I recently installed Snow Leopard (10.6.4) on my MacBook. I just installed macport and I was trying to install emacs (23.2) with it. the installation proceeds without errors, but when I try to launch the program I get the following error message: "emacs: Cannot open termcap database file".

Double clicking on this icon brings a warning box advising disk image could not be opened as not recognised. Can drag or copy/paste icon into Application folder with the same response.

When I open my USB flash drive on my mac (snow leopard), all the files are expanded, and I can't figure out why. Then I have to go one by one closing them, and it's frustrating. Is there a way to set it to be collasped or expanded?

We will be replacing our G5 computers with new Macs soon (as in finally!). In the mean time I need to work for awhile on my laptop running Snow Leopard. Unfortunately, before moving to a new Mac I will probably have to switch back to one of the G5 Macs for awhile.Â

I use Comic Book Lover to read digital comics - these are .cbr and .cbz files, which are comic rar and zip archives, respectively. Pre-Snow Leopard, these were recognised by Comic Book Lover as Comic Book Lover files, complete with custom icons, icon previews, etc. I also use .rar and .zip files for archiving. When I installed Snow Leopard, it read all .cbr files as .rar files for Stuffit Expander, and .cbz as .zip files. I actually use UnRarX for rar file management, so using the Get Info box I changed all .rar files to use UnRarX, .cbr and .cbz to use Comic Book Lover, and .zip to use the standard Archive Utility.
Problem is Snow Leopard is not distinguishing between .rar and .zip and .cbr and .cbz. Once I've changed all .cbr and .cbz files to open with Comic Book Lover, all .rar and .zip files also get changed! Likewise if I set all .rar files to be opened with UnRarX, this changes all .cbr files! Clearly Snow Leopard is handling file types in a new way. Is there anyway around this, or am I going to have to pick one file type affiliation that would be most useful (say .cbr and .cbz opened with Comic Book Lover), and live with having to right-click on a .rar or .zip file to say "Open with..." UnRarX or Archive Utility?
I launched Mail as I ordinarily do. It opened up, but the header bar was grayed out. Finally I managed to open program via Message/Go To/ Inbox, but no messages appeared in any of my mailboxes (even though I had several still in there from today). Nothing is happening, I even can't quit teh mail program.

There are several computers here with multiple users, all of which have their own local accounts per machine.
For iTunes, the music will be stored on a network, which will auto-attach at login. Setting up iTunes to point to the network location, that's easy, and it copies music there.
However, iTunes still seems to insist on keeping its library database local, and then of course, moving from machine to machine, that user's library doesn't follow them, even if the music does because it stays on the network.
Is there a way to make iTunes store its library database somewhere other than the local home folder?
Thought that I would ask the collective minds at macrumors. I have been playing around with all of the databasing, collection, sorting apps that I could find.
Goal:
Main goal is a central repository for All of my documents (PDF's, word files, txt files, notes/receipts etc...), all with a user interface so that I may browse my documents.
Problem:
The problem I am having is that none of the apps i have found have everything I need. Now if i could put 2 or three apps coding into one, then I'd have a winner
Needs:
� Tagging system (Devonthink Pro is not functioning)
� Accessible file structure (no sparse bundles etc...), so that I may access my files via drop box if away from my computer, without the actual program.
� Smart Folders As Subfolders WITH Tagging. An example would be to make 3 Nested smart folders ( Personal Folder / School Folder / Math Folder) Now if I dropped a File on the Math Folder Tags would be added to the file to satisfy the entire Folder structure. Please let me know if this needs further explanation.
Wants:
� Shelf would be nice. Devonthink has one that operates as a separate app than the actual program, Together has one, but only when the program is active.
� Decent search ability, but I would think this is easily done utilizing spotlights abilities. I am already manually OCR'ing my PDF's with Acrobat.
I think i mentioned most things, but am sure i missed out on a few points. The best implementation of what I want is a mix of Journler, Together, and DevonThink Pro. Journler nails the tagging, and nested folders perfectly. But does not have a file structure that is usable without the program. DevonThink fales with both nested folders and lack of tagging. I have settled on Together for now, as it works with the file structure I want, and supports tagging. Just does not have smart tagging.
I rencently upgraded from Adobe Lightroom 2 to Adobe Lightroom 4 and I can't open the .pkg file with Installer. Is there another way to install an upgrade?I'm currently cloning my HD and I may reinstal the OS and try again. I get this error message.  Â

I tried removing and re-installing Office, but each time I open Entourage I keep getting the same message: the Database Daemon has encountered an unknown error. Does anyone know if there is a way to open port 80 ONLY? So I've been having a lot of internet issues since clean installing leopard. My neighbor, who works for Verizon, came over to take a look and thought I was having some DNS issues. He edited the "host" file and now my internet connection seems even worse. I found instructions online on how to edit the host file, but could someone post what the host file is actually supposed to look like in Snow Leopard since I don't know what he changed? I still have a completely clean install of SL, no 3rd party apps yet.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a small home network. Three macs all running the latest version of Snow Leopard (as of right now 10.6.2). I have my Mini acting as a file server. We do remote backups via SuperDuper to an attached HDD on the mini. So it just runs and does nothing. On the mini I have the admin account and then two "sharing" accounts. Lets call the sharing accounts 'user1' and 'user2'. I have shared one folder with 'user1' and a different folder with 'user2'. That way each user has their very own folder to put whatever file they want in there without the other user accidentally deleting or messing around with their files.
Both user account computers can connect to the Mini with no problem. The problem is that both user accounts can see and write to each other's folders. I have the permissions via "File Sharing" in System Preferences --> Sharing --> File Sharing set so that only the user and admin have read/write privileges and Everyone has no access. I know something is wrong because I have this exact setup at work and users can only see their shared folder.
After getting a replacement IMac and restoring all my files, applications, etc., from a Time Machine backup, I went to run a game I have which attempted to install a patch, but the patch would not apply, why, file permissions I'm sure. It looks like when Time Machine restored my computer it also restored my previous user account. I had to login as the restored user account to apply the patch. Now this brings up some questions.
My new user account is an admin, why wouldn't it be able to apply the patch. I logged into my old account to give my new account read/write permission on the game folder, but still couldn't apply the patch? Do I have to be the owner? Any good links about file permissions in Snow Leopard. I'm thinking I may have to re-install these apps to fix the permissions.
I have a .swf file that I've converted to a Windows .exe, but I also need it as a .app file to run on my Mac.I haven't been able to find a way.

I know iDisk has always been slow and flaky in OSX but this is just getting ridiculous.
