Intel Mac :: Time Machine Appear To Be Gone From Before Install Date

Jun 17, 2012

I just finished using time machine to recover my iMac after putting in a new HD. Everything worked perfectly but now the contents of the time machine appear to be gone from before the install date. This is kind of concerning since one never knows whats missing until it's needed.

OS X :: Time Machine Backup Out Of Date

Dec 10, 2010

I've had time machine running for about 10 months. Today I needed to rely on it for the first time to restore a MySQL database I deleted by accident. To my horror the last backup in Time Machine was six months out of date even though I work on this database every day! I've completely lost faith in it and I'm feeling really let down. Is this a common problem? Have I got a setting wrong or is Time Machine just a complete waste of time?

OS X :: Delete All Time Machine Backups Before A Certain Date?

Nov 30, 2008

So I'm in the process of fixing up an old Power Mac Dual G4 MDD for my Dad. I'm installing all the software he'll use, setting all the pref panes, etc... I've turned on Time Machine, and when I give him the computer for Xmas I'd like for there to not be remnants of this setting up process. Right before I shut off the computer for the last time before giving it to him, how would I delete all of the old backups and just leave the "current" backup?

OS X :: Using Time Machine To Migrate Date Between Macs?

Apr 9, 2009

I'm still fairly new to the Mac world. I know I wouldn't want to take an Windows image of a hard drive from a dell laptop and restore it to an Hp desktop or any mis-matching like that due to hardware and driver differences. But I was wondering if it is OK to use my time machine backups of my Macbook Air and restore that to an iMac that is on its way. I am actually selling the Macbook Air once I have the iMac set up and running smooth. I could easily copy my documents, pictures, etc. And I could export my bookmarks and settings with Firefox, but I would prefer to not have reinstall all the apps I have, all the plugins in Firefox, and all the settings I have the way I like in OS X.

So I am looking for advice on the best method for migration to a different computer. Is Time Machine my best bet?

MacBook Pro :: Restore To Earlier Date Without Using Time Machine?

Jun 18, 2012

I logged in to my Mac a couple of days ago and it said it was restore to some weird date. It does not appear anything changed, but now when I am trying to download a Sims game (don't judge me lol) it won't download saying there is no Internet connection even though there is. Is there anyone to restore the system to a date that I know it was working properly without using time machine? I never bought an external drive so my time machine is not set up.

Intel Mac :: Damaged Install Disk For Snow Leopard, Restore From Time-machine?

Jun 19, 2012

I got SMART warning about my hard disk, I got it replaced by a shop, but said I would do OS restore myself. (cant afford cost )Thought it would be simple - but it is anything but.  It appears my install DVD is damaged, so was not able to boot with Grey OS install disk - holding the C key.I managed to get iMac to boot up using the old disk  - using firewire dock. However I was not able to restore old disk and OS to new disk, Due to IO read error.(this is why I had the SMART warning). So I am unable to get the OS on the new HD using the old disk or the DVD as these are both damaged.  The computer is running, so I thought I would try buying and downloading LION - then using the migration tool .  The download is still running after 2 days.I went to apple store, and was told that they cannot replace DVD , so I should bring in the iMac = and pay for the restore.  Dont wish to do this. As I have the computer and OS running, is there anything I can do to get a time machine restore from another backup disk (USB).

OS X :: G5 Won't Restart After OSX Install - Date &Time - Applications Not Loading

Mar 30, 2010

My G5 OSX 10.4 on restart displayed the date&time error message (attached). And yes it was causing my applications to run erratically, such as not loading. After updating the time both manually or automatically, on restart time would revert to 1970 with the error message re-appearing. I erased my hard drive tried to install OSX 10.5.1 1st attempt it was unable to locate my hard drive for install location, it simply paused. 2nd attempt it located drive, but during install white page full of errors appeared. 3rd attempt it appeared to install fine. But again on restart the date time error message appeared, time set to 1970. Updating time didn't help. I upgraded OSX 10.5.1, during install it displayed an Update OSX error message (attached). After this error message I restarted but I can't get past the grey loading screen. If it helps here's what im running:

OS X :: Unable To Set Time And Date / Time Date Settings Wrong

Sep 30, 2008

So I shut down my computer earlier today for the first time in weeks. I restarted it and then left for a few hours for dinner.

I come home and I look at the last time MobileMe Sync and Time Machine did their things. They say they did them at 7:45. I look at the clock on my cable box and on my iPhone, both say 6:45.

Weird that the MacBook's time is wrong. I go into Time Date settings. I see that when the MacBook does the "Auto locate where you are so that we can set the appropriate time zone, etc. the MacBook things I'm in Rexford, Idaho.

