OS X :: Dmg File Unable To Copy To External Hard Drive?

I have OSX leopard as a disc image on my desktop. When I try to copy the .dmg file over to my external hard drive it copies for a while, then an error message says it can't copy it over and stops. I'm really confused as this sort of problem doesn't usually happen.

I'm running Tiger 10.4.11 and I want to install Leopard. The Leopard disc image is 6.66GB.

I can't burn it to a DVD either because the discs I have are 4.7GB & the .dmg is 6.66GB. Do I need to buy a bigger DVD blank disc?

Another question is how I should burn the disc. Should I simply burn the .dmg file straight onto a DVD (if I can get one that is big enough!) using Disc Utility?

Software :: Unable To Open Dmg File - Moved To External Hard Disk
I created an image of an external hard drive to back it up, then I checked it and it opened fine. I moved the file to another drive and initialized the original drive and dropped the dmg file back onto the drive. Now it won't open. I really need the files on that drive. Is there any way at all to open it if even for a short time to retrieve the files?

ITunes :: Unable To Copy Folder From External Hard Drive "file In Use"?
I am trying to copy my iTunes folder from one external hard drive to another external hard drive but I keep getting an error message "unable to copy because file (song name) is in use". It starts copying for a while but keeps stopping when the error message pops up.  No songs are playing so I am not sure why it says certain song files are in use.

OS X Leopard :: Unable To Copy Folders From External Hard Drive
I pluged in my external hard drive Maxtor OneTOuch 4 Plus and it did a time machine backup on the Maxtor OneTOuch 4 Plus. The folder that was generated by the time machine on my external hard drive has the name backups.backupdb. Then, i decided to return the Macbook and bought a Macbook Pro. When I pluged the same external hard drive, Maxtor OneTOuch 4 Plus, although I am able to access and open individual files and folders, I am not able to copy neither any nor all the folders from my external hard drive to my new Macbook Pro. Moreover, I am able to access/open the files located in my external hard drive but when try to copy specific files from this drive to my Macbook Pro I get the following error message: Sorry the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error ocurred (Error code -50). Now, here is where it gets interesting: after 2 failed attempts to copy files from my external hard drive to my Macbook Pro desktop and receiving the above error message I am then able to copy the specific file (singular). This would mean that to copy the files and folders in the external hard drive i would need to do it on a one by one basis? If so, it would take forever.

OS X :: 30GB Of Space Disappears On External Drive After Failed DMG Copy?
I have a 298.1 GB external Western Digital hard drive connected to my iMac by a USB 2.0 cable. It is formatted in NTFS-3G so I can use it with both my PC and Mac. Yesterday in Disk Utility I created a 50GB 256-bit encrypted DMG and told Disk Utility to save it on a folder in my external drive. It got to about 20GB and then my house's power went out. A few hours later when the power came back on, I turned on my computer, and the available space on my external hard drive went down from about 100GB to 68.21GB.

The first thing I thought was that the DMG transfer ended prematurely so I should just find and delete the incomplete DMG from the hard drive. So I went to the folder I saved it in and it was not there. I checked all the folders and I couldn't find any DMG in there. Then I went to the root of the external drive and used Get Info to find the space each folder took up. It adds up to 194.12 GB. So I subtracted 194.12 from 298.1 and got 103.98. If I'm supposed to have 103.98 GB, why do I only have 68.21 GB available? I double and triple checked the size of everything on the disk and I still should have about 30GB more than I do. The 30GB just disappeared.

I'm fairly confident that the files are still there and only the  table information got overwritten, as the re-format took about 30 seconds.  None of the  recovery software I've seen however, can retrieve .dmg files, or such large files (these are up to 32 gb each in size).how I can retrieve these disk image files?

OS X Leopard :: Incomplete File Copy From External NTSF Drive To FAT Drive
I recently made the switch to a new MacBook Pro and I'm attempting to copy the files from my old NTSF external drive to a new external FAT drive. The old Seagate NTSF drive is connected directly to my MacBook via USB 2.0 and the new Iomega FAT drive is connected to my MacBook via firewire 800. The ultimate goal is to hook the new FAT drive up to my airport extreme and use it as a network drive.

When copying the files from my old drive to the new drive, one particular folder won't completely copy. About 75 gb of the 125 gb total gets copied before I get the MAC error message 50. I've tried the cp copy and CpMac copy described elsewhere in apple support to no avail. There doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason regarding which subfolders and files get copied and which ones don't. Nothing in the console is jumping out at me either to shed any light on the issue.

I'm using a macbook and would like to copy over several games over to my friend's external harddrive. The files are rather large -8gigs, 6gigs, 4gigs.

For some reason it wont allow me to copy the files to the HD. only prompting me with the message "the operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 0)".

