OS X :: Disk Utility Showing Low Free Space

Jan 6, 2009

I am using a Mac Mini, Which is having a capacity of 74.2 GB. Hardly I made use of 15 or 16 GB of that. As I felt some slowness, I tried running "Disk Utility". Recently I found that the free space is only 2.4GB, instead of around 55GB..

Disk Utility is showing
USED SPACE :71.8GB

If i am calculating all folders in "Machintosh HD" (Application, Library,System, etc..), it wil come around 14-15 GB only.

Applications :: No Disk Space After Failed Disk Utility Erase Free Space?

Dec 15, 2010

I'm having a pretty serious problem. I attempted to erase the free space on my HD, as I do from time to time, except this time it appeared to hang/freeze at the end, when it gets to the part where it creates a temporary file. I waited for several minutes and it didn't move. I tried clicking the skip button, but that did nothing either, so I force quit Disk Utility.

The problem is, it left the disk at "Zero KB" of free space, effectively making my computer inoperable. I was in the process of studying for a huge exam tomorrow, and am currently flipping out.

If it matters, I'm on a Macbook Pro 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo, running 10.4.

I really don't want to have to reinstall the OS and import the old files, but my real fear is that I will have to do a fresh install of the OS.

Mac Pro :: Using Disk Utility Erase Free Space?

Feb 10, 2009

i was Erasing Free Space in Disk Utility, after a while I needed to Force Quit another program but I mistakenly quit Disk Utility and now it says I only have 3.1 GB space available when it should be around 270 GB available. I'm sure Disk Utility said it was 'Creating Temporary File' at this time this happened.

I'm now also getting a message which states I need to clear out space on my start up disk.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Disk Not Showing Free Space

Apr 21, 2012

I just cleaned out my HDD on my 2008 MBP and am still getting about the same amount of available space as I did when I started. I must have cleaned anywhere from 50-150GB of stuff from the hard drive and no space has been freed up. I ran a scan with my trusty Daisydick which has never let me down and it showd what I thought to be a very much more accurate amout of free space now but the system says otherise as dones another scanner. Also I cant seem to figure out for the life of me what this extra 99GB of "other" space is. Below is a link to the screenshot I took. I really try to keep things very light and tidy on here.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Disk Utility Shows Incorrect Free Space

Jun 11, 2012

The Finder window shows that I have 302GB of harddrive space remaining, out of 500GB. The Activity Monitor and Disk Utility show I have 240GB space remaining, and my System Profiler shows I have 239GB remaining. I just deleted a bunch of old TV shows off of iTunes (about 40GB worth) to open up some space, but only the Finder changed (up to 302GB from 260GB) but the Activity Monitor, Disk Utility, and System Profiler haven't changed.

Now, I'll assume the Finder is showing the correct amount of space, but I'm wondering why the other utilites are showing the incorrent amount of space. I have a feeling maybe something was screwed up when I created a 50GB Windows 7 partition through Boot Camp a couple months ago.

I've attempted to Repair Disk through the Disk Utility and it says everything looks fine. Any solutions to this minor inconvenience? Or at least an answer as to why this is happening?

Applications :: Utility To Wipe Free Space On Macbook

I'm fairly new into my mac. Today I have been searching for a utility to wipe free space on my macbook. I'm looking for something open source/freeware. When I was using Windoze I used Eraser by Heide. I can't find a thing out there. Oh, and I've done a search here in the forums and after looking through multiple pages I haven't found anything that meets my needs. Sorry. I'm pretty frustrated. And pardon my ignorance in all things Mac.

MacBook Pro :: Folder With Question Mark At Startup - Disk 0 Showing In Disk Utility

Jun 24, 2014

I get this question mark along with a folder when starting up. I tried holding down the option key when turning on the power and then I get an internet recovery along with a globe. I click on the arrow below it and it takes maybe 15 minutes to start up. Then i get this disk utilities screen. I'm now unable to do anything. When going into disk utility, disk 0 shows with Mac OS X base system underneath it. All the clickable buttons are faded out. Is there something wrong with the hardrive? and where could i get this fixed? There isn't a warranty on it.

OS X :: External Hard Drive Showing Inaccurate Free Space

Jul 18, 2010

I have a 1TB external LaCie hard drive. Presently, it is loaded with about 300GBs of space so I should have around 650GBs left. However, it is only showing about 240GBs left. I think the problem is that I used to use this hard drive for Time Machine backups, I deleted them via the recycle bin. I checked the recycle bin, nothing there. I verified the disk, everything ok, I repaired it as well. I even erased the empty space.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: 166Gb Of Free Space Not Showing In Finder

Jun 6, 2012

my Mac started saying I need to free up space on my Startup Disk. I was suprised, but as I've been doing some film work, I just thought it must take up even more space than I thought. Anway, I free'd up loads of spaced, I moved all my film files to an external disk, deleted them from where they were, and emptied the trash. I've got rid of other things like Internet cache and downloads, basically, I know i have space now. However, my Mac insists on saying I only have about 2Gb free. On another site, someone recommended something called Disk Inventory X, which gives a visual picture of what files etc are taking up space on the Mac. I ran this, and low and behold I have 166Gb free. The screen shot below shows the big blue square of free space. If you can zoom in, it shows this as something outside of the home 'Tiger' thing, under Users - .tiger, as though its partitioned or something?! I don't really understand how Mac's work under the hood of pretty buttons etc, so I'm a bit stuck now.

why my Mac can't see or let me use all this free space?

