OS X :: Macbook Pro 13" - Permissions And SUID Files
Aug 11, 2010
I've had my macbook pro 13" mid 2009 running very slow after updating to 10.6.4. So I run the disk utility and after running it couple of times, some of the problems happened not to be repaired. I've run the disk utility now couple of times and I think that I've had those problems all the time. I am going to post the disk utility report below. I am a new mac user, since aug 2009 and I really do not know what are those:

I have a number of files that have been modified and are SUID files that will be repaired by Disk Utility. Anyone have any idea what this is or if you are seeing this with your Disk Utilities... Here is the output...
Repairing permissions for ?Macintosh HD?
Warning: SUID file "usr/libexec/load_hdi" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskManagement.framework/Versions/A/Resources/DiskManagementTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.................

I recently had a large hard drive crash, and, long story short, I got all my data back but now have a different user account on a new hard drive. The permissions on all the files on the computer are fine.
However, I am a recently graduated film student and use an external drive to edit video. When I tried to open up Final Cut Pro and work on a project, I was told that the program couldn't work because I didn't have "write" access to my scratch drives. I changed the permissions on the relevant folders and can now open the application fine, but can't actually edit because ALL the medi files don't give me full read/write access.
I can change them all one at a time, which requires I enter my password for each one, but this would take a few days of work to complete. My question is: how can I add my user account with read/write permission to many files at once? I've heard this can be done with Terminal, but I'm not sure how.
My computer specs: 15in Macbook Pro, early 2008.System 10.5.8
Info:
MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2008), Mac OS X (10.5.8)

When repairing permissions on a G4 iBook with OS 105.8, I find about 8 files that contain the above message and one that contains the message "ACL found but not expected in the Application / Utilities". What does this mean and how are these corrected?

I've been meaning to ask this for some time. When I repair my disk permissions I get the following warning: "Warning - SUID file 'System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAgent' has been modified and will not be repaired". What does it mean? Why isn't it being repaired?

I got a strange one for you, when I unpack rar files either with UnrarX or The Unarchiver I don't get permission on the file (mkv file). My admin account get's no permissions at all. The staff group get's read only and everyone get's no permissions at all! How can I fix this? I tried repair permissions with the disk utility didn't do a thing. Running Snow Leopard 10.6.2. And this started earlier today without me doing anything to my system or Unrarx/The Unarchiver.

Lately I've noticed that when I repair permissions, it's the same files that keep appearing the log of files being "repaired"... which leads me to believe they're not actually being repaired at all.
It's at the point where I can repair permissions once, generating a log of repaired files, and then if I repair permissions again immediately afterwards (whether I've closed and reopened Disk Utility in the mean time or not), the same exact list of files appears as being repaired.

I have been using my parents OS X login primarily for my computer life. I have made videos, played games, etc. using one account. But I decided to make my own account, and have had some success transferring files. However, the permissions are still set to the other account. So in iMovie, I can watch my videos but not edit them, since I have read-only permissions. I could easily go into finders "get info" menu and change permissions, but I have hundreds upon hundreds of imovie projects. So, how can I change the permissions of hundreds of files at a time? Editing the folders permission didn't work.

For some reason, a number of files on my hard drive are "read" instead of "read/write." I am not sure how this happened, but I wanted to know if there's a quick way to change the permissions on about 1000 files without changing each one one-by-one. You would think clicking the folder and changing it there would solve this issue...

I performed an erase and install of Snow Leopard and then used Migration assistant to transfer all my data back to my computer. After that I noticed that on my 2 other internal hard drives, most of my folders had a red minus sign over them and when I clicked the folder it said "The Folder can't be opened because you don't have permissions to see its content". I clicked get info and under sharing and permissions there was a name that said "unknown". was this the newly created account which I had deleted? Afterwards I added my account and applied it to all my files and folders. I can now access all my files and folders. But now my question is weather or not my files became corrupt or was it just a permissions issue? Also What caused the permissions issue in the first place?

In short, I can't import any new files into itunes except for from the itunes store. When I downloaded an mp3 online, and tried to drag and drop it to itunes in order to import, it says "Attempting to copy to the disc Macintosh HD failed: You do not have enough access priveleges for this operation. I am the only admin on the computer, i have gone through music>itunes>Itunes music and made read/write for me on all three under "get info" when trying to import a CD it says "the song couldn't be converted, you don't have write access to your itunes media folder or a folder within it" I spotlighted "itunes media" and found nothing. Next I repaired disk permissions from disk utility, still the same problems.

