Inserting the correct password, I cannot unlock the chain to install programs or modify system preference panel stuff. I tried repairing permission, and repairing keychain, and repairing disk, but I insert the password and the lock doesn't unlock.

I'm using Mac OS X 10.6. After copying some folders from external hard drive to PC these folders are now locked on Mac. There is no pencil in the Finder's lower left corner and there are no messages appear. I just simply can't open these folders.

However, when I search for a specific string in an email, the search returns the conversation of grouped messages and does not indicate the specific point in the message containing the text. In the case that finally prompted this post, the conversation contained 50-odd emails, since all of them contained the appended text of all the previous exchanges in the chain. I am then left with the task of scanning through 50-odd emails, whether they be separate or all retained within a single message, for the particular string I'm after. And that defeats the whole point of searching to begin with.Â
So, am I missing some functionality that overcomes this? Really all I want is for the search to return not just the email, but the location within the email (or chain of emails) where the text is found. Returning 50 hits because each email contains the text somewhere in the lengthy history of the conversation, without actually showing me where in the conversation the text appears,

I select Print from Firefox or whatever and then select the PDF button located in the lower left-hand side of the Print Dialog. Next, I select Save as PDF... from the list and then Security Options. In this window I enter a password that restricts modifying and printing the PDF and save it. If I open the protected PDF in Preview and try to print it I am prompted to enter a password, however, in Adobe Reader things are different. In Reader V10.1.2 for Mac The print menu option is greyed out and I can find no way to enter a password or print the PDF out.Â

I am new to the mac (OS10.7.4) having recently transitioned from Windows (and go way back to CPM - for those that remember). I am trying to achieve through finder what I can do in windows explorer by selecting multiple files, selecting properties and then selecting (and then modifying) details. I tried the similar thing on Finder using Get Info instead of Properties but only ended up with multiple windows, one for each file selected (and had to close each one individually! ).
Tried 'option-command-I' on multiple selected files, it worked, but the common tags that I wanted to alter where not available for editing. I can simply achieve the outcome I want by cutting and pasting the files to a usb stick, making the modifications on the windows machine and pasting them back on the mac. This should be a simple basic operating system function regardless of platform - how to find/achieve it!

The more I use Finder the more I realize it's pretty crappy. The "recent files" folder never actually shows any files. And when I create my own recent files saved search, it's hit or miss as to whether it actually shows my recent files. Ever since installing Lion, my MBP has been very slow and I cannot make any admin changes. In any event where admin privileges are needed, I hit the padlock on the bottom left of the window. It asks for my password. I enter it and it accepts, but the padlock is still locked. . . My username is listed as "Admin" in the users list. I can't add another user because I cant unlock that privilege. I've verified and repaired disk permissions and verified disk with no errors. The installation of Lion was on a clean Hard drive, not an upgrade. Considering going back to SL at this point.Â

So I accidentally saved the wrong files to my start up disc. It appears that mac is seeking direction and isn't getting it. All I get is the white screen with the spinning ball. Things I've tried already, 1. (Shift Key) Booting in Safe-Mode. result is: Mac starts to enter safe mode, the little power meter starts to build on the screen, after about 20 seconds the meter stops and the fan speed increases until it gets pretty loud. Eventually the fan speed mellows out, but it never actually boots up. 2. (Option key) This gives me a choice of two drives to choose from, MAC HD & Mac Recovery. I've tried clicking on both drives multiple times by themselves with no luck. I've tried clicking on them seperately and then went right into safe mode with no luck. 3. I've even tried downloading a recovery file from apple and put it on a disc. result: It reads the disc and the goes back to that wonderful white screen and spinning ball.

I lock the network preferences panel in the System Preferences, and the 10.7.4 Lion OS unlocks them when the computer restarts or when it is shut down and turned back on. I want to keep them locked. Is there a way to stop Lion from changing your preferences without asking?

I just got a new macbook pro, and when I popped my old secondary hard drive in, I notice that half of my mp3 files are now shown with a little lock next to them. I can manually un lock them one at a time, but I'm a professional DJ, and I have thousands of files. how to unlock an entire directory in one fell swoop? I didn't lock them to begin with, so this is aggravating.Â
I cannot save bpm or cue points to files while they're locked. My serato scratch live software will also not save overviews while they're locked.Â

After upgrading to an SSD, i was having problems with restoring files from Timemachine. i fiexed that by naming my ssd drive the same as the drive that was backedup using time machine. now, i can't seem to edite any of the files restored in Documents from the backup. not can i edit or add content inside the folders withing documents. i dont know whats going on. they appear lock and there is no way to unlock them. it says i will need to duplicate the items!Â

Awhile back I installed a wonderfully speedy SSD in my mid-2009 MBP. I used Time Machine to "restore" my stuff. I thought it odd that after that, song files would come up as "locked"...after awhile I realized that EVERY song file in the iTunes Library was now "locked". The FOLDERS are NOT locked, but all the mp3 files within each folder ARE locked.Â
I know, of course, that "command-i" and uncheck the locked box works on each individual file, but how do I do this on the entire library? Is that even possible? The tedium of opening every single folder and unlocking every file individually would be insane. Is there any way to select the iTunes Music folder and have all the files in all subfolders "unlocked" at once?

This is my first post and I'm after a little help if possible. Have a new i7 Macbook Pro and Im wanting to know if what I am thinking is possible. I have a WD FW800 HD which i have put video and music on, I then have an iomega USB HD which I use for time machine back ups. Can I daisy chain the FW and USB together and if so which way round would it be. In my naieve mind I am thinking the following- Macbook Pro connected to FW HD and then USB (Time Machine HD) connected into the FW HD

I'm a recently converted PC user and so far we love our iMac. The only issue we're having is with Key Chain and the Google Notifier. On my account I use the Gmail Notifier with no issues what so ever, on my Wife's account every time she logs in the Gmail Notifier asks her for her account information, when she inputs it, she is then prompted to input another password for the Key Chain. Every time she logs in it happens. The odd thing is that when I search for the Key Chain program in her profile I find the program, and I'm able to access it, however when I search for it in mine nothing comes up. We both have admin accounts, and the first account created was mine. Is Key Chain a separate program or does it come as part of OSX?

I will use one HD to store Music, Movies and Photos (I have about 500gigs worth at least) The other HD will be used to back up everything. I will be using it in conjunction with Carbon Copy Cloner so it will be bootable if I have any probs. Do I daisy chain the drives or get a Hub?
