OS X Yosemite :: Previous Conversations On IMessage Disappeared On Mac?
Dec 10, 2014
I have been using imessage on my laptop, ipad and iphone for months and they were all working fine. However today, I was unable to send any messages on my mac but still could do so on my ipad and iphone. After resigning into my account and restarting my computer, i could receive and send messages again and they all sync to all three of my products. However, the previous messages on my laptop have disappeared. All that I have left are the most recent messages that I've sent to one person. The messages between me and other contacts have disappeared as well. Can I easily recover these messages?

I use iMessage on my iMac, iPhone and iPad. I am signed into iMessage using the same Apple ID on all three devices. I also have the same phone numbers and email addresses activated within iMessage on each device.
When I send or receive messages, iMessage syncs the messages among the three devices. All good so far. But if I delete a conversation on one device, the deletion does not sync to the other two devices. So I have to manually delete the conversation from the other two devices. How to sync conversations within iMessage across devices?

Macbook Pro 15" Mid-2010, Mac OS 10.10.1; iPhone 4S, iOS 7.0.0, Messages
When I receive an iMessage on my iPhone, the message is successfully pushed to my Mac and I get a notification in Notification Center. That's fine. However, when I launch Messages either by clicking the notification when it appears or by opening the app, no conversations appear (window displays "no conversations selected") and after a while it just leaves me with a blank window and only minimize / fullscreen enabled. The majority of options on the dropdown menus are also greyed out.
Considering that the messages themselves are successfully getting pushed to my Mac, I don't think it's an account issue. It seems as though the app is getting hung up trying to load up my conversations.
I originally had this issue on 10.10.0 so I thought that it may have been a bug and updated to 10.10.1. It only started happening a few days ago, I've been running Mac OS 10.10.X since several days after launch with no issues.

iMessage, or message whatever it's called. It's message app but when I try to login shows iMessage screen.Up till last night messages was working fine on my Yosemite Mac, iPod touch and my old iPod touch.
I did the 8.1.2 update on my iPod and when I started my Mac up it asked for an iMessage log in, never did this before. Typed the correct password and it just sits there with the gear wheel spinning beside my Apple id, tried changing DNS, deleted keychain passwords, switched messages off/on on the the other devices as well as iCloud. The other devices still work on the same router. Tried switching from wired, which it usually operates on to wi-fi only and deleted iMessages preferences, nothing.

I took my computer in for servicing, cleaning, etc. Now that it's back, it's "stuck" on the last message I received on it, which is from November. I've receiving my messages on my iPhone, but I'd love to sync them and get them "caught up" on my MacBook Pro.

A few days ago my macbook pro stopped getting iMessages. Interestingly I still get SMS from all of my non-apple friends. I have checked to make sure everything looks right, logged into iCloud account, etc. Double checked on my iPhone as well. My iPad and iPhone still communicate with each other and receive all messages. Running most current OS on all three devices.

I have an iPhone 4s with IOS 8, an iPad 2 with IOS 8, and a mid-2011 iMac running Yosemite. All are updated. The iMessages on my three devices do not sync. An example: This morning I sent an iMessage to a friend from my phone after she sent me a message from her Android phone. The messages do not appear on my iMac or iPad, just on the iPhone. I completely deleted said contact from my contacts on all devices, but when I added her back, the same message/no message situation existed. I read the following about "continuity" on the apple website:
With OS X Yosemite and an iPhone running iOS 8, you can send and receive SMS text messages right from your Mac. So when friends text you — regardless of what phone they have — you can respond from your Mac or your iPhone, whichever is closest.2 All the messages that appear on your iPhone now appear on your Mac, too, so your conversation is up to date on all your devices. You can also start an SMS or iMessage conversation on your Mac by clicking a phone number in Safari, Contacts, Calendar, or Spotlight.

Is there a shortcut for creating a new iMessage from anywhere in OS X? I know it doesn't take a long time to open messages and start a new conversation but it would be nice if there was a shortcut that allowed a new conversation to be started from anywhere. Here is an example of what I am looking for. I accessed this by clicking the messages icon on someone's contact page.

I upgraded from Yosemite 10.10 to 10.10.1 a bit over a week ago. I am using a Mac Pro (Mid-2010). iMessage worked fine after my upgrade from Mavericks 9.5 to Yosemite 10.10. When the 10.10.1 upgrade came out, I upgraded. Now, I cannot activate iMessage. I get a message that basically says my Apple ID is not recognized. The same Apple ID and iMessage work fine on my rMPB (late 2013) running the upgraded Yosemite 10.10.1. I have not, in all my attempts to activate, received the error code that some folks mention.

Yesterday my iPhone abruptly shut off. I thought it was dead but when I plugged it in it said it had battery. Now it will only turn on when I have it plugged into the wall and if I unplug it it'll immediately shut down. Also when it turns on it won't connect to Wifi and cellular service just says "Searching..." so its essentially useless. I'm wondering if theres a way to get my messages on iMessage on my Mac if I don't have it connected to my number yet and I can't access my phone to connect them.

