PowerPC :: Fans Ramped Up And Machine Not Booting

Aug 21, 2008

I'm running a Dual 1.8 GhZ PowerPC G5, with 1.5 gig of RAM. I recently replaced the power supply, as the one that came with the machine died. I left the machine running last night, and this morning I found the fans ramped up as high as they could go, and the screen telling me that one of the external devices had been disconnected improperly. (This had happened once or twice while I was using the computer before I went to bed. Couldn't figure out what the problem was.) I shut down the machine by holding down the power button. When I turned it back on again, it wouldn't boot. I get the startup chime, and the main HD spins up, but the screen remains blank (the light on the display still works the way it should).

I was somehow able to get the machine to start from my backup drive once, so I verified and repaired the main drive. It checked out fine. I tried another restart, and the machine wouldn't boot again. It has since refused to boot, getting no farther than the startup chime. I've tried pressing the power management button. I've tried booting from the Leopard disks, and I've tried zapping the PRAM. However, it appears that the keyboard isn't having any effect, as the last two didn't work either. I've removed and reseated one of the RAM cards, but haven't had a chance to try the rest yet.

PowerPC :: G5 Not Booting - Fans Are Spinning

May 25, 2009

I opened up my G5, to install more RAM, and saw that one of the hard drives was unplugged (I just got it used), and so I connected that, blew some compressed air into it, installed the RAM and closed 'er up. Then I tried to power on and it didn't work (No Chimes, just fans spinning, no video, not even the start up chime). So, I disconnected the hard drive, took out the RAM I put in, and closed it, and it still doesn't boot. Same thing. My keyboard is wireless, but the wireless dongle thing doesn't get any power when it is "powered on". The fans are spinning all the time. (Except when it's powered off, obviously)

MacBook Pro :: MBP Not Booting, Now Fans Run 6000RPM?

Jul 1, 2009

Just been having some pretty big issues with my late 2007 Macbook Pro.Basically, the other day I was playing World of Warcraft, when my Macbook ran out of juice. I plugged in the charger, left it for a few minutes, but no, it wasn't going to wake up again.

So I turned it off, and that was basically it. It wouldn't turn on again, regardless of whether or not the charger was plugged in. Eventually I got it to boot by doing an SMC reset, but now the fans run at 6000RPM and it says it's at 0C and the fans are running at 0RPM.Which is making me believe that the temp sensor is screwed.

Also, it no longer detects my battery, and Windows simply doesn't boot. Mac OS does, but again, I get these issues. System profiler says that my battery has 0 capacity, 0 charge cycles, it is not charging, and it's essentially dead. However, if I unplug the charger, the Macbook continues to stay on, though I can't say how long this is for.

I'd also like to make it clear that the fans start running at this speed from the second it starts up, right before the grey screen appears.I've tried PRAM and SMC resets multiple times with no luck, and I'm wondering if the logic board is just partially fried or something.Hopefully you guys can help me, and no, it's not under warranty, though I do have home insurance which has covered this Macbook before after it got sat on and the screen was crushed.

IMac :: Controlling Max Temp Of Fans / Booting From External HDD

Nov 20, 2010

I have a 2007 Intel 24" iMac (Last of the white plastic editions) and I've recently had troubles with the 7600GT Graphics card. The computer would get strange artifacts all over the screen, before crashing. Unfortunately, it is out of Applecare, so I took it into a shop and had the card replaced. Upon receiving it back, they told me that they replaced the graphics card, but still found problems with it booting up inconsistently. After some testing, they realised it was the Hard Drive controller at fault, and put my harddrive in an external USB enclosure and booted it off that instead. This was an easier solution than replacing the entire logic board, they told me. (and they gave me the enclosure for free).

Now I've brought it home, and set it all up, only to find that the HDD fans are constantly spinning at 5600 RPM, which is deafeningly loud, even so over my room fan. I presume this is because there is no longer any hard drive controller/hard drive in there. I've installed SMC Fan Control, but to my dismay you can only set the minimum fan speed, and not the max. If possible, i'd like to set the max fan speed at a much lower rate, without needing to open up the iMac. So my questions are:
Is there a way I can set the max fanspeed for the HDD, or disable it since there isn't one in there anyway? And is there a better solution for booting my iMac OS onto an external HDD? (i.e. Should I look into buying a firewire 800 drive enclosure instead of this USB 2.0 one?)