I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. It is a 13" mid 2009 MacBook Pro 5.5, 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4Gb 1067 MHz DDR3 if that's of any help.

OS X :: External Hdd Not Showing Up Even In Disk Utility?

Aug 15, 2009

I've been having trouble with my Western Digital 160GB HD, its one of the MyPassport ones or what not. It used to work like a charm and had for a while but a couple of days ago it just stopped being able to be read or even recognized on Macs. I tried this laptop and another macbook pro and both would not show the HD on the desktop or even Disk Utility. When I open the Disk Utility when the ExHD is plugged in, I just get that loading circle and it will just do that indefinitely. Same thing with System Profiler as well.

I don't believe I damaged it in anyway, I hear no clicking and it seems to "boot" smoothly when it's plugged in, so would this mean its a corruption issue? I have been plugging this in to different Macs recently, (3 total) and one of which runs Leopard while the other two run Tiger. Would that cause the issue? (the reason I ask is that this all started after I had plugged it into the different OS.) I haven't tried to plug it into a PC yet, i'm going to do that today but I had tried doing the CMD + Option+ P + R reset till the second beep and I also did a hard reset by unplugging everything and waiting a bit then holding the start button down until it beeps.

OS X :: Cleaning Up Your Mac To Free Up Disk Space?

Sep 27, 2010

Anyone know if it's possible to clean up downloaded updates from programs on Snow Leopard?

When Adobe downloads updates for Photoshop or Acrobat for instance...after the update get's installed does the file get deleted or it stays somewhere on the system.

Same goes for Mac OSX updates...do they leave a copy of say an Itunes update on the system after it updates it...or does it get automatically deleted from the system.

I'd like to clean out any useless downloads that just sit there taking up space after they have updated the Apps on my Mac.

So does anyone know where to find these downloaded updates and if it's possible to remove them without any issues?

MacBook Pro :: OS X 10.6.8 - No Free Disk Space

Jun 21, 2014

Version: 10.6.8
Capacity: 11.5 GB
Model: Macbook Pro 13" from June 2009

I recently have been having issues with my computer and had to get a new hard drive. I installed it myself after purchasing from crucial.com. The order says I got a 500GB Momentus (I know it is not an SSD). I had to get my computer completely wiped of its memory when they were going through the initial problems at the Genius Bar. This means I should have a ton of free space to my knowledge.

When I look at my Macintosh HD info it says that I have 0 KB of available space. When I try to download anything (like Adobe Flash Player) it says that I have no available free disk space. I believe I should have a lot of free space. I am thinking I may have done something wrong while installing the hard drive, but I followed a tutorial and it seemed simple.

MacBook Pro :: How To Free Up Disk Space

how to free up disk space.  I have a 250GB MacBook Pro-2013.  I have a 2TB Time Machine back-up hard drive.  Photos take up 50GB, videos 60GB, music 30GB.  My Time Machine backs up my computer each time it is plugged into an adapter and on my home network. Should I move all my photos and videos  of family to the cloud?  Do I need another external hard drive to store photos, videos and music on?  I have emptied trash, deleted unused apps, deleted old documents and deleted old iMessages.

Hardware :: New Internal HD Not Showing In Disk Utility

Jun 24, 2008

I just replaced the internal hard drive on my G4 iBook. My problem is the drive is not showing up in Disk Utility, the system install disk, or when I have the iBook in target mode and connected to my tower. I believe the old drive had died. When I ran the Hardware Test on it, I received an error code on Mass Storage. After installing the new drive and running the Hardware Test, the Mass Storage passed. I take that as a good sign.?

Before cracking the iBook back open, I was wanting to find out what all the problem may be and what things to check while I have it open since that is not that quick of an operation. I'm already assuming to check the connections on the drive. But if they weren't secure, would it still pass the Hardware Test?

OS X :: Free Up Local Disk Space On MacBook?

Aug 1, 2007

OK, so I am completely new to mac. The last time I used a mac computer was when my family had one around 1994/1995. So, I don't know how to do completely basic things like this.

I got my macbook on Saturday, less than a week ago. Last night I bought the Sims 2 at the apple store and I asked the guy if it would run good on it. He went through all of the requirements and said that my computer surpassed all of them.

So I go to run it and it won't run and says I need to free up local disk space. Basically I'm wicked pissed right now and am worrying that something is wrong with my computer or he was lying and I can't return it. How do I free this up? Is it a big deal that I need to do this after having the computer for less than 5 days? This is the only big program I've installed so far. I've only installed basic stuff like office and my printer so I don't know how it could be out of space already.
