ITunes :: Unable To Copy Folder From External Hard Drive "file In Use"?

Feb 9, 2012

I am trying to copy my iTunes folder from one external hard drive to another external hard drive but I keep getting an error message "unable to copy because file (song name) is in use". It starts copying for a while but keeps stopping when the error message pops up.  No songs are playing so I am not sure why it says certain song files are in use.

MacBook Pro :: Cloning Entire Hard Drive To An External Hard Drive

Mar 31, 2012

Recently I bought 2 identical WD Scorpio Blue 1TB hard drives for my macbook pro 13 inch 2010. My aim is to replace the internal hard drive with one of the two I just purchased and use it as my system drive with Lion, Windows and Data partitions. And for the other hard drive I want to use it as a full disk back up for the internal drive (now 1TB hard drive).†After I was done with setting up both windows and mac and data transfer, when I booedt into the recovery partition from the internal drive to clone the drive to the external drive, the disk utility gave me this error (Could not validate source - error 254). I also tried using Carbon Copy Cloner but it only could clone partitions, not the entire drive. Yesterday I downloaded a copy of Clonezilla. It worked fine until it had to clone an exFAT partition (my data partition). The exFAT partition appeared as 'RAW' partition in clonezilla. As a result, the whole partition appeared to be full and clonezilla had to copy every single blocks of data in that partition and the estimated time remaining was about 30 hours. So clonezilla is out too. Just want to ask if there is any program/application (bootable or not) which allows can do a full disk clone to an external hard drive.

OS X :: How To Clon And Copy The Content From One An External Hard Drive To New Hard Drive

Oct 14, 2009

with cloning/copying the content one an external hard drive onto a new external hard drive. Basically, I have a 500GB FW400 drive which I use to store my media files. It's full, so I purchased a 1TB FW800 drive to replace it. Obviously, I thought I could simply copy and paste the media files from the old drive to the new one.I cannot copy the media files to my internal drive first as my internal drive is only 250GB and nearly full itself.I have used Disk Utility to attempt to close the old drive to the new drive, but keep getting "insufficient space" errors.

OS X :: External Drive As Another Folder / Move And Copy Files?

Apr 27, 2010

I have two Macs, a desktop PM G5 and a laptop Black Macbook, both running 10.5.8. Currently when using the laptop I can see and access the PMG5 and its files through my wireless connection. I'm planning on picking up an external drive, and I'd just like this confirmed, as in its access ability. If I hook up the external drive to the G5 so I can leave it there, and access its files through the G5. will my laptop also be able to access it through the G5. In other words, when I access the G5 from the laptop over wireless, will the external drive appear as just another folder and/or device on the G5 and I'll be able to move and copy files just like I already do?

MacBook Pro :: Consolidating Copy Of ITunes Folder On External Drive Via Terminal

Jun 28, 2012

I've recently got a new MacBook Pro, and for at least 6 years or more, I've been using Windows to handle my iTunes library. At one point, when trying to transfer my library, somehow I lost ALL my music. As a result, I learned to back it all up...And I learned to be patient when doing so.†Any way, I want to make sure that when I transfer my files THIS time, I do it right. I just need to consolidate my iTunes library that I have backed up to an external hard drive to another folder on the same drive.

Then when I move it to iTunes on my Mac, I only have to put the files into the "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder.†That said, I'm fairly decent with using the terminal; I've used Ubuntu for a while, and right now I'm using Fedora. I would use the terminal on my Mac, but I really don't want to use it there; I'll stay safe and let my Fedora computer do the work.†That said, I know that both Mac and Fedora have "rsync" and "find" as part of the UNIX kernel both are built off of. With all that out of the way.

My question is simply which commands I ought to use to manually consolidate the files in the iTunes folder to a separate folder on the same external hard drive. I also happen to have a number of duplicate files, for some reason, except the duplicates are sometimes .mp3 files, while others are .m4a files. While the majority of my music has been restored because of "Purchased" section of the iTunes Store, I'm unsure of which files I'm looking to preserve; Do I just copy the mp3 files, or both? I hate doing music database repair.

OS X :: Cannot Copy Data To External USB Hard Drive

Aug 17, 2009

Macbook pro 13' running 10.5.8 has intermittent issues with usb 2.0 mass storage drives but not jump drives. Here is the issue, my gf just got a brand new mac book pro 13'. This is great for her no more asking to use my unibody macbook. She plugs in the drive I have used for a very long time with my mac my pac etc. with not a hint of issue. The drive shows up copy's stuff off ok. However when it came time to return the data back to the drive it gets about 10% through and just hangs. Here is what I have done. I first thought ok might need a reboot. Then I went with the ok I will check her disk for issues. This is a 3 day old mac book by the way. I found random permissions errors with quick time which has never been run. After the fix the issue goes away for that boot.

The issues seems to come back after a re-boot or so. I go ok enough of this I format the mac with the system disk, then I update to the latest updates from apple. Plug in the drive and still having issues. Run the permissions repair same issues exactly format to format. I have also run the deep test off the system disk the machine checks out through that so I have ruled out ram on her system as a possible culprit. I am at a loss on this machine. I have gone so far as to format the external drive replace the data from my network server and try that. Still no luck. On my box there is no issue it time machines great it copy's data like a usb 2.0 drive should.

