I have a second G5 with 10.3 that I would like to upgrade to 10.4. Will this affect the functionality of Classic mode? I use it for Typestyler. Their OSX version is funky.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI wanted to get started quickly so I put Mac Mail into "Classic" mode. Can't remember how but i think i was asked in a modal dialogue if I wanted to. Been through every Menu item and the Help and can't find any refernece to 3 column view except that it exists. I'm finding Lion a bit rough around the edges even though I'm on 10.7.4. The help is cursory like I said no reference to 3-column except how great it is and can't find a manual for Mac Mail at apple.com.

I have some MS word documents on my MacBook (intel) that I'd like to transfer to my white iBook. I tried plugging an enternal HD into the iBook (that HD contained the docs) but the iBook said that the HD wasn't compatible with it. So I went back on my MacBook and transfered the files from the HD to a memory stick.
However when I plugged that in and tried to open the files, MS word opened but the file did not. The word files are Word 2007 and on the iBook is an older OS9 version of Word. The iBook has Mac OSX panther on it, but the MS word opens in "classic mode". Any ideas on how I can get the docs to open on the iBook?
I still have a couple of OLD apps that require System 9. When I attempt to open either of them I get the "Classic is starting" progress bar, but it never quite finishes. I can start Classic okay with extensions off but then I can't use the printer, and my old copy of Photoshop Elements won't load no matter what I try. I get an error message when I try to run "Install Applications and Classic Support" from my installation disk. I really don't want to part with the $$ for System 10.4 AND two new pieces of software right now.

I get an error that occurred when I try to install Classic OS 9 on a G4 computer with Panther installed that said,system error occured, "Installer Engine error type 10 and 1. The installer OS 9 disc will freeze up when trying to install on my G4 computer. I would like to run both Classic OS 9 and OS X . Also, QuickTime Pro is not showing up when QuickTime is open on the monitor. I have installed Final Cut Pro 4 and also QuickTime Pro with its serial number, but it seems that the QuickTime Pro is not showing up whe openning up QuickTime.

My old G5 dual 1.6 will not go into sleep mode. I had upgraded to 10.5 but several of my photography programs would not run so I reverted back to 10.4 by reinstalling the operating system and not wiping the drive clean. I now must shut down everytime or the G5 will get to the point that all of the cooling fans are running full speed and it will not go into sleep mode automatically. Any suggestions other than a clean install?

Is it best to turn off my 27" i7 processor iMac or put it into sleep mode when it's not in use? ie sleep or leave the house. Also the fan has just turned on, never heard it before. I am watching a video whilst converting another into mp4 format. Is that why?

We have an older model G5 Dual (no Intel Core) at the office that we tried to install CS3 on. I told them that first we would need to upgrade from 10.3.8 to 10.4.10, which they did, and then installed CS3. But they did it without running the disk utility repair permissions after the OS software installation, as I have routinely done with my Mac Mini at home, after the horror I experienced with the 10.4.9 upgrade. For a couple of days, the computer ran fine, but I noticed an increase in the fan spinning up yesterday afternoon, then quirky keyboard things -- like I'd select an item with point and click, and it would highlight everything else near it, I'd go to quit an application and it would ask if I wanted to quit all applications.
After backing up my current InDesign work files on a flash drive (but not the whole darn art folder), I rebooted and it came up in Safe Boot mode 6 times without holding any key down. Attempts to boot from disk have failed, even with holding down the "C" key. It's also not allowing us to type out full passwords at the log-in screen... you start typing and after you hit four digits, it clears, then only allows two digits. How we can:
1.) Force boot from disk, and,
2.) Hopefully fix with disk utility whatever wonkiness is occurring?

Normally, shortly afterwards it would sleep, but now the fans blow and blow and blow and nothing more happens. Using the mouse wakes the Mac again.
Can I use Ethernet cable while using target mode or do I need to use firewire.

