MacBook Pro :: Dead PRAM Battery Causing Failed Startup?

Jul 28, 2008

one of my Al Powerbooks decided to kernel panic twice in the past two days and both times fail to start up afterwards. The symptoms would be that when I pushed the power button, I wouldn't hear the Apple startup sound and it would just sit there.

Well, after a few tries and some sadness, I decided to remove the PRAM battery card and voila, computer boots up perfectly! This has actually happened twice (removed PRAM card, booted up, then put PRAM card back in, then eventually exact same situation occurred again), does anyone know if a PRAM battery card can possibly wreak suck havok on a G4 running Leopard.

OS X :: Dead System Shows Unsatisfied With Genius Bar?

Nov 2, 2010

I have an early 2008 Macbook Pro (the ones released just before the switch to unibody) with the model of graphics card (NVidia 8600) that was faulty. I've experienced graphic glitches and the machine freezing since I bought it.My timeline with this machine is:I brought the machine to the Apple store where I got a replacement logic board.I still had the same problems, so I had to bring the machine back to the store, where they said they would replace the logic board again.

IMac :: Power Outage Now System Dead?

Mar 30, 2010

I put my i5 to sleep around midday, came home from work @ 4, and my iMac would not respond to keyboard, mouse, or power button mashing. My wife noted the power had gone out upon seeing the microwave clock. I checked the outlet (her Macbook was plugged into the other receptacle), and there's still power going to my machine.

IMac :: When Open System Find Dead Pixels?

Oct 26, 2009

I've just been up to my local electronics store to buy the new base 21.5" iMac. I noticed the display model had a dead pixel in the centre of the screen so I asked once I had paid for it if I could open it and check the iMac before leaving, the store said that was fine.I opened it up and it had 3 dead pixels! So they swapped it over for another and that had another 2! (It's either dead pixels, or dirt behind the glass, either is unaccepted in my eyes). So I just got a refund as they said they wouldn't open anymore.

Hardware :: Lacie D2 Quadra Mounting At The Same Time Another?

Sep 11, 2009

I have 2 Lacie d2 Quadra HD 750gb that have both failed to mount at about the same time.

I have tried to connect them with a different power supply and on 2 different mac, I there tried to connect them via all the different ports, USB, firewire 400 & 800, but the drive won't show up.

I have opened the case and disconnected all cables and reconnected with external SATA to USB converter cable and power supply. When I do this the drive mounts and works as normal external drive.

There is a problem between the external questions and the internal drive, does anyone have a suggestions as to how I can get this to work.

Hardware :: External Storage Solution Raid URGENT!!! LACIE 4BIG QUADRA OR 5BIG NETWORK?

May 29, 2010

Basically I need a large storage option that is set up to be resistant to loss for my high def video and images. My 500 GB iMac is full to the brim but I don't want to spend 5-800 dollars to back everything up.

I have a 500 GB time machine that is also full so I assume it's just erasing old records with new as we go along now.

I want to purchase 4-5 of the lacie 1TB drives and set up a RAID array external to the iMac. Can I do this? Is it a process a computer novice can do?

If I got 5x1TB drives and did RAID 1 or something I would have 4TB of storage and one drive could die and still maintain all my data? Is there a better RAID version like RAID 6,10 etc...?

OS X :: New And Used Macbook Startup Options - Cannot Start The System?

Jun 24, 2009

I bought a used macbook yesterday morning and everything seemed to be working properly at first, but by the end of the day it started having a problem when booting up. 2 gigs of RAM (updated by previous owner)160 gig Hard Drive (updated by previous owner)Everything else is the same as this listing. The problem: when booting up, the screen turns on, but just remains white, without showing the apple logo and spinning circle. I left it like that for a good 10 minutes, and it never continued to boot, it just stayed in that state. I shut it off, then started it in safe mode, which worked fine. From there I restarted it, and it worked normally. The same thing happened again later (white screen, turn off, boot in safe mode, boot normally).

IMac :: Replaced HD But System Freezes On Startup

Nov 10, 2009

I have a early 09 iMac 2.93Ghz with 6GB of ram. About a month ago it kept freezing at the grey startup screen. I took it to Apple and two trips to Apple later my hard drive was replaced. One month later here I am and the problem is happening again, the same exact problem. I turn on the iMac it goes to the grey screen, the beach ball "like" thing starts spinning and then it freezes in the middle of it and I have to do a hard power off(hold down the power button). Any ideas!? I already scheduled a appointment with Apple tomorrow afternoon but its a royal pain in the a** to keep shuffling my iMac between home and the Apple store. This will be my 4th trip in for the same problem, btw.

OS X :: Slow Startup Time Affect System Performance

Nov 20, 2009

Just upgraded to a 27" quad-core iMac yesterday and I noticed the startup time is much slower than it should be once I migrated all of my files from my old 24" iMac over. I usually keep my system up for months at a time, so startup time isn't an issue, but the question is: Does a slow startup time indicate that once I'm up and running, the system could be much quicker, too, or is that slow issue solely restricted to just the startup time?

Since then, I have taken steps to free up some space by deleting files and creating archives.owever, today, when I switched on my Mac today, nothing came on except a picture of a folder and a "?" on it. My question is, what can I do to start/restart my Mac and is there anything else I can do to free up my Startup disc.

Hardware :: System Freezes Or Hangs On Boot / Startup

Apr 27, 2008

I have a mac pro running leopard (purchased in 2/08) and it was running beautifully for almost 2 months with no hangs, crashes or freezes. Then, for some reason, today when I turned it on, it would not boot. It would get to the apple logo, then just sit there for a few minutes, then reboot itself and the same thing would happen. I pulled out the ethernet cable, unplugged all usb except keyboard/mouse and it would then (sometimes) boot into the system, log me in and present me with the UI.

