OS X :: Unable To Install Snow Leopard / After Five Minutes Machine Re-starts

Jul 13, 2009

I've been trying to install various builds of snow leopard on my mac pro with no success (latest is 10a380). I start the installer, choose an install partition, click on 'install', the install window comes up, telling me the installation should take 'around 45 minutes'.

It copies a load of files to the hard drive, then about five minutes later the machine re-starts, and I am dumped back into my normal leopard installation. If I look at the discs I'm installing to I see a 'Mac OS X. install data' folder containing a lot of .pkgs, and that's as far as it ever progresses.

I've tried booting up directly from the install DVD, and this never works either: it always dumps me back into my normal leopard installation. All the disks I've been trying to install to are GUID formatted, permissions repaired, etc.Anyone got any ideas what can be going on?

IMac :: Unable To Install Clean Snow Leopard / Instructions To Install On Internal Drive?

Dec 20, 2009

The internal hard drive on my early 2009 iMac is being replaced but I have to reinstall Snow Leopard myself.I did search in MRoogle and at Apple and cannot seem to find instructions on how to perform a clean Snow Leopard install on an iMac internal HD.

Can I do this? And if so how? Or do you think I should try and install Leopard on the existing Hd in the iMac? I still have these discs but have to get the SL applications install disc out of my drive (it's stuck and the iMac won't boot past the blue screen).

OS X :: Snow Leopard Clean Install With Time Machine?

Aug 30, 2009

am thinking about doing a clean install of Snow Leopard, but was wondering about the use of Time Machine in the Migration Assistant after it's re-installed. I have a lot of music, documents, apps etc (probably around 70-80gb) on my Time Machine backup that I would need to re-install. When you choose Time Machine in the migration assistant, does it let you choose what to pull off the Time Machine, or does it just take everything?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Unable To Install Bootcamp?

May 27, 2012

I have a mid-2007 MacBook Pro, model A1226, with 4GB RAM.  The optical drive has always been a little off, in that CD's written using the MacBook Pro sometimes can't be read on other systems, but it's never had problems reading CDs/DVDs.  When I had Fusion installed on this machine I was able to install Windows XP and Windows 7 using the optical drive.

I want to do a Bootcamp install of Windows, either XP or 7.  I have two original WinXP Pro SP2 installation disks (retail, not OEM) and one set of original Win7 Ultimate installation disks, again retail.

I did a clean install of Snow Leopard after reformatting (erasing) the hard disk, and ran software update.  Then I ran Boot Camp Assistant and created a bootcamp partition.  When I insert an installation disk and click on Start..., after a moment it ejects the disk.  Over and over.  I repeated this many times, with all of the install disks, and the results were the same.

Except once, and only once, it actually started installing WinXP.  Per the instructions I had WinXP format the bootcamp partition, but the install hung near the end where it was trying to save settings.  Apparently this is a common scenario that some people think is related to having a USB keyboard and mouse connected, but it still hung for me even if I connected a wired keyboard and mouse.

Lots of reports of similar problems on the web, and I tried a number of suggestions I found here and elsewhere, including:Attached an external DVD drive.  The install DVD doesn't get ejected, but I still get the folder/question mark and failure to reboot for all the installation DVDs.  I suspect that my model MBP doesn't handle booting from external optical drives very well, if at all.  Make copies of the install DVDs.  Although the copies seem to work the same as the originals on my iMac, they produce the same results using both internal and external optical drives.Made a number of different bootable USB sticks, but never found a way to have the required guid partition table at the same time as the Windows boot image, so they weren't bootable on my MacBook Pro.Installed rEFIt and tried using that to boot from USB (still not recognized as a bootable device) and from internal and external drives containing the original or copied installation DVDs. Still get the folder/question mark icon.

Generally after clicking on Start Installation the system won't boot from the internal drive, but sometimes holding Option works; other times it just refuses to boot until I've tried it multiple times or booted from the Snow Leopard install disk and adjusted the boot record.

Supposedly listening to the drive and tapping on the case works, but not for me.  I haven't yet tried loosening the mounting brackets because I'm still looking for a T6 driver, but that's another common suggestion.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Unable To Recover Time Machine Files?

