PowerPC :: G4 IBook Shell Replacement
Nov 13, 2007
I have a chip on the side of my g4 ibook and would like to change the whole case to something other than the standard glossy white. I recall there was a company that made really colorful (red, blue, pink) Macs, but can't find anything online. Well, I found one company [URL] but they sell the machine not just a case. Anyway, I think they were painted, but by now I figure there has to be a company offering a way to customize Macs. does anyone know of one?

I currently have a 40gb HD on my iBook G4 and was wondering if there is a way to install a new harddrive without voiding my warranty (I have over 1.5 years left on it). Also, where is the best place to buy new HDs?

We are now trying to replace the hard drive with an 80 Gb one. The problem is that when I try to clone the existing HD over to the new one, CCC gets to the point of copying the applications folder and can't go any farther. I assume this means the HD in the iBook is well and truly dead, Worst case I'll have to install everything from the restore discs, although that will set her machine back some--I think she has OS 10.2 discs and the machine is actually on 10.3.9.

Some guy is selling a 500mhz G3 ibook for 200, the only problem is it has a broken screen. How much would it cost to replace, and is this a good price?

I'm looking into replacing a motherboard on my newphews iBook G4. It's an early 2004 Series. I'm wondering if these Ibooks have interchangable motherboards, i.e. 1.0ghz vs 1.2ghz, 12inch screen vs the 14inch screen. I've done much work on IBM compatible laptops and these interchange pretty easily...but these MAC's are all new to me. I'm looking to get a busted up one off ebay and replace it for him for pretty cheap...

My iBook is almost 3 years old and I think the battery is just dead. It holds a charge of maybe 20 minutes max and it's gotten to the point where I'm just gonna give in a buy a new batterry. Can I just buy any "14" iBook G4" batterry off of eBay or any site other than from Apple direct(retails $129)? Should I be looking a particular model number for the battery (A1080) or the laptop? I see batterries selling for $80 on eBay....
have u guys done this? I dont want to end up with something that won't work just because I bought it at a non-Apple site...

I'm trying to fix my dc in board myself. I figured out that was the problem and took it to the genius bar to confirm. I ordered the part and have directions from ifixit.com. Can I do this? I have absolutely no experience with this sort of thing, but I do follow directions well. A friend told me that some mac consultants won't even attempt this repair, which made me very uncomfortable. Can anybody who's done this repair speak to the difficulty and what it would be like for a person who's never even seen the inside of a computer? I don't have the money right now to have somebody else do it, so should I just put it up until I do, or take a shot at it? I really love this little laptop and hoped that I could save it...

I purchased what I thought was an identical replacement screen used for my ibook G4 1.2 ghz. When attempting to install myself, I started to hook the new screen in and noticed I have what I believe is to be 2 power connectors (the connectors with the round pencil lead size connector) where the old screen only had 1. The data connectors were identical.
Do I have the wrong screen, do I use only 1.

I have an old iBook G4 14" (from about 2004 or 2005) that was just replaced by a MacBook. The hinge on the screen is pretty much broken and the screen looks pretty terrible. I'm thinking about installing a distro of Linux on it and using it as a file server or media server and connecting it to an external display, but I would like to have the keyboard and mouse readily available and would not like to have issues with overheating because the lid is closed. Is there a way I can completely remove the screen (including the hinge) and have it still be functional?

I'm internal-HD-shopping for a friend, and want to make sure I know: What terminology will identify drives I can put in this iBook? I know it's 2.5"--what else should I make sure of? Also--any kinds that would be better than others? It's a 14" G3 with Firewire and DVD-ROM. "New" as G3s go.

My old 1.33 12" iBook needs a new drive. I need some advice regarding the power switch cord. This says the power cord is soldered to the board: [URL] I can leave the top case connected by the power switch cord if required. Perhaps I could tape the case down during work on the back side and rotate the connected case left during work on the front side. This is slightly beyond my skill level. Great advice found here during searches. I plan to be very slow, methodical, and conscious of screws/step.

after 4 years my ibook g4 14" has a problem. my hard drive needs to be replaced. i took it to the genius bar yesterday and they gave me a referal to a store in my area that is certified to work on macs... but they don't sell hard drives in-house since they just started up a few weeks ago. does anyone have a suggestion for a decent replacement internal hard drive? i'm not looking for anything high-end. i just need a cheap, reliable drive to get me through about another year when i can get a new mac. if this matters much... i do use my ibook for a small amount of video editing, graphic design, etc... but only when work has to come home w/ me.
*the guys at the repair place did suggest a few... but they were all in the $250-$350 range... i was hoping to keep it around $150 or lower since i've been doing fine w/ my 40gb for 4 years now and i have 2 externals that total 1.75 tb. they said i could find some for that price elsewhere... but they only ordered from one place when they needed to... and none were available (in my $ range) there*

once I get my hard drive replaced, how do I go about installing OSX on the new HD? I mean, the HD won't have an OS at all, so do I just insert my install disks, boot off them, and then install OSX on the new HD? Or will the computer boot up all? I will transfer everything over from my USD backup drive- yes, I know that will take more than a little while... (coincidentally, the Seagate Barracuda is LOUD). I'm only asking because the place where I want to get the replacement itself done charges like 30 bucks to do it, but ONLY for the physical replacement and no data transfer. Hopefully the software side I'll be able to handle...

