.
Is anyone of you still using old iBooks, and what for? Would a version (which?) of OS X run, or would you suggest staying with OS9? Kind of sad to have it just laying around - it was amazing, back in the days.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI had my iBook G4 a few years ago, and since I was about eleven when I had it, I'm not sure I always took the best care of it, but it's always worked pretty much fine up until about a week ago. It's started shutting down randomly. It also sometimes randomly goes to sleep in the middle of things. In particular, it doesn't seem to like starting up, or the internet, especially if I'm on youtube. I've tried a PMU reset, as it worked once before when my laptop wouldn't start up, but it hasn't worked properly. It's worked from anywhere from a minute from the time I start up again, to about a day or two at most, but it always seems to shut down again.
I really don't know what else to do with it... and I don't understand how computers work at all.
Yesterday I was on facebook when my ibook g4 went black and turned off. There wasn't any beeping/flashing or anything but it won't turn on. When I press the little button on the battery 5 yellow lights light up so I guess the battery's fine but the laptop itself just died. If i can't get it fixed mum won't buy me a new one and i'll just have to deal with it.

A couple of weeks ago, out of the blue, my Ibook 12" started turning off by itself.
At first it would turn on again, I was able to check the HD with the Disk Utility, which reported a fault in the HD. Then after a few times it wouldn't turn on anymore. I couldn't hear the chimes sound and the fan (or HD) would start running pretty fast.