MacBook :: Machine Fans Running At (6200RPM) Max Speed

Jan 5, 2009

I was just wondering if it's okay to run the MacBook with the max fan speed (6200RPM) at all times? It's really hot nowadays and my MacBook runs at about 60 degrees Celsius idle. If I run a few CPU intensive apps, the temperature usually rises to 70-80 degrees. This is with the fan running at max speed. So what I want to ask is, will it be okay to keep the fans running at max speed at all times? I'm going to get a notebook cooler soon so that should help with lowering the temperatures a little lower.

PowerPC :: How Can I Speed Up The PowerMac G5 Fans?

Jan 4, 2011

My PowerMac G5 fans hardly ever speed up. I mean they certainly never go full speed or ever close how they sometimes behave on start up. I never get the jet speed noise. Even when I am rendering a movie in FCP, I hardly hear the fans. Right now on idle, iStat pro reports CPU A being 58C and CPU B being 56C. Yet, the fans are still only 400RPM both CPUS Intake/Outake.

PowerPC :: PowerBook G4 - Turn The Fans Off?

Sep 30, 2006

I'm trying to record something through the internal mic (and I'm too cheap to go out and buy a proper mic) and I was wondering if there is anyway through Terminal,or an external program, to force the fans to shut off for a certain period of time? I don't want to turn them off to find they can't turn back on and suddenly the computer is 1000...I just want to keep them off to have a minimal amount of background noise. (And, yes, I'll be running it in a moderate climate so the computer doesn't overheat).

PowerPC :: Powermac G5 SP 1.8 Roaring Fans

Oct 26, 2006

I have a strange problem with the powermac G5 1.8 SP, yes the one with the hardware bug. It was my first mac, what a dissapointment. The bug was partly solved with the firmware upgrade, but after that it still behaved strangely. The fans suddenly go up to maximum speed every hour, then quikcly return to normal. There still have been lockup's / beachballing with USB, and overall slow performance. Now I am running the latest mac osx Tiger version, about a few weeks ago, the fans start revving up almost to maximum, all the time, regardless of cpu load. The cpu temperature reads about 60...65 degrees centigrade when idling (minimum cpu load), cpu setting is already on "reduced speed". After switching-on, cpu temperature is already 60 degrees centigrade. The cpu heatsink is stonecold, as is the exhaust airflow. The cpu 2 fans roar like mad and keep revving up and down. When I remove the plastic transparent cover, the photocell is activated and a red LED comes on, now the fans immediately return to normal speed. Anybody else had similar problems wit the powermac G5 SP 1.8Ghz ?

PowerPC :: G5 Fans Constantly Running At 4K

Jan 19, 2009

My PowerMac's (G5 Dual 1.8GHz procs) fans seem to run at a solid 4k rpm's regardless of what I'm doing, even with CPU usage set to low. I've taken the whole machine apart, cleaning it with canned air and such, but the problem just won't leave me be. The air coming out of the machine is ice cold, and the temperature readings I'm getting are about 86 degrees F for the CPU's and 70 for the HDD, so I'm not sure what gives.. Slot and Backside fans are running at 255 rpm, but the others are all 4k.

PowerPC :: Fans Rev Very Fast At Boot / G4 MDD

Apr 26, 2009

I just picked up a G4 MDD off ebay. Everything seems to be working fine, and it passed tech tools tests for whatever that is worth. The only thing I noticed is that for about 2 or 3 seconds during boot the fans seem to rev up pretty high, then settle back to normal. Does anyone else with this computer have this issue or has anyone heard of it?

PowerPC :: G5 Pro Fans Running Too Fast

Jul 28, 2009

The fans on my G5 Pro are running at close to 3000rpm most of the time. I have read other forums and do not think this is normal at all. I started looking into the fans because I am getting frequent kernel panics (black screen crashes) and thought it might be the machine over heating. My CPUs are at about 50C to 52C and the fans are constantly running that fast.

PowerPC :: PowerMac G5 Has 4 CPU Fans But Only Two Can Work?

Sep 17, 2009

My CPU fans for proc.A are near-constantly capped at 300rpm(system minimum), no matter how damn fast the B-fans spin to compensate.I have: Kept it clean inside. Kept CPU settings on Highest, as usual, but tried Reduced/Auto Repaired permissions Reset the PRAM Reset the PMU Booted into single-user mode Reinstalled Leopard
Obtained & ran Service Diagnostic CD and passed all tests Re-calibrated the CPU's only to notice the speeds now hover around 400rpm now What more can I possibly try? I don't believe a re-seating of CPU's is in order. They work great. All my fans & temperature sensors passed their diagnostics tests, too.I am very irritated by the noise of 2/4 fans overcompensating and getting very loud, from 2000rm-4000rpm, and hey, my Mac is screwed up, and I really need to fix this.

