Mac OS X Lion Server :: Create A Group Calendar In ICal Server 3?

Jun 22, 2012

I have set up a Mac Mini server to address the calendaring needs of my company. I have also turned on the iCal service using the Server app in the Lion OS.  While the shared calendaring functions for individual users of iCal are great, my company is in need of general office calendar for postings of things like vacation times, company holidays, special conferences, etc.  Is there a way to configure the Mac Mini server to allow the setup of such a calendar?

OS X :: Setting Up Mac As A Remote Server NOT A Local Home Server

Mar 19, 2009

I have a Mac pro that I use at home. I want to set it up as a server. Like a hosting server that I can log on to anywhere in the world, not just on my local network. I want to set it up similar to a hosting account through someone like godaddy. Where I can log in using FTP or something else. Do I need to install Mac OS X server? I've tried searching but I keep find local home servers. Anyone got any ideas? I'm guessing the first thing I need is a static IP, where do I get that?

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Does The Mail Server Need Local DNS Turned On

Apr 16, 2012

I use an external DNS that includes MX and mail entries and A records that point to a static IP provided by my ISP, stored in my router, that in turn accesses services on my lion server via port forwarding. The DNS service on my lion server was turned on but I turned it off and I'm not sure I've noticed any difference - I've got issues either way. Do I need it for any mail server related reason?

MacBook Pro :: Possible To Use System As Sharing Local Server

Nov 16, 2009

I would like to ask about the macbook pro late 2008. I am willing to own a network local sharing server in my University so, students can upload their multimedia files and movies etc to my mac using the local network of the university connection. Student will use torrents apps to download files from the server so they log to the website which I will create and they download the tracking file then they open it and use it to download the file from the server via torrent apps. My Macbook pro is 2.4 with 4g ram and with 380G HDD I own a new macbook pro late 2009 so I will not use the old one and I will keep it online 24/7. But I don't know if I can use it or not for this purpose.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Set Up With Caching DNS For Local Network?

Jun 16, 2012

Our new Lion Server has a static IP Address pointed to over the internet by our registrar's zone file. Planning the Lion Server installation process with the intent of hosting Web, Mail and Open Directory services to a small number of users who are nearly all located off-site. I do also want Lion Server to be a caching DNS Server and DHCP authority on the local network to replace what dnsmasq does on our current Linux server.

I am looking forward to offloading some of the lower level Linux administration tasks and putting myself in the hands of the Lion Server Setup Assistant and Server App :-) but at the same time don't understand some of  its assumptions and fear having to spend a lot of time experimenting and re-installing.

So, specifically, I want the Server App to know that my Lion Server has a "Host Name for the Internet" but that the DNS it sets up will not be the DNS for my zone - I will be managing that through my registrar's interfaces.

Second problem is my fnot understanding what name space devices on the local network will / should use. e.g.  The Linux server will be available for backups etc  on the local intranet (and optionally have a static ip address on the Internet) but MacBooks, PCs, iPads and iPhones will be served ip addresses by the Lion Server's DHCP. So will / should these dynamic devices have their machine names fully qualified by our domain name with RFC 1918 style ip addresses or something like .local?  How do I tell this to Lion's Server App / Setup Assistant? How easy is it to update these initial settings later?

Software :: Looking For Group Calendar (ICal Server Setup)

Apr 16, 2009

We're currently using TeamAgenda; it works but it's expensive and ugly. Spent days trying to set up iCal Server and just couldn't make it work with Sunbird. Is there anything good I've missed?

Requirements:
- Win & OS X client
- Shared calendar only; email/groupware functionality is not needed
- In-house hosting
- Reasonable price for 50-100 users
- iPhone sync
- Web interface

Or should we just wait for 10.6 Server?

OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: ACL Group Permissions Not Propagating?

May 3, 2012

I have a group of designers that are connected to X Server running Snow Leopard. I have placed them in a group, "MarComm" I have granted everyone full read/write access. ( I can trust them all) I have tried to propagate these permissions..I saved the changes and restarted server. For some reason there are 2 sets of permissions.

1) full access (desired configuration)

2) "custom" access

This "custom" access does erratic things..for ex:

Allows the designer to pull off a job folder containing 12 items. He has permission to use 8 items, but not the remaining 4.

Perhaps I need a step by step tutorial on how to create a proper "group" and to propagate permissions. I understand that the ACL should take precedence over the POSIX. I am not well-versed in using the terminal, but I am a careful person, and willing to try it.

OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Group Shared Folder Name?

