OS X V10.4 :: How To Upgrade Mac OS X From 10.4.11
Mar 17, 2012
I'm currently running with the Tiger 10.4.11 Mac OS X on my MacBook, but I need to upgrade my OS to at least 10.5.8 to install and run some software. For some reason I can't out how to do this! Can someone tell me how I can upgrade my OS, and what OS I can/should upgrade to? Do I have to install a version of 10.5 (Leopard) before I can upgrade to a version of 10.6 (Snow Leopard)? And if so is this still possible as the oldest OS I can find online is 10.6.

I am kicking around between upgrading video card in my 1st gen Mac Pro (2 x 2.66 dual core, 8gb ram) from 7300 Gt to ati 4870 vs. upgrading to a newer system altogether...
Newer MP has 2 x 2.66 quad cores, 12 gb ram with the 4870 card.) What kind of improved performance might I really expect or even notice when using photoshop, light video editing, 3d graphics.
I have not included costs because I want to focus on the performance boosts sans cost for the purpose of this discussion.

Looking at getting a 13" MPB to replace my aging Macbook. I am aware of the imminent arrival of the next gen next year, but still seriously considering getting a current gen.
Anyway, I am debating between getting the 2.66GHz version with 4GB RAM and the 2.4GHz version with 8GB RAM. I already have a 500GB 7200rpm HDD which I will transplant into it. Some stage in the next year or so I will look into getting an SSD and optibay for it.
I know that if I get the faster processor I can upgrade the RAM at a later date, but is the faster processor worth the money, or would I be better spending on RAM?

Maybe this isn't the correct forum...I'm a newbie. Today, after checking and installing upgrades to my iMac OS X, I'm seeing a pop-up saying 'my existing messages need to be upgraded the first time I use Mail again." I'm not sure what it intends to do to my Mail messages and I'm slightly fearful because many of them are Outlook Express messages that were transferred from my old PC. Anyone gone ahead and done this 'mail upgrade' yet? and did you have any issues?

I went to BB and bought the upgrade for my MBP running Leopard but I decided I would try to install it on my Tiger running iMac almost possitive it would not work. It however worked and even installed faster (1/3 the time) of my MBP with more Ram and better processor. So it is definitely done

I am curious about the system requirement of Snow Leopard. Since the performance and speed are better on SL, I think Snow Leopard will consume a little bit more resource of our macs., although I know Snow Leopard is just only the refinement of the software.
So, my question is that WILL YOU UPGRADE YOUR RAM OF YOUR MAC?

I have a 2.66GHz Mac Pro (4-core) with 8GB RAM.
I also have a 2.80GHz MacBook Pro (mid-2009) with 4GB RAM.
My main programs are Flash, Dreamweaver, and Photoshop. I use these on both Macs.
I do a small amount of AfterEffects, UltraFractal, Bryce 6, and Cinema4D, but nothing *big*. I typically use these on the Mac Pro only.
I spend most of my time on the Mac Pro.

I am using a 733 mHz Power PC G4 running OS10.4.11. I also have OS 9.2.1 on a second internal hard drive to run PageMaker software (not available on OS10). Presently, while in OS10, I can click on the PageMaker software icon and PageMaker boots up in OS9 "Classic" on the OS10 desktop.
Upgrades for some of my other software require 10.5 & up, so I would like to upgrade to OS 10.5 Leopard but I'm not certain I can keep the easy Classic bootup described above.
I would also be interested in upgrading to a G5 desktop Mac, but believe I was told that I have the last model G4 that allows both operating systems (OS9 and OS10) to function.

Got the bug to upgrade my iMac G5, 10.4.11. Question: jump to 10.5 or big jump to 10.6? Is there a big difference between 10.5 and 10.6? I'm on a budget and looking for the best deal around--don't want to get ripped off. Refurbished iMac a good deal? Ebay? Apple store? Other? I do a lot with pics, writing, some graphics and I like speed and storage. There is a cost in replacing some software I already have (Disk Warrior 39) that I understand 10.6 doesn't accept. I think there's a place to verify what softwares are compatible. Right? What is it called?

I've been trying to upgrade from 10.6.7 for months. I've tried every type of installer and installation technique I can find. I always get the grey screen telling me to shut down the computer from what looks like a kernel panic on start up. Oh, and forget about Lion, that does the same thing. I need to upgrade because a piece of audio equipment that I bought needs 10.6.8 or higher

Currently running 10.5.1, skype crashes all the time as soon as I try to call or IM. Same for YHOO msgr. So I thought I go for an upgrade and downloaded the last update to 10.5.4 (560MB). As soon as I try to install the file the updater gets stuck in the first window (configuring installation). I left it alone because I thought it might needs some more time (Powerbook G4.1.5, 12"). Nope, after 3 hours still no moving along for the bar and I just end up shutting the machine down via the power button. I really would love to use skype and the other msgrs again, get the upgrade to work. Download the patch again? I don't even know where the already downloaded patch sits, if I can't install it I will certainly like to delete the 560MB.

I have a Mid 2009 Model Macbook Pro 17" with currently 4 Gigs of ram. I contacted Apple and to upgrade to 8 Gigs of ram from them would cost me $600.
( Type of Ram is Apple Memory Module 8GB 1066MHz DDR3 (PC3-8500) - 2x4GB SO-DIMMs )
That is a ton! I was shocked.
I looked at newegg.com and it looks to be around 250 bucks to upgrade and buy ram from there.
So I have a quick couple of questions.
1. What brand of Ram do you think is the best?
2. Do you guys know of any other places to buy it from for less?
3. Will this void my Applecare warranty?
I looked up how to switch it and that seems quite simple so no help needed there.

I m about to order an Macbook Air and after reading through many posts here i decided to order the max out RAM as it could be needed in the futur for new software updates. But is it really necessary to max out the cpu also? It s not about the 100 euro more it s more about that here in France in the Apple stores they don t have the once with max out cpu in stock but they do have some with 4 GB RAM.
without any problem. But will this also apply to the apps like MS Office ?

So my Macbook Pro is coming and it's a 15in Core Duo 2.16Ghz with 2 cores. It's already up to 2GB of Ram which seems to be the max. But the HDD is only 100GB. Is there a certain limitation I can go up or can I go has high as I want? Because I was hoping to get a 250GB which is the perfect amount.
The reason I ask this is because I heard from someone that there is a limitation.
