im having strange display issues with my powermac g5 its constantly flashing an refreshing the display every now and then after it wakes from sleep. similar to the way it would refresh if you change the screen res.
the display's started cutting off unexpectedly. It started a few months ago with random restarts, which I thought were caused by a bad hard drive, but it turns out permissions errors, stacked up over the years, really can bork your computer. I replaced the hard drive (didn't mind opening her up, since she's well out of warranty), but the problem kept occuring - only with the screen going dark randomly. I thought the new hard drive was dying, too. But here's how it's been going down lately. About twice a day, the screen will go black. Not just the backlight; it's as though the display has been turned off. I can't wake it from the display sleep, but it's not for lack of hitting the space bar repeatedly. Keyboard backlight stays on for a second, and then goes dark, at which point, I'll force a shutdown and try to restart. All of which is messing with my data; I've been doing a permissions repair pretty much daily now, and there's loads of 'em to repair. I noticed today, when it happened earlier, that my hard drive is still spinning, and USB peripherals retain their power. So what is causing my display to cut out like this, and how do I keep it from happening again (at least this frequently) until I can afford a new MacBook?
This morning my girlfriend booted up the MP and it froze when she tried to log on. A short time after freezing she was able to bring up the Dashboard but then the computer display went wild flashing like a strobe light. Ever heard of this?
I have an EMac G4 that has a number of problems, It is a 1.25gz. Sometimes it will boot to a blue, blank screen, on holding down the alt key I see the boot drive and I can start up (10.4os) but will go to the blue screen again. When it does start up properly, which it does for no apparent reason, there are little dash shaped spots on the screen and a flashing horizontal flicker. I ran fsck and disk utility and installed a fresh version of 10.4 to no avail. I do not have the original disks so cannot run hardware test. The computer falls under the Apple emac screen repair but they will not accept it because it is out of the three year time limit, very frustrating and unfair.
I have a 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 24 inch iMac in may-june 2008. I bought it because I wanted to avoid the 20 inch display problems. Somehow I feel I ended up with the wrong side of the deal. Check the snapshot please: The picture was taken using my iPhone so it's not exacty Cannon quality, but still, it describes my problem in 1000 words
What would you do in my place. Would you risk getting another one, maybe a crappier one? It is ludicrous that you take part in a russian lottery when buying a fairly expensive product like a Mac.
Some friends of mine recently called me to see if I could fix their eMac that's constantly freezing up and being slow, and I told them I'd give it a shot. Before I go over there this afternoon to fix it, I just wanted to get some ideas on what could be causing this. Is it just that eMacs are too old?
My PowerMac's (G5 Dual 1.8GHz procs) fans seem to run at a solid 4k rpm's regardless of what I'm doing, even with CPU usage set to low. I've taken the whole machine apart, cleaning it with canned air and such, but the problem just won't leave me be. The air coming out of the machine is ice cold, and the temperature readings I'm getting are about 86 degrees F for the CPU's and 70 for the HDD, so I'm not sure what gives.. Slot and Backside fans are running at 255 rpm, but the others are all 4k.
I bought it refurbished almost two years ago. For several months it has been occasionally showing the flashing question mark on start up. Usually I will restart it in safeboot and then restart and it's fine. This has gone on for a while. I wasn't sure what that was about and have not been successful in finding information about if that was common and what to do about it. (I have two babies so not a lot of time to spend searching for answers when things aren't dire) It usually seemed that if a disc was left in the notebook and/or the top shut without being properly shutdown before hand, this would happen.
Well just a bit ago it was froze on a spinning wheel and I force quit the program it was stuck on and not long after shut it down. Now it won't get past the flashing question mark. I thought it was a startup issue. Now I'm worried it might be a hard-drive issue. My second child's birth video is on there! I know, I should have backed up. I tried Shift on start up and that didn't work. I tried Command+V on start up and that did nothing. I don't have another Mac to hook it up to, just my old trusty PC
My main concern is the files like photos, music, and videos on the hard drive. My husband is not working at the moment so we can't spend a lot of money on it and the nearest Mac Genius bar is over an hour away. Looking for some good advice!
