Hardware :: External Storage Solution Raid URGENT!!! LACIE 4BIG QUADRA OR 5BIG NETWORK?

May 29, 2010

Basically I need a large storage option that is set up to be resistant to loss for my high def video and images. My 500 GB iMac is full to the brim but I don't want to spend 5-800 dollars to back everything up.

I have a 500 GB time machine that is also full so I assume it's just erasing old records with new as we go along now.

I want to purchase 4-5 of the lacie 1TB drives and set up a RAID array external to the iMac. Can I do this? Is it a process a computer novice can do?

If I got 5x1TB drives and did RAID 1 or something I would have 4TB of storage and one drive could die and still maintain all my data? Is there a better RAID version like RAID 6,10 etc...?

Hardware :: Storage Solution To Serve Both Windows And OS X Through Network?

I've decided to buy a Mac Mini to use as a work machine and then depending on it's performance, I will either replace it with an iMac and my girlfriend will use the Mac Mini as her work machine or just buy another Mac Mini for her. However, at the moment, in addition to me using the Mac Mini, I am currently using a Windows machine and my girlfriends work machne is a Windows machine. Is there a storage solution that could serve both Windows and OSX through the network? How about some kind of file server like Linux or Windows? What would you recommend?

Hardware :: Lacie D2 Quadra Mounting At The Same Time Another?

Sep 11, 2009

I have 2 Lacie d2 Quadra HD 750gb that have both failed to mount at about the same time.

I have tried to connect them with a different power supply and on 2 different mac, I there tried to connect them via all the different ports, USB, firewire 400 & 800, but the drive won't show up.

I have opened the case and disconnected all cables and reconnected with external SATA to USB converter cable and power supply. When I do this the drive mounts and works as normal external drive.

There is a problem between the external questions and the internal drive, does anyone have a suggestions as to how I can get this to work.

Mac Pro :: RAID Enclosure - Need Swivel Mounting Solution

So my Mac Pro RAID enclosure project is almost complete, just working through the last few steps. Sitting freely on the floor of my Mac Pro case and I want to mount them to the underside of the shelve that generally houses the optical drives and PSU in a MP. Ideally, I will find something that can swivel so I can turn the backplanes 360 degrees when the side door of the case is removed.

Hardware :: Best Solution For A Large Amount Of Storage 10-20tb

Oct 28, 2010

way to store 10 to 20 TBs of data. It needs to be readily accessible, but it doesn't need to be extremely fast. A normal usb 2 connection is fine, as well as firewire or esata or ethernet. I do transfer large files, but there is no urgent need for them to be lightening quick. As it stands now, I have several external drives just hooked up to my computer. I'd like to avoid continuing that method. I want only one volume to show up on my mac. It doesn't have to be through raid striping, though I don't really know of another way; maybe just a container volume that has all the drives in it?

Hardware :: Dual Drive Storage System With RAID

Jun 12, 2009

I was looking at this HD: [URL]. Could someone please summarize for me what is a "Dual-drive Storage System with RAID?" I have some ideas of what it is... it involves mirroring, and holding two copies of data to make sure one doesn't lose data, correct? This is a 4 TB drive... what if I want 4 TBs worth of storage and not two copies of 2 TBs worth of storage? Am I allowed to turn mirroring off and get a straightforward 4 TBs worth of storage? Please feel free to throw in any quick facts about RAID you may want to.

Hardware :: Set Up Network Area Storage?

Sep 24, 2009

I am looking to set up network area storage at home rather than have all my files jamming up my Mac Book hard drive. I'm considering one of two options but I am pretty new to network area storage and therefore after a bit of advise. My personal computer is a Mac although I use a PC laptop for work, both will need to access the networked hard drive. At this stage I just want to store files and itunes but may, in time, wish to stream video content to my TV. Option 1 is to purchase a network area hard drive such as buffalo link station. Option 2 is to purchase an air port extreme and attach a hard drive via USB. This option is slightly more expensive however I am wondering if the benefits of the airport will provide a faster connection?

