When my computer is about to go into sleep mode or when it is being activated from being inside sleep mode or any time my computer goals idle for 10 minutes or so something inside my computer clicks. So far there has been no problems is this a normal sound to here?

I am working on a friend's G5. It won't go to sleep. The monitor does, but not the CPU. I have upgraded the firmware, to 10.4.10, zapped the pram, corrected permissions. Just at a loss.
This computer worked fine at work where she had it originally, but when she shut it down and took it home, it has insomnia. Also, one of the front fans sounds like it is scraping or hitting something. It is not a loud noise and the fans still work, just annoying to her since it won't sleep. (Sounds like my one month old).

My old G5 dual 1.6 will not go into sleep mode. I had upgraded to 10.5 but several of my photography programs would not run so I reverted back to 10.4 by reinstalling the operating system and not wiping the drive clean. I now must shut down everytime or the G5 will get to the point that all of the cooling fans are running full speed and it will not go into sleep mode automatically. Any suggestions other than a clean install?

Is it best to turn off my 27" i7 processor iMac or put it into sleep mode when it's not in use? ie sleep or leave the house. Also the fan has just turned on, never heard it before. I am watching a video whilst converting another into mp4 format. Is that why?

after having installed Leopard, my Mac doesn't go to sleep anymore. When I activate the sleep mode, it begins to "shut down" and the fans begin to blow. Normally, shortly afterwards it would sleep, but now the fans blow and blow and blow and nothing more happens. Using the mouse wakes the Mac again.
Could someone please explain to me why my computer is shutting down in sleep-mode. In addition, when it happens, the fan goes into hyperblow, which doesn't make sense because it would not be operating if the system were completely shut down. It acts like it is shut down but won't respond or wake up, etc. I re-loaded my system software per the Mac Store Genius' advice, but that didn't work. Is it possible that my power supply is going?

But now it's causing sleep problems with my computer. When the Data Port is connected to USB, the computer won't sleep. I unplug it and it sleeps just fine.

I've been fighting bad sleep crashes for over a year. Sometimes it would freeze when it started sleep, sometimes when trying to wake from a sleep. I've spent countless hours researching the problem, reading everything on the boards. I tried resetting the PMU, turning off Bluetooth, removing all USB, and all of the other suggestions. Nothing alleviated the problem. Last week I replaced the lithium battery on the mother board because it wasn't keeping the correct time. First, sorry for the longer post - I have to explain everything. I just bought a 24-inch iMac, Mac OS X 10.5.7, 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB, 1067 MHz DDR3. I also just bought an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) from CyberPower. Everything's great, but I still have this one question which is bugging me. What happens when my iMac is in sleep mode and the power goes out? I have set the settings so that my iMac shuts down after 10 minutes of "battery" (UPS) usage, but I am not sure if it will do that when in sleep mode? The UPS is connected to my iMac via USB cable so that they communicate to each other in the case of the power outage, etc. This is what somebody wrote elsewhere on this topic: "Using the Deep Sleep widget, I've worked around this issue: I changed the default sleep behavior to Safe Sleep (hibernation+sleep).When I'm on the grid, my computer will now safe sleep after 3 hours of non-use. If I go off the grid and onto UPS while the MP is awake, the Energy Saver preferences will safe sleep after 1 minute. If for some reason this doesn't occur, Energy Saver will invoke a shut down after 5 minutes. If I go off the grid and onto UPS while the MP is safe sleeping, no big deal since contents are written to the HDD and RAM with this configuration."
I've downloaded the Deep Sleep widget and am using it now. Obviously, the user up there is using a MacPro, and not an iMac, but it should work the same. So, I am not concerned about losing data, and blah, blah, blah... what I am most concerned about is my iMac not working properly because it wasn't shut down properly. I know that there is a very low risk of this happening, but I've spent big bucks on this iMac and I want to make sure that it is shut down properly 100% of the time, if I can help it. If my iMac loses power when in deep sleep, will it be ok? Obviously, I am still using the UPS in deep sleep, but that UPS (battery) power will not last long and will shut down. I am going to turn my iMac off when I don't plan on using it for several days, but if I'm just out and about and the power goes out and my iMac is in deep sleep, will it be ok with the power going off? I contacted CyberPower and this is what they had to say after a long back-and-forth. "You will want to use the deepsleep tool. I had the belief that sleep was the same as windows hibernation where everything is saved to disk. Since deepsleep will save to the hard disk, you would not lose anything when the power is lost when the battery runs out." Despite all of this, I wanted to hear what everyone else thinks about this, especially those of you who might have experience with this kind of stuff. What do the rest of you do when it comes to UPS, etc.?