Well, a friend of mine spilled wine on my ibook g4. Other than trying to decide how much if not all of it to ask her to pay(my wine, but on an armrest and I was in the other room), I was wondering if anyone can fix suggestions. We got the battery out and it unplugged right away, but when I turn it on the screen violently flashes on and off. It does seem to run fine other than that, though.
My beloved iBook 1.33 wont boot, has flashing? and freezes when I try to boot from original CD with a bunch of vertical lines. I ran the diagnostic DVD and it says Invalid memory access. I removed the external ram chip for computer and still get same error. I also zapped PRAM, reset NMVU (whatever it's called). I already have the iBooks case open and willing to try anything.
What is wrong with this picture? The fans are running out of control constantly. This machine is sooo loud. The power supply was just replaced, which did little/nothing. Reset all ram/etc.
Power Book 15 inch G4 Flashing Question Mark. I looked in my book that came with it. Tried- -holding option key while pressing power button, the hardrive icon does not come up so I can click on it. - it also told me to take power cord out, take battery out and then hold power button for 5 seconds...
Now, this morning my computer worked, but was acting weird. I put the OS Disc it came with to start from it to run disk repair/ check..
then the question mark came, so not only do I have that, my disc is now stuck in it.
ANy suggestions? Bare with me, my boyfriend was in a motorcycle accident Saturday, had his foot amputated and is in serious condition. What a week...
My iBook G4 will not boot even from DVD.Boot with option does not show the hard drive, but shows the Tiger dvd.Memory access error shows at open boot. How can I get this thing to boot?
about a week ago my hard drive died. i took it in to be diagnosed... I purchased a new 250GB hard drive and decided to install on my own. I followed the detailed instructions on [URL], it was a breeze... but, now the problem is installing OS X onto my laptop. I can't find the original start up disk for the iBook G4, so I tried using Mac OS X Tiger, V10.4. The installation DVD loads up fine, but when it arrives at the "Select a Destination" step no Icons appear on the screen... my new hard drive seems to be hidden.
My fans are constantly going on my g4 powerbook and the noise drives me nuts. I do all sorts of work - graphics (CS2), music recording, multimedia... but even when I am just not doing anything intensive the fans are on.
The fans are at full speed now and the temp reads 37C / 98F. I've used an icurve since I got the machine.I've put up with this noisy sound for a couple years now. One person said I need to clean the air vents, like dust is causing the noise. Does anyone know about this?
its a g4 titanium powerbook 867 mhz 768 RAM (ancient I know but it still works!)
I put it on Craig's list so wanted to wipe the drive and figure I'd play around with OS 9 a little just for fun. While in OS 9 it prompted me to upgrade the firmware on the DVD-ROM drive. I thought that sounded like a good idea since it makes some terrible noises when a disc is in... anyway, I did the firmware upgrade and everything went fine. That's the only real change I can think of that might have contributed to this new issue.Anyway, after that I put 10.3 on it again (I had 10.4 on it before) and it wouldn't sleep correctly. Everything looks like its going to sleep ok, then the hard drive spins up, then back down, over and over again endlessly.
My brother has a second gen, 800Mhz eMac (the one that could be overclocked to 1.33Ghz - the earlier PC133 ram model). Since about 1.5 mths ago, when he powers it on, sometimes it will not power on, and other times it will give three beeps (diagnostic pages say bad RAM) and a flashing power/sleep light in unison with the beeps. Did this vintage suffer bad caps? I recall that it was only the 1.25Ghz model that had bad caps, but I could be wrong.
I purchased a 1.33 G4 14 inch ibook exactly 13 months and eight days ago. The logic board is toast as of today. i.e. flashing colors and flickering screen. I took it back to where I purchased it and many other apple items {powermacpac it Portland Oregon}...and I was told that it was a $600 dollar repair...unbeleivable...I now have a $1050 dollar paperweight. I called apple support to find out if they would fix the computer since we were so close to the warranty end date. n the end...I shoulda bought applecare.
So my 17in, 1.67 GHz PowerBook has fallen prey to the Flashing Question Mark.