I'm using mac os x server as SMB file sharing server and i got some issues with permissions.
I try to use POSIX permissions. I put :
owner -> read & write
group -> read & write
other -> read only
And after propagate these permissions it's working fine.
Until an user create a folder or a file and i see that the permissions of it are :
owner -> read & write
group -> read only
other -> read only
I have set default permissions on new files and folder for this sharepoint with the great permissions for the group. But it didn't work..Someone have a solution ?

I have two users on my mac and am having some issues with sharing files. I created a shared folder and gave the other user read/write permissions. When I log in as that user, the folder can be accessed, but some of the files in that folder cannot be accessed. These are all photos, and for the most part I'm dropping them into the shared folder from iPhoto.
I tried it again by using the Public folder with the same result. However, there isn't consistency with the actual files that don't have permission. In other words, the shared folder I created may have a file that does not have permission, but that same file does have permission when I dropped it in the Public folder. So it is totally random as to which files in the shared folder don't have permission to be accessed.
I also tried to simply drag the files to the other user. Same result.

How do I batch change files' UNIX settings? I have web sharing turned on and have it set up so it's serve up the files and folders on my hard disk. It works great, but when I look at the folders it's showing in the web page, approximately 1 in 10 folders just isn't being displayed. The OS X permissions on these folders is all set to "read and write" for everyone, so I presume there is some sort of other UNIX or Apache file/folder settings that are keeping these folders from being displayed in the webpage. How do I make these hidden folders show up in my web page's displayed directory of folders?

After a lot of fruitless time-consuming crap including reinstalling my OS and deleting all my preferences, they created a new useraccount and it didn't have the problem. So they said I should just make a new account and migrate everything over there and use that.
Well, I've spent the last 8 hours trying to put everything to rights after everything they did to my computer. And I got most things taken care of. However, when in iTunes (which I had to reload my entire library into), I find that I can't edit information on any of the songs. I looked into file info and even though I told it to "apply to enclosed items" when I gave the new account read/write permission and transferred ownership.... it didn't do it. The files within the folders are still set as being owned by the old account, which, I assume, is why I can't edit them.
There has to be a way to fix this that doesn't involve going through 14,000 songs and individually changing their permissions settings, but I can't find it.

I currently have a Mac Mini operating as a Home Theatre with my TV, i transfer media files between my MacBook and the Mini via the Wi-Fi network.
The files transfer fine, no problems. However when it comes to modifying or editing the files i have a labourious task of going into the info pane of the file & adding the Mac Mini as a user and then giving it the read/write permissions.
Is there any way that files transferred from my MacBook via this method already give the read/write permissions automatically to my Mac Mini? Instead of going into every file and adding the permissions manually?
Probably is a simple answer to this, but its the first time i've used file sharing between two macs.

I'm on a G4 running 10.4.11. Recent strange behavior include mouseovers invoking clicks; cycling windows (programs and finder.) These annoyances seemed to have fixed themselves after restart. Now, many (not all) of my preferences have been changed requiring manual reset: auto login on start-up; internet connection. But the most problematic is that my CS3 programs won't launch due to one reason or another (missing licensing permissions or files; different messages with each program.)
I launched Disk Utility (using both Safe Boot and the Install CD) but Repair Permissions failed with a No Valid Package message

we had an older xserve die on us recently, a g5 system running 10.5. we were able to recover most of the file content we needed off of the server, but not all of it (yet), and not any of the system files itself (the main drive was toast) the problem im having is this... we've been migrating this content over to a newer server running 10.6.8 server. Several of the files we need to get at and modify however were locked via the finder right before the original server went down (we do this to prevent others from editing a live file on the server). now, because the user data for these files was lost (terminal & finder show them as being owned by "unknown") we cannot change ownership of the files to unlock them.so basically, its a permissions loop that we cannot escape from: terminal will not let us chown or chmod the file, because its owner is unknown because the file is locked via finder, it will not let us change the owner.

I recently had to create a new user, copy all apps and files to same, and then reinstall MS Office 2004 for Mac. I use a mini, 2gig Ram, and Leopard (10.5.6)OS. All my old office files have become "read only" and I cann ot modify and save w/o renaming. Is there a "blanket" way to change the Permissions to "read & write" for all my Office files? Idid not see a similar item in the FAQ's......
Also, when I open an Office application, I get the following message: "An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library". How do I fix that?
