Dec 28, 2009I have an external hard drive which I used before with my windows-based laptop. If connected to my IMac I noticed that the files can not be deleted or even renamed. It's NTFS formatted drive. What should I do to allow these options/actions on this external drive with my IMac.

Jun 10, 2012I had downloaded some files to add to an external hard drive, the hard drive was assigned to a pc before adding these files so it wouldn't let me add files from my MacBook..
Had a look around online and made some changes (well thats what I thought) and I was able to transfer files form my MacBook onto the external hard drive.
What I then figured out was that there was nothing left on the hard drive except for the two file sI just transferred..
It turns out I deleted everyting without noticing.
The stpes I followed was to go to disk utility then select the hard drive and click erase (not knowing this would erase evrything).
So now I have two files on my hard drive and no idea how to recover the 'delted' files.
I tried using Disk Drill, which found the files but then it said I need to buy the full version to recover them.
I am wondering if there is any free methods to recover these files at all

Mar 17, 2009I bought my first mac (Aluminum Macbook 2.0GHz) a few days ago. So far so good. The learning curve wasn't as steep as imagined. There's an error I haven't been able to resolve. I transferred all my files to my external hard drive. A 500GB Western Digital HD.
When I try to delete files from the external HD I first get this message:
"The item "whateveri'mtryingto.delete" will be deleted immediately. Are you sure you want to continue?" I click continue and I get this: "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. (Error code -61)"
OS X V10.7 Lion :: Cannot Copy Files To/from External Drive
May 10, 2012I run an iMac 3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 10.7.3 and I'm having some serious problems with an external drive. Some history first - I have a large iTunes library (~3Tb) of everytype of media which I stored on an external NAS (iomega StorCenter) with no problems - then this NAS started to report a drive error with imminent failure. I purchased a new DAS (Western Digital) drive and moved all my content from the NAS to the DAS and everything was ok. Then I started to get errors through iTunes about cannot find the file and cannot read the files - and then I couldn't access anything on the drive. At this time I thought this was a different problem because I was running preview Mountain Lion, or there was an actual fault with the disk. After investigation, and coughing out for Data Rescue 3 I found that somehow the entire file structure had been corrupted and all my files had been orphaned. So at this point I had one dying NAS drive and one DAS which wasn't usable and no space to recover any files to.
So - next step was to purchase another external drive (and returned the WD) - this time I went for a G-Raid 4Tb (non-thunderbolt) drive and I've been in the process of recovering files from backups and iTunes. I've had no problems until today when yet again I've started getting errors and now I have problems copying files to/from this G-Raid drive.
Technical details - OS-X 10.7.3 - G-Raid 4Tb formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - currently showing 1,163 folders and 15,452 files.
Symptoms - using finder drag and drop copy a file from the g-Raid to desktop results in 'The operation can't be completed because the item 'xxx' is in use. - 'The operation can't be completed because one or more required items can't be found (error code -43).' and the copy fails.
Using the cp command I get a 'Resource Busy' error. However, this is not for all files - I've managed to copy all my books back to the desktop ok, when a couple came up with the above error I tried again and it copied successfully.
I have run Disk Utility - here are the details :-

and it's just got worse - in getting the info for this post I no longer have access to the drive. This is the second time this has now happened on two different directly connected drives (USB and Firewire) - which means the problem is elswhere. I've a stack of errors in the system.log file

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Can't Delete Files/folders From External Drive
Apr 25, 2012I have a couple of FW drives hooked up to my iMac and I just discovered I can't trash anything from them. Actually, ever since upgrading to Lion I've been having all sorts of permission issues, but that's another discussion. In this case I've gone to the info windows for these drives and I have only read premission and I can't seem to change it. I've done all the usual things to do so but it remains stuck on "read only." I'm regularly repairing permissions so I don't see that working, tho I haven't tried trashing anything from these drives in a while so I don't know how long it's been this way.

OS X :: Deleting Files From Memory Stick (Thumb Drive)
Sep 12, 2009I am still "new" to the Mac world and I have a question about memory sticks/thumb drives and deleting info. I deleted some stuff from a thumb drive and it shows up in the trash can, but when I eject the thumb drive the trash can is empty of the stuff I deleted from the thumb drive. So I figured nothing to delete from the trash can.
So today when I plugged in the thumb drive the stuff that I deleted shows back up in the trash can. So for fun I ejected the thumb drive and the trash was empty. Is this normal? I am now deleting the stuff in the trash can with the thumb drive attached and I can see it "in use" light flashing on the thumb drive.
OS X :: Hard Drive Space Still Same After Deleting Movie Files?
Mar 18, 2010I have a MacBook Pro with a 500GB HD with only 76 GB of space left. I moved 200GB of movie files to an external drive then deleted the movie files from my Mac so I could free up the space on the HD. For some reason the HD still shows only 76GB of space available even though the entire movie folder was deleted. Is there something I need to do to get finder to update the GB available?

