Mar 19, 2010K...So I downloaded XLD to convert my FLAC files to Apple Lossless...But for some reason it is not transferring the whole album. Does anyone have any ideas on why this would be happening?

Apr 21, 2012I recently decided to sync my entire iTunes Library to my iPod instead of managing it all manually. I use the option "Convert higher bit rate songs to 256 kbps AAC", since most of my library consists of CD rips. At the end of each sync, I receive the following message:
"iTunes could not copy "Stage Start" to the iPod because the file could not be converted"
I took a look at the tracks in question, and couldn't find any good reason that they would not convert. They are ALAC files that I ripped from CD, and there are other tracks on the same album that converted with no problems. As a test, I changed the Import Settings to AAC@256kbps, right-clicked on the file and chose "Create AAC version", but received this message.
I'm not sure why it would say the file format is not valid, when it is lossless like all the rest and plays fine. I checked the file(s) in Finder and it has the .m4a extension like all the rest. The only thing different I noticed is that the album art thumbnail doesn't show up for these particular tracks.

Mar 19, 2012I have about 2TB of data on an external hard drive, which is connected by Firewire cable to my MacBook Pro. I am running Lion 10.7. One folder (and ONLY one folder) on the external drive contains documents with private data. I want to encrypt the folder, but not the entire hard drive. I tried System Utilities > New Image to create an encrypted disk image, but it seems to want to encrypt the entire image instead of just one folder. how to encrypt just one folder and the documents it contains, either with a proprietary Apple tool or with a reliable 3rd party tool?Â

Feb 9, 2012I'd like to encrypt my Mail folder in my Library. Is this possible? I'm not worried about other users on my mac, but if it is stolen, I'd like to know my emails cannot be accessed. I have TrueCrypt which I've used for files that I have created. It is quick and easy. But I'm not sure if this is compatible with an application like Mail which has a default file system. I've also hear that there may be issues later with mail if you try and search for emails once you've encrypted the folder.Â

Mar 13, 2012I would really love some help with this; I've been banging my head against the wall trying to achieve something that is seemingly so simple and basic.Â
We want to use an Email app that will allow us to encrypt only ONE email folder. Access to the rest of the email should be open to all users of the computer, just the one folder needs to be encrypted or password protected. Apparently this is not possible in Outlook, because in Outlook for Mac all of the folders are now integrated into one database and so cannot be encrypted individually as they can on PC. Â
Does anyone have any suggestions of how to achieve this? I am considering using Mac's Mail, but can't find Mail file structure on my Lion machine to see if I can access the individual mailboxes separately. Does anyone know where to find Mail's folder structure? I looked in the Library but found nothing for Mail, as it used to be in previous OSs. Am open to third party software work arounds, other email clients, whatever.

Nov 8, 2009I got an external drive (NTFS). I want to use it for mac. Do I just partition it into 2 partitions? Or do I need to Erase it into one Mac Journalled volume first? I am erasing it now, it says its gonna take 12 hours. Or is erasing the first step. And then partitioning is the second step. Two distinct processes/operations, right? (I basically want two partitions on it, both OSX journalled. One for super super, and the other to maybe try sandbox or just storage or maybe time machine.

To do this, I plan to create a new disk image using disk utlity, then dragging the particular Mail account to that folder. Since I don't want to encrypt all accounts, I'm not sure what folders I ought to put into my new encrypted drive image.Â
In the "homelibrarymailV2" folder, I do see the POP or IMAP folder for the account I want to encrypt, but I was wondering if I also need to add the "Mailboxes" or "MailData" folders that are also there since they seem to have information in them related to my accounts as well.Â

Chris Jacob is correct the "LP" series should be ALAC - Apple Lossless.

If Apple really wants to recreate that "feel" of buying a record, I have to feel like I'm buying something that isn't just higher quality, but also permanent. If I buy a lossy AAC file from the iTunes store today, not only do I know that it's inferior to the same $15 CD, but also that I'll have to chuck it once AAC is put out to pasture.

