OS X V10.7 Lion :: What Is Best Application For Adding Metadata
Jun 29, 2012
Is there any software application that is available that will allow me to add metadata to mp4 files? For images I use Adobe Bridge, however it will not embed metadata into mp4 files.I am looking to also add keywords.

Is there an app (preferably free) that will automatically add cover art and metadata like artist and album name by song title? I've got a bunch of music that has only the song title, but is not categorized by anything. I remember seeing something like this before, but can't remember what it was. Is there anything that can do this?

I'd like to add more then 10 items to my recent application stack list - any terminal script that can implement this - ideally I'd like 20 items in the list. To avoid confusion the screenshot is the stack list I am referring to.

If you open Spotlight using Ctrl+F, you get an interface for advanced queries. Under "Kind", you can select "Other..." and Spotlight opens a list of "search attributes". It's a long list but of course not complete. Question: is there a way to add custom metadata attributes that can be read by Spotlight? I am willing to get my hands dirty with plists and such, or perhaps there is some freeware add-on that can facilitate this?Â
1. I can create a new search attribute for OS X files -- let's call it "foo".Â
2. I can attach the value "bar" to the metadata attribute "foo", e.g. for the file "myFile.txt".Â
3. I can write an AppleScript that takes a file name as a parameter and returns the value of the "foo" attribute. I.e., I give it "myFile.txt" and I get "bar" as the result.Â
4. I can use spotlight to search for "bar" and get all files with this metadata.Â
5. (Optional) I can use spotlight to search for "foo:bar" and get "myFile.txt".Â
I have looked at a bunch of things on the Net (OpenMeta, SpotMeta, etc.) but I haven't found anything yet that will do this.Â

I just bought a early 2009 MAC Pro and it came with 3GB of RAM, I ordered 3 2GB sticks of memory to replace the 3 1GB sticks that I had in there from Kingston. I turned off the unit, I popped the little levers and pulled the memory out of slot 1, 2, 3 and then replaced the memory with the new Kingston in slot 1, 2, 3
One of the sticks in is not working at all and I get the RED LED light no matter what slot I move that chip to. So I am running on 2 of the new Kingston memory chips.
Can I mix the memory and add the 1GB into slot 3 and 4 with slot 1 and 2 full of 2GB chips?
Also how to I run the memory utility again? I went to /system/Library/CoreServices/ and then I see the program Memory Slot Utility.app
How do I run this? I'm used to no spaces and I type ./then program name

So, I ripped my DVD's of Battlestar Galactica to iTunes. I select them all and get info and change metadata. All of them change except for one file, that refuses to change. in this case, the album artwork won't change from the first frame of the video to the DVD case picture from Amazon.
I did them all at the same time and all in handbrake, but this one file just won't accept the change. I've checked the file permissions and it seems to be set correctly.
I have another ripped CD that no matter what I do, none of the songs will accept changes to their metadata.
Anyone seen this? Solutions? I tried deleting it from itunes and re-adding it but still no joy. At a loss?!

I'am having a difficult time managing TV Show metadata in iTunes. I have over 100 episodes of a single show. I selected all of the episodes and went to "get info" and set the show's name. That was easy enough, but the problem is numbering the episodes in iTunes. I have to go one by one. I guess there is no auto numbering. Is there any easier way?

So I re-ripped some episodes that I now need to re-tag. I have lower quality files already tagged, but alas, I've scoured the internet and haven't come up with any resources to automate this. I can use Lostify to "lock" the fields but still have to manually enter the title, episode ID and such, and copy and paste the description.
In my dreams, I envision an application with two drop-zones that would duplicate the metadata from one file to another. I do this sort of thing often enough to really need it. I've looked at the command-line tools for Atomic Parsley and MP4Tags (which is awesome and if built from source can now successfully edit the CNID and HD tags resulting in the dual-format HD-SD files you see on iTunes) but have no "copy" function.

It used to be (back in the day) that when I downloaded a file the originating URL would get added automatically into the Get Info window. That was extremely handy and painless - no copy/pasting needed!
These days I'm running Snow Leopard and I notice that, not only isn't this info added automatically, there isn't even a PLACE for it in the Get Info window anymore. How can I get this functionality back so that I can return to a file's originating URL somewhere down the line if the need arises?

