Mac Pro :: Extensions Have Wrong Permissions_Corrupt System?
Apr 30, 2012
I am trying to see how to fix the permissions on my computer. I have ran the fix permissions from the Disk Utility until it says everything is fine. I have even booted from a Snow Leopard disk to run fix permissions and repair disk. Still having the same problem.  The problem is, that in the finder I still keep getting errors saying extension "x" could not be used because it was not installed correctly. The computer crashed while doing an update so I believe this to be what caused the problem. I have way to many applications to have to reinstall each one. I have the old extension folders for the Library and System (that I know are fine) but cannot figure out what to boot from that will show the old finder so I can replace them (and I obviously cannot replace them on an active system). Unfortuately all my latest TimeMachine BU have the corrupt system now too. I want to update to Lion but not with a corrupt system.

I get the following errors:Â
The system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/AppleGraphicsControl.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update.Â

I have run disk permissions repair and disk repair, but these errors still come up when I turn on computer.Â

My MacBook internal hard disk is currently partitioned into Snow Leopard (JHFS+), Storage (NTFS), and Windows 7 (NTFS). Whenever I try to mount my storage partition, it shows up as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" in Disk Utility, and refuses to mount. My Windows 7 partition, which is also NTFS, mounts automatically when I log in. Is there a way to perhaps force my storage partition to mount as an NTFS-formatted drive? This problem only exists when using OS X though, as it shows up fine on both Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7.
I also have an external hard drive which is partitioned (using MBR) as Storage (FAT32), Backup (NTFS) and Mac Storage (JHFS+). It all mounts properly, with the exception of Mac Storage, which shows up, curiously enough, as an NTFS drive in Disk Utility. Same question as above: Is there a way to force it to mount as a JHFS+ drive? (I'm using Tuxera NTFS 2010.10, if that makes any difference).

I restored my mac from time machine, downgrade from Mac OS X 10.10 to 10.9.3. After that the position of the input method selection box is not right. The right place should be: After typing continually, the selection box jump to left edge of the screen: The problem occured in IM, word, web browser, etc. It's all right before I restored from time machine, in both 10.9.3 and 10.10. Some of my firends has the same problem.Â

I'm running the most updated version of Snow Leopard on my iMac. I've recently purchased some add on planes for x-plane they were delivered in an installer with a .app extension. When I double click on them the icon does the usual animation to show it has responded to you clicking on it, but then nothing. It will not install or do anything at all, just sits there. I've tried restarting. I've been working with the vender and they are stumped so they just sent me a zip file of the plane for me to manually install, which I've done.
Has anyone ever experiences similar problems, is it some type of setting I might have changed thats prohibiting these from running??..................

I know I can go into each individual file and bring up the "get info" window, then click "hide extension" but I want to hide all extensions for all my files (including anything I download in the future). Is there a setting I can go into so that it will do this for me?

I have a kext file from the macbookpro forums that will let me use 4 finger gestures on my early 2008 macbook pro. I can't replace the current AppleUSBMultitouch.kext no matter what I try to unlock the folder/repair permissions etc and I know I'm in the administrator account. So I need to know the basics of modifying these (and don't worry, I have it backed up etc)

From what I understand the main reason the kernel in SL boots into 32-bit is because of potential 32-bit kernel extensions.
Is there a way to find out what kernel extensions a machine has and whether those are 32 or 64 bit extensions? This way I could figure out if I should boot with 32 or 64 bit kernel.

I recently did an erase and install of Snow Leopard. After the install I used Migration assistant to restore all my files. Before it completed I got about 7 messages that extensions were not installed properly and need to be reinstalled. One of them had something to do with my Canon Printer and the other was for my Elgato TV Tuner. I'm not sure what the other extensions were. Is it normal for some extensions to not restore correctly after using Migration assistant?

I had a number of extensions - now they are gone (in that they don't load and are not listed in the preferences list of extensions, though they are still in the library). Downloading and then reinstalling is not working - safari reports that they can't be installed.

I am experienced in Excel VBA for the PC. I am finding my way around the Mac using Excel version 14.0.2. I am trying to rename files using Name oldpathname AS newpathname the files have .jpg and .pdf extensions. The files show up in Finder with and without the extension in the file name. I assume I will have to specify the entire file name including the extension. I am unsure what it means when I see files with and without the extensions in their names. On another but related subject, I have discovered the 31 character limit (truncated file names) in names as returned by the dir function. Does Name oldpathname as newpathname have the same problem?

I have a set of split files with letter extensions. They are named <filename>.iso.__a, <filename>.iso.__b, and so on. Additionally they continue on to <filename>.iso._aa to <filename>.iso._as. This further confuses me because a Mac will list the <filename>.iso.__a first but a PC will put the <filename>.iso._aa first so I am unsure which is the initial file. I haven't found software that will join them properly. Split and Concat stalls out at 4kb. MacHacha makes a full sized file but it won't mount. Stuffitexpander won't even try, and Ajoiner shades out all the files as they don't end in numbers. I also tried renaming all the files with numbers but this too failed.

