OS X :: Wireless Broadband - Time Capsule And USB Modem

Jan 17, 2010

I have recently moved house and no longer have access to a DSL / ADSL line but have successfully plugged a wireless USB modem (ZTE MF688+) into my desktop PC. I have a mac book pro and a time capsule which were previously networked but I don't know how to access the internet as there is no DSL cable to plug into the time capsule. Is there any way to use the Time Capsule to access the internet without plugging a DSL / ADSL cable in?

Hardware :: Dsl Modem Bridge To Time Capsule

Sep 2, 2010

I have a Motorola dsl modem that I got from AT&T. I have a Time Capsule that I am hooking the modem up to, so that I can have a wireless network and backup. I understand that I need to set the modem to bridging mode (or so AT&T tells me) but when I do so I don't have any idea what settings to use for the TC when setting it up in Airport Utilities. I need some help since AT&T wants $50 to help me with my "third party equipment."

Hardware :: Time Capsule - Linksys Modem

Aug 9, 2009

Usually I am pretty good with this sort of thing but this one has me stumped. Right now I have set up my Linksys AM200 to do all the work and my Time Capsule to broadcast the network in bridged mode. However as I understand, using bridged mode prevents you from sharing the hard drive in the Time Capsule with MobileMe so I can access it over the internet. Does anyone have any experience who could help me switch things around? I have tried but then it does not work. I would need to have the modem bridge to the Time Capsule which would be doing all the work. Right now my modem is set up using RFC 2364 PPPoA. I see that there is a bridged mode only and RFC 1483 bridged. I believe that I should be using some kind of bridged mode. I also searched the forum and saw that it needed to be half-bridged. What would that be?

Hardware :: 2wire Modem And Time Capsule

Feb 22, 2010

I am enjoying the magic of watching the hours get sucked into the networking hole. Maybe someone can save me. I have a 2wire 2701-HGB modem on ATT. I have it as my router and modem over wifi and wired. I just bought the Time Capsule, and my plan is to have the TC be my router; as well as extend my network since there is crappy coverage in my house. I can get the TC to join a network; but when trying to create a network, things get messed up. There seem to be differing reports about whether you can use the TC to bridge the 2wire network. Something about WDS and whether 2Wire supports that. I'm under the impression that so long as I turn off the router capability in my 2wire; as well as the wireless; and connect the TC to the 2wire with an ethernet -- the TC can be my wireless router. And as a noob, what I mean when I say this is that I am thinking my TC will create the network, and talk to the modem, handout the IP addresses and whatnot...the 2wire will just provide the pipe out? .......

Hardware :: Time Capsule And Speed Stream Modem

Jan 10, 2011

I purchased an airport express a while ago. After getting help to set it up through Apple, I started noticing that my internet connection would drop EVERY night between 8:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. - signal drops for anywhere from 5 min to 20 min several times. It appears to be okay during the day. I am an ATT user with their modem, a speed stream 5100. The power, ethernet, and dsl light say lit with the internet light flashing. After having this problem for about a month, I called ATT who sent out a technician. He said all was fine. It happened again the same evening. This was in mid-December. I purchase a time capsule as I decided the express may be faulty and didn't have time to return to an apple store. I am having the same problems. Internet fine during the day and drops in the evening. Could my modem be the problem? I have called ATT again as well as Apple and they all think it is hooked up correctly. If modem is bad, what should I buy to work with the time capsule?

Hardware :: Using Time Capsule Instead Of Cable Modem/router?

I currently have a wireless network set-up through Comcast. I have a Netgear modem/router from Comcast. I just purchased Time Capsule and I would prefer to use TC as my wireless network router instead of the Netgear modem/router. MacBook Pro :: Battery And Usb Broadband Modem

Jun 8, 2010

got my mbp 15 i5 last week, ive been testing my battery, already recalibrated and all that.. i get 8+ hours on full charge on idle.. pretty average on normal use, around 5-6 hours. anyways so while i was testing my battery, i decided to unplug my usb broadband modem to see how much battery it's draining from my laptop. but to my surprise my battery life went down from approximately 3 hours left, to 2 and half ! i even waited 5 minutes so it can properly calculate it, but it didnt increase. so my question is wuzzup widat?! shouldnt it be the other way around? i was planning on canceling my wireless broadband contract when it expires and just wirelessly tether my newly jailbroken iphone via mywi for internet access, but its seems like wifi is a minus on the battery, but usb modems are actually a plus.

i know Internet Service Providers give away modem or routers these day but wouldn't be best if Apple made an Airport Extreme or Time Capsule with a built-in modems? if you check people questions on apple.com you will see have half of them want to know how to switch off the wireless connection on their Linksys and let Airport Extreme do that and the other half doesn't even know what Airport Extreme is for i know Apple has a habit of getting rid of stuff but anyone else agree this will drive Airport Extreme sales up? it would be the ultimate connection device for macs and no need for additional router.

