I've had an iMac for just about a year and over time I guess I just didn't notice but the machine always ran very quietly. At the same time the back of the computer would heat up so bad that it would nearly burn my hand if I left it there. Well last week I decided to upgrade to Lion from Snow Leopard and when I did the install failed and froze up the hard drive. I took the computer in to the apple store and they determined that it had to have a new hard drive installed because the old one (only a year old) had a physical malfunction (was broke). So anyway I have my iMac back and get it started up, backed up from time machine, and then finally get Lion istalled - and now all of the sudden I notice that the fans in the computer are CONSTANTLY blowing - I can hear them spinning and can hear the air venting out of the back of the computer - and the computer is STILL really hot on the backside of the screen. Â
So now I am wondering if the originial problem was the computer heating up and if that may have broken the otherwise good hard drive? Also now that I have a new hard drive - should I be concerned about the fans being on ALL the time? I mean they never go off. Even when I leave the computer for hours and come back to it and the screen is asleep the fans are STILL buzzing away at top speed. Here is the stats on the computer at the time that I'm typing this note - there are no other programs running than Firefox and Mail. Also - I don't know what the optical drive is exaclty - but if it's the DVD drive (superdrive) - there is nothing in the DVD disc driveÂ

Yesterday, I upgraded to iWork09 and today I cannot get my MacBookPro to turn on. I have tried all the recommended reboot methods but nothing seems to work. I suspect the new software is the culprit because at the end of the load, there was a message to say the disc could not complete because of 'damage'. The software worked fine but I noticed the notebook was running significantly slower and now, I cannot even turn on.
today my cpu fan starts running at 44 ºC cpu temperature, and does not stop. is this normal? it has never started before in 4 years... should i be worried about my mac dying or so?

I bought a new macbook pro a few months ago and the fan starts running the second I open it and keeps running until i close it, the bottom of my mac also gets really hot and the fan does not seem to be helping it cool down. Is this normal?

My Macbook pro (Lion) starts up very slow. Many things seem to happen during startup. The screen goes small, blue, back and many times the loginscreen is coming up in a lower resolution. When I do a Pram reset it starts up with the correct resolution but after a couple of startups it goes back to 800x600 resolution (I guess). When I Log in the resolution is ok so only the login screen is a lower resolution. And if there is a solution beyond resetting the PRAM?

I have a MacBook pro 13" that I bought around April 2010 (right when they switched to the 4GB of RAM and GeForce 320M video card)The original problem started with my trackpad movements becoming very sluggish. This eventually led to a complete lockup at the apple screen. I did everything suggested in previous posts (reset pram ECT). Nothing worked so I reinstalled OSX and everything was fixed.Â
About a week later the problem started again with the same exact outcome. Now after reinstalling a third time, I have this very wierd screen on my screen. Its hard to explain so please see pictures. After sitting on the apple logo for about 5 min, this is now my screen... Â
One of the hdd's in my macpro runs constantly. The computer is constantly reading and writing to the hd. Not sure which one. CHecked processes and it shows that it is in fact doing so, even with no open applications. Not sure where to look or how to fix it. SLowing down my computer as well.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've had Mac's since my IIsi in '91 and currently the proud owner of MacBook Pro, iPhone and iMac which is just 18 months old.2 days ago I switched the machine off (iMac) and it hasn't been fully back on since. Each time I start it it automatically goes into soft boot mode. As the small bar moves across the screen it stops after about 1 centimetre (.4 of an inch) and simply whines and shuts down. I've tried the old tricks of holding down 'c' and 'd'. On one of the attempts I did reach the desktop and managed to run disk utility which said there were no problems. However, once I rebooted it simply carried on doing the same. I also managed to run Techtool deluxe which comes with the Apple Extended Warranty. Unfortunately it's not fully compatiable with OSX Lion so didn't run properly.Â
I've not known a Mac to be so knackered before. I have tried the command-R scenario but I don't think reloading Lion OSX is the cure for what appears to be a serious problem. When I shut down the iMac on Thursday I had Acrobat and Photoshop open, also iTunes and Mail. I generally use Facetime these days but on Thursday (I haven't used my Skype account for 18 months) I did install the latest version of Skype as someone required a Skype call with me. The software installed okay and I had the conversation with the person though the camera feature didn't work my end. I do wonder whether installing the Skype software has done something to the iMac. However, I don't see that it would stop it starting up completely!Â