Just doing some pre-SL install research. I'm curious about running the kernel in 64-bit mode. I have a mid 2009 13" MBP so the hardware should be able to boot into the 64-bit kernel. I don't use a whole ton of 3rd party applications and not many external peripherals so I think I might be able to get away with k64.
But, is there a way for me to check for sure? How do I know if certain apps or peripherals/extensions are not 64-bit? If I click on the apps and use "Get Info" will that tell me? Perhaps there is a list somewhere similar to the SL compatibility wiki that tells people's experiences with 64-bit compatibility. What if I boot into k64 and try to run an incompatible item, will the OS tell me so, or just crash, or just not work, or what?
As far as peripherals:
iPod touch 2G
Mighty Mouse (bluetooth)
i1 Display2 colorimeter
Dell 2209WA
Ruahrc

How can I "hide" the .app extensions for my apps? I know it doesn't effect anything but it's a nuisance to my eyes. Also anything that has to do with iLife doesn't have the extension.

I was trying to install the gmail reader extension, but it told me that I don't have Extensions enabled. I know it's probably staring me right int the face, but how do you enable extensions? I've gone through pretty much everything I can think of and Safari help is no good at all.

Two simple questions:
1) Does anyone know when, in particular, the extensions gallery will go live? Later this summer is a bit vague. I'm waiting on a few crucial extensions (e.g., AdBlock, WOT, Xmarks).
2) Concerning the Search Bar (Bing, Google, Yahoo!), will I be able to add additional search fields via the extensions gallery (provided someone creates them, of course)?
I presently use firefox and found the 'MyCroft Project' to be absolutely invaluable. It allows me to search common websites without having to navigate to them directly (url). If I can get this added capability, I will switch over for good!

I'm using Safari 5.1.5 on a MacBook Pro. After using Chrome for a year I have switched back to Safari. I set up all my bookmarks & extensions and it worked great for a few days until I had to restart the computer. Then Safari opened up with only my OLD bookmarks, and no extensions! *This has happened twice now!!* Also, when I go the Extensions panel under Preferences, it says my extensions are "installed" yet they are nowhere to be found.
Is there something I need to do to SAVE my bookmarks and extensions, because there's no way I'm going to putter around re-creating them each time I reboot the computer.

Since I upgraded Lion to version 10.7.4 and Safari to 5.1.7 my safari extensions won't work. These aren't exotic extensions here, we're talking about 1Password and Evernote. When I launch Safari, I get a message saying that the extensions don't work with this version of the browser. I removed the extensions and tried to reinstall only to get a message saying that there was an error when trying to install (a truly usefull message, I might add).Â
Thinking that this might be an issue with a specific extension (1Password), I contacted the developer. Over the course of a week or ten days, we went through a series of steps to try to resolve the problem. None of these steps resolved the issue, then suddenly, for no obvious reason, the extensions started working UNTIL I have to restart my computer when it was physically relocated. Upon restarting and relaunching Safari, I got the same old message -- the extension won't work. When I tried to reinstall, the "error when trying to install" message popped up.

Apple has sent a reminder to its developers that the company's new storefront for web extensions will be opening to the public soon, providing an App Store-like experience for customizing and extending the new Safari 5 browser. "Submit your Safari extension today," the email says. "Selected extensions will be featured on the new Safari Extensions Gallery. Well soon be launching the Safari Extensions Gallery, a new destination that provides you with an opportunity to increase the visibility of your Safari extension beyond your website." The note adds, "the Safari Extensions Gallery will feature selected extensions that offer an innovative user experience. And a one-click installation process will allow users to seamlessly install extensions from a developers website without ever having to leave the Gallery. Have your extension considered for the Safari Extensions Gallery. Submit your extension download URL and supporting metadata today." Developers can already distribute Safari extensions on their own, and at least one site has appeared to draw attention to the browser extensions that are already available. "It remains unclear just how choosy Apples Safari Extension Gallery will be," writes Jonas Wisser, who maintains the Safari Extensions blog. "From the line about innovative user experiences, it seems like theres a chance the SEG will be more selective than the App Store has been. If thats the case, I will likely continue posting submitted extensions here to provide a less curated center for extension distribution."
How Safari 5 Extensions work Apple originally announced the coming Safari Extension Gallery alongside the release of Safari 5 at WWDC. It presents the extension feature as a way for third parties to create buttons for the toolbar or make your own extension bar, change the way web content appears or add controls to web pages. "Safari Extensions are built with web standards, so you can do it all using the power of HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript," Apple's Safari site explains. "If you know how to develop web pages, then you already know how to make extensions for Safari................
