OS X :: Unable To Use MacBook Keyboard - How To Fix It
Mar 17, 2010
I did a password reset on my Macbook by using this process:
1. Reboot
2. Hold apple + s down after you hear the chime.
3. When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting
return after each line):
mount -uw /
rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
reboot
Everything went smoothly and it brought me back to the welcome screen where your supposed to create your account and what not. But went I tried to type into the input fields (name, address, email etc.), it wouldnt type anything. Every time I try to type it would make a noise as if it knows im trying to type but nothing shows up.
Seems as if the keyboard is locked or something. I know that the keyboard works because it worked fine before I did the reset n plus when I reboot hold apple+s, I can type in the terminal just fine. With that being said, does anyone know how to unlock my keyboard?

I've just bought a Mac mini to use as a media centre, and I picked up the Apple wireless keyboard and mouse while I was at it. It wasn't until I got home that I read the "requirements" section on the side of the mouse and keyboard boxes, where it states that an existing keyboard and mouse are needed for setup.
I have a USB mouse, but no keyboard (my other Mac is a MBP), and nowhere to borrow one from (all my friends have laptops).

My keyboard backlight isn't working... whenever I try to turn it up it gives a circle with a line through it. I have read that there is an ambient light sensor that turns off the keyboard backlight when it is too bright, however that has NEVER happened before and I have used it in direct sunlight and the backlight still obviously works. It's not even bright right now but it won't work. This is very frustrating, there should be no sensor that turns it off it should be the brightness I tell it to be.

Just got home and opened my MBP and cannot get it to come out of sleep mode. On top of that the keyboard is not responding, I've tested the caps lock button and all and no response. Everything was working perfectly fine 2 hours ago. I can hear it running and I've tried do a hard restart but I keep getting a black screen and no keyboard response. The only light that is on would be the light in the switch to open and close the MBP.

In SysPref I found the < Illuminate Under Low Light > button.
I can see the backlight has come on , but it is not at all bright. At least it is nowhere near as bright when compared to a 13" MBP we own. Is there an " Intensity " setting for the keyboard backlight?

so I got my MBP last week. It's the 15" base unibody model. Is there any way to have the computer setup to automatically turn on the backlight keyboard using ac power? Then do the opposite using the battery?

I have a first gen 13 inch MacBook aluminum. It was dropped on the corner a few months ago but has preformed fine ever since. I have been using it up until yesterday without a problem. Although yesterday I noticed the airport wireless icon was reporting and exclamation point icon and it was having trouble finding and connecting to networks my iPhone was connecting without a problem. Today I boot up and the boot time is very slow and sometimes hangs.
It takes 10 minutes to get to the login screen and when it does I can move the mouse but the keyboard won't respond. So I can't type my password to login. The mouse moves but when I click a button nothing happens. I booted in safe mode and off the os x disk with the same issue. However I used key commands to do that and selected a boot disk using the keyboard and the mouse to do that so I know the work. Can I bypass my loginscreen somehow? I'm most concerned about my data and I plane to get a hard drive first thing tomorrow.

it only illuminates in bright settings. if its dark, it wont illuminate. seems backwards to me, why is it doing this? i dont think it was last night when i first got it.
first macbook pro had a blemish on it. now this one the keyboard isnt backlighting correctly.
just read to put my hand over the webcam and it seemed to kick it back into gear. but then it dies and only takes bright settings to illuminate.
edit: maybe its hitting the sensor (some light from the window at a weird area) in a darker room and it works fine i think.

i have had a 13" Macbook pro for around a year now, and i never really noticed that it didnt have a backlight on the keyboard until my mom bought a 17" one (what a biter, amirite?) and it had the awesome backlight. I've tried researching this and i've downloaded labtick and it doesn't work.
Edit: I've also never spilled anything on the keyboard or anywhere. It's been like this since purchase

When I try to select this option in system preferences, my system just hangs indefinitely. I was considering getting the four finger gestures up and running, but I had only thought about it and did not actually start doing anything to the computer. Maybe they are reading my mind and punishing me? It has been like this for a couple of days through multiple reboots.

The backlight still lights up behind the keyboard but only brightly in a V shape in the middle of the keyboard, the rest of it is very dim.
This happened to me a while back and I just got the laptop back the other day. They had put in a new keyboard (along with a new hard drive and optical drive - but those are another story).
Just now, my backlight came on since I turned off the room's main light and turned on a small lamp and lo and behold...the backlight is messed up again! Same as it was before, I know for a fact it was working earlier today.
All I've done is change the ram and use migration assistant to get a couple things over. I'm not sure how I could have damaged the light by taking out the 3 screws for the ram door...I didn't put barely any pressure on them. I'm not sure if either of those two things caused it but I'm shocked.
Now I have to give up my computer again. Nearest apple store is over an hour, it was 3 weeks last time I gave my computer up (gave it to school's IT crew, who forwards it to apple - but I get a loaner this way).

There is a strange thing happening with my iMac. I have a Core Duo 2.0 GHz with 2GB of RAM. I'm now using the most recent Apple USB keyboard with the chicklet keys.
I no longer can boot off a DVD or CD using this keyboard. Let's say I insert the install disk or the restore disk and hold down C or D, whichever is appropriate. Instead of starting off the disk, it simply reboots.
I also can't zap PRAM because of this nor can I start off an external HD. I have tried a Logitech diNovo keyboard and some goofy iHome keyboard and the same thing occurs.
All my software is updated and I'm using 10.6.3

My iMac recently shows a "low battery" warning on the keyboard batteries.
The iMac's hard drive had just been fixed by a shop and the OS re-installed. To my surprise I didn't need to do anything to get it to recognize both bluetooth keyboard and mouse - it just worked! Wow.
Until yesterday. I took out the keyboard batteries, charged them, and put them back in.
Now I get the login prompt where I have to enter a password. The only problem is, I can't enter a password without a keyboard! And it doesn't recognize the keyboard.
I tested the keyboard with my MacBook Pro - it works just fine. So I believe that somehow the iMac thinks it's still paired with the keyboard, while the keyboard knows nothing about this. And between those two things it doesn't work.
I restarted multiple times, and tried to start from another partition by holding down option - the problem is the iMac doesn't recognize the keyboard at startup either.
