OS X V10.4 :: USB Warning And Ports Not Working After Update To Snow Leopard From Tiger

Apr 14, 2012

This morning I've installed OS Snow Leopard 10.6.3 on my iMac, previously I had OS Tiger 10.4.11 running. Everything seemed fine until I restarted and then I started getting "USB drawing too much power" promps all over the place even though the only thing that's attached to the iMac is the keyboard and the mouse (they both work fine). The process went like this:The iMac is a 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo from october 2007First I did an upgrade of my RAM, from 1GB to 2GB, that went ok.Then I runned the install dvd for Snow Leopard, I did not perform a clean install, just did it over my old data. After restart, everything worked but i got this USB warning message, one of them. At that point my usb's still worked, (even though the warning) I could print and scan. To get rid of the warning, i resetted the PRAM and SMC. After doing so, the promps multiplied and my usb ports ceased working, except for the keyboard and the mouse attached to it.I've done the Apple Hardware Test, and it gives no malfunctions.Firewire works fine, Isight buildt-in camera and bluetooth too.I've tried all usb's and the keyboard will work in all of them, not like my printer and scanner which are completely ignored.USB power warning also appears at restart with no deviced connected (no keyboard and mouse, i've tried).I've also found in many forum entries  the possibility of a problem on the logic board, but since i've never had a problem with my imac until today i would not be sure about a hardware malfunction. The last thing i've found around that could be a clue is something about the kernel extensions, but that's complete chinese for me, I'm  a mac plug&play user and not too much of a mac expert.

MacBook :: Upgrade From Tiger To Snow Leopard/unable To Use The USB Ports

Apr 19, 2010

TI used an external HD to back up everything first. I upgraded and it went just fine. Now neither USB port will recognize anything plugged in. iphone, ipod, camera, external HD, nothing. Someone suggested zapping the pram, but that didn't work.

OS X :: Won't Work With Backup And Update From Tiger To Snow Leopard

Sep 15, 2010

i have an intel MacBook that i bought just before Leopard came out. Its currently running Tiger 10.4.11 and I'm thinking of upgrading it to Snow Leopard.

Ive never had problems upgrading before, but I'd like to make a backup of it first (just in case). My other Mac has Leopard on it when i bought it so I've had Time Machine to do it all for me. However, obviously, there is no Time Machine in Tiger.

Could i simply plug in an external HDD and have disc utility make a Disk Image of my MacBook HDD onto it to use as a backup?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: IPhone USB Tethering Stop Working After IOS 5.1 Update

Mar 16, 2012

USB Tethering stop working (while WiFi and Bluetooth tethering continue to be ok) on Mac 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard fully updated) after my iPhone device has been updated from iOS 5.0.1 to 5.1.The present issue is not related to the iPhone (Personal Hotspot ok, Carrier/APN settings ok). Moreover, USB layer seems to be ok on Mac also due to the fact that iTunes recognizes it correctly. Network Services on Mac are instead affected. Steps to Reproduce:1. Remove 'iPhone device' from Network Preferences;2. Connect iPhone via USB cable to the Mac;3. OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Time Machine Has Erased All Previous Backups Without Warning

Apr 14, 2012

Yesterday, I got a disk read error when starting up Windows under Parallels Desktop. After some sleuthing, I found the offending file, and was about to restore from my Time Machine backup when I decided to make sure the disk wasn't going south. I booted off a second, backup, system drive that I keep just for this purpose, and ran aDrive Genius disk scan on the main system drive. All good, only 6  bad blocks on a 1T drive. I ran this overnight, as it takes an hour or two.

This morning, after seeing this result, I booted from the internal system drive, located the offending file again, and entered Time Machine to restore the data. What I found was that ALL of my Time Machine backup data had been deleted. The only data there was a backup from late last night, that WAS FOR THE SECONDARY DRIVE I HAD BOOTED FROM. Seemingly, Time Machine had quietly gone and killed all previous data, and started from scratch backing up my spare drive.

There was no warning, no notice, nothing. Over a years worth of backups were gone, and my Parallels installation is now shot, since I can't fix the read problem. I'm contacting Parallels to see if there is any other remedy. You can imagine how absolutely mad I am at this.

NOTE:

1) I did not touch the backup drive during the boot of the second drive, or the scan test. It was not re-formatted or touched in any way (other than by system software)

2) No warning was given for the deletion

Software :: 10.4 Tiger And Blocking Ports For IPv6

Feb 8, 2009

I am using free.fr in France, and IPv6 is enabled as part of the service. There are certain services running that were only accessible to the local network, but I now find that if I know the IPv6 address of the machine they are world accessible. I tried limiting services to be only accessible to the local machine, by adjusting the settings in the Firewall configurations in the system preferences, but the services still seem to be world accessible. Do the firewall configurations ignore IPv6? Is there any way to make it so that services are only available to machines in the local networks via IPv6. I suspect I going to need a command line tool or a third-party tool.