Here are a few things I've tried and their outcomes:
-Held option during startup to select startup disk: no startup disks appeared. -Held shift during startup to safe boot: flashing question mark -Reset PRAM: flashing question mark -Reset PMU: flashing question mark -Tried to boot from original startup disk: dim grey screen, "you need to restart your computer", a bunch of text and something about "kernal version" -Tried to boot from Leopard disk: dim grey screen, "you need to restart your computer"
I have an iBook G3 Clamshell 466MHz with 192mb RAM and 10GB HD. I recently updated the OS from 9.2.2 to Panther on a single partition. The upgrade went flawlessly. Then I purchased a 512mb RAM module from a 3rd Party Vendor and after fitting it discovered the iBook no longer boots past the flashing folder/?.
I removed the new ram and replaced the 128mb module but haven't been able to boot past this flashing folder/? icon. I've zapped the PRAM, reset Open Firmware, disconnected the Keyboard then booted, reset the PMU (need to do this each boot or I see black screen only) and tried to boot from the Panther Disc #1 holding the 'C' key. I also tried TDM with my Intel Mac Core 2 Duo but couldn't boot past the flashing folder/? icon.
As the title says, I need a new monitor for my old G5 as the old monitor for it went bust. Apple does not make the old displays that came with the unit anymore and the only available monitor is the new LED ones ? but they all come with mini display ports
I have recently come across an extremely cheap ibook (free) which i was able to keep if I got it too work. Well I've been successfully fairly by using it for a few weeks, then it just died. Not sure how it did but it did. The problems seem to be with the flashing (Finder/?) folder on a gray screen back ground. I've already run through the [URL] tutorials of what's wrong and have successfully done a PRAM and a PMU reset with no result. One of the times that I restarted the iBook and after the flashing folder got two new separate folders. One with an arrow turning clockwise on the left, and another folder with an arrow pointing right on the right. Both in blue folders as the flashing folders. Now I believe the problem is that the iBook is unable to find and utilize the Startup Disk. Forums I have read state to put in the reinstall disc, which I don't see how that will work on account of the CD tray not responding to anything I've yet put in there. Not trying with disc until i know that is the only possible solution. Don't want to loose my disc. Maybe some of you have come across this situation and know of a sure fire way to fix it. If not, Ill have to just send it in to some site.
For the past few months i have been using an external display hooked up to my 12" powerbook g4. I have had it on a dual display mode so no mirroring. Recently i would open the laptop lid waking it from being in sleep mode and my internal display will not turn on. The apply system profiler does not even recognize that the internal display exists. My external display works fine and has always been set as the main display. If i go to detect displays nothign happens. I have tried restarting the computer, instering system disks, unplugging the external and nothing has worked. I simply cannot get my internal screen to fire back up. When i used to unplug my external display the internal display would switch back to being the main display and everything would be fine. Now i cannot get the internal display to function whatsoever. Please try and help me as a need this laptop working and i will be ordering a mac pro soon for use with my external display.
I am looking for a display to use with my Powerbook G4 12". I am in love with the 30" cinema display, but according to technical support today, my setup is not compatible (supposedly, but the person on the phone didn't sound to sure). I have a mini DVI, but the 30" requires a dual DVI. I think the 23" display requires DVI, which I can attain with an adapter. Does anyone have suggestions for what I can use with my computer? The bigger the better for me. Also what do you think of the older (plastic case) apple displays?
I turned on my G5 for the 1st time and the only thing that shows on the monitor is a small folder in the center of the screen with a question mark "?" in the middle alternating back and forth with the Mac icon every couple seconds. There is no indication the keyboard or mouse are able to function although both are hooked up properly.
My 13" MacBook Air Mid-2011 Version currently running Mac OS X 10.7.3. Is constantly overheating and the fan is constantly loud. The fan is around 5500rpm even when I am not doing anything on it or even when it is off.
I want to extend the desktop of a Mac Pro. Can I use the Powerbook as a second display? I searched and the answer seems to be no, but if anyone knows a way, I'd love to hear it!
I have a dead iBook G3 that I would like to use as a 2nd display for my iMac G5. What are the connections I would need to do this? Is it even possible?