OS X :: External Hard Drive Format - Mount On Pc - Copy More That 4 Gig

Apr 3, 2009

Alright, so My ipod is formatted for windows when formatted in this you can only copy chunks of 4 gig things using it as an external. but if you change the formatt of it to take all sizes, then it's not compatible with mac and pc. =/ i had it originally formatted for pc because i just recently got a mac book pro and it's my primary computer. well on to the hard drive trouble that is related i'm borrowing my friends external to get a 8 gig file from my pc to my mac. it's formatted in fat32(windows and mac read) but that format only allows for a 4 gig max to be put on it at one time. so i guess i'm outta luck there, i've looked at JR split but who knows it that will work. My main q is, i'm going to be getting my own personal external soon and i want to know whats the best way to format it that it will mount on my pc and my mac and allow me to copy more that 4 gigs of stuff on it at a time.

OS X :: Dmg File Unable To Copy To External Hard Drive?

Aug 15, 2009

I have OSX leopard as a disc image on my desktop. When I try to copy the .dmg file over to my external hard drive it copies for a while, then an error message says it can't copy it over and stops. I'm really confused as this sort of problem doesn't usually happen.

I'm running Tiger 10.4.11 and I want to install Leopard. The Leopard disc image is 6.66GB.

I can't burn it to a DVD either because the discs I have are 4.7GB & the .dmg is 6.66GB. Do I need to buy a bigger DVD blank disc?

Another question is how I should burn the disc. Should I simply burn the .dmg file straight onto a DVD (if I can get one that is big enough!) using Disc Utility?

OS X :: Won't Copy Applications From External Hard Drive On To New Imac

Dec 21, 2009

ive had an imac g4 for 4 years and the other week the logic board gave up, i took it to a mac repair shop who advised me the repair would cost 600 pounds!! i decided its best to invest in a new imac (running snow leopard if that makes a difference) which im going to buy over the holidays.

the old hard drive has been removed, cased and ready to go. i plugged it into my girlfriends macbook which read it as an external drive... great so far

here comes the question. the drive has all my apps and personal bits which i dont want to loose or reinstall. do i simply drag the applications across on to my new machine? primally interested in iphoto and itunes. will i loose these music files and 4 years of photos?, or can i navigate into the app on the hard drive and drag the files into the new itunes/iphotos on the new machine?

MacBook :: Can't Copy Files To External Hard Drive

May 26, 2012

I have had both my MacBook and external hard drive for over three years now, and have never had a problem. In the last week, my external hard drive stopped letting me copy files onto it. When you try to drag and drop it just comes up with the blocked symbol. I have tested this with other hard drives as well and keep getting the same error. I've read other forums where it seems the answer is just to reformat the hard drive to the correct format, but I've never had a problem before so it seems strange that the format would just suddenly change.

OS X :: External Hard Drive Error Code (-50) When Copy The Files

Jan 11, 2011

I have an external 2TB Western Digital Caviar drive hooked up to my 2006 iMac through a docking bay and USB 2.0. I'm running 10.6.6 and the drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended. It's my media and backup drive and I'm always copying stuff to and from it. All was well and good with the setup and I had no problems for probably 5 or 6 months. Just around Christmas, though, I started getting alerts when trying to copy files over to the drive. Error Code: -50.

Basically, I can still view/read files on the drive and play songs in iTunes, but if I try to rip a CD, iTunes hangs and dies. If I try to copy any file over using the Finder or empty the trash with files from that drive, I get the -50 code and alert. A restart will fix the problem for a little while but then it's back after maybe 30 minutes or so that's obviously not a good long-term solution. This page claims it is an "Error in user parameter list" but I have no idea what that means. I've done a bunch of Googling, but people are saying it's anything from problems with networked NTFS drives (which it's not for me) or that it's a disk permissions issue (no bootable system on the drive).

Software :: Cannot Copy Large Files To External Hard Drive

I have a 38gb iMovie file on my MacBook. I also have a 160gb external HDD. I want to copy the file across, sounds simple right? It will start copying happily but when it gets to about 8-10gb I get this error message (EVERY TIME!): Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error has occurred (Error code -1309). I really do not want to delete this file as it is a wedding video I did for a friend only a few months ago. I am trying to copy across to a Freecom II drive using USB.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Cannot Copy IPhoto Library To External Hard Drive

Jun 6, 2012

Recently, despite careful file management my internal hard drive has reached its capacity so I purchased a 2TB WD My Book to move many of my files to to make room. After reformatting it (Mac OS Extended Journaling) starting copying stuff over but I struck a problem when I tried copying my iphoto library file over. Its about 47gig and every time i try it begins to copy but then it suddenly stops around 600mb saying it cant read or write something in the file.†Is the file too big? Do I need to format the drive it differently? Hopefully not as I've already moved a heap of files over.

OS X :: Carbon Copy Clone - Size / Brand External Hard Drive

Nov 1, 2010

I have a MacBook from Christmas 2009. I'm very happy with it. I am using an external HD, a Western Digital Passport with 500 GB for my Time Machine backups. The MacBook seems to have a 250GB hard drive, but no firewire connection. So far I have used up about half of my WD Passport external with Time Machine backups. I have about 6500 photos and almost 12GB of iTunes music, and I don't want a catastrophic failure to cause me to lose it all. In addition to the Time Machine backup, I'm considering using Carbon Copy Clone with an additional external hard drive for a complete backup. I'm not very Mac or programming savvy, so I'm looking for an idiot proof method. What do you guys think of CCC, and what size/brand external HD do you recommend? I think CCC has to have an HFS+ formatted drive. I don't want to keep it connected all the time, but I would like to occasionally clone the MacBook harddrive so I always have a fairly current bootable backup.