I have noticed my macbook fan constantly runs. The unit does seem hot. This seems t have caused n=my battery life t be cut by 2/3.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy PowerMac's (G5 Dual 1.8GHz procs) fans seem to run at a solid 4k rpm's regardless of what I'm doing, even with CPU usage set to low. I've taken the whole machine apart, cleaning it with canned air and such, but the problem just won't leave me be. The air coming out of the machine is ice cold, and the temperature readings I'm getting are about 86 degrees F for the CPU's and 70 for the HDD, so I'm not sure what gives.. Slot and Backside fans are running at 255 rpm, but the others are all 4k.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've just bought a second hand macbook pro, the battery is dead which is easy to replace i guess but worse the fans are running constantly at around 6000rpm.I've tried resetting the smc and pram but that hasn't helped.I tried to run the hardware diagnosis but that freezes when it gets up to testing the logic board and i have to pull the power adapter to turn machine off.I only have the second of the two install dvds and machine is running os x 10.5.8
View 11 Replies View RelatedFor a couple of days the fan of my (15" late 2011) MacBook Pro has been constantly running and the Mac has become sluggish. The CPU temperature is 156 °F. It seems that the problem would be caused by "coreservicesd" process taking a huge percentage (57%) of the Mac RAM.
I am running OS X 10.9.3 with 8 Go. RAM and 500 Go. HD
My Macbook has started to freeze up constantly after startup, applications are non-responsive. I can still move the mouse around the screen when this happens but the pointer soon turns into the beach-ball icon and after 5 minutes things go back to normal but only for a minute or two before everything starts freezing up again. There is a clicking noise coming from inside the mac whenever this happens.I have run a virus check which reported no infections and i have uninstalled all programs installed since the problem occurred but to no avail.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have one of the black macbooks with c2d, a GMA950 graphics card, and 2 gig of ram. When I run Windows XP in Fusion, the fan runs almost constantly - even without any windows applications running (antivirus is running). This bothers me.
It's getting time for me to consider a new laptop. Does anyone have any experience with the GeForce 9400M or 9600GT video card laptops? I'm wondering if my experience will be different with either video card.
I've just purchased a new Macbook. I'm very happy with it aside from the fan noise, which seems a little loud to me. Now, before I bring it into the Apple Store to have it looked at I just want to check and see if maybe I'm just being overly picky. I downloaded iStat, based on some Google searching I did on the subject and my fans are running around 2000 rpm, which I understand is normal. But in my apartment, which is admittedly quiet, I can hear my fan running constantly. It isn't extremely loud, but it isn't totally quiet either. I'm just wondering what level of noise I should reasonably expect out of my Macbook.

The fan is almost constantly running, it shouldn't be. The Activity monitor at the moment is showing that 45% of CPU is idle. About a third of my drive is free. I have 500 Gb of SSD, so there are no moving disk heads. The screen is turned up to a level I want to work with. I am running the regular stuff -- Word, Firefox, Mail and other Apple apps, all usual stuff. The MBP sits on a clear glass desk so heat can disburse through the glass, but the fan is still running. The MBP is about two years old. Lion.

Got my new MacBook Pro - I'm used to Mac as I have had iMac & the smaller MacBook for about 6 years so fairly user savvy, but have never come across the problem I have at the moment. Set up my mail accounts - received and sent mails, but the whole time the little gearwheel is running on the sent box. Is this normal - I've never had it before unless I've actually been sending and at the moment I'm not.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 13" MacBook Pro Mid 2012 model. Specs: Processor 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7, Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Graphics Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB, Software OS X 10.9.2 (13C64). A couple months ago I went to turn on my computer and I had a blinking folder with a question mark. I diagnosed the problem as a burned out SATA cable. I looked up the serial number of the cable I needed to order, ordered it, and in a couple weeks it arrived. After installing the new cable, I turned on my computer, and voila, no more blinking folder.
However, I noticed that the fan was really loud. Once logged in, I noticed the displays were laggy, and all video I tried to watch was very choppy. I decided to download iStat menus to see what was going on with my computer. Once I checked it, it showed that the cpu was 100% clogged up with 0% on idle. But the crazy part is that 89% of the CPU's tasks showed up as system, and under system, mainly kernal_task.
I restarted my computer, resetted the PRAM (which every once in a while would work regarding the clogged CPU but never the fan), but nothing has worked. Before this problem I was editing video projects for my broadcasting class on Premiere Pro with minor lag spikes. Now, I cannot even render a 5 second clip. I was reading somewhere that my heat sensor may be out, causing the fan to run, but I didnt know if that causes my CPU to clog up...

I've got an early 2008 Macbook Pro and, recently, I've noticed that the fan (fans?) begins running from the moment the computer is powered-up. iStat tells me that both fans are running at about 2000 rpms, though I only hear a slight whoosing noise from the left side. I don't remember the fan running constantly, and I have noticed that my battery life seems worse than normal recently. Is this normal, and something I just haven't noticed until recently?
View 6 Replies View RelatedRecently my cooling fan has been running at what sounds like full speed and never resumes a quiet speed. I have not used it any differently than I have since I bought it (in January) and have not really added anything to it in the way of downloads.
