Power Mac :: What Steps Need To Take To Isolate A Graphics Card Failure In A Power Mac G5

May 29, 2012

a friend recently gave me a g5 power mac that had some issues, and the failure was described as intermittant. The machine supposedly would work properly when booted and start freezing up after time, but if turned on the next day it would work properly for some time. I assumed it was an overheating issue, but apperently there is more to the picture. I have tried booting the machine quite a few times and the display always reads no signal. The machine sounds as if it were booting normally, but there is not output. At first I assumed it was my display cable, which was a DVI-D single link, however the DVI-D dual link cable leads to the same result. Is it nessicary to have a DVI-I cable? None of the error LEDs light up on the motherboard. After doing some hunting I haven't found anyone with the same issue, but I am wondering if I should assume the graphics card is dead. What steps do I need to take to isolate a graphics card failure in a power mac g5?

Hardware :: Transferring Files From SCSI HD To G5?

Sep 3, 2009

Of course I am happy with my G5 (12.1/PPC3.1), but during the whole process of upgrading all the way up from my Macky 512, lots of data, that took me more than a decade to collect, have been left alongside the road. I still have a SCSI HD here, with 12 years of accumulated files, to which I no longer have access. Is regaining those files as simple as buying a SCSI-to-USB cable or should I expect a complicated and problematic procedure ahead of me?

Hardware :: Any Way To Connect SCSI To MacBook Pro

Jun 19, 2010

I have a 17" MacBook Pro and a MicroTek X6EL SCSI flatbed scanner. Obviously, there's no SCSI card in a MacBook Pro, so can anyone tell me if there's any way to use a SCSI scanner with a MacBook Pro? I kind of doubt it, but I thought I'd post this anyway, just in case there's some kind of adapter that can plug into the SCSI scanner and maybe a firewire or usb port on the MBP. (You never know if some genius out there has come up with a converter.)

Hardware :: Old SCSI Peripheral And Negative Scanner

Mar 4, 2010

I have an old SCSI dedicated slide and negative scanner. It produced scans so much superior to the two newer scanners I've tried, so I'd love to put it back into use. The available SCSI-USB adaptors are expensive, and the software for the device isn't available to work with Tiger or Leopard OS anyhow. I am thinking of looking for an ancient Mac to use the scanner with, or maybe even an old PC. Any feedback on what a smart way to bring my old SCSI Polaroid Sprintscan 3500 scanner back to life?

Hardware :: Accessing Data From SCSI Drives

Feb 5, 2008

I could use some help getting data off of my old Mac II ci System 7.1 that I stored some 12 - 13 years ago, I think. The reason I stored it was the Super Drive (floppy) was erratic - worked sometimes and not others. I had the drive replaced, but the problem persisted - someone told me it was probably the floppy drive controller, but I never dug that far into it at the time. I suspect the box has Applenet, but I never used it or any other networking scheme with it, except dial-up modem.

I started reading here about problems associated with accessing SCSI drives, which I assume mine is - it was the big 100 MB! How do I access the data from it? Or, give me a starting link for researching it, please. After I do that, how do I read it or convert it into something I can use in Mac OS X? I had Great Works word processing, spreadsheets, and drawing programs, and some AppleWorks data, along with FileMaker Pro 2.0 (or 2.5, but not 3.0).

Hardware :: Need Info On Orange Micro SCSI-Firewire Converter?

Jan 25, 2009

I need a bit of info on a device I found in a box of surplus stock... it's an Orange Micro SCSI to Firewire (IEEE1394) model 70HTL00010 - Standard 25-pin SCSI female connector to standard Firewire 6-pin female connector.

I discovered that Orange Micro went belly up a few years ago, and I don't have the instruction manual for the device. There seems to be very little concrete info on the web about that device. What I specifically need to know is the voltage of the power adapter (missing) of this device. From what I gathered, it can run without the adapter, but some SCSI devices will require it...

Any link to a PDF file or just the voltage of the adapter would be very helpful! I was thinking of trying to run a nice SCSI slide scanner through the Firewire port of my G5 with that converter.

IMac :: SCSI Tape Drives And Retrospect / Other Backup Solutions

May 26, 2010

So my sister's girlfriend is a professional photographer. Her former consultant get her an SCSI 68-pin connected Sony StorMaster tape drive that backs up her 3 big NAS drives with all her work via EMC Retrospect. This was on a PowerMac G5 tower with an SCSI 68-pin card installed. She's moving and has tasked me with getting it all up and running again at her new place since she's fallen out with the old consultant (who did some weird, weird stuff with their network - why are there 3 switches for the NAS? Why does the Airport run through two of them? WTF?) and got an iMac 27" i7.

Now, problem is, obviously that her i7 has no way of plugging into that SCSI tape drive. She's been using her G5 purely to run Retrospect which is a waste of space and energy. Plus she's moving to a much smaller space, so I really, really want to get it out of there. So here's the thing - I CANNOT find a 68-pin SCSI to USB adapter other than one by Ratoc, which apparently only lets the tape drive function in "mass storage mode" which doesn't really tell me if it will work with Retrospect or not. Is there another solution to keep the current tape drive and plug it into the iMac?

Mac Pro :: Red LED On Daughter Card Blinks With Power On...

May 17, 2009

I just installed 8GB in a early 2009 2.66 Quad (I know I'll lose triple channel) but now it looks like there is a red LED on the daughter board that blinks when the power button is pressed. It also blinks for a second when the computer shuts down.

If you have a surge protector, I know there are two red LEDs on the mother board that blink when the surge protector is switched on (right under the optical drive). I think those are normal since it's been that way from the very beginning. But I don't ever remember seeing the red LED on the daughter board light up when the power button is pressed. The LED is just left of the large heatsink, and it is not part of the LEDs associated with the RAM or Riser.

Mac Pro :: Using Molex To Power Graphics Card

Jun 8, 2010

I'm referring to this thread here:

[URL]

There's 2 images that are missing so I'm a bit confused. It seems pretty basic but I have to ask just to make sure. The cables that came with my card looks exactly like the image in the post. It has 2 inputs PER cable. With the molex split, I'm guessing I plug only 1 in per cable, so does that mean the other input is left hanging with no connection? Is there a specific input on the cable that I use? I notice there's only 3 colors with yellow and black leading to different holes and the brown one leading to the same hole. It seems so basic, but so confused without the 2 missing pictures.

Power Mac :: Compatible Video Card For G5?

Apr 22, 2012

so apparently my G5 needs a video card. I was not booting and wouldn't shut down. I reinstalled tiger but no difference. it will boot in safemode but I get lines across the display. they are in "groups of three" small squiggly lines.

Apple store says they think its video card but they will not support it because its "vintage"... I guess "computer years" are similar to dog years the card it came with is GeForce 6800 Ultra with 256mb ram. OWC has a Radeon 5770 with 1G of ram for 270.00 but this card is not compatible with my machine. it says it needs 10.6 or later... but I cannot upgrade the OS cuz leopard requires Intel processor.

so my question is, if a 1G card is 270.00... one that is compatible with my machine should be less I would think? also, even If I could find a compatible 1G card, I think it would be like having a Ferrari and only using 1st gear you know? cuz I would be bottle necked at the processors.. I would think? so what is compatible with the G5 but more ram than the current 256mb?
