OS X V10.7 Lion :: How To Prevent Apps From Being Copied To External Drive
May 23, 2012
I run a studio in an education evironment. We've got quite a lot of software installed on our machines (Mac OS X 10.7.4) and there's always the chance that students will copy applications from the Applications folder onto an external drive to take home! Obviously this is becoming increasingly easy with large USB sticks and Applications which are entirely contained in the Applications folder. Is there any way that students can still run these applications during class but prevent them from copying the whole applications?

I copied some file from one external drive to another and the folders doesn't show an arrow which I could click to show the contents of the folder. When I do get info it doesn't show the size of the folder but the hard drive that I copied from does. How do you make it show the arrow and size?

I have a MacBook Pro 2,66 GHz with his native Matshita dvd-r uj-868 Cd/Dvd RW burner and I use both Logic Express 8 and Cubase 6 to arrange my musical pieces. Once I did all the audio bounces, how can I do to prevent the final Master CD being copied?

When I launch an app or open a window they appear next to the Dock wasting precious screen space. I can of course move them manually under the Dock to get the space back but I'm searching a way to tell the dock to always be on top of everything instead of moving it away.
I already searched Google and used numerous Apps like "Docker" and "Secrets"- without sucess.
Especially on my mothers small 17incher with 1024x768px resolution and only a couple of things in the Dock, the Dock is stealing like 20 Percent of real estate.

I understand why "Open With" includes both old and new versions of updated apps. Fine. But how do I CLEAR the list and prevent this from continuing? (I'd expect it to offer a "Clear List" option at the bottom. It doesn't.)

I moved my iTunes library to an external drive, but now my apps are gone? I do have iTunes match and iCloud, so my songs are all on the cloud, but none of my apps are showing... I copied everything over, consolidated, but I must have messed something up as I think I have too many library files on the external drive now. I can see all my files on the external drive, but they are not showing up when I open itunes. It looks like it linked to a new copy of a library as only my most recent apps are showing, nad none of my existing ones are on itunes. What should I do to fix this? How do I know which files to delete?Â

I've had this very, very strange issue occurring over the past few days now where recently created files go missing or updated files revert back to earlier versions. It happens when I disconnect from my Time Machine external LaCie drive after backup. Even apps went missing and I had to reinstall them. It's like my machine is automatically reverted to two days earlier when I disconnect the external drive. When it started:
The first time I experienced the problem was *after* I added my Macintosh HD (internal) drive as an exclusion to the Spotlight list of excluded drives/folders. I did this because my Mail app would not allow me to select "Entire Message" when searching mail folders. A popular thread told me that if I added and then removed my (internal) hard drive to/from Spotlight, that it would re-index it, thereby finding the mail files again allowing me to search the message bodies. That's when the files and apps disappeared and/or reverted to previous versions. Again, the files reappear after I plug into the external Time Machine (LaCie) drive. But when I disconnect - they're gone! Other preferences have disappeared too - I've been prompted to re-enter serial #s I entered days prior for new software I added.
Machine: New MacBook Pro
OS X: Version 10.5.6
External Drive: LaCie 1TB

I recently replaced my stock HDD (500GB) with a 750GB. I went into the recovery partition, and did a disk copy. I figured cloning the disk would be the best way to do things. When it was done, I rebooted, and booted from the new drive (which was in an external enclosure). It was a little slow, but I didn't think anything of it. I opened up the case for my MBP and switched the drives. When I booted up after switching them, the boot-up process was very slow, and when OSX finally booted, everything was very slow (lagging) and unresponsive. I kept getting the "Grey Screen of Death" telling me to force shut-down my laptop. I have switched the drives back, and everything is working fine now, but I'm curious as to what may be causing the new drive not to work properly. Has this happened to others? Have I missed a step or 10?Should I maybe have used Carbon Copy Cloner instead of Mac's built-in disk copy?Â

OSX has a rather annoying feature, on many commands it will spin up my external harddrive out of its sleep mode. I have to wait for the harddrive to get up to speed and during that wait i get the spinning beach ball. Its really annoying because it will do that on things totally unrelated to the external like bookmarking a webpage, going into a new tab in safari, switching between programs.
What i would like to to make it so that the external harddrive is only spun up when its actually being used! I dont want to have it going all the time because i value the quietness of my mac, at the moment its pretty much silent apart from when the external harddrive is going or the fans are going flatout. My TM backup files are getting unnecessarily large so I would like to delete them and rescan my computer again. However, I don't want to risk deleting my TM backups and have the computer fail, so I wanted to copy the backups temporarily to a spare disk until the new backup had been completed successfully. So can the TM backups be moved just like any other file?

My Snow Leopard boot disk had 12 years of accumulated crud, and was running slowly. So I did a nice clean install of Lion on a fresh partition.Redid some configuring, like sudoers, Flash, Time machine interval to 4 hours, locate.updatedb, etc. Wanted my old "Location" info (about a dozin networks).Gave Migration assistant a try. Unchecked EVERYTHING except Network Settings: Perfect.Only 24 KB. Probably just a couple of .plist files. What could go wrong? I'm running from a non-admin account. It copied all the Users. It copied all the Applications. It copied all the root level cruft. My pristine boot drive is burried deeper in crap that the American Constitution. My backup is a day old, and I worked all day. Another half a day to undo this mess. Next time I will find the config file and copy it myself. But why did it do this?

I have this wierd thing going on - when I copy pictures (jgp) from my MacBook to my standalone NAS (samba share based) - they are not visible from within Finder. I have to manually open a terminal and do a "ls" to see that they are there. Â
This only happens with copying Mac->NAS, and not with PC->NAS. In fact, if I copy the folder with all the hidden .jpgs over to my PC, I can even see them there. It just says it contains 234 pictures when I bring up the folder properties.
Anyone know whats causing this, or what I can do to failsearch? Â

Then I have to close both of them. This gets annoying when editing several docs. Is there any way to turn off the new doc? I don't see that option in the menu or preferences.

It was flaky after the upgraded to 13.0.0 but resolved that with flushed caches, disk utilities, rebuilding the launch services etc, and I could still access it using Chrome.Having upgraded to 13.0.1 it is not responding to treatment. Have uninstalled Firefox completely - including all leftover files - and reinstalled: still nothing. It's running happily on Chrome under 10.6.8 so I know it's not a connectivity issue through the router.Obviiusly not the app, not the connection, only common areas are the computer itself, which seems to be running happily enough, and maybe something in OSX that has been affected?