I presume that it's formatted correctly because I was able to copy a smaller file (363megs) without any troubles. However, whenever it involves these large torrents it prompts me with that same message.

OS X :: Cannot Copy Data To External USB Hard Drive
Macbook pro 13' running 10.5.8 has intermittent issues with usb 2.0 mass storage drives but not jump drives. Here is the issue, my gf just got a brand new mac book pro 13'. This is great for her no more asking to use my unibody macbook. She plugs in the drive I have used for a very long time with my mac my pac etc. with not a hint of issue. The drive shows up copy's stuff off ok. However when it came time to return the data back to the drive it gets about 10% through and just hangs. Here is what I have done. I first thought ok might need a reboot. Then I went with the ok I will check her disk for issues. This is a 3 day old mac book by the way. I found random permissions errors with quick time which has never been run. After the fix the issue goes away for that boot.

The issues seems to come back after a re-boot or so. I go ok enough of this I format the mac with the system disk, then I update to the latest updates from apple. Plug in the drive and still having issues. Run the permissions repair same issues exactly format to format. I have also run the deep test off the system disk the machine checks out through that so I have ruled out ram on her system as a possible culprit. I am at a loss on this machine. I have gone so far as to format the external drive replace the data from my network server and try that. Still no luck. On my box there is no issue it time machines great it copy's data like a usb 2.0 drive should.

OS X :: External Hard Drive Error Code (-50) When Copy The Files
I have an external 2TB Western Digital Caviar drive hooked up to my 2006 iMac through a docking bay and USB 2.0. I'm running 10.6.6 and the drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended. It's my media and backup drive and I'm always copying stuff to and from it. All was well and good with the setup and I had no problems for probably 5 or 6 months. Just around Christmas, though, I started getting alerts when trying to copy files over to the drive. Error Code: -50.

Basically, I can still view/read files on the drive and play songs in iTunes, but if I try to rip a CD, iTunes hangs and dies. If I try to copy any file over using the Finder or empty the trash with files from that drive, I get the -50 code and alert. A restart will fix the problem for a little while but then it's back after maybe 30 minutes or so that's obviously not a good long-term solution. This page claims it is an "Error in user parameter list" but I have no idea what that means. I've done a bunch of Googling, but people are saying it's anything from problems with networked NTFS drives (which it's not for me) or that it's a disk permissions issue (no bootable system on the drive).

OS X :: External Hard Drive Format - Mount On Pc - Copy More That 4 Gig
Alright, so My ipod is formatted for windows when formatted in this you can only copy chunks of 4 gig things using it as an external. but if you change the formatt of it to take all sizes, then it's not compatible with mac and pc. =/ i had it originally formatted for pc because i just recently got a mac book pro and it's my primary computer. well on to the hard drive trouble that is related i'm borrowing my friends external to get a 8 gig file from my pc to my mac. it's formatted in fat32(windows and mac read) but that format only allows for a 4 gig max to be put on it at one time. so i guess i'm outta luck there, i've looked at JR split but who knows it that will work. My main q is, i'm going to be getting my own personal external soon and i want to know whats the best way to format it that it will mount on my pc and my mac and allow me to copy more that 4 gigs of stuff on it at a time.

MacBook :: Can't Copy Files To External Hard Drive
I have had both my MacBook and external hard drive for over three years now, and have never had a problem. In the last week, my external hard drive stopped letting me copy files onto it. When you try to drag and drop it just comes up with the blocked symbol. I have tested this with other hard drives as well and keep getting the same error. I've read other forums where it seems the answer is just to reformat the hard drive to the correct format, but I've never had a problem before so it seems strange that the format would just suddenly change.

OS X :: Carbon Copy Clone - Size / Brand External Hard Drive
I have a MacBook from Christmas 2009. I'm very happy with it. I am using an external HD, a Western Digital Passport with 500 GB for my Time Machine backups. The MacBook seems to have a 250GB hard drive, but no firewire connection. So far I have used up about half of my WD Passport external with Time Machine backups. I have about 6500 photos and almost 12GB of iTunes music, and I don't want a catastrophic failure to cause me to lose it all. In addition to the Time Machine backup, I'm considering using Carbon Copy Clone with an additional external hard drive for a complete backup. I'm not very Mac or programming savvy, so I'm looking for an idiot proof method. What do you guys think of CCC, and what size/brand external HD do you recommend? I think CCC has to have an HFS+ formatted drive. I don't want to keep it connected all the time, but I would like to occasionally clone the MacBook harddrive so I always have a fairly current bootable backup.

here comes the question. the drive has all my apps and personal bits which i dont want to loose or reinstall. do i simply drag the applications across on to my new machine? primally interested in iphoto and itunes. will i loose these music files and 4 years of photos?, or can i navigate into the app on the hard drive and drag the files into the new itunes/iphotos on the new machine?
