PowerPC :: G5 And Intel HD's Swappable ?

I just got a iMac G5 (pre iSight) and I'm trying to start it up holding down option while it's connected to a duplicate version of my MacBook's HD on an external firewire HD and it's not being able to boot from it . My Macbook works fine when I do this if I feel like trying something out on the external drive 1st .
The only thing I can think that's wrong is that the G5 & Intel HD's are not swappable . This could ruin my plans of putting a drive in the iMac the same size as my Macbook and simply copying over all the contents through restore w/ target disk mode .
Is that what I'm dealing w/ ? And if so does anyone know a way around it besides having to reinstall all my old programs and files into the G5 piece by piece ?
My intel MacBook is still running Tiger and that's what's on the iMac as well.

I have a 2007 MacBook Pro, and I use the VGA adapter to connect to my TV. I always connect/disconnect while the Mac is off. My dad has a new MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt, and I'm getting him a Thunderbolt to HDMI cable. Does he need to have his Mac off while connecting to the TV, or is it hot-swappable?

Can I upgrade my G5 dual 2.0 with intel chips? I am really feeling hurt, that I bought a MAC and then Apple "upgrades" there Mac with intel chips. And what hurts eben more is the games now coming out are only for Intel Mac's only. I am not a hard core gamer... but I would still like to play a couple of the new games coming out.

I am a victim of progress. I needed my Power pc G5 to complete a photography job and sure enough 3 months later....the switch to intel....I have heard rumors of people putting intel motherboards into their g5s.

I love my PowerBook G3 Firewire (a.k.a. Pismo or 2000) but it isn't the zippiest computer ever. So as I find the pismo is more a collector's item than it is a regular laptop I have decided I'm going to try to sell it on eBay. It's got a 500MHz G3, 256MB RAM, 1MB L2 Cache, DVD drive, and an $80 hard drive I installed myself with 80GB. I hope to get about $350 for it? I have $120 in addition to what I'll get from the pismo.
eBay has dual core mac minis like new or in sealed box with 1GB RAM and everything for $450 and $475. I was first considering an iBook G4. I don't have another laptop to bring between my mom and dad's houses. The advantage of a laptop for me is keeping my data I need with me. I have a portable hard drive but the computers over at the other house aren't totally mine like the ones here. I could always upload everything to a .Mac account but then I couldn't access it from a windows computer? I guess what it comes down to is the iBook G4 being a computer with a big future ahead of it. If it will run the latest apps and stuff for the next 3-5 years without problems (I don't really do video/music editing, yet, but I am a power user) then I'd be happier with the iBook G4 and then my brand new custom built PC could do windows and osx86 when I finally get that going. If the iBook won't be then I should really just go with the mac mini instead because I'll need a good mac for the future.

I am a lifetime Mac owner, but I am really pissed at Apple for not allowing the new version of Final Cut Studio to run on a G5, only on Intel processors. I have had my Quad G5 for 3 1/2 years and I don't want to buy a new computer. So here is my question: Is there anyway to upgrade my G5 to an Intel processor? or is there anyway to get the new FC Studio to run on my G5?

I've been running on a "dual-oldies" setup -- G4 Mini for main/personal work, and G4 iBook as my mobile unit/business HD. I often Firewire them together so I can do business stuff with my main monitor and keyboard.
I finally decided that I don't mind an older/slower field unit (and I actually like the fact that if my laptop dies/gets stolen/falls off a bridge, I can just buy a "new" iBook for cheap as long as I have the data backed up elsewhere). But I really need to update the Mini to the latest model, because it just doesn't keep up with my multitasking needs anymore. Before I do, though, should I be worried about compatibility issues if I keep linking these two computers together as I've done in the past?
I know there are some issues with booting an intel from a PPC. What else should I keep in mind?

Why is it that an Imac G5 doesn't perform nearly as well as even the Core duos in terms of FPS?Why is it that the PPC artictechture seems to not be able to run games as well, even with a comparably speced graphics card?I can't really seem to formulate my question:Let's pretend we have two computers that are exactly the same speed. if it was possible to swap out the first intel processors with the newer ones the imacs are coming with. i found this info and mainly looks just as tricky as open heart surgery to risk my imac doing, and thats just replacing the processor itself.

I have a G5 PowerMac from 2004 (I can provide more details about the machine if it's necessary), that has essentially broken down and I do not currently have the money to fix it. A friend of mine has a brand new Intel Mac Pro. I want to install my G5's hard drive as a second hard drive on his Mac Pro.
My questions are:
1) Is this even possible?
2) Can I do this without losing the content of my hard disk?
3) Is there an available guide, or could someone run down the detailed steps, of doing this?