Hardware :: Adding AirPort Extreme / Express With Broadband Modem?

Feb 10, 2009

I am finally jumping on the WiFi bandwagon at home - I know my macs pretty well but need advice at this wireless stuff...

1) I currently have a broadband modem that came with my BT broadband account - am I right I do not need to change this - just add an airport extreme/express to it?

2) What should I be considering when I am choosing between express/extreme? is extreme just longer range? I live in a 2 bed flat on 1 floor..

3) I would like to add some storage to this airport so I can store my itunes music on it and have it accessible to my laptop when I come in the house with it - I see airport extreme has a usb port - but is this USB2? if only usb1 then that would be very slow - what's the best way of adding wireless network storage (something like a firewire/usb2 drive like the drobo) to my wireless network?

4) - I am thinking about getting an apple tv - does extreme/express decision make any difference in this regard?

5) - If I want to run itunes through my main stereo - do I need to get a separate airport express for that? (Stereo and broadband modem are in different rooms in the flat) and does my laptop then work as itunes server, sending music from the storage attached to the airport extreme, to the express attached to the stereo?

6) - I see many people use a mac mini in systems like this - what are the advantages of having a separate mac mini added to the system to act as a media server as opposed to just using my laptop?

7) - If am am attaching media storage to a WiFi network - how do I make sure it is secure?

OS X :: Stream Music From Time Capsule To Mac Mini / Hookup Mini To Time Capsule Via USB

Jul 19, 2009

I am planning on purchasing a mac mini solely for the purpose of playing music - it will be hooked up to a hi-fi amplifier and speakers. All of the music that will be on the computer will be in lossless format, which is very large. I will need a lot (320+ GB?) of storage.

I'm wondering if I can cut costs by buying an old 80 GB mini and augmenting its hard drive with a time capsule. I was planning on buying a time capsule anyway, so I could save something like $300. My questions are: would I be able to stream music from the time capsule to the mac mini? Would I be able to import music from itunes directly onto the time capsule? If I hook the mini up to the time capsule via USB, can it serve as a hard-drive, even if my internet is down? Is it going to be much more worth my time to buck up and buy a new 320 GB mini?

Hardware :: Can Time Machine Backup External Drive Attached To Time Capsule?

Is it possible to have time machine backup all information on the 500gb drive to the time capsule, so encase the external drive takes a dump, I don't loose my entire music library? Maybe time machine is already doing this, I am not sure.

Hardware :: Time Machine/Time Capsule/Airport Extreme With Verizon FIOS?

Nov 10, 2009

I will be getting my new Macbook Pro in the near future and am very interested in using Time Machine to wireless back up my data to an external hard drive. I know I can use Time Capsule to do this, but also hear a mention of just getting an Airport Extreme and my own ext. hd. My question is that I have Verizon FIOS Internet and my modem also functions as a wireless router. How would the Time Capsule/Airport Extreme work with this? Is it possible? I do not believe that the Verizon router supports wireless N, and I would like to take advantage of the faster speeds. If I were to connect a Airport Extreme to the wireless router, would I then have 2 routers to choose from and just use the Airport Extreme to use the wireless N? I'm very confused as to how I could make this work.

Hardware :: Time Capsule Vs Base Station - External Drive For Time Machine

Jan 11, 2010

As my 160N series Linksys router neither has gigabit ports, usb connector or dual band networking, I am looking for a replacement.

When it comes to Apple routers I am looking at 2 options - either the base station with an external USB drive or get a 1TB capsule with the buildt in drive and worries regarding reliability.

What I like about the Time Capsule is that it is neat to have all in one, takes up less space and only has 1 plug to attach, while Iike the idea that I can just connect a bigger drive later on the base station solution.

1. Will the connected USB drive function just like the internal drive in the Time Capsule for Time Machine use?

2. Will everything be transparent to Snow Leopard?

3. In case of both units with an attached USB drive - can I control who actually can see the drive and access it?

4. Do they support this DNLA thing so that e.g . PS3 can access an attached drive??

Hardware :: Connect To Time Capsule While Connecting To Wifi Network At Same Time?