PowerPC :: G5 Fans Run Full Speed All The Time?

Sep 3, 2010

My step-son works for a company that uses a variety of computers in their test dept. and when they upgraded the test equipment they gave the old stuff to employees. My step-son is a dyed-in-the-wool PC guy who doesn't care for Macs so when he saw a G5 PPC sitting there he took it home and gave it to me.

It's a 2.0 GHz dual-processor with 8x AGP video. I checked it out and the only thing "wrong" with it is that someone has set up the fans, all of them, to run full-speed all the time.First, how did they most likely do that and, second, how can I return the fans to their normal operation. This can't be good for the computer and it's so loud and annoying that I'd rather use my G4.It's a great computer otherwise, I hope they didn't do something permanent that would require a new motherboard, that's not in my budget.

PowerPC :: IBook's Fans Louder And Faster

Sep 1, 2006

My iBook just fell of the table, and now refuses to power up. Never again will i say the magSafe is pointless. I (was) running a 800mhz, 640mb G3 iBook, 10.3.9, bought in 2003. The laptop landed on a connected usb cord, which has damaged the usb socket, with the white plastic bit inside the port now broken off, leaving exposed connectors. The laptop did power up initially after the fall, but upon connecting another usb into the remaining usb port, the iBook's fans came on, louder and faster than ive ever heard, before dieing. I simply cannot afford a MacBook right now, and had just upgraded the RAM and OS (10.2.8 - 10.3.9) so that it would last me another year.

Mac Pro :: Fans Speed Up On Boot And Don't Stop - Machine Doesn't Get Past This Phase

Feb 8, 2012

Help! My internal fans speed up on boot (sounds like a jet engine!) and don't ever stop! My machine doesn't get past this phase, either. I have reset the SMC, and was cleaning the system for dust, etc, just before this situation occurred. After the cleaning, I was able to boot up fine. Then I had to re-open the machine and adjust something. I put the panel back on, rebooted, and the fans churned up like a Blackhawk helicopter, and didn't stop!   So, I unplugged the power supply, waited ten minutes, then reconnected the power supply and powered the machine on. The same result! The fans just don't stop.

PowerPC :: 2.7 G5 - Fans Blowing Full Blast And Crashed?

Jan 20, 2008

My menu icons kept flashing on and off for a while. I left the computer by itself for a bit and returned to find the fans blowing at full blast and the cursor wouldn't move. So I pressed the power button to turn off the computer and restarted

My console log showed this repeated about every 30 seconds for about 30 mins

I think the icon flashing was a result of having a film dvd in an external drive like in this thread [URL]

I've ejected a film DVD that was in a Lacie external drive and verified my internal and external hard drives to check for any errors. All were ok.

I'm not too worried about the menu icons flashing but I am bother about the fans blowing like this. The fans have blown at full blast and crashed the computer about 12 times in the last 4 months when I have been away from the computer. So i'm a bit bothered about leaving the G5 alone. I haven't been able to replicate this fan issue - its random. Erasing the HD and installing Leopard doesn't seem to have stopped if from happening (I had the same problem in Tiger)

I have attached a screen capture of my Stat widget below

The slots and backside fans are always stuck at 76rpm and 51rpm. Also CPU A is normally at a high temperature than CPU B. I think the highest i've seen that temperature at has been about 75 but i don't look at it often. These stats were just when I was importing a CD into itunes fans were quietish.

I'm thinking about getting Apple to have a look at my G5 while the Applecare is still valid (it should run out in May).

Can anyone look at their Stats and see if their slot and backside speeds are stuck at similar rpms.

PowerPC :: IMac G5 Failing To Boot Up - Fans Whirring Fast

Dec 16, 2008

Originally my iMac G5 (1.6 GHz 17 inch) was failing to boot up. It would get to the grey screen and the apple and it would just stay there and pretend to be a rocket ship with it's little fan whirring as fast as it could after five minutes. So I reset the SMU, fan stopped, still wouldn't boot. Booted it off the 10.5 install cd (which it was running fine until it wouldn't start up). It wouldn't see the Macintosh HD for a while unless you went to disc utility > partitions and changed it from current to one and instead of applying just let it sit there before switching it back to current. Took about 10 minutes of sitting there.

I did disk repair said there was no problem. Disk permission repair said there was a few problems and said it repaired them. To be safe I backed everything up using target disk mode (where the fan tried to play rocket again even though I reset the SMU), erased my hard drive and reinstalled. Now it shuts down randomly when it goes idle, and takes 10 minutes to start up past loading the dock to load the apple bar Mac HD icon and whatever is on the desktop (which is a single empty folder).
