PowerPC :: Upgrading IBook Wireless To 802.11n?
Feb 3, 2008is it possible to upgrade my MBP (CD) and iBook to 802.11n?? surely it would be possible to simply pull out the old wireless cards and purchase a new n card?

Oct 11, 2008i am upgrading my ibook g4 1.2 GHz powerPC from the original hardrive -30gb - with a new western digital Scorpio 250 gb drive. all my research says this will be compatible.
once the drive is installed ( i am confident I can do this correctly ) it is my understanding that I put my leopard disk in, and go to disk utility to format the drive. Then I load my files onto the ibook from a backup I created last night using time machine. My understanding is that my files and programs will be placed back onto my computer where they were before. is this correct? am i going to have to re activate my adobe CS3? quicktime pro? etc.?
PowerPC :: Upgrading IBook G4 Running On Tiger To Leopard?
Dec 23, 2010A friend of mine gave me her old iBook G4 so I can fix it. Something was wrong with it (half the applications are missing, spotlight reindexes every time it restarts etc). So I'm just gonna reinstall everything from the ground up. My question is though, should I install Tiger again or would Leopard be better? The only thing I am afraid of is that Leopard would slow down the iBook since it's an older Laptop. Here are the specs:

Jul 14, 2008my friend is maybe going to buy an ibook g4 and it seems like the guy whos selling it doesnt have a airport card inside, Since it says add a card, so since he doesnt wanna spend much more for an airport card i told him about usb wireless. So my question is does he have to get a certian usb wireless device or can he just go down to the store and get any ordinary one for pc's?

PowerPC :: IBook G4 Cannot Detect Wireless
Dec 17, 2006I used to have an old iBook G4 whose hard drive conked out on me a few months ago. I sent it to Apple and go a new hard drive installed. This model of the iBook does not have the wireless built in but I got a free Airport card during the purchase and its put in. Now, I've installed Panther on it but a problem I've noticed is that I simply can't detect any wireless networks. I can turn on and off the wireless in my menu bar but whenever I search for networks, it detects nothing. This is all the time of course, next to my iMac and Powerbook which have no problems detecting the network. I've tried re-installing the OS even.

On speedtest.net to Montreal I get around 4-5mbps download usually. On another laptop, I get 15-18mbps. laptops are side-by-side. It also randomly will stop working (ie in Firefox it'll take a minute to open a page (that's just doing the hostname lookup.. I use free DNS servers, my ISP's were slow.)
Any reason why the airport extreme card is extremely slow? Also, when I do a direct ethernet connect, it's also slow... ?
I did get 11 mbps a long time ago, I never seemed to get that again. I am using 10.4.11, 1.2ghz, 768mb ram. I do the speedtest when basically nothing is running (Adium/Skype is all pretty much).

May 10, 2007So I have a network running a Linksys B&G WRT54G router on a ComCast Cable internet connection. I have an iBook G4 (2005) and a B/W G3/400 connected to it. The iBook is using the built-in Airport Extreme and the G3 is using a valid Belkin PCI card (model: FD57000) 802.11G card. So the G3 is just chillin' downloading torrents and what not, but I noticed the speeds aren't that great and my iBook is slowed waaay down on just basic web browsing. I reboot the G3 and all of a sudden the iBook speeds way up. Once the G3 is back online everything is slow again. I've tried many settings and still am not satisfied yet (using the iBook on the same torrents as the G3 the speeds are insanely higher).

Jan 25, 2010I have been a mac user since 2006. Yesterday, I purchased an iBook G4 for my father, who I have converted from Windows to Macintosh. We are 99% satisfied. Everything works great except the wireless internet. Whenever the computer shuts off or goes to sleep, we have a difficult time re-connecting to the wireless internet. After five minutes of clicking on the wireless signal (at the top of the screen) and turning it on and off, we are able to get on. Once we connect, it does not seem to disconnect.

Jun 5, 2007I connect two desktops and the subject ibook to an airport base station. The ibook is a 1.2MgH, 30GM hard drive, 256 RAM. The laptop has been in use approximately two years. The laptop has always automatically connected to the airport. Yesterday morning when I started the machine, it indicated it was not connected to a network. When I selected my network, it asked for the password. When I input the password, it told me it was invalid. Nothing I've been able to do with any utility or any other corrective action has changed the message "invalid password." And just so you know, I am entering the correct password for my network.

-802.11n only (5 Ghz)
or
-802.11 (802.11a compatible)
My iBook and Pismo boxes cannot even see the wirless network at all. It is not a closed network and when selecting Other to connect and entering my WPA password I get an error.

Feb 26, 2010I bought a G3 Clamshell Ibook today and I don't know how to connect to the net with it. So I did some reseach (btw I know nothing about Mac's nothing at all. This is my first one!!) and there is something about an Airport card. So my question is how do I check to see if my computer has it. If it does then how do I access the net.
If not, please, please tell me there is another way to get wireless on the thing cause I don't think I can install a wireless card on a computer. I would not even know where to begin.

Aug 13, 2010I have a G3 iBook and just the other day the display stopped working. There were no signs of the display going bad, it's just went. Am I able to boot the iBook via Target Disk Mode on my PowerBook and run the iBook Hardware Test CD on it? Also, can I reboot my PowerBook and choose the iBook as the startup volume?
I know how to do Target Disk Mode but the latter I'm not sure about.
PowerPC :: Hard Drive Swapping - IBook G3 And IBook G4
Oct 20, 2006My brother's iBook G4 (800Mhz, First Rev) has completely splattered itself and we're getting a new Macbook for him under insurance. My iBook G3 (White, 900Mhz G3..the last G3 Rev of the iBook) has a failing hard drive.
Now, could I swap out those two drives, at least to recover stuff? And is there a specific method of opening up the iBook G4 so that I don't break stuff (I've already messed with my G3..and ended up with a dozen extra screws ^_^
Mainly the aim is to salvage the hard drive and swap them out; replacing my faulty iBook G3 one with the iBook G4 one which is perfectly fine.

How much faster would the G4 be over my G3. I figure that after selling my G3, the G4 would only be another $200ish on top of it. Would this be worth it?

Apr 19, 2009I just bought a parts ibook from ebay, but I managed to fix it, except there was no hard drive. I currently have a 6 GB HD in it with OS X.3.9 on it, but I want tiger. I have the tiger family pack, so I have a license for it. It only has a CD-ROM drive, so I am wondering if I can buy a 40 GB HD, and clone the one from my G4 onto it.

Jul 20, 2006So, I'll spare you guys the details, haha, but I am stuck trying to decide between getting an iMac Intel or a MacBook Pro for my home use computer. What would be the advantages of one over the other? I just really love the fact that a MacBook Pro would be portable yet powerful. And yes, I have this iBook for portability to school and such, but if I want to do extensive work on the couch, I could bring a MBP vs. an iMac. What do you all think? Are too laptops redundant?