OS X :: Tiger To Snow Leopard Disc

Sep 12, 2009

Now that it's been out for awhile, I was curious what people's success rates have been with just getting the Snow Leopard disc and not the box set to upgrade Tiger? Or is it still recommended to get the Box Set? I honestly rarely use either the iLife or iWork suites, so that's why I was wondering.

Just wondering what might be the best route, since apparently the box set doesn't include anything to do with Leopard.

OS X :: Mac OS X Upgrade From Tiger To Snow Leopard ?

Apr 5, 2010

I am helping a friend upgrade a three year old iMac from 10.4 (tiger) to 10.6 (snow leopard), she has purchased all the software 10.4, 10.5, and 10.6 upgrade. For some reason she never moved to 10.5 even though she had the DVD. In addition I wanted to have a "clean install". The first thing I did was make a backup of all of her files. Then I booted 10.4 from DVD and used disk utility to erase the hard disk. Next

I booted 10.6 from DVD and selected English as the language, then I get the following error: "Mac OS X can't be installed on this computer. It requires a previous installation of 10.5."

Do we really have to go from 10.4 to 10.5 to 10.6? What a pain in the butt!!! Any ideas on how to skip 10.5? I already erased the hard disk.

Here is a link that recommends a clean install:

OS X :: Tiger To Snow Leopard Options In A System?

Oct 31, 2010

In the process of doing clean install from tiger to leopard and I'm running into some issue. 1st attempt - was stuck on initial "Install" screen (After I erased my HD and selected drive to install but before the Install screen changes to show the status of the install remaining) for 35 minutes. I stopped the install and restated.2nd attempt - Finally got to the progress bar, 28 minutes remaining. However, it didn't move from there. I checked the Installer Log and it kept trying to install printer drivers and foreign fonts, but unsuccessful. Finally got an error message stating install was not complete. Restart.3rd. attempt - This time I unchecked printer drivers and fonts. Progress bar stated 18 minutes, now it's down to 17 (after like 10 minutes) and according to the Installer Log I keep getting errors in stuff (Error writing caches to /Volume/...., Input/output error, Failed to enumerate /Volumes/...., Cannot prune("com.apple.user*pictureCache*"). However, according to the progress bar, it keeps moving through the processes, still show 18 minutes now.

How do I do this? (This question directed to anyone who HAS done it or feels comfortable enough with the procedure to run me through it)I'm running Tiger at the moment. I've read that the $29 upgrade disc works to install Snow Leopard onto Tiger also. I want to clean install and only back up music, videos, pictures, email, and personal documents like work. I do not need any of the applications that I've added to my macbook pro over the years. I do not have time machine. Will I lose all applications from safari through ichat and itunes if I clean install or are those applications on the Snow Leopard install disc.

OS X :: Tiger And Snow Leopard Boot Partitions

Sep 1, 2009

I want to keep my tiger system to boot form and use. I also got SL (bugs aren't a big deal, I have my current system to use). I have a 500gb installed. I already have my tiger system on its partition. I have another all waiting to install SL. There is only a couple of applications that I always use that I will install on SL on top of the iLife stuff that comes with SL (I got the Tiger upgrade package). I don't plan on migrating them, but do a fresh install. What I'm concerned about is my airport/network and user account. If I already have my Tiger system and airport xpress working with a name, encryption and passwords.

Do I need to migrate those settings over or can I have a entirely new settings for the SL boot? IOW, does the airport store the settings and WEP Passwords and all that stuff and can't have a totally new set of settings when I boot off of SL? Also, my user account. I'm the only one who uses my computer so I just have the one admin account I set up when I first got the machine. So do I need to migrate thst over too? Or can I/should I create a totally new account for SL? Or can I create a new account, but keep the exact same name and passwords that I use under Tiger?

OS X :: Upgrading From Tiger To Snow Leopard - No Backup

Oct 12, 2009

Posting for a friend who has just purchased Snow Leopard Box Set and wants to upgrade from Tiger. She was half way through the installation when she thought that Snow Leopard had not asked her to back up and she cancelled the installation half way through (not sure how, think she just turned off her Mac). She turned it back on but the only option it is giving her is too continue with the installation of Snow Leopard.

What she wants to know is will the erase all her data on her hard drive, or will she still have her files located in Documents/ Downloads etc when the installation is complete. I know when I upgraded from Leopard all these files were still present, I'm not so sure if it is the same with Tiger. Shes really worried about this as she has some valuable files in there.