I then quickly performed a soft reboot and it would get to the desktop. However, I can only use it for anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes before it would completely lockup. The clock freezes, the mouse freezes and it just sits there forever. I have tried booting into Vista (BootCamp) and it also freezes before startup is complete. If I hold down Option and then select the System disk, it will either just hang forever or get to the desktop and then freeze again....................

MacBook Pro :: Sound Muted But On Startup System Always Chimes

Apr 9, 2012

I'm running OS X 10.6.8 on a 2.7 GHz i7 Macbook Pro with a 250Gb Apple SSD TS256C. Since last Autumn, after a problem that saw the SSD replaced by Apple and me needing to migrate my profile across from an older Macbook, every time the system shuts down it forgets my sound settings. So no matter how I set the sound before powering down it always chimes on start up. It's entirely possible that this may be a problem from the migration, but I don't know how to rectify the issue.

OS X :: System Running Very Slow / Hangs At Gray Screen Ion Startup

Jan 29, 2010

Macbook Air, Rev A. Worked like a charm for 1.5 years.Upgraded to a Rev c SSD and gave the Rev A to the wife. She installed NOTHING.Within a few weeks it started running VERY slow. I'm talking 2 minutes of beach ball per click.I use Disk Utility to check the drive. No problems of any kind.

Rebooting would take -- and I'm not exaggerating -- over an hour. First it would sit with a grey screen for 5 minutes. Then with an apple logo for 10 more. Then with the little spinning circle for 30. Then the desktop background would show up and sit for 20 minutes, etc.

Was gonna upgrade to Snow Leopard so what the heck, backed it all up and installed Snow Leopard. To my surprise, it instaled Snow Leopard on top of the old OS -- it kept all the files around so no need to restore from backup.

Speed problem SOLVED!Then a few weeks later the same problems. This time I check the drive AND run the hardware test. No problems.I ERASED the entire drive. I installed Snow Leopard. All is good for a few weeks. Then the problem came back a 3rd time.

I go to reinstall a 3rd time and Snow Leopard doesn't even acknowledge that there's a hard drive in the machine! And when I look in system profiler it says there's no drive of any sort. Yet it will reboot and run... just VERRRRRYYYY slowly.

I'm ready to replace the drive with a Runcore SSD or some such other device but I want to be sure the problem is the drive and not some other aspect of the hardware (motherboard, RAM, etc.)Anyone ever seen this? Anyone have any ideas as to how to investigate, solve, conquer, save myself from madness??

OS X :: Stopping Startup Processes That Are Not Under The System Preferences Users Panel

Feb 21, 2010

I use the latest macos on a late 2009 mini.

I use a program called smart response. It drives electronic whiteboards and a wireless response system.

I use it at home, and I never actually connect my computer to the hardware. I use it to prepare stuff at home.

Is there a way to stop these processes from loading? I can kill them, but as a mac os newbie, I have no idea how to take control of them in the mac.

The windows equivalent would have been to go and disable the startup process under the administrative tab in the control panel.

MacBook Pro :: Unable To Boot System / Grey Screen Of Death At Startup

Oct 1, 2010

The other day my 1st gen MBP functioned without any probs, until it suddenly powered down. After I removed the question marks from my eyes, I offcourse tried to reboot it.

But it never makes it beyond the grey screen, sometimes untill the apple logo, sometimes not even that far.
Offcours I googled around first to gather some info before I decided to put this problem down on this board. I found this could be a HDD failure, but in those cases, with other people, it could be powered holding apple + s, and doing some checks that way.
Mine doesn't even come that far

I have a second hand 1st gen MBP with upgraded HDD and RAM, snow leopard, and coincidently since last week no more battery... so i may have powered down a completely unprepared mac by tripping over the wire, once or twice...

OS X :: Unable To Boot System / Grey Screen With Apple Logo At Startup

Jan 12, 2011

I own an iBook G4. I could not get it to boot up, it would just go to a grey screen with the apple symbol and a timer/clock that looked like a gear.FYI: I may provide more information than necessary in the text below. I'm not sure what is and isn't relevant.

Following some advice I found in this forum I got out my old OS disks to boot from the disc instead of the hard drive. I intended to archive the old hard drive and install my latest OS (10.4.6 on the disc, 10.4.11 was the version I had been running on the machine, I believe). The machine told me it needed 4.5 Gb to install 10.4.6 Tiger, but I only had 4.0 Gb left on the hard drive. So instead, I archived and installed with the OS that came with the computer originally, 10.3.4.

I got things going, did the archive and install, and got to the log in screen. Unfortunately, I could not remember the password, so I booted up in single user mode, and entered the following to get into the machine:

1. mount -uw /
2. rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
3. shutdown -h now

This got me in with a new admin login, and I started up in 10.3.4. I soon noticed that I could still see all of the files that I put on the hard drive on my old operating system. I thought I shouldn't be able to see them, but since I could I decided to try to copy them to an external hard drive. When I did, I got an error message saying that there was a read/write error. I was not entirely surprised, but I decided it was time to turn back to the forums for help.

What I want to do is copy everything from my old hard drive onto an external hard drive, make room on the iBook hard drive to reinstall my latest operating system (10.4.6). Once I've done that I'd like to get the essential files back onto the iBook from the external hard drive and continue using my computer (even though it is a dinosaur).
