OS X V10.7 Lion :: Why Doesn't Time Machine See Entire Hard Drive
May 27, 2012
I have a 500 GB external drive that uses FireWire. Recently Time Machine started deleting several backups to make room for new ones. It now says the oldest backup is May 4th, 2012. I thought this sounded like a problem. When I looked into the details, my iMac now thinks my hard drive has 400GB instead of 500GB.Â

Every time I back up to my external drive Time Machine automatically backs up the whole hard drive which is very time consuming. This happens every time I back up. It's supposed to only add new files, not do the whole thing. Haven't changed user name or any of the things mentioned in other discussions that will cause this. Does some setting need to be changed?

I have a 2 TB western digital hard drive connected via USB to my airport extreme (Y2012) that i've been using the past 2 years to connect to wirelessly. The hard drive has 2 partitions, ~1 TB each. 1 partition for backing up, the other for storing media. Recently I deleted my macbook pro backup. My macbook pro has a 500GB hard drive, of which about 120 GB is free.Â
Since I deleted the old time machine backup disk image and told time machine to start a new backup, I am now receiving an error. It's telling me there isn't enough room on the drive, when the 1TB partition i'm trying to use (as i've sucessfully done in the past) has nothing on it. 1 full TB free, and my macbook pro can't backup a 500 GB hard drive, which isn't even full itself.Â
I have a macbook pro early 2011, and I never know when the board is going to go koput again and I don't currently have a backup of my stuff while this problem persists.Â

I have just purchased a Toshiba Stor.E Slim hard drive, which I do not require for Time Machine back ups. Should I use the Tuxera NTFS driver, or should I format the hard drive for Mac? Is any benefit over formatting vs using the driver? I pretty much use Macs all the time, but there may be rare occasions when it would be useful to hook up to a PC.

I've just replaced an old MacBook Pro with a new one and used Time Machine to get the new MBP set up. All is well and it looks like my new computer is a mirror of the old (tested for a week now). If I turn on Time Machine with the new MBP using the same hardrive as the former, will the files remain and be accessible? Presently, I can only access the old files by going into the hard drive through Finder and even then, most are locked.Â

Time Machine is not working correctly since installing Lion. I found (from using Adobe Bridge) that there seem to be automatic back ups being made 20 times a day and onto my hard drive! Usually I back up to an external drive specifically for back up using Time Machine. Now time machine takes several hours to back up when I have that disk wired in (with USB) and the Time Machine icon in the Apple menu is always showing that the back up is delayed. Â

I used my external hard drive to store important documents off of my previous Mac. None of these documents are on my new Mac. Will I lose these docs if Time Machine backs up to this external hard drive? Will Time Machine save over those docs?

I am trying to get Time Machine to backup my external hard drive. I have the external drive formated as Mac OS Extended (journaled) and I have also removed the drive from the Excluded list.I put some 'test' files on the external drive and told TM to do a backup and when it is finished the only way I can see my external hard drive in TM is if it is connected to the computer. It doesn't seem to be backed up anywhere in TM that I can see.

I noticed that Time Machine backs up the system ever so often. What happens if I disconnect the external hard drive I'm using as the back up and Time Machine tries to initiate a back up? Will it corrupt anything?

I backed up my iMac desktop at work onto an external hard drive. I can see the files, but they are all locked. When I go to open, I receive the following message "The folder (whatever the name is) can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents." I understand that the system I want to transfer to is different, but is there -- shouldn't there be an override asking for the password.Â
Since I am the administrator to both systems, I would hope I could see the documents that I created.Â

Since the harddrive of my IMac was full, I added an external harddrive to the system for my photos. I use another external harddrive for time machine back-ups (backing up both the IMac and external harddrive with my iPhoto libraries). Recently the EHD with my photo libraries crashed. I now want to restore it from time machine onto a new external harddrive, but am not quite sure how to do this.

I am backing up my data from my mac book pro for a second time. I plug in my external, and it says it doesn't have enough memory to back up my computer. I have 1 TB hard drive and used about 650 MB for the first back-up. Obviously I don't have enough to back up everything for a second time. I just want to back up the new stuff. When I go to exclude the current external from the new back up, it's grayed out. Do I have to delete the contents of the hard drive and re-back up the entire computer?

I was trying to set up my Time Machine to an external hard drive. I didn't continue because it asked to "initialize" the hard drive which I had a lot of important things on.
I have another external hard drive I'd like to use but, my Time Machine has this error code of -43. What is this and how can I use my Time Machine on another external hard drive?

Is there a way to make a backup of your Time Machine backup on a 2nd hard drive? I want to be doubly sure that my data is backed up!Right now I get an error saying that the second hard drive isn't authorized to copy my Time Machine data from the original hard drive I have set up as my Time Machine.

