After a hard disc crash I've restored my system from a time caspule backup.now I can not login to my system, as it doesn't recognize my password and there's only one user.
View 1 RepliesUsing my network mobile account, when I type in my password to login from the screensaver it takes a very long time and then goes back to the screensaver. Actually it takes a long time to accept my password always. Is it possible that it is timing out at the screensaver. If I type in the name and password for the admin account for the local login it works right away. The machine is a macbook pro 2.53 ghz mid 2009 model. it's running 10.5.8.

View 6 Replies View RelatedThis morning my iMac acted up so I used Onyx to find out what's wrong and it said it needs to repair the disk. Â
I then restarted, pressed cmd + R and tried to repair it but it said that I needed to back up files and would have to format the drive. Â Ok, good thing I just backed up my computer before the imac acted up, so I formatted the drive sing Disk Utility and then proceeded to reinstall OS X Lion.Â
Right now, it is still downloading stuff and have at least 5 hrs to go.Â
My question is, what would be the next best course of action to take:Â
Restore from latest TM backup? (will this be a good idea since the HD failed and cause the HD to fail again?)Â As much as possible, I want everything as it was before the crash. Or would it be better to start from scratch and reinstall everything? The only impt thing I want restored are my photos ( only backed up with TM).

My macbook ran out of battery two days ago. When I restarted it had all my data and files, but the settings had been reset (i.e. my screen saver, dock, expose, etc had all been reset to the original settings). A day later, the macbook froze and I tried to restart it. It now goes to the login page with my user ID but does not accept my correct password. Instead, the rainbow pinwheel spins for a few minutes before the login window shakes and then clears my entered password, as if it does not accept the password. After a few repeated tries, it offered me my password hint. I know my password is the same one I've always used. Â

I have an older Power PC Mac that runs OS 10.4. Mail does not accept my password on this computer. So I can neither send or receive mail. While my Intel Mac that runs Lion & iCloud accepts the same pw and works fine. What should I do? There is no update for Power PC Mail application. Is this time to discard this older Mac completely?

For the past month or so, any time I've tried to go through the process of installing an app that requires Installer to do the work, when it comes time to enter my admin password, nothing happens. The password box pops up, I enter the correct password (as when I enter an incorrect one it does its "incorrect password shake-thing") and, like always, the admin password box disappears. Normally at this point, the installer continues on to install the app, but instead it does absolutely nothing. I can click "Install" again to enter the password, but, again, nothing happens. I've tried changing my password, deleting preference files, doing a disk repair and permissions repair - nothing.

i did a last minute backup before i sold my late 07 Mini last weak and I was a little apprehensive abouthow well the restore would work on the new 2.53 mini.
Well I can now say I am very impressed, i turned on the new Mini and it asked if i wanted to restore and gave me a few options. i chose the TC and it was off and running, it took about 2hrs. when it finished it was like i was still using the old Mini, a perfect image clone. all my email, pictures, docs, etc. were there just like i left them.
so for those who have never done a restore you have nothing to worry about (as long as your TC doesn't crap out first LOL)
My Macbook came up with an error, saying the HD needed repairing - I had no problems, and wish I hadn't listened to it!Â
After trying to repair, it came up with errors, then wouldn't reboot. I had no problem previous to this point. The only option seemed to be to restore from Time Capsule.Â
Time capsule restored overnight, but then just went to the spinning wheel and doesn't look like it has completed the process. The last time I looked it said 35 mins to complete the restore, but now there is a grey screen and a spinning wheel.Â

Problem detected lately: When managing units (Airport Extreme) the Main Password to manage the Airport is not longer accepted when entered (asked by) server application. The password is valid and I am able to have full control over the base station when I am using the Airport utility application. Reseting and complete new installation of the Airoprt Extreme does not bring the wished result of being capable to manage the Airport Extreme thru Server Software.
View 4 Replies View RelatedSo I had to wipe and reinstall Mac OSX.5 (or at least the Apple store genius did). I backed it up just before I took it, and now I am trying to restore completely from the login selection (restore from a time machine backup).
It recognizes my time capsule, and my time machine drive, and it goes to the window where it asks you to choose what to transfer: "User name, network and preferences, applications folder, and finally my files and folders" At first it said "calculating..." for all of them, but all of them except the applications folder finished. It has been over 3 hours and the applications folder is STILL "Calculating" and will NOT let me select transfer.
I had a Macbook Air 11 latest version which I just sold. Now I have a Mac Pro 13 with a normal 750GB Disk. I did a complete restore of the last Time Capsule back up from the Air to the Pro. After this was completed I installed Lion latest release over the restored installation. Now everything is running but I still have the impression, that the pro is much slower than the Air - I guess one thing is the difference of performance between SSD and normal disks. But still the Pro has much more CPU power, right?Â

Sunday evening, when I found out, I ordered a remote wipe (from my Air) on the stolen iMac.  Apparently, it hasn't yet come online, though, so the wipe hasn't happened. Today I went a bought a new iMac, and right now I am restoring my (old/stolen) iMac onto my new iMac to a Time Capsule that the thieves didn't find. Suddenly, I got very worried: When it finishes restoring, and says "hi" to the internet, - will it appear to be the stolen iMac and be wiped?Â
In other words: how does iCloud identify the stolen computer - by the machine, or by it's content?(pretty worried right now, since I don't remember the six digit code that will need to be entered IF it is wiped; I made it up when I was completely frantic from the shock of walking into a home that was broken in to.)

I have a strange "/private" folder in my root directory (Macintosh HD) after a Time Capsule restore today. The folder is ~5GB in size, and appears to have been created during the restore process. The files in the folder have strange-appearing "system" file type names. Can I safely delete this folder? Not sure why its there, but given its size, I'd prefer to delete it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just set up the Mail app but dislike that even after I quit the app if I click it again to reopen it it doesn't require me to re-enter my password. This means even if I close/quit it and walk away from my laptop anyone who uses it can just click Mail and they have complete access to my Gmail account.
I went into preferences but could not find where or how to require it to ask for my password after it's been closed. If there isn't an option then I will go back to copying an address when on a website then opening gmail and pasting it and emailing. Obviously using the Mail app would be more convenient for those types of emails but if it means my account is always open and available for anyone to read then I will go back to the longer method.

I just did a clean install of Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro and I'm at the part where it asks if I already own a Mac. I choose restore "From a Time Machine backup", I select the backup volume but then the system is asking me for the passoword to my Time Capsule. What? I don't remember giving it a password. I tried my system password from my Leopard installation along with a bunch of common passwords I've used and none of them work.
View 2 Replies View RelatedEver since the advent of "Time machine" I have been confused by the idea that TM doesn't actually back up EVERYTHING... so I got Super duper AND Carbon Copy Cloner, thinking that they would improve my chances. If I make a superduper sparse image and want to restore from the external drive containing the image, do I also have to have SD on the external drive, or just on the original machine? Or do I need to have it on the external first and do the SD image from there? Am I better off to boot from the external and use CCC to clone to the external - and is it easy-restorable? Or do I simply use Time Machine and try not to think about what it ISN'T backing up? it's all so VERY confusing. What's the accumulated wisdom from the forum on this potentially emergency conundrum
