I have 2 mail accounts setup in Mail. They are on separate domains I host on my server. One account works great, the other gives this error message every time I try to send. "Sending the message content to the server failed." It offeres me to use a different outgoing mail server.I am on latest Lion 10.7.3. mail version os 5.2 (latest). I connect through Airport Extreme.I Googled the problem and searched everywhere. I also tried deleting and setting up the account. I checked all my settings (multiple times). There is nothing to fix in settings. The Connection doctor does not see any problems.
Here is the really frustrating part: Messages actually get sent. The recipeint always receives them. If I try again with the same server, I get the same error message and again message gets sent. But to Mail it is still unsent and sits in Outbox prompting to send.I also tried the MTU trick. No luck. I should also say that I have seen this problem before on other accounts. I've also seen it come and go. It happened on Snow Leoprad and Leopard too.

I just set up Mail 4.5 and am receiving incoming mails but can't send out my emails. I get a message saying the SMTP server rejected the password. I know it's the correct password, have entered it a few times now.

Under Lion, 10.7.3, on a 2.8GHz Quad Core Xenon.Â
Have checked, rechecked, deleted, recreated, rebuilt, and did the ancient ritual of the chicken dance, but am always greeted with the Cannot send message using the server smtp.covad.net. Been through all the "resolutions" that I have come across, to no avail. This began two days ago.Â
I am also unable to send via my iPhone 4 (running iOS 5.1). I can send via the webmail interface for Covad, and the Connection Doctor generates all green.  Â

On some days I get the message 'cannot send message using the server mobileme' and 'sending the message content to the server failed'. On other days, mail works fine - (today is not a good mail day). Is there some setting that I need to change? I have been through the books, and as far as I can tell, it is all in order. Why am I getting this message and why can't I send my mail?

Occasionally when trying to send mail I recieve the 'Cannot Send Message Using the server' message. I click 'connection doctor' and it always confirms that everything is fine. If I then try to send the email again it will send it straight away, but if I try to send another in 10 minutes time, then I'll probably have to go through the same procedure again. I've never been unable to send mail, but having to launch connection doctor most of the time gets tiresome. I've been unable to trouble-shoot as its occurence appears to be random.

Can I set up my Mail account to use an out going SMTP server other than .me? I want to use my .me (iCloud) account for incoming mail but want another server for my out going mail. (The reason is a need to keep an existing From: address rather than be required to use "User@me.com".)

We are a small company that just recently started using Lion Server for a few simple services. We've been pretty happy with it and are considering trying to host our email on it as well, as we've had a little trouble lately with our hosted email being rejected as spam (since they're shared services). It seems to work correctly in a controlled environment on test email accounts that I've created, but I'm having trouble figuring out if it's possible to allow smtp relaying from a device (cell phone, tablet, computer) outside of the local network when the sending from is a virtual address.Â
Basically, it seems "user@company1.com" can send from devices off the network and authentication allows them to. However, we have two sister companies that we need email for as well. I would like them to be able to send messages from "user@company2.com" or "user@sister3.com."Â
When I try to send from one of those test accounts on an iphone outside of the local network, it says "A copy has been placed in your Outbox. The recipent "recipient@addressee.com" was rejected by the server because it does not allow relaying."Â If I add the specific IP address of that device to my allowed relay list, the message sends with no problem. Obviously, I don't want wide ranges of IP addresses allowed to use the relay service. Is there no way to allow relaying from any IP address based on an authenticated user?Â

immediately after downloading yosemite which seemed to have resulted in my email account not working.Â
no matter what I do, when trying to send an email Iget messages of SMTP offline'; I have tried all kinds of suggestions from on here all to no effect. Â
Tonight I deleted the accounts, logged off, rebooted and recreated the two email accounts. I can now receive email but still cannot send and get the same 'SMTP Offline' message as before.Â
As before the two accounts and same settings work flawlessly on iPad 2, windows laptop and two Android based phones, so must be linked to the iMac and Yosemite?   Â

Having some mail issues lately with my gmail account Imap set up. I can receive mail but when trying to send mail it pops up with the following: "Can not send message using the server [URL]" I tried deleting the gmail account on my iMac and setting it up again. in the set up It gives me two choices as an outgoing server: [URL] and just Gmail. If I choose Gmail I can send the messages, but is this secure? I've always used [URL] for outgoing without any problems.Â

I am using Macbook Pro (OS Lion), unable to send/receive emails. I have reset all settings (no help). Problem is temporarily resolved by logging into webmail but then issue returns once Apple Mail app is shut down and then re-opened. Server tech support (Rogers/Yahoo) says that the mail client keeps sending the wrong password so the account gets locked out. I have changed the password and re-entered all the mail settings?