I excluded folders in options in the Time Machine system preferences and told me that the calculated backup is about 30 GB. Nevertheless, when the time machine starts is counts about 300GB. Therefore it is not excluding the marked folders.Â

Recently I bought 2 identical WD Scorpio Blue 1TB hard drives for my macbook pro 13 inch 2010. My aim is to replace the internal hard drive with one of the two I just purchased and use it as my system drive with Lion, Windows and Data partitions. And for the other hard drive I want to use it as a full disk back up for the internal drive (now 1TB hard drive). After I was done with setting up both windows and mac and data transfer, when I booedt into the recovery partition from the internal drive to clone the drive to the external drive, the disk utility gave me this error (Could not validate source - error 254). I also tried using Carbon Copy Cloner but it only could clone partitions, not the entire drive. Yesterday I downloaded a copy of Clonezilla. It worked fine until it had to clone an exFAT partition (my data partition). The exFAT partition appeared as 'RAW' partition in clonezilla. As a result, the whole partition appeared to be full and clonezilla had to copy every single blocks of data in that partition and the estimated time remaining was about 30 hours. So clonezilla is out too. Just want to ask if there is any program/application (bootable or not) which allows can do a full disk clone to an external hard drive.

I received my WD My Book Studio 750gb hard drive yesterday. I updated the firmware, and connected it to my MacBook. Everything seemed to go fine with the first backup, but I have a question regarding the space Time Machine is showing as available. The hdd is 750gb, and shows 698gb available, which I understand. However, Time Machine only shows like 500gb as usable, so why doesn't Time Machine use the entire 698gb? I did do the erase via the utilities, thinking maybe it came with some stuff preinstalled. Does Time Machine keep some of the space on the hdd held back for something? Or do I need to do something else to the drive to make it all available? Not really a big deal, as I only have about 59gb filled on my MacBook anyways, just kind of wondering.

Basically I have a 750GB hard drive in my Macbook Pro and over 300GB is taken up with 'BackUp' data. This is more than the total of everything I have on the drive other than that. Time Machine has always been setup on an external drive and when searching all files on the Macbook there is nothing for backup files so don't know where it is coming from.

I'm moving from a MacBook Pro running 10.6.8 to a MBP running 10.7.5. I thought this would be pretty simple ... just attach my Snow Leopard Time Machine external drive to the Lion MBP and run Migration Assistant.Â
But when I go through the MA steps, MA does not see my TM drive. I've made sure I have the latest upgrades and have run Disk Utility's First Aid on the TM drive.Â
Ideas? I know I can try MA with other interfaces but using TM allows me to work on my old computer until my new one is ready.Â
The TM drive is a 500GB Iomega eGo drive.Â

I've just bought the new Airport Extreme Base Station last night. I set up everything just fine. I've set up an external HD to the USB port and got it to work fine so far in terms of file sharing and reading and writing. I also have a dedicated Time Machine external HD attached to my MBP USB drive.Does Time Machine backup shared airport drives? This is a deal breaker for me. When I go into time machine after my latest backup, the shared airport drive doesn't show up .Am I missing something? Can time machine back up anything connected to the AEBS?

It has taken a while to pinpoint why my system has been so flaky lately. I've been having issues where my entire system would slow down and if I try to reboot, it would just hang requiring a force shutdown. Further, at times even clicking on the dock would hang the dock and issuing a killall Dock command would not restore it. I even performed an erase and install on my system and started from scratch only to find that the issue persists. After some investigative work I've found that the issue is related to time machine. The only time the system experiences this behavior is when time machine is performing a backup. It sits at "Preparing..." indefinitely. I am backing up to an AirPort disk along with two other computers, which don't experience any issues. I have also tried deleting the sparsebundle and starting with a fresh backup, however the problem reappears in a few days.
This repeats forever. Stopping the backup will not work. The only solution to get my system back is a force shutdown. This issue is very frustrating. I'm hoping someone knows what is wrong or can lead me in the right direction.
P.S. I've disabled Time Machine for now and the system is running flawless.

I've got my external hard drive set up with Time Machine on my 13" MBP w/ Snow Leopard and I need to upgrade the laptop already for my school courses (awesome ). When I get my new MBP, is it possible to plug in the hard drive with my previous backups and migrate everything to the new Mac? Will it appear as if my computer has just grown in size overnight, or do I need to manually transfer everything over?
The hard drive is USB, I read somewhere about transferring all the files via Firewire but not USB, I'm guessing that's because of the backwards control you have with Firewire. (Not to mention slightly faster data rate).

My time machine backup isnt working for the last few months. The backup is located on a QNAP TS-670. Â
I can look for the TM and the iMac see the TM, but if I start the backup, a popup comes up. "The image of the backup-volume "/Volume/TMBackup/Danielas iMac.sparsebundle" cant be accessed. (Error -1)
Maybe it is not the exact error message in english, but I hope you know what I mean. Im working on a german system.Â
I can access the TM-Share through the finder (share: afp://[...]).Â
