It is as simmple as the title. I can not drag and drop icons or text or folders. Nothing. As for cut, copy, and paste they do not work either. I am trying to back up my files so I can do a clean install of snow leopard. I have leopard currently.

I can't copy and paste, drag and drop, or use spotlight on my macbook purchased in 2007 running mac os x 10.5.8.
I noticed the problem when using serato scratch live initially because it wouldn't let me drag and drop the songs in to cue. I was able to use the key board short cuts and moved on. I then tried to clear some items from my desk top to the trash can and was unable to drag them. I was able to open the desk top in the finder and use the file, move to trash option. The problem became unbearable when I was reorganizing a word document and could not cut and paste within the document. The commands did not work from edit either. I have found that I am able to cut but not paste in the mean time.
A user kindly pointed me to a link using the terminal to see if I had a tmp folder. I did but the date was from October of 2007 which is around when I bought the machine. I have run repair permissions from disk utitilty as suggested in yet another forum to no avail...hence reposting with my specific symptoms? Short of reinstalling mac os x, what are my options DOC?

View 24 Replies View RelatedI suddenly lost the ability to drag and drop and copy and paste. I've looked up previous threads and have done what they suggested to no avail. I've restarted finder; rebooted the computer; repaired disk permissions; and tried to trash the cache file "com.apple.dock.iconcache" but when I ctrl + clicked it to send it to the trash, it was removed from the cache folder but doesn't show up in the trash bin. This is my work computer so I need this resolved ASAP.

I have two Virtual Machines running on my MacbookPro. One is Windows and the other is Ubuntu. The Windows 7 system is running perfectly well but the Ubuntu VM has got issues with dragging/dropping files from Mac to Ubuntu and vice versa.When I checked on the Parallel Desktop's forum, the only solution provided was that the Parallel Desktop's tool should be uninstalled and reinstalled; which I have done. But that didn't solve the problem. The Configuration menu "Virtual Machine" offered checkboxes for the (Copy & Paste) section, and I can confirm that both boxes for 'Share Mac Cipboard' and 'Preserve Text Formatting' are checked. That should have solved the copy/paste problem but didn't.

restarted (multiple times), tried booting up in Safe Mode (by pressing shift when starting up), and repaired disk permissions using disk utility. I even ran all of the daily, weekly and monthly scripts using Cocktail.
i cant seem to be able to copy paste or drag anything on my macbook. I can copy its just when i paste it doesnt work as the 'paste' is grayed out but also keyboard commands dont work either. I don't know when this started, but it's been the case for months: let's say I drag 10 albums' worth of files to copy to my iPhone (under manually manage music)--that will take a minute or so to copy via wi-fi. But, now, if I drag another album over to copy before the previous batch of 10 has finished transferring, the 10-album transfer is canceled, and the new album starts copying in its place. Before, dragging new files over to the phone during a copy would add to a "queue" such that your current copy job was not canceled.

I have had this problem for a long as I have had Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. The problem is that drag & drop works intermittently for applications such as the Finder, iTunes, Fetch, etc.
My workaround for the Finder was to switch from list view to column view, but for programs like Fetch or iTunes, I cannot do that. Sometimes the solution is to relaunch the application, but this is not guaranteed.
I am running every latest update available (as of Nov. 18, 2008) for my system and software. I am currently on Mac OS X 10.5.5. The problem also affects more than one computer. These are the computers I've experienced it on:

A colleague of mine has a Mac G5 with OS 10.5.8 and Adobe InDesign CS5 installed which has suddenly stopped working. On top of that she can't drag or drop items either. She didn't have this issue yesterday. She didn't install anything new or added any new hardware.
View 2 Replies View RelatedNormally consider myself quite able to troubleshoot my own problems, but I can't for the life of me figure out what to do here, and can't seem to find many others who have the same problem. The drag-and-drop function in Snow Leopard appears to be either broken or deliberately crippled. My work sees me having to move a lot of files from folder to folder, and I've discovered that, as of fairly recently, I can no longer drag-and-drop more than 85 objects from one folder to another. Up to 85, everything works just fine -- but if I select 86, upon dragging I get an "X-ed out" icon, like the "no smoking" or "no parking" circle with a line through it.
I'm not quite sure what to do about this, but would be very curious and appreciative if anyone else has the same issue, or has figured out how to solve it! This, combined with the lack of a "cut" feature in OS X has begun to really impede my workflow.

I think it is because I deleted the StartUpitems folder thinking it was Start Up Items. I was going through deleting anything with the name of a application I no longer used. I do not know what to do, but I cannot drag or paste any files.
It afects all users. Is there anything besides Install and Archive that I can do?

IF you cannot drag and drop in iTunes for Mac then the issue is your Windows Mouse. Use a Apple Mouse or the Touchpad. It will solve the problem.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have most of my music hosted on an FTP server, so I'm looking for a way to drag and drop from the FTP server (connected either through Finder, or any other client) into iTunes, and then have iTunes copy the music to my library. That way I don't have to download it to my local HDD, then import into iTunes, then delete the orginal. Just skipping a ton of extra work if I can drag and drop. Currently, I only get disconnected from the server if I try to drag and drop from Finder, and get nothing from Filezilla, and Transmit.

So, I hate the tap to click and I can't stand the unibody trackpad click and drag. I can't seem to keep it depressed and drag across the entire High Res screen. Is there any alternative? Say a key I can hold to lock the click so I don't have to keep the pad depressed?

I can start dragging fine, but once I start the mouse pointer won't let go, even if I release the button, and nothing will cause the pointer to drop the item being dragged save killing the application I was dragging from. It's especially infuriating when dragging items around on the Dock, because when you're dragging a Dock icon you can't select items with the mouse, and earlier today I had to use a series of keyboard shortcuts to get to the terminal to kill it.) A restart will usually fix this, but it inevitably pops up again. It happens with both my Mac's trackpad and my Magic Mouse, so it might not be a hardware issue but I'm not sure. I previously used JiTouch for additional gestures, but I don't think it's the cause as the issue crops up even when JiTouch is completely disabled + uninstalled.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was normally dragging pictures FROM Safari TO a folder. I don't want to "Save As...", because it's much more time consuming than simply drag and drop. All of a sudden, the feature does not work anymore. I can only drag images to a TextEdit, creating a Web Archive -- I don't need that, I need to drag them to a folder. Is there anything I can do? I'm using an iMac with Lion OS, and I did update to the last version of Safari.

I recently bought a Macbook Air which I am still getting used to. I had an older Macbook with a mouse because I disliked the trackpad on the Macbook; the Air trackpad is much nicer but I can't seem to drag and drop anything in stacks. Is there a setting or gesture that is not mentioned in the Apple documentation? I have tried everything that I can think of and nothing has worked.