Mar 23, 2012

I'm running Time Machine on a Western Digital network storage device from my iMac.  It works fine.  I can go back any amount of time and recover files as they were backed up then.  But I also want to be able to depend on Time Machine backups to allow me to recover files if my iMac goes down.  So just as a test, I tried to use the Browse Other Time Machine Disks feature from my MacBook Air.  I can't make it work.  It shows me a Choose Time Machine Disk to Browse window, but there are no disks in the choose pane.

People have been telling me that I have to "mount" the volume, but I see no way to do so.  Clicking Go - Connect to Server - Browse, shows me that the backup disk is there; it's called <mydiscname>-backup.  But when I try to connect to it I get an immediate connection failure.

I'm beginning to suspect that there is no way to restore from another computer when the Time Machine backups are on a network storage device?  If this is true, people need to know it and stop using network storage for Time Machine, as it won't be safe if their principal Mac goes down.

Intel Mac :: Damaged Install Disk For Snow Leopard, Restore From Time-machine?

Jun 19, 2012

I got SMART warning about my hard disk, I got it replaced by a shop, but said I would do OS restore myself. (cant afford cost )Thought it would be simple - but it is anything but.  It appears my install DVD is damaged, so was not able to boot with Grey OS install disk - holding the C key.I managed to get iMac to boot up using the old disk  - using firewire dock. However I was not able to restore old disk and OS to new disk, Due to IO read error.(this is why I had the SMART warning). So I am unable to get the OS on the new HD using the old disk or the DVD as these are both damaged.  The computer is running, so I thought I would try buying and downloading LION - then using the migration tool .  The download is still running after 2 days.I went to apple store, and was told that they cannot replace DVD , so I should bring in the iMac = and pay for the restore.  Dont wish to do this. As I have the computer and OS running, is there anything I can do to get a time machine restore from another backup disk (USB).

Applications :: Clean Install Of Snow Leopard - Time Machine & Carbon Copy Cloner?

Oct 19, 2010

I just did a clean install of Snow Leopard on my older macbook. I did not specifically back up my itunes purchases, however, I did do several Time Machine back ups as well as manually moving data via Finder (copy "Macintosh HD" and paste to folder on external), and finally a clone using CarbonCopyCloner. I wanted to start fresh, but I failed to think of my iTunes purchases, as well as iPhone app purchases/downloads. Is there some way I can specifically restore iTunes from the back up without having to restore from a TimeMachine backup?

OS X :: Unable To Install Snow Leopard / MacBook Was Asleep And Got Old Login Screen

Aug 29, 2009

I upgraded my Mini no problem, then I put the install disk in my MacBook and started the upgrade. All appeared normal.

Came back about an hour later, and the MacBook was asleep. Woke it, expecting to see the new login screen, but I got the old login screen. Logged in, and did not see the welcome movie or anything to indicate the new OS. Checked 'About This Mac', and it says OS 10.5.8.

Before I started the upgrade I had about 11.5GB free on my 80GB hard drive. Now I have just short of 10GB free. There is a folder on my HD titled 'Mac OS X Install Data' with a 'date modified' of today (all other folders have older dates) -- it appears to be mostly .pkg files, the biggest of which are 'Essentials.pkg' (841MB) and 'BaseSystem.pkg' (625MB).

Can anyone tell what went wrong -- why when the computer restarted it's not running 10.6? And, maybe more importantly, what should I do now? Run the installer disk again? Could it be that I didn't have enough free space on my HD?

OS X :: Unable To Backup With Time Machine / Snow Leopard Cannot Locate Network Drive

Apr 20, 2010

So I have a 15" MBP running Snow Leopard and have recently installed a Western Digital MyBook 1TB World Edition on the network to serve as my Time Machine backup drive. Most of the time, it works flawlessly and OSX / Time Machine does its thing and backs up.

Every once in a while, Time Machine says backup has been delayed because it cannot locate the network drive. This when I can easily access the network drive from other machines on the network, and also from my MBP in Finder. It's just Time Machine that somehow fails to find that drive. When I enter Time Machine preferences and look for the drive, it brings it up immediately and asks me for the username and pwd and viola ... it's up and running again.