May 16, 2012

I'm running OS X Server 10.6.8 and I created a new group in Workgroup Manager and I'd like to share a group folder for that group. I created the share and when I go to set the path for the group folder, Workgroup Manager keeps sticking the actual name of the group onto the end of the folder name I'm using. I have an example below since I know it is probably hard to understand what I'm trying to describe. On the group shared tab in Workgroup Manager, it asks for a Path name. My group name is Test and the folder I want to appear on the dock for this group is called Help. For the Path name I enter Help, since that is the name of the folder I want to appear. When I save the changes and go back to look at the information I put in, the Path now says Help/Test and when I log in, I have a question mark on my dock instead of the Help folder. This used to work in 10.4 without any problems. Now 10.5 & 10.6 want to call the group shared folder whatever the name of the actual group is.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Active Directory And Local Admin Account?

Jun 27, 2012

We have a local Admin account on all Macs, enterprise wide, for local and remote administration.

All Macs are joined to Active Directory. Our users DO NOT have Admin rights.

On ALL our LION Macs (10.7.4), when joined to Active Directory, we lose functionality to the local Admin account.

We can log into the local Admin account, but the desktop is useless. Nothing opens. We cannot create any files/folders without getting an Access Denied error.

AND then best part... everything on the Desktop, files/folders, are gone! Almost like a bran spankin' new account. With no access to anything locally.

Software :: Forcing Entourage To Send Local Data To The Exchange Server?

Jul 15, 2008

I accidentally deleted my entire exchange calendar. I use entourage to manage my exchange account. I have a back-up of the main identity file from just before the delete. Great, right? Sure, except that when I swap out the current (without calendar data) main identity with the back-up main identity (with calendar data), the data populates the calendar, but then gets wiped when entourage syncs with the exchange server. Specifically, the data disappears when syncing is at the "Updating sync issues" stage (as noted in the lower right hand corner of entourage during sync).

Neither I or my IT girl can sort out how to force entourage to use the local calendar data instead of the blank server calendar data.

Any ideas?

OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Force Software Update To Look At Apple Instead Of Local?

Apr 23, 2012

Our company has a SL server with Software Update service running.  We have all SL Mac's except for one brand new iMac with Lion.Of course, the new iMac cannot get software updates from our server unless I make some changes on the server to accept Lion updates.

I'd rather not do that, as with only one Lion-equipped Mac, I don't want to take up the extra space for all the Lion-related updates. So, the question is, how can I reconfigure this one iMac to look to Apple's servers instead of our local server?  I've looked and looked in the workgroup manager for where that assignment is, but this computer is not part of any group (user or computer) that might be inheriting the setting.

Is there a manual way to reconfigure the iMac to look to Apple's servers?

OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Manage Local User Home Folders?

Apr 27, 2012

We are using Mac OS X 10.6.8 in a classroom. Hard drive has two partitions, one for OS and apps, the other for student's files. Computers are bind to the Active Directory. Unfortunately, local home folders are on the boot parition. Over a time when apps FCP and Avid are frequently used, the boot partition gets filled with files and finally it's full. With zero kb available, users cannot even login anymore. Manually deleting files by admin is cumbersome and time-consuming task.

I'm looking for a way to keep /Users folder clean. Putting user's home folders to server is not an option, because of latency issues etc. Unfortunately the local home folder is the default saving place when user issues the Save As command. I've tried to tinker with the User Template to lock the Documents folder but apps like Microsoft Word and Final Cut Pro go crazy when they cannot save there. Forwarding /Users to other partition does not solve the problem, it just moves the problem to another place. Logout Hook to automatically purging the files could be an solution, but there's always one hapless soul who saves his or hers files to wrong place and loses them. Or maybe a script which looks at the modfication date and deletes old files.

Software :: Setup Local Fax - Fax Machine For Whole Office To Use?

Sep 22, 2009

at my work we have a Xerox WorkCentre 7232 with a phone line connected to it and an ethernet cable connected to it. You can print anything over the network so I know foresure that its connected to the network, and you can send faxes manually from it so I know the faxes are working. Now what I would like to do is make it so all the computers which are all mac's (10.4 or 10.5) in my office send faxes right from their computers by connecting to the xerox workcentre 7232. So if some one would like to send a fax instead of walking over to the machine they could just click on the pdf or word doc and tell it to be faxed from their computer. I tried to set it up with no luck, even call xerox for help but they wanted to send a tec over. So can someone assist me on how to set this all up? I'm I missing part of the puzzle and need some software?

I currently have my 1TB External Hard Drive for Time Machine hooked up locally to my iMac. I was thinking of freeing up a USB port by connecting it to my Apple Airport Extreme. When I searched about this I saw posts from a year or so ago that Time Machine would have to start over since it archives differently connected to Airport Extreme vs locally. Is this accurate? OS X V10.7 Lion :: Delete Time Machine Local Backup?

Mar 23, 2012

My MacBook Pro is running out of hard drive space, and the culprit is Time Machine. Apparently Time Machine stores local backups on the hard drive when it is not connected to the backup drive, and then is supposed to delete them when it does backup. However, this causes huge problems because I'm running out of hard drive space. I ran the following in Terminal to turn off the local backups:

sudo tmutil disablelocal

However, that has not freed up the hard drive space taken by the local backups.
