OS X V10.7 Lion :: Cannot Remove A Folder From Trash Bin
Jun 27, 2012
I cannot remove a folder from my trash bin. I had deleted it from an external drive and tried to empty the trash, and each time I do, I hear the usual sound of the trash emptying, but the folders remain, and the dock icon still shows contents in the bin. What should I do?
Info:
MacBook Pro with Retina display, Mac OS X (10.7.4)
I recently moved a hidden folder (starts with .) to the trash. However, I am unable to press the 'empty' button. My question is, of course, how do I delete or restore my hidden folder?
While dragging a folder from one Finder window to another, I accidentally released the mouse button when the folder was over the Toolbar. The folder now appears in the Toolbar and I can't remove it.
I placed a folder in the toolbar of a finder window to the right of the view icons, and now I can't remove it. The folder goes to a folder in use but I can't find a way to remove it from the toolbar. Anytime I open a finder window the alias folder is up there now. How do I remove it?

Using Yahoo in Outlook on OS X Mountain Lion - deleted emails repeatedly reappear in in-box after a minute or so, but when I delete them from the Trash they no longer reappear. This has been going on for weeks
How can I permanently remove the Photoshop Updater folder from the Documents folder, and then re-locate it to a more appropriate folder, like the Library folder?
Anyone know if this can be done (remove a directory in trash)? I've tried going into Terminal and using rmdir and dragging the folder I want deleted to Terminal, but it says the folder is not empty, and doesn't delete it. Using rm and dragging deletes other than folders, but how to do this for folders escapes me (unless I go and delete all the contents, which would be a PITA).
I had some folders on an external HDD that I moved to the trash and then I moved around the folders on my external HDD and renamed some. Now the items that I moved to the Trash won't delete! They no longer have their normals icons and instead have the plain white piece of paper icon.
It seems the Trash can't delete them because it can't find the file's original file path. The items only reappear in my Trash when I connect the HDD but it's still really annoying.
I'm running Lion V10.7.2 on my iMac and I'd like to modify trash.I'll like Trash to stop asking me if I'm sure I want to remove the contents of trash. Yes, I do and I don't want to have to click twice, I'm a big boy. You'd think you were running 'Windows'.Any way I can stop the O/S from asking me if I'm sure.
Went to empty my trash folder and found that there are thousands of items to be removed contained in 43 folders. On clicking empty trash a new box came up and a blue blinking bar went across identifying the empty process. But the items still remain in trash. Is this a virus attack or similar? Mac OS X 10.6.8.
I have two folders in my trash which I cannot empty. No matter how many times I try these folders will not go away. I have open the "info" link and marked them read and write without success.
I tried to remove user. The operation crashed. I later deleted the user directories while signed on as another user. Now the original user files are stuck in the trash and I can't delete them. Can't even reset permissions. What should I do to remove them?
How do I remove locked items from trash? I want to delete unneeded (duplicate) backup files that were on an external disk. I have not succeeded using empty trash or secure empty trash. I am the administrator. Mac OS X (10.9.3) Mavericks.
I was trying to delete one album from itunes, so i quickly ctrl A, delete, move files to trash, enter, then all of a sudden I realize my entire library was highlighted and deleting to my trash can! so now I have a trash can full of music and I can't figure out how to get it all back to itunes music folder or even out of the can! ahh plz help!I guess I can drag Items from the trash to my desktop, but I need to bring back like 9000 things from the trash which all deleted individually so dragging them all to my desktop doesnt sound like a good idea. EEP.
Despite having several files in the trash, its icon never changes (always shows an empty trash) and the "Empty Trash" option is dimmed (that is, cannot be used). OnyX ws the only solution but it's temporary. What's the fix I should apply to Mac OS X? Also, why is it that every time I want to move a file to trash I must enter my password? It's annoying to say the least. Please help me as I don't want to go through the royal pains of installing everything again, Windows-style. I think Mac OS X should be better than that.

I accidentally put the Mac folder (forget what it is called, basically the OS) into the trash, and now when I boot it it just goes to a grey screen and says weird things. Even when I put in the Mac OS X install disc and hold "c".
I have tried everything and I cannot delete this folder from my trash. It's an empty folder because everything inside it is already deleted. I get this message when I try to empty trash.
"The operation cannot be completed because the item "xxx" is in use."
I have tried going into Terminal and typing "sudo rm -rf" etc etc. Get the message "directory not empty".
Tried secure empty trash.
Tried using Cocktail.
Tried using Permanent Eraser.
Tried holding down "option" and emptying.
Tried logging out, logging in then emptying. Tried restarting and emptying.
Nothing seems to work. I've looked through every thread on every forum I could find on google. I can move the folder back to my desktop. I can rename it. It's not locked or anything. Also, I tried emptying it in safe mode, but I can't seem to start up on safe mode!!! I turn off the computer, turn it on, hold down shift after I hear the startup noise, release shift when the grey apple logo comes up, and then it just shuts down on me. I can't boot up on safe mode!! It's so weird!
I'm gonna try repairing disk permissions, but before I do.
I'm on a PowerBook G4. Running Version 10.4.11. Everything is up to date.

I accidentally deleted my applications folder and pressed "Empty Trash" And now I'm getting a new computer from my school, and their doing something with this one. Will they just insert a CD and redo everything for another student and reinstall everything?
So, while cleaning up my macbook pro from old files, I mistakenly get into the NO NAME partition that appears in the OS X partition, but which holds some kind of Windows XP directories. I don't know how I managed to do so, but I somehow deleted a folder under NO NAME/Documents and Settings/[user name] and all the files in that directory.
Not much harm was done, since it seems as though the folder was merely duplicated into the trash and still remains in its original directory in NO NAME. The problem is that every time I try to delete it from the trash it says I don't have permissions. It's only folders and they're all unlocked and I am logged on as admin. I've tried dragging the folder out of the trash but it merely duplicates it (although I have no issues deleting the duplicate). So I have folders that have no use being in or outside the trash, which are proving to be very difficult to delete. I tried verifying my disk fwith Disk Utility, but it resulted ok.
Sometimes items it put in the trash don't appear in the trash, although they are there. This often happens when I manually delete podcasts from iTunes, or drag an item such as a PDF from my downloads folder to the trash. The dock icon remains in it's "empty" state and bring up the trash finder window also shows that it is empty. If I restart my MacBook however, the items appear in the trash and are able to be deleted.
I went through and deleted a lot of stuff then when I was emptying the trash it said that there was a locked file so I found out were it was pulled it out and then got rid of everything else there are about 720 locked files in the folder then I tried to find a quicker way to delete it then I found out how to unlock them so I went to pull them out but it just made a copy of it so now and I put it back in the trash not thinking about how that just adds on to the files so how can I get them out or make it so I can press continue just once for them all to go away.