Sep 22, 2009

I recently purchased a Time Capsule to use as a wireless hard drive. I connect to the internet both through wifi and ethernet to a educational network that does not allow extra routers, etc, to be added to the network, therefore I can not use the time capsule for this wifi.

I therefore want to connect to my early 2009 MBP17unibody to both the academic internet network for http/pop3/ftp/etc while simultaneously connecting to external hard drive to store data/itunes-library/etc.

I expect this has been asked before but I can't find any threads where it has. If anyone knows it would be highly helpful. I'd prefer to connect to both wirelessly but I could potentially put up with connecting to either or both with ethernet.

OS X Mountain Lion :: Time Machine Can't Complete Backup To Time Capsule

Jun 19, 2014

MacBook Pro mid-2012, 8GB RAM, 750GB hard drive, Mac OS X 10.8.5

One Time Capsule at home

One Time Capsule in vacation home

MBP backs up everything on internal hard drive to Time Capsule at home, where we live during summer and spring. When moving to vacation home in fall and winter, MBP backs up everything to Time Capsule in vacation home.

During the 6 months at each residence, the backups work great to the Time Capsule at that particular house. However, after some time (maybe a week?), Time Machine displays an error in Notification Center: "Time Machine can't complete backup to Home Time Capsule" (when in vacation home) or "Time Machine can't complete backup to Vacation Time Capsule" (when at home).

It's obvious that this occurs because Time Machine was set to back up to 2 Time Capsules and expects both of them to be reachable. Is there a way to suppress these Time Machine errors for the time that we're away from one of the Time Capsules?

OS X :: 10.6.1 Update Destroyed Time Capsule / Time Machine Setup

Sep 15, 2009

Ever since I updated to 10.6.1 I've had the following problems:

- Time Machine does not work at all with my Time Capsule. When it attempts to back up my data, Time Machine gets hung up with a status of "Making backup disk available..." and the icon in the menu bar just spins forever (the status appears in the menu bar icon's menu). I also cannot enter Time Machine; it gets hung trying to connect to the Time Capsule and I have to cancel it. Finder then takes up 100% CPU and I have to power down by holding in the power button (shutting down from the Apple menu doesn't work).

- I store my iTunes library in a folder called Music under the Data folder on the Time Capsule. When I open iTunes, it prompts me to choose my iTunes library. When I do, it starts to load the list of albums, then iTunes locks up and I must force quit it. This also causes my machine to not be able to shut down or restart from the Apple menu.

Oddly enough I can still access the Data folder from Finder with no issues. I just wanted to put this out there in case other people are having similar problems. It's pretty frustrating as all this worked fine before the 10.6.1 update.

OS X :: Time Machine / Wireless Modem Stopped Hard Drive From Mounting

Feb 14, 2010

why I tryed using their wireless service, which would seem screwed my Hard drive. I installed a small application from Telstra (main telecommunications company in Australia) that allows you to connect via a USB modem to the internet wirelessly. After completing the installation, it prompted me to restart and I did so. However, before it shut down a dialogue came up saying it had to clear/reset the system cache or something like that. I clicked ok (only thing i could do) and my computer restart as normal and I had internet. The problems started when my time machine tried to backup; where it stopped while "preparing to backup" and came up with an error dialogue saying something like Time failed because it couldn't find the directory. I restarted my mac once more without the USB modem attached and tried the backup again, whereby i new error came saying it couldn't mount the drive. One more restart later and I now have a Time Machine that doesn't backup or see prior backups, and a Hard Drive that not only can't be mounted but isn't recognised as even a Media device by Disc Utilities.

Hardware :: Time Machine/Time Capsule Never Finishes

Feb 10, 2010

I recently bought a 500 TC and after a lot messing around i have the thing working, well near working, perfect.

The problem is, everytime it does a back up, which sometimes it has nothing to back up, it never finishes the job. In the end all i get is time machine giving me the "finishing back up" remark but the dam thing never actually finishes.

I have left it in the above state for sometimes hours just to see of it would finish and alas no joy!! Also, if i try and do anything else on my Macbook, while time machine is working, the "beach ball of death" apears and freezes my computer. Hence, everytime my Mac backs up i have to crash my computer which is annoying to say the least.

I did a lot of reading around various problems when using time machine and TC but can't find any solutions but lots of problems. TC is the worst apple product i've ever brought, it's been nothing but up hill trying to get this thing to work just like it says on the box.

I'm wondering whether its the TC or simply that time machine doesn't like my computer for some reason.
