Sep 24, 2009how can i change the default volume level in SL upon startup? it used to startup with whatever level it was at before i restarted. now it readjust each time.

OS X :: New HD Not Showing Up In Disk Utility - This Volume Is The Startup Volume And Cannot Be Erased
Aug 10, 2009 I have my imac apart right now and replaced the internal HD as it was not working. I assume the problem is the new one is not formatted with OSX, so from the INSTALL CD I opened the disk utility and see only one drive called "MEDIA".? Or is that just part of the install dvd that looks like a HD? In the system it shows as not formatted, 0 bytes. When selected in Partition it says :
"This voume is the startup volume and cannot be erased. Size 7.1 GB The disk is not writable and cannot be partitioned"
So i guess thats not my new HD I am seeing? Other than that there is only the two OSX install CD icons.

Oct 29, 2009I am having a problem with my volume on my iMac. It is turned all the way up. and I keep turning it down everytime but when I restart or shutdown the computer when it boots back up it is back at being 100% volume again. How do I fix this to where it is at a decent volume at startup?

Feb 12, 2010I have Onyx and I did the usual diagnostic. It then says that "startup volume needs to be repaired" and that I need to boot into my Mac Os X install DVD and go to Disk Utility. I put in the DVD, press restart, and hold C. While my mac is rebooting it ejects the disk and takes me back to my normal desktop. What did I do wrong? Or what can I do to fix it?

Aug 1, 2010Sadly I have a feeling I will be here asking for help for most of the week (if not month) as I run into problems.
Everytime I reboot my system, my volume is set to the max. I can lower it without issue, and if I log out and back in, the volume stays the same. It only happens when I reboot. Anyone know why this is happening and/or how I would go around fixing the issue?
Edit: I think the issues I am running into are caused by bad permissions on most of the com.apple.* files. Will the file be recreated with the correct permissions if I move/delete the files? If not, what should the permissions be so I can manually change them back.
Before I forget, yes I have been repairing permissions, but not all the files are being fixed.
OS X :: Minimum Sound Volume Not Low Enough
May 27, 2010With my new headphones (Sennheiser HD280-PRO) even the lowest volume is too high (even when using the extra levels using the option-key). It's just below the level where it'll be uncomfortable, but lower would still be preferred.
Does anyone know how I can get OS X to use a different scale? I have a MBP 4,1 with OS X 10.6.3.

Jan 14, 2010I'm using Onyx every so often when things start to get sluggish. Recently, things keep flying out of whack for no obvious reason. Like, USB ports stop working, or icons won't load. When I run Onyx, it tells me that the startup volume needs repair. I'll put in the Snow Leopard disk, repair the startup volume and return to Onyx, which then says everything is fine and goes about its business. Then, after not too long, things fly out of whack again and I'll need to repair the startup volume again.
What causes the startup volume to need repair? Is there some way I can avoid this kind of thing? Is there something I'm doing that's making this happen?
This would be an obnoxious problem to try and recreate for the Apple store people. Taking it in there, they'll probably just repair the startup volume and send me on my way.
Software :: Startup Volume Is Missing?
Sep 29, 2008The problem began with the Mac running slow and then freezing. Shutting down and restarting (if possible) gave some improvements until finally I got to a point where I could not open up anything from the desktop. I was able to open up my applications from a Firefox image on the desktop. If I placed anything in the applications folder I could open it up as normal. After doing some back up I then began to try different lines of appraoch for solutions:
First: I went into the Disk Utility and verified the disk and repaired permissions. This did not solve the problems.
Second: I booted the computer with TechTool Deluxe. I ran the tests and it found an error on the Volume it scanned---Error -4. I then did a repair of this error which went through successfully. The program then proceeded with another scan and uncovered Error -694. I let it run through the fix process but chose not to save the changes because it eliminated so much of my data. I was hoping I could find another solution before having to resort what appeared to me to be so drastic.
Third: I thought I might try and re-install Mac OS X 3.9 but there was no volume showing to write it to.
Fourth attempt: I tried to boot the computer with my Mac OS X installer CD and then to use disk utility from there. I noticed that my startup volume appeared in the list of options within disk utility but was 'greyed ' out instead of bold faced. I was able to select it and run the Repair function but that failed. I also noticed that when I selected that start up disk it said it was unmounted. I clicked on the mount button but that did not do anything. I then quit installer and it asked me to choose a startup disk, I chose Network Setup since it was the only option. After that when I would try and start the computer I would get a flashing world sign followed by the folder with a flashing question mark. I realize now it was trying to start from that Network Setup, but could not and afterward it could not find anything to boot from and thus the question mark
Fifth attempt: I tried to boot into Safe Mode. I could not. I tried to boot while holding down the Option key. Startup Disk Manager comes on the screen but there are no start up disks to choose from. It appears my Hard Disk has vanished.
Sixth attempt: I then booted again from TechTool Deluxe and ran through the whole process again, but for some reason the repairs could not be completed. I tried several times but the program keeps giving me the same message: "The Volume Structure Rebuild could not be completed"
The best I can figure is that I had a progressively failing hard drive which finally totally gave out. This seems to be the best explanation for all of the problems but I am hoping that someone on here might have a solution for me which I have not discovered yet.

