PowerPC :: Wiping Hard Drive On Older Model?

Sep 2, 2009

this is my first post as im relatively new to using macs as a whole. Ive been a PC user my whole life but am currently raising funds so that i may buy a new MBP for myself. In doing so i have obtained an older Mac laptop from a family member which im going to try and sell for whatever money i can get. Ive researched the model as much as possible and have this info:

Powerbook G4 (12 in. DVI), 1.33 GHz, 256MB memory, Mac OS X 10.3.9

I want to wipe the Hard drive before i sell it however ive only found information on how to do so with an install disc which i do not have. Because it is relatively old, my family member doesnt know where it is either so using that disc is not really an option at this point. I wanted to find out what my next best option is or if i can use an install disc from any other mac laptop that might be more easily obtainable.

OS X :: Wiping Out Hard Drive

Oct 30, 2009

I'm thinking of selling my 20" IMAc and buying the new 27". Before I sell the old one I will need to wipe off all my personal documents, pictures, etc. Is it just a simple matter of deleting pictures from I-photo for example or does more need to be done. Are there software programs available that will accomplish what I need prior to selling the unit to someone else?

Windows On Mac :: Restore 7 From Clone After Wiping Hard Drive (without 7 Disc)?

Oct 2, 2010

I recently had to wipe my entire hard drive. I made a clone of my Windows 7 partition before doing so, but am now unsure about how to restore it. Is it possible to restore without first installing Win 7 from scratch, i.e., is there any chance I could partition the drive using the Boot Camp utility then simply copy the entire file system over?

OS X :: Disk Utility Stuck Whilst Wiping Hard Drive?

Apr 4, 2010

I'm getting ready to sell my old Powerbook G4 so booted up from the installation CD, and ran Disk Utility to do a 8 Way Random Write pass on the Mac hard drive before I did a clean install (the disc is Mac OS X 10.3.7).

I selected the top option in the drive panel of Disk Utility (the one saying 92.2GB Hitatchi blablabla) rather than the indented disk beneath it.

All went fine doing the overwrite, however it seems to have become stuck on "Creating Partition Map" - it's been like that for half a day now. Any thoughts? Should I have chosen the indented drive underneath the main description?

MacBook Pro :: What Does Rtl Stand For In Wd Hard Drive Model Name

Aug 5, 2009

I am looking at the western digital 500 blue hard drive like on newegg, and i notice that there was two model names for the same drive. however i did not know what they represent exactly. my guess was that the wd5000bevtrtl meant retail and the the wd5000bevt was for system builders or bulk buyers. so is it that the only difference is that one comes in the package and the other does not. right. cause i saw one at besy buy and one is more expensive. now does this mean that the retail one is less likely to fail or do i run the same risk. i know this is a stupid question that may seem a little stupid but i just want to make sure.

MacBook Pro :: 1199 Model With A 250GB Hard Drive

Dec 13, 2010

I just recently picked up a MacBook Pro, the $1199 model with a 250GB hard drive from Best Buy (Only reason - 24 months no interest with their store credit card). I would like to upgrade the hard drive, but need to know exactly what size screwdrivers to use. I was able to take out the 10 screws and unplug the SATA connector from the hard drive, but there are star screws that are on the actual hard drive I need to remove and put on the new one...Since I didn't have a star screwdriver, I had to put it back together. ONE screw will not go in all the way on the side, and its annoying me. Because of this, I'm scared to take it apart again without the proper tools and stripping a screw or hole. if

I haven't priced out the SSD drives or anything, so I'm not even sure if it's cost effective to upgrade.

Mac Pro :: Installing HIS Radeon Hard Drive 4870 512MB DDR5 In 2006 Model?

Jul 29, 2009

I bought HIS Radeon HD4870 512MB DDR5 for my Mac Pro 2006 1.1. The first problem I've found it that card will not fit to slot 1, because of too long screws. So I installed it in slot 2, leaving 7300GT in slot 1. The next problem was how to get rid of these power cables - I've tried the more elegant way taking that molex adapter under HDD trays, but cables where too short So I installed them on the right of Superdrive's tray. Now on Mac OS X I got kernel panic (probably the injector thing). On Windows Vista card is detected, but automatically disabled (probably not enough power or just PCI-EX 1x slot is not compatible). Here are photos from the operation. I'll try to install Accelero S1 rev. 2 with Noctua 120 mm fan and will see how things go I've also ordered two special Apple PCI-EX power connectors from Austria.

PowerPC :: Hard Drive Not Working / Logic Board Unable To Communicate With Hard Drive

Sep 9, 2009

My PowerBook G4 (Alum) died. I've had it for 4 years, taken it with me to Alaska and all over the lower 48, and have had nothing but happy experiences. I knew she was gonna go, but I was hoping she'd hold on until I could afford a MacBook. Alas, no. The problem appears to be the ability of the logic board to communicate with the hard drive. I can hear the HD spin, but even with Disk Warrior, I cannot locate it. The Mac Geniuses at my local Apple store confirmed this and gave me a shoulder to cry on. I've run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, and tried finding it using the target disk mode - no luck.

The problem is that I've got 4 years of teaching materials, 6000 songs, and irreplaceable pictures on the HD, so I can't bring myself to just trash it. It's true that you only fail to back up you stuff once. This is my once. I've heard that with PC hard drives, you can just drop the old HD into a USB HD box and use it as an external HD. I can't afford professional data retrevial, and I want to give this option a try if it'll work with a Mac HD. Any ideas or suggestions?

OS X :: Create A New Bootable Drive Without Wiping Out The Data In The Original Drive?

Jan 7, 2010

I have an '05 mac mini (pre-intel chip) with OS X 10.4 that while trying to transfer a file to an external hard drive gave me a blue screen (that wouldn't go away). After a hard shut down, I get to the apple and spinning wheel but nothing else happens.

My goal is to get to my files on the mini and put them on an external drive (specifically my itunes folder)

Is there some other way to repair this? I have 17 GB left on the main hard drive. Could I partition it and create a new bootable drive without wiping out the data in the original drive?

PowerPC :: Hard Drive Spins And Super Drive Make Noise - No Boot Up

Jan 7, 2010

My friend gave me his old Apple cube G4 + 15" Cinema display in like 1000 pieces. Its completely teared apart. I tried a lot, but it doesn't work. The original IDE cable wasn't included, so I bought one for 2 cents. It should work or not? Maybe the powersupply. I'm not sure. I don't believe actually that the hardware itself, like the motherboard is broken. When everything is into place and I connect the cube to the powersupply it boots immediately. I don't have to do anything. Harddrive spins and the superdrive makes some noise as well. This repeats itself every 5 seconds. The screen is connected and gets power through DVI, but no display. Both the cube and display have touch enabled buttons to switch it on, but they do not respond (I guess).. Motherboard gives 2 light. DS1 is green, DS2 is red.
