Jun 12, 2012There seems to be a pattern with major updates from Apple and the ability of the servers providing the content - be it iTunes or iOS or Mac OS updates - I have been unable to download successfully the larger updates but smaller (22MB for AirPort Utility) work fine. The annoying thing is that in almost all cases the error doesn't occur until after the download is complete - meaning it takes up all the time and bandwidth etc with no result and you have to start all over again.
This has happened to enough people and with enough different software releases that I posit that it is not the result of any particular configuration of networking and or hardware and or firmware and or OS version etc - but that the it is a systemic issue on the provider side of things.
Perhaps they (Apple's content providers) should stagger access or something - by time zone - or Apple should release updates over the course of a week - not all on the same day. I would much rather get a message that the server is busy try agian later - or have one update a day - and have it work on the first try - that to waste time retrying the same downloads over and over again.

May 27, 2010I keep running into applications that I can't run because the installer downloads as separate files.
It'll have a file with all sorts of pieces to the program but nothing that brings it together to run it. If there is it's only an autorun- I try the autorun(.inf) and it says there's no application specified to run it.
I have run across these types of applications more times than I can count. Every time I can't find how to make them work, and so I have to give up on them. These programs I download ARE made for Macs, so it's very frustrating- I don't understand. My husband said those types simply can't be run on a mac.

Jul 21, 2010So a while ago i installed iGetter and jDownloader to handle some of my downloading needs. These have both been uninstalled a while ago and i seem to have the problem that if i navigate to a file in my browser it will not download, it just sits there and does nothing.This is really anoyying as i can't download any files anymore
I presume one of these applications has disabled this behaviour in os x so that it can hijack it and use the app to download files. Does anybody know how to revert this so that browsers can handle downloads properly?

Mar 31, 2010I'm downloading different files into excel (some tab delimited, some csv, some xls) from different places and they all open in excel with incredibly weird formatting. Basically the separation of each column makes no sense. When other people download the same exact files, their files appear normally, with each category in a different column. So there's something going on with my excel.
When I download a credit card statement, for example, it comes out like this:
"02/03/2010$18""82USPS 35960795520803QPS NEW YORK XXXXXXXXXXXXXX48(Standard Purch)"
With the quotes showing the columns... so the date and half of the price are in one column and the cents from the price and the vendor and the last four digits in the second column.

May 17, 2012As stated in the title, when I try to download a file from the internet, clicking on the link associated to the file will not start a download, but instead opens a new tab in my browser showing the url of the associated file. If I then right-click and choose 'Download linked file as...' the file can be downloaded with no issues in most of the cases, at least as long as the website allows right-click downloads to happen.I have tried resetting Safari, emptying the cache and, of course, updating my software. It is a midly annoying problem, but it doesn't happen when I use other web browsers in my iMac.

May 5, 2009I have a problem with downloading files on my OSX partition. When using firefox/opera/safari to download a file, I often get an error "the source file could not be read, please try again later or contact system administrator" (Firefox) the other browsers just stop.

Jun 18, 2012I was doing a software update in an outdated Mac OS X 10.7.3 to get all the latest updates through its Apple Software Update. However, one of them failed to upgrade: iTunes v10.6.1 to v10.6.3. After rebooting to let Mac OS X 10.7.3 to 10.7.4, Apple Software Updater shows it 97% partially downloaded. I have over 31 GB free, so it can't be a free disk space problem. I tell it to resume download, but it quickly fails from 169 MB to about 172.7 MB (176.9 MB is the whole size) with "The update "iTunes" can't be installed. The update could not be verified. It may have been corrupted during the downloading. The update will be downloaded and checked again the next time that Software Update runs."Â

May 17, 2012I also trashed the Adobe Reader Internet Plug-in in the Library. I still can't open some pdf files (e.g., bank monthly statements). A window opens showing the statement (which should be pdf), but when I try to save: File>Save, I get a window that opens that includes: "Export As: Statement. html" and "Format: Page Source." The Format selection feature opens a pulldown menu that allows "Web Archeive" as the only other choice. Is there anything else here that I need to delete? How is it that I can still download some pdf files, view them, and save them? This problem is happening on the monthly statements for a couple of financial institutions and not others!