MacBook Pro :: Volume Up / Down Latency - No Sound
Sep 26, 2010I have a late '08 MBP hooked up to a new 27" ACD, using a bluetooth apple keyboard and magic mouse. It's been working fine in all respects until I woke it up today. Everything is fine except the volume. If I tap volume up or down on the keyboard, there's serious latency (5-10 seconds) between me pressing the button and it showing the volume moving. Secondly (and more importantly), there's no sound at all (no matter what volume it's set at). I've already directed the sound through the monitor's speakers (like I said, everything was working just fine). I've tried rebooting, double-checking the sound settings, and disconnecting/reconnecting the bluetooth keyboard.

I have a Late 2008 MB running both Leopard and Boot Camp with Windows XP pro SP3. Under boot camp it uses the RealTek driver for the sound card. It is putting out very low volume. Many people have posted similar problems with Vista and windows 7.
Here's the test I did to confirm. I made a 1kHz test tone audio file and played it out of OS X. I connected the output of my headphone jack to a volt meter and measured a little over 1V or 1000mV. I switched to Windows and played the same file. This time I measured 280mV. This proves that the RealTek driver is not sufficient and does not measure up the full potential of the Macbook.
I've called apple on the issue and they say that it is not their problem and they do not support it. Even though they advertise that Windows is fully functional under boot camp. The solution for the MBP was that someone modified the INF driver file. Unfortunately, Apple uses a different chip in the MB and this solution will not work. I tried it.
MacBook Pro :: Volume Seems To Be Locked - No Sound Comes Out
Oct 30, 2009The volume seems to be on lock and no sound comes out of the computer speakers. If I go to the volume sign at the top of the page the volume meter is white and stuck at the top. If I press F5 and F4 it moves neither up nor down and underneath the volume bar there is a circle with a line in it, which I presume is mute. I have gone into system pref -sound -out put and thats stuck too. Also there is a red light on in the headphone socket.

My school is using a Mac to run the sound for the fall play and I need to disable this sound. I know it can be done, I read how in David Pouge's OS X Leopard: The Missing Manuel, but that's currently several miles away in south Philly at my sister's house.
Can anyone tell me how to disable that sound? I think it might be a Terminal command, but like I said, I can't remember and I can't check.

MacBook :: No Sound Click When Pressing Volume?
May 6, 2009out of the blue something weird started happening. When i would press the up and down volume keys on the keyboard, no sound is coming out. When i raise or lower the volume from the top status bar, that little click is audible, but when i press the up and down keys from the keyboard, no sound comes out. is this a hardware problem? will apple replace/fix this? could i have muted it or something or is this like i said, a hardware problem?

Apr 17, 2012since a few weeks, we regularly experience that the sound volume control does not show up in the screen title bar, and we cannot play music in iTunes or in youtube. I don't know if this is since i attached a usb Time machine backup disk or since when i upgraded from 10.7.2 to 10.7.3 The only way out is rebooting and then this works again, The sound volume control is back and i can listen music.Â

Sep 10, 2008I have a Powerbook 1.5GHz 15.2" with mac os x 10.5.4 and yesterday while cleaning the computer I noticed something weird. With computer unplugged from the power source, i turned it on and increased the volume when the desktop come on. Before I could hear the alert sound when you change the volume there was another sound, like 3 lower volume pops, the normal sound it makes when you change the volume. Then I turned off the computer plugged in all the cables and power source and turned on and then when I changed the volume I only hear the normal alert sound when changing the volume. It only happened when the computer was running on battery.

ITunes For Mac :: Sound Quality And Volume So Different When Use Other Media Players?
Aug 24, 2014I have spent a lot of time over the last two years trying to get my itunes library organized as well as getting good digitized versions from my vinyl records as well as CDs. I was pleased with my results and then I added the songs to itunes. I could not believe how inconsistent the sound quality was. Invariably the volume is always lower. [Do not post a reply such as: Check the volume controls in itunes proper as well as in itunes preferences (i.e., Sound Check, Sound Enhancer) & the Volume Adjustment in the Information pane under Options for particular songs.] I tried all of those means of adjusting volume. They do NOT work.Â
There is something more insidious at work in itunes which prevent good sound reproduction. I will give an example. I have played Frankie Valle and the Four Season's song "C'Mon Marianne" on the OS X system sound (i.e. clicking the play button to the song file when selected on the desktop or wherever it resides) as well as in Amadeus Pro. The song sounds great. When I play it when it's in the itunes' library the first part of the song is too lound and then when Frankie Valle starts singing his voice is at a significantly reduced volume.Â
I have edited the foregoing song in Amadeus Pro to a very high volume (i.e., Effects>Amplify), reloaded it into itunes and it still does not inprove the volume of Frankie's voice in the song, even though the rest of the song is somewhat louder. I have played with the Equalizer in itunes to no effect. It just does not work.Â
Now, I would glading move away from itunes and use another media player. However, I have other Apple devices through which I listen to music. And the only way I know of to listen,e.g., on the iphone is through itunes.Â
The other related problem with itune, or should I say iCloud, is icloud match. The icloud Match has taken great sounding music and given me back music of an inferior quality, even though it is a Matched AAC format.Â

Windows On Mac :: Bootcamp - How To Delete A Previous Volume On Startup Disk
Feb 4, 2009I'm retrying to install windows on my mac. It's the second time I'm trying, but it has somehow become way harder. The first time I installed Windows, everything worked perfectly, untill I noticed that SP2 wasn't installed, and I couldn't install it on my windows, somehow.
Now I'm trying it with a different version of XP (Pro), but Bootcamp is giving issues. I haven't deleted the old volume/partition (don't know the difference) of windows yet, as it is installed on my startup disk and Disk Utility won't delete it .
