Hardware :: New MBP Shuts Off And Restarts When Goes Into Sleep Mode?
Nov 2, 2008
When I leave my new MBP alone for 2-3 hours, it shuts down and restarts, and when I wake it I am sent to the password login screen, when I enter my password the system starts like I just booted up. In energy saver preferences I have Computer Sleep set to never and display sleep set to 30 mins. Why is my computer restarting?

I have never had a Mac Pro before, but I have owed 2 Imac's and a power mac and 2 MacBooks. The issue I am having is when I put the machine to sleep when I wake it back up it is like it does a restart. It does not start me back up where I was before.

My iMac G5 (rev A) shuts down immediately after i put it to sleep mode after just starting up the computer. The longer the computer has been on before I put it to sleep, the longer it takes for the computer to shut down while in sleep mode. I already did the hardware test and it said there were no problems.

As of last night, my MBP started acting very strangely. After entering my username and password, it would enter the desktop for a short period of time and then kick back into sleep mode; the screen would turn back to black. Sometimes it will let me stay on the desktop for a long time and other times it will hardly let me stay on the desktop. I called apple support and they had me start the computer in safe mode; even then it occasionally kicks me out.
The tech guy said that it was a "strange software issue" and not a hardware issue. I thought it was a hard drive issue; my hard drive makes an odd sound when it unlocks (a grinding sound), but it has been doing that for quite some time with no issues. I tried to reset the SMC and it didn't do anything.
How should I remedy this problem? Is this a hard drive issue? Hard drive failure? Has the grinding sound finally caught up with me? I am running OS X; not leopard or snow leopard. I know I need to upgrade, but this shouldn't be happening.

Every hour or so, my computer freezes up and then restarts itself. Once restarted, it does an error report and tells me that "Sleep Wake" has experienced a problem. Is this a hardware problem? What I should do about it?

I made the mistake of upgrading (funny word for what I got) to Lion, and ever since, I've had numerous issues with my trusty MacBookPro (2008, 2.4 ghz, 17"). The latest problem has been severly annoying though, and I just would like to see if any of you have some tips I could try out. Basically, every single time I close down the lid to put my computer to sleep, or even after it goes to sleep on it's own, when I go to wake my computer, it no longer is connected to my wi-fi network, and for a period of 2-5 minutes, is acts like it is searching for networks. When this exercise is over, I can use the pull down menu brought up by clicking on the wifi icon to select my network and the computer re-connects. I saw that Apple released an update for 2011 MacBookPro's that had this same issue, and this made the problem even more irritating to me since they failed to address those of us who have older computers that have the same issue. I have tried erasing all known network in the network preferences window using the plus and minus buttons, and then re-adding my network. That didn't work.

I am running Mac Mini as a home server (turns out to be not a great idea, btw), and even though I set the preference to never sleep or shut down, it does go to sleep when there is no activity for long time. Since I am using it as home server, it should stay awake all the time or at least wake up from sleep when there is incoming ping from other computer, but it just goes to sleep.

I have a Macbook pro (OS 10.8.6), when I put it to sleep by closing the lid or explicitly choosing sleep option,it goes to sleep, but when I open the lid, the machine shutsdown. I have to press the power button for around 30 seconds to start the machine. In the logs I could find--Shutdown due to error code --79 and sleep failure shutdown.

My MBP (2012 or 2013 not sure which!) is having an issue. When I try to login, my password is accepted and then a progress bar appears. After a quarter load, my mac turns off. Unfortunately safe mode (holding shift) does not work. I have tried smc and pvram resets and repairing through disk utility. None of this has worked... Â
I'm running yosemite. The last thing I did before logging off is installing divx web player.

Is it strange that my MacBook now just shuts down when it runs out of battery instead of just going into sleep mode? It's about two weeks old now. It used to go into sleep mode, but now it just shuts down once the battery is down. Also, I had the most wonderful experience with Apple. My first macbook (three weeks ago) had a small chip on the screen. When I finally noticed it, I thought it was a large piece of dust so it wasn't too terrible. I tried to exchange it at the local store where I purchased it, but it had already been four days and I had cut out the UPC for the printer and ipod rebate the day before and sent it out. So they recommended that I go see a mac genius and see if I can get the screen replaced because I could no longer exchange it or return it (risk losing my rebates).
So, a bit upset that I was too prompt about getting the rebates in, I scheduled an appointment with a genius. When I spoke to him, he just went to the back and got the manager. The manager said instead fixing the screen, he'd liked to give me a new macbook and instant reimbursement for the ipod and printer! (the rebates I sent in will be rejected since the mac has been returned). The new macbook I noticed has a much louder superdrive seems to be working hard every time the computer wakes up and when I open it, but that definitely beats a chip on the screen. But now it doesn't go to sleep after the battery gets low, but instead shuts off.