I've spent countless hours researching the problem, reading everything on the boards. I tried resetting the PMU, turning off Bluetooth, removing all USB, and all of the other suggestions. Nothing alleviated the problem. Last week I replaced the lithium battery on the mother board because it wasn't keeping the correct time. First, sorry for the longer post - I have to explain everything. I just bought a 24-inch iMac, Mac OS X 10.5.7, 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB, 1067 MHz DDR3. I also just bought an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) from CyberPower. Everything's great, but I still have this one question which is bugging me. What happens when my iMac is in sleep mode and the power goes out? I have set the settings so that my iMac shuts down after 10 minutes of "battery" (UPS) usage, but I am not sure if it will do that when in sleep mode? The UPS is connected to my iMac via USB cable so that they communicate to each other in the case of the power outage, etc. This is what somebody wrote elsewhere on this topic: "Using the Deep Sleep widget, I've worked around this issue: I changed the default sleep behavior to Safe Sleep (hibernation+sleep).When I'm on the grid, my computer will now safe sleep after 3 hours of non-use. If I go off the grid and onto UPS while the MP is awake, the Energy Saver preferences will safe sleep after 1 minute. If for some reason this doesn't occur, Energy Saver will invoke a shut down after 5 minutes. If I go off the grid and onto UPS while the MP is safe sleeping, no big deal since contents are written to the HDD and RAM with this configuration."
I've downloaded the Deep Sleep widget and am using it now. Obviously, the user up there is using a MacPro, and not an iMac, but it should work the same. So, I am not concerned about losing data, and blah, blah, blah... what I am most concerned about is my iMac not working properly because it wasn't shut down properly. I know that there is a very low risk of this happening, but I've spent big bucks on this iMac and I want to make sure that it is shut down properly 100% of the time, if I can help it. If my iMac loses power when in deep sleep, will it be ok? Obviously, I am still using the UPS in deep sleep, but that UPS (battery) power will not last long and will shut down. I am going to turn my iMac off when I don't plan on using it for several days, but if I'm just out and about and the power goes out and my iMac is in deep sleep, will it be ok with the power going off? I contacted CyberPower and this is what they had to say after a long back-and-forth. "You will want to use the deepsleep tool. I had the belief that sleep was the same as windows hibernation where everything is saved to disk. Since deepsleep will save to the hard disk, you would not lose anything when the power is lost when the battery runs out." Despite all of this, I wanted to hear what everyone else thinks about this, especially those of you who might have experience with this kind of stuff. What do the rest of you do when it comes to UPS, etc.?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a G5 dual 2gig and in idle mode it seems to a be slightly overheating as my fans start to blow harder and I get my mouse sticking I am running the latest version of Tiger with 3.5gigs of ram I did post in the IDvD, Logic Pro, and the Final cut pro forums the impact of an upgrade of 8gig of ram on my system whether my apps would run better and the system as a whole.
But I have not been able to get any feed back on this that was clear and I was asked to try here on this forum so here I am. I deeply love my G5 and what it can do I am just wondering if it is working at its most optimum I do regularly do my house keeping i.e. repairing permission and occasionally using Tech tool Pro to look over the system but nothing out of the ordinary jumps out. I have a screen shot of my activity monitor and cpu monitor but I do not know how to attach it.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just bought myself an entry-level MBP 13". Coming from PB 12" 1.5 ghz, this is a major upgrade for me, and I am happy about it. However, there is one thing that I cannot figure out.
I have been a happy user of Dell 2209WA, which works perfectly with my PB. Today, I connected the monitor to my brand-new MBP via Mini DisplayPort to VGA adaptor. After connecting it, I closed the machine and woke up using my mouse. Immediately after that, the monitor said "Entering Power Saving Mode." I clicked the mouse, then the picture was sort of blurry. Then the monitor kept on entering power saving mode... As for the picture quality, even after I opened system pref. and detected the monitor, it was still not good. I'm totally bummed, because I really like the monitor.
I have a 2.0 GHz early 2005 Power Mac G5 (7,3) that won't get past the light blue screen at start-up. I've tried everything - reset the PRAM, Apple Hardware Check (on overnight loops, everything came back OK), fsck (all OK), repaired my HD and permissions on it, and then erased the drive using Target Disk Mode and another Mac, and attempted to reinstall OSX from the install disk that came with it (with OSX Tiger). I've tried switching out the RAM with no luck.
The only thing I haven't tried is a new video card (the installed one is an ATI Radeon 9600). Here's what it does: powers on with the usual chime, then moves on to the white Apple screen, the wheel spins, then it moves on to a darker blue screen, then it finally moves on to a lighter blue screen with an arrow, and it just stays there. It will boot into safe mode (pressing shift), but I can't even upgrade to Leopard in safe mode, much less figure out what's wrong.
My Daughter's iPod requires iTunes in 10.1 or higher, but my PowerMac G4 won't allow me to upgrade (I currently have v 9.2.1). when I downloaded the installation thing it says I needed OS 10.5.3 and I'm running 10.4.11.
I have a dual 1.6Ghz power PC G4 processor.
For that matter, does anyone know if I can upgrade my OS to 10.5 or above and/or if it would be worthwhile to do so?

My PowerMac G4 has an issue that has developed as of late where it goes into screen saver mode and fails to come back out of it. The mouse and keyboard are both unresponsive. Sometimes it goes back to the desktop and sometimes it doesn't. The only way to shut it off is to push and hold down on the power button. I have added an HP all in one printer to the computer.