Feb 18, 2009my mac had a lot of unused files so I downloaded "Disc Inventory X" to clean up my hard drive. I start searching using the app and I deleteted like a good 40 gigs. Then I notice a folder called ".Trash" that has everything that I recently deleted in it! I also notice that .Trash is one of the few folders where you can't delete the contents. how do you permanently delete files so they actually get deleted and not moved into a different place where you can't delete them? And how do you delete all the files in .Trash?

May 25, 2012I backed up my iMac desktop at work onto an external hard drive. I can see the files, but they are all locked. When I go to open, I receive the following message "The folder (whatever the name is) can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents." I understand that the system I want to transfer to is different, but is there -- shouldn't there be an override asking for the password.
Since I am the administrator to both systems, I would hope I could see the documents that I created.

May 17, 2012I need to free up room on my hard drive. I would like to delete all my .ipa apps. Can I do that? I have itunes match, and I also sync to icloud. I know when I want to reinstall an app I just do that through the cloud. I have deleted apps to test that this is ok but the apps end up getting reinstalled. Here is what I want to do:
1. delete all my .ipa files on my computer to save a lot of hard drive space (I have a lot of apps....)
2. stop syncing to my computer, and only sync to icloud
3. rely on itunes match for backing up music
4. have calendar and contacts sync through icloud
5. if I need to reinstall apps do that through the tab on the app store for 'purchases.'

Sep 7, 2009I have a flash drive that I use a good bit, but recently it's started doing this thing where it won't eject. Even force ejects hang and I literally have to restart the computer to get the message to go away.
It also has issues deleting files. Perfect example, I just plugged it in, dragged one file to the trash, didn't do anything else, and when I try to empty the trash it says that file is in use when it definitely is not. Then, giving up on that I try to eject the drive and it won't.
I'd say it won't eject about 3/4 of the time. Other drives are fine, so it's not something I'm doing, and it does it on every computer I try, so it's not just my computer in particular.Any ideas what might be causing this?

Most of whats on there is old backups from the past year & 1/2 that I have no use for anymore. is there a way to delete all of the backups that are on there right now without deleting the other files I've put on there. I have a bunch of projects and files on there that I cant put anywhere else and just format the drive. Basically, i need a way to delete all of my time machine backups off my external hd without deleting all my other files on there.

May 23, 2012In Snow Leopard: I open a Finder window in column view that has a long list of content, scroll down to the bottom of the column and delete a file/folder. The file/folder disappears but the rest of the window content is unchanged. IE: if my view showed me R S T U V and I delete T, my view would be R S U V. In Lion, I do exactly the same thing and the Finder jumps to the top of the column. IE: When I delete T, my window jumps to A B C D E instead of staying focused on R S U V.I've got a new Mac Mini with the 2.7 Ghz i7 upgrade... but otherwise stock. Currently running 10.7.4.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Enter Time Machine Does Nothing And Deleting Files In TM Backup?
Apr 11, 2012I couldn't enter Time Machine backups, that is, "Enter Time Machine" from the Time Machine menu item did nothing. I tried Postini's recommendations about resetting, repairing the sparsebundle image, and tried accessing with the bundle mounted. Nothing worked.
What did work was Time Machine Preferences>Select Disk… and clicking Do Not Back Up. Then a new item appears in the Time Machine menu items: "Browse Other Backup Disks…" Selected that and then selected my backup. And then I was in.
My purpose was to delete some large movies that were taking up too much space. I went back to the Finder and opened the folder where the movies had been (I had deleted them in the Finder) then went back to "Browse Other Backup Disks…" and there was the folder in Time Machine. And I deleted the files. I was later able to reselect my Backup disk and the options were still saved.However I haven't seen the space recovered yet. I may have to read more on compressing the disk image if it doesn't fix itself soon.

May 14, 2012I am deleting large amounts of files / directories with 10s of GB of disk usage from my internal hard disk.Then I empty the trash.But I don't get more free space on my hard disk!I am not using File Vault.(I also believe that my file system is not corrupt.)This is quite annoying, since I am still unable to copy stuff on my internal hard disk, but given the amount of files I have just deleted, I should be able to do so.

May 19, 2012For some reason, now when I delete or try to drag files/folders to trash, I get warning message 'This item will be deleted immediately. You can't undo this action.' And the files do NOT go into trash. Same if I CMD delete. I noticed this when I emptied the Aperture trash, got a warning something about permissions and cannot empty some files. They disappeared from Aperture, but the referenced master files were still in the original folder on my HD.(So I relocated the masters I was keeping, then deleted the remaining, they did not go into the trash but were permanently deleted). I don't recall changing any settings!I checked in Finder > Preferences > Advanced > 'Empty trash securely' is NOT selected.

I copied some directories/files from my PC to a LaCie external drive. I then copied them from the drive to the iMac.
I tried to delete, e.g., drag to Trash, them from the external drive while connected to the iMac. It didn't work. I tried a mouse right click, but no delete on Menu. Is there a way to delete files on the iMac? I ended up connecting the drive to the PC, & deleting the files, but I'd like to be able to do the same from the iMac.

As I plug in the hard disk in my Mac, I can't transfer the files. It says something like "the disk cannot be modified". So, please help me on how can I transfer this files from my Mac and if I do format it to work with the Mac, will it work for Windows later?