I have an ibook G4 14" 1.42ghz.I have it plugged into a power adapter almost always. It has been plugged in in both instances/I recently put it to sleep and when I return anywhere from 15 minutes to a couple hours it is shut down. I have a heck of a time getting it to power on. It took me several times, anywhere from 3-6 times to get it to turn on.
When I turn it on it goes through the usual loading procedures and after loading a window pops up saying the date and time are wrong and could cause applications to act erratically. The date ends up being 1969 and sometimes the time is wrong.
I have fixed the date and it still happens.
I don't know if this has affected or led to this but my battery has been shot for a couple months now and occasionally (probably 1-2 times a day) the power adapter (a cheap copy of apple's) would become unplugged from the laptop prompting the message stating you are on reserve battery and that the computer will go to sleep soon.
Does anyone know what is causing this? How much would it cost to fix it?

My best guess is the problem is not specifically hard-drive related since all the 'normal' fixes just won't work. The only way i've managed to keep the Macbook Pro on for longer than a minute is through target drive, where it seems to work just fine - i can access everything. To sum up everything:Â
1 - I tried resetting the PRAM
2 - I tried to go in to safe mode, it shut off before i could type the password
3 - I tried fsck -fy command from single user mode, sometimes i can get to actually typing it but mostly it shuts off before
4 - I tried to repair disk via target drive - success, no problems detected
5 - I reinstalled OS Mavericks.Â
The Macbook Pro previously had some problems with the power-button not working properly (a mac-cunning friend of mine had to open up the mac and start it by swiping to metal pins on a specific (battery/power?) part inside it.

I'm facing an issue with my MacBook Pro Mid 2010. It hangs on startup and only shows a white screen with the Apple logo and an activity indicator.Â
I already tried:
- Replacing the HDD with a new SSD with Mavericks installed (if I put this SSD into another MacBook everything works fine)
- when trying to boot in Safe Mode it reaches about 25% in the progress bar and then shuts down
- same when I boot in Single User Mode
- when I boot in verbose mode I'm getting this outputÂ
jnl: disk0s2: open: journal checksum is bad (0xbff2db8 != 0xbff35a0)
jnl: disk0s2: replay_journal: from: 10668032 to: 12240896 (joffset 0x747000)
jnl: disk0s2: replay_journal: bogus block number 0x907a985480c1ad24
jnl: disk0s2: no known good txn start offset! aborting journal replay.
[Code] .....
Then the MacBook shuts down.

my power cord comes unplugged. my battery is 100% charged, and yet whenever the magsafe comes unplugged the whole thing shuts down. I notice the sleep light blinks rapidly a few times then when my cord goes back in things restore? Edit: My macbookpro is a Unibody which is less then 6 months old. I received it as a replacement unit from apple (due to a lemon macbookpro i originally had) Which i figured means that the battery cant be bad, i take extremely good care of my computer.

I have my mbp just 3 weeks old and I tried to calibrate the battery just few hrs ago. I continuously used my mbp until the battery level reached to 2% (the warning message showed when it was 6%). Just then I had to receive a phone call. When I was busy talking, I noticed that the mbp has gone to sleep mode but when I returned (2-3 mins later), I found it shut down. Well, I think it should have remained to sleep mode but it didn't.
Then after an hour I connected the power cord and switched on and noticed a progress bar which I saw for the first time. I have been charging it for 40-50 mins, now. Also the health of my battery keeps fluctuating between 95-100 %. istat shows this. Is this normal? So what I want to know is, Is this normal for mbp to shut down when the battery reach that low? OR there is some problem in my MBP?

Second time since yesterday-My MacBook (White-2007) has been stuck in the sleep mode and the only way for me to get out of it was to force shutdown. (Pressed the power button for ~5 seconds.)
The white sleep light had stalled and was not blinking-Is this an indication of software problems, or that my harddrive is about to fail?

My parents just bought a new Imac (3.4 Ghz/I7) which is running 10.6.8. and we cannot figure out why it won't go to sleep automatically. In System Preferences/Engergy Saver we have set both the "computer sleep" and "display sleep" to about 5 minutes, but no matter what we do it keeps showig the screen saver and never goes to sleep. The "put hd to sleep" is checked, and the start screen saver is set to roughly the same amount... I have tried adjusting these settings, to no avail.