I haven't been to Idaho in about 25 years, and my MacBook has been sitting in Southern Kalifornia for the last one year since I bought it.I've tried to have the MacBook auto-locate again, and it keeps finding me us in Rexford, idaho.

Software :: Time And Date Gets Corrupted / Unable To Set Date And Time

May 8, 2009

I'm running OSX 10.5.8 on a G4 iBook. Somehow my Time & Date files got corrupted which prevented me from getting on to the internet. When I discovered the problem, I threw them away, thinking a restart would create them again. I was wrong.

Now my computer doesn't know what time or year it is, causing various problems. I don't have back-up 10.5 disks to extract the time & date package. Can I download a replacement anywhere?

Or can someone email the files to me? I don't know what they're called but, if you search time and date, there are only two (and please tell me what folders they're in too)

Intel Mac :: Set A Custom Time & Date Format In The Top Bar?

May 20, 2012

How do I set a custom time & date format in the top bar?

When I go to System Preferences > Language & Text > Formats I can set different formats. I have no idea where you will see these, but I know that it's not the top bar where the time and date is being displayed. Because no matter what I enter, the format in the top bar will stay the same. I can only choose things like 24-Hour clock or not, blinking dots and so on in the Time & Date settings from the System Preferences.

My ideal would be to start from scrach - although I want to keep my itunes and iphotos files as well as my documents. Is there a way to reload back to factory settings then add selected programs and folders from timemachine? I am in the process of timemachine backing up everything now.

Intel Mac :: Time Machine Backups Taking Extremely Long Time Running Lion 10.7.4

Jul 2, 2012

I have an iMac running the latest version of Lion (10.7.4) and which I have upgraded to a one terabyte hard drive and full memory capability. I back up to a My Book 2 terabyte external hard drive using Time Machine. My iMac is often very sticky, though I've done most of the diagnostics I know of and preferences etc. are seemingly all OK and fcuk -fs gives a positive result! The Mac is often hard to wake from sleep and in particular seems to spend a lot of time backing up very-very slowly, with the result that it frustratingly seems to be backing up most of the time with the consequent effects on using other programs. Also the whole thing seems to grind to a halt after a hard days work with quite a few applications open. I'm wondering what can be causing this and what I can do to overcome this very frustrating and debilitating problem?

OS X :: Time Machine Restore After Clean SL Install?

Oct 31, 2009

I'm going to reinstall Snow Leopard from scratch for the 6th time since I bought my MBP, which is a little over a month. Why? Constant freezes, lockups, beach balls (OMG I HATE THOSE DAMN THINGS). So I just want to start fresh... again again again again again again.

My question: if I restore from my Time Machine backup after I install Snow Leopard, what will happen? My SL DVD is 10.6. If I restore, will it go to 10.6.1? How is all of this going to work? I could just start completely clean and manually transfer my files from the Time Machine drive to where they usually are and be happy.

OS X :: Clean Re-install But Restore Files From Time Machine?

Oct 1, 2010

So my hard-drive died. Luckily I have a Time Machine backup of my system. I bought a new HD and tried to restore from the backup. No-go. It complains that it can't restore certain file, so it snorts the restore. I tried an older backup, no help.

So I decided to do a fresh install instead. But once I have OS up & running again, can I restore files from my old Time Machine backup? How does the process work? I'm afraid if I point Time Machone to my old backup, it will overwrite it.

I do have my files backed up manually as well, so I can always copy them by hand. Bit that backup is not as recent as the TM backup.

Hardware :: Time Machine And Mediasmart Server And Install

Jun 15, 2009

I have a couple older PC's and a late 2008 MBP (my first Mac - yes, I am a Mac noob). I use boot camp to run XP on the MBP and decided to use that for the initial set-up of the server. Things were going well until it was updating the server software. It ticked up to 18% and stalled. About 45 minutes later, I (wrongly) figured that I shouldn't have tried to use my MBP and stopped the update. I switched gears and tried to run it on my HP desktop. It did the same thing - went to 18% and stopped. After another 30+ minutes, I called HP, and waited and waited on hold. I was getting impatient and decided to run the HP server recovery disk. While that was running, I got through to HP (close to an hour on hold). The guy seemed knowledgeable and told me that the updates are stalling at 18%. He told me that they are hearing waits/stalls that average around 2 hours at the 18% figure. For anyone else with a new HP mediasmart server, learn from my lesson and be patient.

The HP rep told me that it should not be a problem to run the first install with a windows OS via boot camp. This is not true for something like parallels. In the end, I did get the install done through XP via boot camp. He also told me that they are seeing problems with people dedicating a space larger than 100 GB's for Time Machine. He said it works for some people for a while, but it inevitably fails. When it fails, he said they are finding that people have to run a full server recovery (you lose all of your data) to get TM running again. They have not been successful with just creating a new slot/space for TM. Has anyone else heard this?.......................