Will any NAS do this? Any recommended brands? And, more importantly: can I treat a NAS drive exactly like a regular drive?

MacBook :: How To Amount LaCie External HDD?

Apr 22, 2010

A few months ago I bought a new LaCie "Little Disk" external 500 GB HDD. Has Firewire and USB power.

Formatted for both Windows and Mac (Fat32). Everything was going fine. One day the disk would not eject. That is when the problems started. I had to manually remove the disk without ejecting.

Having done this with my other LaCie external HDD without any future problems (it would always remount) I didn't think anything of it.

Since then, the disk will not mount on either the Mac or the PC. The disk will not mount using the Firewire or the USB power connectivity even though the blue power light is on.

When I open Disk Utility with the LaCie plugged in, Disk Utility crashes. When I open Disk Utility before the LaCie is plugged in and then plug the LaCie in afterwards, it crashes.

I tried plugging the LaCie in before booting my MacBook to see if that worked, but that method prevented the MB from booting at all!

Contacted LaCie about this but have yet to hear back. I'm convinced that this can be solved cleanly without any data loss. Suggestions?

OS X :: Time Machine Cannot See External Airport AEBS Drive - Need Incremental Backup Solution?

Jul 13, 2009

I have a Mac Book Pro. Due to the total amount of files and data, I keep my media files on an external drive connected via USB to my Airport AEBS. Of course, I connect wirelessly to the AEBS.I use Time Machine to back up my computer onto an second external drive also connected to my AEBS in the same fashion. However, TM does not allow me to choose the files or folders from the external AEBS drive containing all of my media files to also incrementally back them up using Time Machine. It should. I wish it would. Why won't it? Can I make it work that way? If so, how? TM is the best incremental backup program I've seen. I really want to back up my media that way. But I don't want to tether my laptop by connecting an external drive directly to it, and I don't have the space to store my media files directly on my laptop.

Is this normal for an external HDD? How can I make it spin down when it's not being used?

Having said above, the LaCie drive does spin down when I put the iMac to sleep.

The LaCie seems to be fine.

However, on the Mini, it's suddenly mounting (both partitions--don't ask, I made them long ago and can't recall why) with a little lock at the bottom left of the icon. When I Get Info and look at permissions I have to unlock it and all/any users listed are noted with "Custom" preferences.

I can't R/W--I get "The folder "Stuff" could not be opened because you do not have sufficient access privileges.

Anyways, on a PC you go to network under my computer (or just computer or 7 now) and in there it is listed along with the other computers on the network. That's all good. On the Mac side you can see it as well, and that's all good. Here is what I am trying to figure out; on a pc in the computer navigation bar you can type addresses. For example the drive was not popping up earlier under the "network", so I just type "//DriveName" into the bar and it opened it up as if I had clicked it.

Hardware :: AirPort Express + Get NAS (Network Attached Storage)?

Buying a second computer to have constantly running to store movies/music is out of the question since I just want to have it for my MBP, 360, and roommates PS3. I want to get a NAS (Network Attached Storage), but the main router is in my roommates room. I don't trust my roommate to keep a $100+ hard drive safely in his room, and he won't want the responsibility of making sure nothing happens to it when people are over and what not. I already have an AirPort Express in my room. I know the AirPort Express can be used as a network extender. Would I be able to connect the NAS to the AirPort Express via Network Cable and have it work?

Hardware :: Home Network - Central Storage Point

May 7, 2009

Just about to move to a new place I'm trying to think of the best way to network it with what existing equipment I have. So I will be getting virgin cable installed as my ISP which comes with wireless router although not sure which one. What I basically want to have is a home network with a central storage point for all my music and movies/tv. I currently have the time capsule for backing up my macbook, I lead to believe that this cannot be used to store my music collection which I wanted streamed to other laptop on the same network.

I also have a WD My Book NAS(networked attached storage) drive as well as various other external usb hard drives. I have also just looked at the apple air port express base station which I may purchase. So with all this hardware in mind how would I go about setting up my network effectively so that I can keep everything(music/tv/movies) centrally and be able to access through laptops which I plan to have around the house.