My nephew was kind enough to give me an out-of-warranty iBook G4 12" as a gift - he has long been a Mac fan and wants me to experience the love first hand. Of course, no good deed goes unpunished, and as he was powering it up to give me the fifty cent tour, the LCD died - just died. Backlight was fine, but all we saw for images was squiggly gry and black lines in the center of the panel.
"It's probably the cable." the guys at both the Apple Store Genius Bar *and* I-fixit told us, but of course, neither place sells the LCD cable as a replacement part, and as you undoubtedly know, iFixit's price for a replacement LCD is upward of $400, and Apple won't even sell you one - although they WILL replace it for you, for about $650 out of warranty. I had resigned myself to letting it sit until I could save up the money to score a display on eBay, where they go for anywhere from $75 to $220 - much more reasonable, but still pricey when you consider that the rest of the machine could give up the ghost at any time....................

I have a G3 iBook and just the other day the display stopped working. There were no signs of the display going bad, it's just went. Am I able to boot the iBook via Target Disk Mode on my PowerBook and run the iBook Hardware Test CD on it? Also, can I reboot my PowerBook and choose the iBook as the startup volume?
I know how to do Target Disk Mode but the latter I'm not sure about.

My brother's iBook G4 (800Mhz, First Rev) has completely splattered itself and we're getting a new Macbook for him under insurance. My iBook G3 (White, 900Mhz G3..the last G3 Rev of the iBook) has a failing hard drive.
Now, could I swap out those two drives, at least to recover stuff? And is there a specific method of opening up the iBook G4 so that I don't break stuff (I've already messed with my G3..and ended up with a dozen extra screws ^_^
Mainly the aim is to salvage the hard drive and swap them out; replacing my faulty iBook G3 one with the iBook G4 one which is perfectly fine.

Right now I have a G3 iBook (900 MHz, 640 MB RAM, Combodrive, 40 GB HDD). I'm looking at a G4 iBook (1.2 GHz, 768 MB RAM, Superdrive, 60 GB HDD).
How much faster would the G4 be over my G3. I figure that after selling my G3, the G4 would only be another $200ish on top of it. Would this be worth it?

I have a great G4 MMD machine that I love. I've rebuilt it, and it does everything I want it to do with OSX.
The problem is the noise from the two fans. Its REALLY loud.
Is there a drop in replacement for the big fan that will be less loud, BUT will still move the same amount of air. The last thing I want to do is overheat the machine because I put in a substandard fan.

My PowerBook G4 (specs in the bottom, except 250 GB drive) HDD is failing. It is the standard 80 GB one that came with the notebook. I have a 250 GB WD scorpio ready to go in, but I have a couple of questions. First of all, if I use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my existing disc to the new WD scorpio by using a PATA drive enclosure (USB 2.0), will it boot once put in the notebook? Does it need to be a firewire enclosure to be able to boot? Second, what is the average life of the original Hitachi drives (80 GB) that were put in this model of PowerBook. This is the 1.33 GHz model with the superdrive 4x. I just want to know what to do before I disassemble it.

Its been going for a while now and finally the right channel of audio has fully cut out from the headphone jack. This is a huge bummer. I mean the laptops 3 years old so its not to bad. I mean its taken a beating over the years. Its just that I use it to listen to music and audio out for watching dvds, so its no good for that anymore. I have an external audio card but thats no good for when I am mobile and I use the laptop all over the place. Is there a way to fix this or would it need a whole logic board replacement? Can I use a audio card that fits into those card slots on the left hand side of the Powerbook. What are those cards called again?

I got an old G4 Digital Audio as home server / seedbox, and recently i got fed up with the horrible noise and as a first step i replaced the 120 mm fan with a new and quiet one, and it is working perfectly. However, when i replaced it i noticed that the CPU fan is now the loudest, and a computer that is on 24/7 can never be too quiet.
Can i replace the CPU fan with any fan of the right size?
Are there any requirements regarding fan speed/air throughput?
Do i have to connect the fan to the non-standard two pin connection where the original fan was connected or can i just use a normal 3 to 4 converter and connect it to the spare 4 pin power outlet?

I just inherited a Powerbook G4 17" as my work computer. Model number is A1085. It's the 1.5 ghz I believe. Anyway, it has one problem ? the delete key is broken off. Not only that, but the little rubber spring under the key is also gone. Is it possible for me to replace the key, and the rubber nub, without having to buy an entire new keyboard? Any suggestions on where to get a new keyboard if that is not possible? Best price I can find is $85. I'd hate to have to spend that much (or have work spend that much), for a single key.
I work at a newspaper, and I write stories. No delete key is a big problem.

My 17 inch iMac G5 1.8ghz seems to have died. For a while it's been refusing to power up and then powering up randomly but now it wont power up at all. I've looked on the logic board and reset the SMU etc but I can only get the first LED to light up. I think this means the logic board has died. Is it worth replacing the logic board and can it be done easily myself? Or should I just bite the bullet and pay out for a new alu intel iMac? I'm in the UK btw, any ideas on logic board prices?