I tried reseting the pram with no success. I deleted the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file. but it still doesn't turn off, only the monitor. I've set it to 1 minute but only the monitor will turn off. Manually putting the computer to sleep work's fine.

Mostly when I am streaming video..or at times the fan comes on, it sounds super high then boom. sleep mode again. After hitting the space bar, it comes back on, but it'll happen again shortly after. View 5 Replies View RelatedAs of last night, my MBP started acting very strangely. After entering my username and password, it would enter the desktop for a short period of time and then kick back into sleep mode; the screen would turn back to black. Sometimes it will let me stay on the desktop for a long time and other times it will hardly let me stay on the desktop. I called apple support and they had me start the computer in safe mode; even then it occasionally kicks me out.
The tech guy said that it was a "strange software issue" and not a hardware issue. I thought it was a hard drive issue; my hard drive makes an odd sound when it unlocks (a grinding sound), but it has been doing that for quite some time with no issues. I tried to reset the SMC and it didn't do anything.
How should I remedy this problem? Is this a hard drive issue? Hard drive failure? Has the grinding sound finally caught up with me? I am running OS X; not leopard or snow leopard. I know I need to upgrade, but this shouldn't be happening.
I just had the original 300 GB hard drive fail in my aluminum 24" inch iMac running the latest update of Leopard. I wasn't able to save it using diskwarrior (diskwarrior said it was some sort of mechanical failure) but I was able to recover most of the data from it by booting from an external hard-drive.
So I went out and purchased a brand new Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB drive. The install went fine, it found the drive partitioned it and installed Leopard successful. Then is crashed and disappeared when I left it alone to run all the software updates. I came back and the computer was stuck on "Restart Required" after downloading all the updates. I went to hit restart now, and the system just hanged, wouldn't do anything. So I hard powered down the system and restarted it. It came up with nothing, just stuck on the White Screen of Death. So I plugged the external drive back in and booted from it. Mac OSX couldn't find the drive and diskwarrior would crash if I tried to run it. I tried to boot up from the OSX start-up disk and it couldn't find the drive either.
So I took the case apart and made sure all the connections were solid and the drive was mounted correctly. Everything looked fine so I plugged it in and it started up fine. Finished the updates and the iMac ran great.
So I thought maybe it was overheating, so I've installed smcfancontrol and started to monitor the temp of the drive. I also took the mac apart again and sucked out any dust in the fans or vents. The drive never goes over a 105 F, so it doesn't seem to be overheating.
However, this is where the problem is consistent: everytime the iMac goes into sleep mode, it crashes and the iMac is unable to find the hard-drive again. Unless I unplug it completely for 5 minutes or so. Once I unplug it, it finds the drive and operates like a champ.
I think maybe there's an issue powering the drive back on? Anyone have any ideas?

After using my MacBook Pro I close the laptop and it goes to sleep. Later when I return to it and open it, sometimes it can't find the network. The computer is able to see that I have an Apple Network available, but it won't connect.Sometimes when I try to connect, it gives me a timeout. How I fix it is to walk over to the router and unplug it and plug it back in. After I get the green light again, I go to the Apple Network and it works.

Permissions and this check show no errors, the only error sleep mode failure. Boot up is very slow as well as wake up when possible is slow. I've got a dual G5 running Panther and I put it to sleep when I go to work in the morning. Last night, I wanted to try out Tiger (yes, I know - I'm way behind the times) so I installed it on a FireWire drive and booted off it for a couple of hours to see how things worked. I then went back to my internal Panther drive, and everything is ok except for one thing: when I hit "sleep", it goes to sleep, the screens turn off, and then for some reason I immediately hear the internal drives spin back up and the thing turns on again! Why can't it stay asleep?

When I awaken my G5 in the morning (when its chilly) it goes back to sleep almost immediately. This may repeat twice before it finally stays on. I initially thought it was my HD, a new purchase at the time. However, I have switched to another internal drive and have been experiencing identical results. I've run TechTool Pro, Onyx, Applejack, and Disk Utility, thinking it was a HD issue, but having switched drives, I'm thinking it must be a hardware issue of some sort.

I have a G5 Duo 2.7Ghz with 4Gb of ram (supplied with 2Gb, 2Gb added later).
Sometimes when it goes to sleep it can't be activated again and I have to trip the power switch and restart. When it goes to sleep the machine begins to run flat out as if it was about to take off!
I am having this weird problem. Suddenly my Trackpad refuses to accept all left clicks, also including the lower left real click. I can't do anything except booting into safe mode, then back to normal mode.

I am running Mac Mini as a home server (turns out to be not a great idea, btw), and even though I set the preference to never sleep or shut down, it does go to sleep when there is no activity for long time. Since I am using it as home server, it should stay awake all the time or at least wake up from sleep when there is incoming ping from other computer, but it just goes to sleep.
