OS X :: Application Which Need To Be Locked Using Password?
Apr 8, 2009
I have couple question that I would like to know.
1. Is there any way that I can give passwords to a specific folder so that everytime I want to open it, it will prompt for a password?
2. Same thing as number 1, but this one is the application which need to be locked using password.

I use an external hard drive for Time Machine backups and to store some larger video files in a folder called Videos. The Videos folder on the external drive is now locked and I can't unlock it. I go to Get Info, hit the lock icon and enter my password, but the "Locked" checkbox is greyed out in the General section. In the Sharing and Permissions section, instead of displaying my name, it says "Fetching . . ." and I can't change the Privilege from "Write Only".Â

I can't seem to edit any pictures with Preview anymore since I upgraded to Lion. Every time I try to save an image after resizing or whatever, it says the file is locked. If I check the info of the file the "locked" checkmark is unchecked. And I have all the permissions to the file. Tried everything, switched the "lock after 2 weeks" thing of in Time Machine (even though tha would probably not help: images I took today are still "locked" in Preview), tried copying them and then saving them, and tried to lock them and then unlock them, but I can't seem to edit and save them.

Getting a message within photoshop that files cannot be saved as they are locked. I check the same files with 'Get Info' and the locked file box is unchecked. I have changed file permissions on the entire disc so that everyone can read/write but still the same message. Tried terminal command to uncheck flags also to no avail. I can do save as but a little frustrating. Is there a workaround to get all my files back onside?
This is a new disc that I may have installed without due care to permissions/ownership when I formatted it.

I've just purchased a MacBook Pro a few months ago. There are sometimes I lend my MBP to my friends. However, there is a few applications I don't want them to open without my permission (such as iPhoto, iTunes). I can simply hide it away, but there are some know how to find it. I really wanna create a password for those apps. Is there any way?

I've installed an application in my mac. Now that I try to run it I see this window, asking me for system credentials. (URL:: ......)I 've given my admin password many times in many installations. But I never used the system keychain. In fact, I give 'admin' as username, and my computer password, and it is not accepted. So, the application do not run. Additionally I discovered that there is system password that I do not even know. Can you help me find out what is going on with this password and finally run the application?

My little sister constantly gets on my computer, which is fine, except for when she opens itunes. I have songs that are explicit and don't want her to listen to. Is there any way to have itunes require a password when clicked on in the dock, so that itunes would not open without my password. I realize that I could just log out each time or require the password when waking from sleep, but really itunes is the only app I don't want her opening.

I have an application on my desktop that is attached to a webserver updating account that I need to modify the settings for. Problem is, I've forgotten the password and their 'forgot password' thing isn't responding after a few hours. If I could just reveal the password that's saved on the desktop application then I wouldn't have to mess with it. I looked all though Keychain, but it doesn't seem to be anywhere in there. Back in PC days there were tons of applications that could just reveal what was behind the little dots. After about 20 minutes of searching, it seems that the mac world offers no such convenience. Anyone know some other way around this? I mean, it must be stored somewhere on here. The application is remembering the password.

I have problems sending mail to people (not everybody) since Google obliged me to change my password on my Google account (attempt breaking-in apparently).
It took me a long time to re-configure everything, I choose the "double" protection from Google (with sms), and my Mac asked me this morning to give several times my Apple ID password, for iMessage, Face Time, etc...)
Now it's not possible to send a mail to my office. It is when I send it via website of Google, NOT when I use "Mail" on my Mac.
This is the message (partly in dutch) :Â Â Application-specific password required. Learn more at [URL] .....

Not infrequently I get an error message on my iMac's screen saying an application (especially "syncdefaultsd" and "Safari") wants the "login" password. I don't know what this is? If I use the password I would use to login manually the error screen rejects it.If I click the error message a couple of times it goes away. Nothing seems to change with the computer's operation, but it doesn't reassure me that something may be going onside 10.7.3 What is the password the application wants and where can I find it?Â

I was looking to modify OSX's main menu, y'know, top left, with the apple? I was trying to remove a button.
I had activated the root user account, and successfully modded the menu to add characters to one of the buttons. The file I edited was in here:
/System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/frameworks/HIToolbox.framework/Resources/English.lproj/ (after this I get fuzzy)/SystemMenu/Objects.xml
I don' remember the exact name, nor do I have access to it... as once I had successfully modded the menu the first time, I tried commenting out the menu object altogether in the XML file, and when I rebooted, I couldn't log on!
Whenever I clicked a user and started typing in the password box, no *** password characters were displayed, and the computer would go back a step, and ask me to chose a user again! The keyboard was working, as I was able to go to the Boot manager and choose to boot off a CD. I am reinstalling right now to fix the issue (the computer needs to be used ASAP), but I am curious as to what the problem may have been. It seems like with all the menu mods out there, this modification would not be unusual.

I am locked out of my Macbook. I inadvertently threw a very important file in the trash and shut down the computer. Now I can't get back in. Even when I use the master password it sends me to a dialogue box to create a new password but won't accept anything. If I have to reinstall my system that's ok but is there any way to retrieve my files, photos, etc..

I was trying to install Snow Leopard on my MBA via a remote DVD drive on my PC. The installation took about an hour and I got to the screen that says "Install Successful". It said that the computer needed to be rebooted and I clicked the button at the bottom of the screen that said "Restart".
When I did that, I got the colored pinwheel and it's been sitting like that for the last 20 minutes.
This is my first Mac and I don't know much about them so it figures it would happen to me. What should I do?

I just put a 25 dollar card on to my account and was then prompted by two security questions while trying to make a purchase. I did not put these on here and on further review I found these were added about a month ago. I need to get the questions off in order to make a purchase for the first time on my new mac. Anybody got a solution?

Our Mac Pro crashed, and upon reboot, both the internal raid as well as the external firewire drive that happened to be plugged into the machine at the time, are both 'locked' and we cannot unlock them. We've tried toggling the 'user and permission' choices from the 'custom' setting that they are now showing to read/write... and it just snaps back to 'custom'!
Same if we try to change to just READ or just WRITE...etc...nothing...
Just a gray icon of a LOCK under the icons of the drives, and a warning anytime I try to access them, saying I don't have permission to do so.
I even unplugged the firewire drive and plugged it into another computer and it does the same thing!
And I even made a new ADMIN and tried changing it with that, to no avail.
Everytime I look at either of these drives, those 'users and permissions' toggles are back at 'custom' and they just won't relent!
Oh, and I also flashed PRam and 'Repaired permissions' on the boot drive [yes, the boot drive is working fine]
I need the media that is on these drive... a ton of video media on the internal raid, specifically... So I can't just repartition them from boot disk.
