I had this problem before. Erased the hard drive and then reinstalled everything. I made it through it but I think I may have done it wrong. Anyways the computer worked good till the other day. I upgraded to Snow Leopard and now it is doing it again.
Do I need to start with the install disk 1 that came with the computer and install disk 2, then install snow leopard? Or can is there a faster route of doing this?
Looking to use an SSD in a new MP, as a boot disc. Is there any way to designate where the home folder is during installation (and thus avoid a write/delete on the SSD volume)? I know the home directory can be moved after install, but my question is about keeping it off the SSD alltogether.

I bought a new 320gb hard drive and snow leopard today and want to ensure that I won't lose anything if I back my hard drive up as a "regular leopard" machine and then try and recall the files after installing the new drive as a "snow leopard" running system.

I have a macpro setup with two partitions.Originally one partition assigned to Snow Leopard.I log in using a network user (using OSX server) and that user has local Admin rights.I setup a new instance of Snow Leopard on the secondary Partition and logged in using the network user.This had the effect of using the partition 1 Home directory for this user and I can't get the secondary partition to use itself for storing the users home directory.The workaround I have is to log in to Partition 2 snow leopard with a local admin user then temporarily rename the Users folder on partition 1. Next login to partition 2 as the network user, then everything gets created on partition 2 as expected.Finally rename the Partition 1 Users folder back.Now I can log in to either partitoin with the same user and have different local home setups.
Anyone else had this or is there a better procedure for setting up multiple partitions? The same happens with LION. I need to keep a snowleoapard partition with all the setup I currently have, but start a new LION partition.I don't want any cross contamination, hence the requirement for separation.

Because there are no options for installation, I dont know how to do an archive and install and it is essential that I have my home folder and it's contents intact. Does anyone know if reinstalling snow leopard will automatically archive my home folder or if there is something else I need to do?

This is fine.When they open Microsoft Word e.g. and do a save you can't see this 'Work' folder in the Finder tree. Do I have to set up some kind of script - I just want a shortcut to this 'Work' home folder in Finder....how can you put one there automatically?  Is there any easy way so if they save to their mac 'Documents' folder it just get's re-routed to their 'Work' folder?

Notes. Failed HDD ASD Test.  A new hard drive was installed in September of 2011 after the previous hard drive failed. Having worked well until now the system seems to give the same problems as it had previously. I am wondering if this is a compatibility issue as others have pointed out. Â
I have been told by the technician my only option is to replace the entire hard drive again for the second time with a new one. However to my understanding a ASD test is very specific and this my not be necessary? Further I am attempting a final backup just in case. I don't have to take it in where I could just back it up myself without the system shutting down.

My home folder shows a file size of 912 GB, yet the consumed space on my 1TB hard drive only shows 798 GB used. How can that be, given that the home folder is stored on the hard drive (HD)? I discovered the discrepancy when Time Machine wouldn't make backups anymore ... it said there wasn't enough space to even make an initial backup. When tracked individually, the home folder along with the other folders on my HD show a combined size that totally fills up my drive, yet when I checked the space on my HD it says there's approximately 200 GB free. I've run checks (Disk Utility) on both the HD and the external backup drive and they both checkout OK. I excluded almost all of my files from the Time Machine preferences, then it was able to make a succesful backup. Does that mean that the file sizes reported by Time Machine are correct (the drives completely full) and that there's something wrong with my internal HD?Â

I have two WD 640gigs and the stock WD 500, and I am having trouble deciding on the the optimum configuration. I am open to suggestions. I use my computer for general use as well as for my video editing and graphic design hobbies if that info helps.
I am curious as to the benefits of of the following:
Drive 1 (640)
partition 1: 150gig for OS
partition 2: Bootcamp
remainder: Offline storage
Drive 2 (640)
partition 1: Applications
remainder: music/photos
(scratch disk here?)
Drive 3: (500)
Time machine
Would there be a noticeable benefit to having the applications being separate from the OS boot drive? What if anything else should be split across multiple HDs to increase speed? I've heard of moving the swap file from elsewhere on the forum but I am not sure as to what exactly that is nor the benefits of doing it.
My final question(s) is how exactly I could go by moving my application folder to another drive separate from the OS drive? Just drag and drop? What is this deal with making an alias?
I recently purchased an external hard drive (firewire 400) and I want to move my home folder there. When I hold down the option key and click on the folder, it just copies my home folder to the hard drive. Is it possible to move my home folder to the hard drive? I'm using OSX 10.3.9.
View 7 Replies View RelatedOn Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8 (Intel) and on a FileVault protected user my home directory is appearing as a removabile drive on my desktop and everywhere else. I had to reconfigure iTunes, Firefox and Camino both fail to start and not to mention other applications not being able to find my/their stuff. This started happening after I updated via the Software Update app a day or two ago.

I can easily put subfolders onto the drive, but if I try to feed it the entire home folder it tosses it out again. I don't know how to use Finder to reach the /Users folder, where xxx is just a subfolder, but I can do this from the terminal command line; however, then I got stuck on how to proceed: I tried to mount /dev/disk1 [which diskutil shows as its name]; each variation I'v tried runs into some problem: disk busy, not found, etc. I was using sudo commands, so I don't think it's a permissions problem.

I bought Snow Leapord when it was originally released but never installed it. But now I wanted to go ahead and finally get rid of Leapord, but was wondering if the copies of SL that Apple sells in the stores are updated already with the latest updates or are they just the same original CD from the initial launch?I would prefer to install SL which has all the latest updates and Boot Camp drivers already on the disk.I know it won't be exactly up to date, but fairly recent.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI know there are lots of threads on this forum about Windows 7 and Snow Leopard but the point of this board is to have discussion and here is my point of view....Snow Leopard will not be competing with Windows 7.Snow Leopard, as Apple have more or less said, is a maintenance release to pave the way for the latest hardware and software. Let's all get excited about Mac OS 10.7, this will be the OS that will be a contender to Windows 7.Windows 7 is more or less competing with Windows XP and Windows Vista. If Windows 7 does not have a large adoption, Microsoft is screwed. People love Windows XP and don't want to jump ship. Besides some new touch technologies built into the OS, what can Windows 7 offer people they do not already have with XP? Or better yet, with Vista?