Bit of a strange one to describe this, but I tried to send a message to a lot of recipients and it wouldn't send (I used the wrong server). Now I have an error message that falls off the bottom of the screen and I can't clear it.

Alright, this has been going on for about 2 weeks now? I finally got fed up with it today, did a lot of searching, found people with the same issue, but no ways to fix it. Basically, I have two gmail accounts. I can receive email just fine, but I cannot send it. When I do, it comes up saying can't use the server smtp.gmail.com:myemail@gmail.com. It offers to let me use another smtp server, but being gmail, it doesn't work either. Mail Diagnostics show connection to the internet, but has issues with the smtp server at times. It is sometimes listed as Offline, sometimes not. I have "Use default ports" selected, those being 25, 465, 587 under under the "edit smtp server list" on account information. Nothing under "IMAP Path Prefix" Port: 993 with use SSL checked. authentication is password, and works. That's all the info I can think of to provide you with, if you need anything else, just ask.

Using iCloud through Mail on OSX 10.7.4, I cannot send any emails.I receive them just fine, but it will always timeout when trying to send emails. The smtp server I seem to be on is p02-smtp.mail.me.com. I tried to ping it and it has 100% packet loss, although this might just mean they reject ICMP requests.Sending from my iPhone or iCloud on the web works just fine.

So the mail on my macbook just suddenly stopped being able to receive or send anything, everytime I open mail I get a pop up box saying:
The SMTP server [URL]rejected the password for user schreiber16
re-enter your password, or cancel.
So I enter my password but the box keeps popping up.
when it comes to this sort of stuff, and Google tells me that it may be something to do with my ISP.. but I'm at a loss how to fix it. I did a search and there have been others with the same problem as me, but most of them said the problem fixed itself, whereas mine hasn't after a couple of weeks.

Started off configuring the sendmail server through the known files. messed them up, stupid I know, but I'm learning...Â
I got the mailserver running again, get it working properly. First of all, the DNS is working as it should. Before I started, everything (except push notification server) was working.
(The PN server was a strange one, had to do with the difference in the name it fills in automatically from the Server Admin Mail panel) Â
Anyway, it is starting up now, but gives (for me) some strange logging's.Â
First of all, when I see some mailserver is trying to deliver mail it gets an error:NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from (smtp server) : 451 4.3.5 Server configuration problem; from=(sender)That should be a configuration error in the main.cf file.
But which one ?Â
The other is when I do a postfix check I get
/usr/libexec/postfix/post-install: Error: /usr/libexec/postfix/postfix-files is not a file.
postfix/postfix-script: fatal: unable to create missing queue directories
Strange, as I didn't change those settings
Is there a place where I can find the "original" from scratch main.cf and master.cf and the dovecot.cf files? If I have them I would and should be able to get it up again.. Â As I am running imap, am I going to loose all mail when I start a reinstall of postfix only, because of user issues ?Â

Woke up this morning, flipped open my MBP, and I see an Error Message that says that the Certificate is Invalid for SMTP Mail server. I looked, but it says it doesn't expire until 2014. So why does this message happen and what does it mean? I quit Mail, and then Restarted anyways to see what happens and all seems to be OK. But what does it mean and where does this message generate itself?

The problem suddenly popped up today: I wanted to send a message and suddenly got notification that Mail app is unable to send the message using Yahoo server, which I noticed being listed as offline. I clicked on "check connection" and it showed Gmail IMAP and IMAP as well as Yahoo IMAP being connected while Yahoo SMTP not.
On the right side of Yahoo SMTP Red "dot" there was the instruction, which recommended to check settings of the network connection as well as to make sure if the server supports SSL, and if "NO" - deselect it. I'm not as tech savvy so the marked part is just the Chinese language for me: what is SSL, how to check if the server supports it etc?