I just noticed that in iMessage, delivery and read receipt times are displayed in 12 hour am/pm clock, even though I have setup the system to use a 24 hour clock. I cannot find a setting in iMessage application to change to 24 hour clock. Have I glossed over a setting or is it not possible to use a 24 hour clock in iMessage?

My problem is related to the iMessage app on my iPhone 5 and MBP Retina. I have not been able to find a suitable answer to this problem in the Apple discussions, however there are discussions relating to syncing of messages, or the lack thereof, but that's not my problem. My problem has to do with deleting messages from one device and then those message being deleted on the other device.
Both devices, iPhone 5 and 15" MBP Retina are up to date (iOS 8.1.1 and OS X Yosemite 10.10.1).
I can send and receive iMessage and SMS texts from both my iPhone as well as the Mac. The synchronization works beautifully!
My problem is this. When I delete a conversation from the message app on the MBP it DOES NOT get deleted on the iPhone iMessage app. Likewise a conversation that is deleted from the iPhone DOES NOT get deleted from the MBP message app. I have tested this by sending a message to myself, which showed up on both devices. I could converse all day long with myself (bad habit!) from both the iPhone and MBP, but when the message was deleted from one device it did not get deleted from the other device. Very annoying!
As an additional issue, under Settings>Messages>Text Message Forwarding my MBP appears twice and only one can be turned on at a time. How can I delete the other device? I can't find where that is set up.

I'm running Yosemite on Mac and iOS 8.1.1 on iPad and iPhone. When i setup Messages on my Mac a couple of months ago all conversations were synced up between all 3 devices. i've continued many of those conversations on my iPad and iPhone but when I opened Messages on my Mac today i noticed that they had stopped syncing about 2 weeks ago. Now when i try to send a message from my Mac it sends it as SMS not as iMessage. how to correct both the SMS issue but more importantly the sync?

Why can't I open and answer an instant imessage notification using just one key(such as enter key)? If I shouldn't, what's the use of answering right from notification? I can instead, move my mouse to the app, right?

Ever since upgrading to Yosemite OS X on my MacBook pro, I've been unable to view pictures that I send or receive via SMS Text and iMessage on my phone, and receive via AIM, within iMessage on my computer.
All images show up as their file name only, and cannot be viewed or downloaded (see attached screen shots.)
I can view the images fine on my phone, just not on the computer. I've played around with iMessage settings and nothing seems to work.

I recently upgraded to Mac Yosemite...30min ago, I was on the Chrome browser and happened to throw the browser to the right. Fyi, I'm not using mighty mouse and have only 1 monitor. When I tried to bring it back to the center, I couldn't find it in anywhere on the right side of the monitor. It was gone.
But in the dock, chrome was showing that it's up and running just fine. I was also able to see that all the tabs were still open. Thinking it's some glitch, I restarted the computer but when I clicked on Chrome, the issue remained same. And even after uninstalled, reinstalled Chrome!I can see the top menu (as in the attached pics, the open browser is firefox) but browser doesn't appear at all.
No matter what I try so far, it just doesn't work. I can also click on those top menu, such as preference or history, but no window would pop up.
First I thought it was Chrome issue. But when I tried moving Firefox to the right, but hoping it at the edge of the right side of the screen, firefox was also about to disappear. The browser became very transparent. Because I still had Safari to use, I let go of the browser when it turned super transparent, then pshhhhhht! It's gone, too. Now firefox is showing the exactly same symptoms: open in the dock and the top menu but no browser, etc.

Folders disappeared from sidebar. I found them in the trash under recovered folders. Those files coincidentally are all my work documents. Not only all my work but also microsoft related such as pdfs, pptx, etc. 'Put back' not an option since files are in different formats. I am unable to open any. These are not just temp unimportant files, I must find a way to restore all contents unharmed. I have 4 recovered folders in the trash. I need to see my files as they were 12h ago.

I don't like that conversations are linked together in mail. It always scares me that I sent something to someone who it wasn't intended for. Sometimes the conversations are relevant but most of the time one email has absolutely nothing to do with another email so I don't see why they are linked together. I have looked all through the mail preferences but I don't see any options to change it.

I'm getting super annoyed since apple has started condensing the conversation in mail in the view window.
They have added the "See More from xxxxxxx" in the middle on the converations view pane.
How can you have those always automatically expand? It's a super pain, because every single conversation I have to look at what I last wrote.

i also can't click on anything on the desktop, the only thing that is there and works are the words on the top, stopping at help. Also after every word i write, a pop up says 'alert cannot contact spell checker,' When i open safari i also cannot get it back to finder, and i can't search anything on the computer because after the second letter the screen flashes.
It started this morning i tried to write something in stickies and the computer went crazy to a blue screen and the loading circle started spinning around so i shut it down, when i loaded it up i had all these problems.
I have iBook g4 from 2005. What should i do, i don't know anything about computers. I tried searching online i tried to use killall Dock in terminal it didn't work, it said no matching processes were found.