I'd like to convert them to Apple Lossless, as it's the same sound quality at half the space.
I know you can create a copy of any file in another format, but it sounds quite complicated. First you have to create a copy, and then you need to delete the "original" AIFF file.
Can't I just convert an existing file without a copy, keeping also the play counts?
OS X :: Script To Duplicate Apple Lossless ITunes Library As MP3 Files?
Sep 26, 2010I have written the applescript below to duplicate my Apple Lossless iTunes library as a MP3 Library. I wanted the script to be able to do the following things:
1. For all Apple Lossless tracks in iTunes Library (at the moment the script is just set to work with a selection for testing purposes) check if track already exists in MP3 folder with more recent modification date and:
a If yes, do nothing
b If same track with earlier modification date convert and replace track (so that tag changes are transferred)
c If track doesn't exist convert track.
2. If there are any MP3 files in the target folder that aren't in the source folder (i.e. the iTunes Music Folder), delete these files. This is for the scenario when I delete files from my iTunes Library that I no longer want, and I want the equivalent MP3 file to be deleted as well. So once the script has finished running there should be an exact match between the Apple Lossless library and the MP3 folder.
The script below does everything I want it to do with the following caveats:
1. I am not sure how to go about deleting the MP3 files as in part 2. I guess it would have to be an additional section of script which compares each file by name in the folder/subfolder in the iTunes Music Library with the equivalent folders in the target music folder, deleting any files found in the target music folder that don't exist in the iTunes Music folders, but I'm not sure if this is the best/only method, and how I would go about scripting this.
2. Because I need to specify the conversion twice (once if no file exists in target folder and once if it does but with an older modification date) I am wondering about using a subroutine method here. I tried doing so, but no conversions happened even though some should have happened. I wonder if this is because the relevant variables aren't picked up properly by the script when it's a subroutine. I can leave things as they are, just thought it would be good to make the script neater.

Mar 1, 2010It used to work: You highlighted the songs you wanted to create an Apple Lossless version of, and they would show up underneath the AIFF version.
No longer.
iTunes 9 still could do this.
iTunes 9.0.3 loses them. It processes them, puts them into the right folder, but you can't see them in iTunes.
Questions:
1. Can I downgrade to iTunes 9.0 where this bug wasn't present?
2. Or do I have to manually import into iTunes? (This would erase the playcount, I suppose)
Or is there any other way around this bug? (or isn't it a bug, but a feature that has been disabled by Apple for whatever reason?)
PS: I found a place where I can download iTunes 9.0.1 for OS X. Are there any possible problem when installing an older version over a newer version, e.g. in regards to the library?

I know I can use FileVault, which will give me an encrypted disk image but I don't like the reliability of sparse images and need the whole of the boot drive to be encrypted. I have tried Truecrypt to encrypt the TM disk, but could not get Time Machine to see it. I've been looking at the Checkpoint Full Disk Encryption product. What I'm trying to find out is if I can encrypt a USB HD with it, but seem to be going round in loops between Checkpoint and resellers.

Jan 12, 2009My question is related to using cascading ciphers to encrypt files (specifically using Truecrypt.) I am considering using Serpent > Twofish > AES.
I've heard a couple of different theories on this approach:
1. The resulting encryption will only be as strong as the weakest algorithm.
2. The resulting encryption will be as strong as the strongest algorithm.
Which theory is right?
Truecrypt uses the same passphrase for each cascading cipher. I've ben thinking that as soon as one cipher is cracked (probably the one which was used last in the encryption sequence) the plain text passphrase would be able to be simply used against the remaining two ciphers. Am I right?
Finally, is Truecrypt encrypting the data with one cipher, then encrypting the resulting encrypted data with another cipher, and then another? Or are the three ciphers being used to encrypt different sections of data?

Aug 30, 2014I have two G-Raid Thunderbolt RAID disks. Each is set up as a RAID 1 stripe (2 disks into one volume). I have my system disk encrypted with filevault, and would like to enable full disk encryption for the external disks as well. I tried the "Right click on disk in finder, select encrypt" option, but after I enter my choice of PW, I just get the error:Â
"A partition, not a whole disk, is required for this operation." Is this possible? Preferably, without formatting my disks all over again and enabling the encrypted FS at that time?