I have a new Mac Mini with Lion installed.
Airport Extreme
Laptop - Mac Book Pro w/ Lion, also uses network - not having any issues
iPad 1, using network, no issues.
Last week it suddenly started incrementing the computer name on the network: myName Mini (2), MyName Mini (3),...This causes issues with banking software because it assumes it is a new computer each time and makes me register the new computer each time.

Having some issues with annoying Metadata in some AVI files. I just want to remove the title (as in what shows up in the VLC window when you have title info AND the file name) and the comments.
When I tried Metadata Hooteneany, it converted them all to .mov, I guess, so when I tried to reopen them, not only was the metadata still there, but there was no audio.
When I used VLC to "Window">"Media Information..." and delete the metadata and "Save Metadata"'d, it did nothing when I reopened the file. Metadata was still there.

I have snow leopard (w/ all the most recent updates installed). And for some reason when I select "Get Info" from the Finder, the information pane opens but the section labeled "More info" contains only the most basic info about the relevant file. For example- PNG & JPEG files don't even display the image size (WxH).
I looked at a friends computer, running the same version of Snow Leopard, and when I go to Get Info it displays lots of relevant metadata, even for PSD, DNG and other file types. Can someone please tell me how to turn on the extended metadata support for Get Info (inspector)?

We have a Windows 2003 server on which we have a large archive of photos. The few of us that need to access this archive are on Macs, all running version 10.5.6. I know that on a Mac, when we search files located on our machines, it searches the metadata or keywords in the jpeg files. However, when I search the windows server, it doesn't look at that info. Is there any way to change that? Anything that can be done to either the macs or the windows server? I also noticed that when I have a file selected that is located my mac and hit "Get Info" I am able to see all that metadata under the "More Info" section. However when that same file is sitting on the windows server, "Get Info" doesn't show me anything.

Why is iTunes automatically changing my genre metadata? For the past couple months I’ve noticed that iTunes has been changing genre information in my music library. This is a problem because I’ve spent the past decade tweaking the metadata in my iTunes Library to be exactly the way that I want it (particularly with genre and grouping information). Â
I have a very large iTunes library and I’ve changed genre and grouping info for organizational reasons. When iTunes changes the genre of my music, it’s effecting my smart playlists and causing a domino effect of mis-organization. Tracks and albums are popping up in multiple genres, and things are getting disorganized very quickly.Â
I suspect that iTunes is changing the genre info of my purchased music back to how it appears in the iTunes store and that this is going to be a new ongoing Apple issue that is quietly ignored.Â
Other notes/observations:
-I am NOT using iTunes Match
-Genius is turned OFF
-Tracks being automatically edited is music that has been purchased from the iTunes Store
-Not all tracks purchased from the iTunes Store is being automatically edited
-If I Command-Info a track that has been edited by iTunes, the metadata changes back to what I had changed it to. But ONLY when I Command-Info or play the track. Otherwise the track stays lost in it’s reversed genre and the track disappears from smart playlists that it’s included in.

I am wanting to add a new user group with an ID of 1000, and move my main account into that group, then update everything that has the old GID with the new one. This is so that I can share files easier with another UNIX system I use without having to tweak the permissions for each file. I've done quite a bit of searching in the past couple days, but all I can seem to come up with are old, outdated instructions that don't work on OS X anymore.Â

On my Mac Mini, I have set up a new user because of problems with the OS. So far, it is working fine. I also have a G5 running OS 10.4.11. There is an account on both machines with the same name. However, the new account on the Mini is a different name. The G5 does not offer the "login as" (at least that I can see, so my access to the new account on the Mini is limited to a dropbox. To simplify: A is the account on both the Mini and the G5, B is the account only on the Mini. I tried extending the permissions on B's home directory, but that did not work. Using get info, I unlocked the file then tried to add A to the list of users. For some reason, nothing happened.Â
How can I give user A permission to access user B's home directory on the Mini?

I use the Date Added column all the time in my iTunes, so I can see what was added last. Well, I just noticed that most of the 10,000 songs in my library have at some point lost the original 'date added' they used to have. Now, the earliest date is sometime in February of 2010. And some have been set to just a few days ago. How did this happen? Is this a bug of iTunes 10? I only just noticed this, so I'm not sure when it happened.

My question is how to handle the difference in creation date between the paper document and the scanned file. The paper files are from the past 50 years, but of course the file creation date of the scans is the date of the scan. How can I reconcile this? Ideally I would like to make the scan metadata creation date of the PDF/A the same as that of the original paper file creation date.