I decided I wanted to use the 1TB HD that's in my brand new Mac Pro in my late 2005 Power Mac G5. I installed the HD and started up the Power Mac. I was planning to insert the OS X disk and have to reinstall the operating system.
But it booted up fine and seems to be working perfectly. I thought I would have needed to reinstall OS X since the hardware/specs are completely different (especially the processor Intel V PowerPC). I thought it would be having some kind of Mac Pro in Power Mac body freak-out!
Is that not the case? Can I go ahead and use this sucker without any dramas? I've read iMovie 09 isn't compatible with PowerPC. Will all the other system and iLife 09 software work OK?

I have always been interested in getting a G5, ever since they came out. I might be able to nag a Quad G5 for very cheap, but I have a question. I know that an Intel Core 2 Duo is faster than a G5, but how is it faster than the Quad? What exactly makes the Intel faster than the G5? I am looking at the Apple specs of the Quad and to me, it looks like a really solid computer, especially for 2005.

I am getting an Ibook G3 from a friend and it is kinda old, I think the HD is about 20gb and i am sure it is running panther. I would at least like it to run tiger, that is what i have in my intel mac mini. Is there a way to clone the HD of my mini and maybe get a slightly bigger HD for the ibook and just use the clone from the mini in the ibook? I dont want to put much money into the ibook as far as buying the os and such because im sure it has or will get the gpu problem sooner or later. I just want to know if it is possible to do this task.

I have a BIG problem with my old powerbook. I have decided to format it.
It came with tiger, I had installed leopard with an upgrade DVD (not full version).
What I did: I inserted the leopard upgrade dvd and told the pb to initialize and install. After a while I had an error message. It already deleted everything, so when I insert the leopard dvd, it doesn't find any other OS, therefore I can't install the upgrade.
NO PROBLEM, I have the 2 tiger DVD. I insert the first one, pressing C, no. It does not start.
NO PROBLEM, I connect via firewire the powerbook to a macpro. I open the cd 1 of tiger (in the macpro) go to the installation file, and start the installation via firewire. It tells me that I have to partion the disk in Mac os extended with an option "GUI" (something like that).
I have noticed that the GUI mode is for an intel based mac, but mine is ppc...but if I select any other option the system doesn't allow me to continue with the installation of OSX]
I did it, and the installation proceeded well. After a while It asked me for CD2, I inserted it and finished the installation succesfully.
Now I started my powerbook...and is not working, again Kernel Panic...but now there is the OS installed, so...why?

I have an old Summer 2000 iMac DV SE running Tiger. Recently when I powered up the machine I saw the display flicker a bit then went dead. I also began to smell something burning from the rear ventilation ports. Now when I press the power button, it lights up for a brief moment then the burning smell returns.

Do Universal Binary applications (Adobe Illustrator CS3) run quicker on Intel than on Power PC if the machines were similary spec'd maybe due to better architecture etc. E.g. a "G5 PPC 2.0Ghz" vs "iMac C2D 2.0ghz". I'm looking for real world application use rather than benchmarks. Wondering if it is better to go second user on a G5 or splash out on a new iMac/MacPro?

I am a Graphic/Web Designer. Currently I have a dual 867mhz G4 that doesn't cut it. I can go all out and bring the machine up to dual 1.42 G4, 2gb ram, Radeon 3850, etc etc... BUT Before I lay out the money for it, would it be worth going for a second hand intel mini? The gpu in them I know is terrible but that aside does anyone have experience of the performance between the two when running; Adobe Photoshop, In-Design, Illustrator and Dreamweaver CS3 as well as Inkscape and GIMP and occasionally Google Sketchup. I'm not bothered about noise etc, only the performance difference.

My Intel MacBook is in the shop, and I swapped out my hard drive before I sent it in and put it in a USB enclosure. I was able to boot my friend's MacBook Pro from the drive, but my G4 Mac Mini is not seeing it as an option (upon startup or otherwise). I can read files from it, but I really need to boot from the drive for some other things (cookies, passwords, and especially the ability to sync my iPod touch).

We have some new Intel iMacs and have transferred some information from our previous G4 PM (one MDD and one Quicksilver) to the new iMacs. For some reason the G4's will now not boot up and kernal panic on the gray Apple boot screen. This has happened to all the G4's we have in our office. They are running OSX 10.2.8 and the iMacs are running OSX 10.4.4. We can still mount the drives from the G4's using FireWire Target Disk mode.
I have tried zapping the PRAM etc but they still wont boot. I have also tried running the OSX 10.2 Installer disks to try and reinstall OSX on the G4's but the installer cannot see the drives?
I tried running the disk utility. It finds the hard drive but wont let me verify/repair permissions (the option is grayed out). It will only let me verify/repair the disk, but it finds no errors. The installer cannot find the disk at all.
We have more than one hard drive in the G4's and the target disk mode will only mount the system drive, it doesnt see the others, so we cannot retrieve out information. Whats going on. Never had this problem before.
Anyone have any idea what is wrong. Never had this problem before using the FireWire transfer.
