I see several posts about a line across the screen suddenly appearing. The only advice seems to be to get the computer replaced. I'd like to avoid this, obviously, as it leaves me without a computer and with a lot of work to do reinstalling software on a new one. I have not had any problems with the computer, then I installed the firmware update a few days ago (I think it was an update from February? -- something like an "IOE update"?)Â
This morning, I closed the monitor and the fan kept running for minutes. I opened it up again and clicked "apple" > Sleep. And the display shut off. But the fan kept on blowing. Finally it shut off. But then it started back up. This happened several times. Finally I shut off the computer. Now, Sleep appears to work fine again.Â
Then this evening I was browsing Reddit and when I clicked on a link, suddenly a row of pixels went out (see picture). I, at first, thought it was some weird pop up. But it persists through restart, and permission repair, and logging in with different users. I tried playing with new desktop backgrounds. This worked at first, then, for some reason, the computer wasn't accepting new desktop choices. Logging out, then back in fixed the problem. But that is sort of weird too.Â
Are these issues related? Most important to me right now is this line across the screen. Incidentallly, at first the line was of varying shades of gray. Now it appears to be black. Is there a way that Apple can simply put my current hard drive into a new computer for me? This is a late 2011 macbook pro.

Yesterday a vertical blue line appeared on my Mac display, which can be seen all the time but not when it is turned off.I can't make a screenshot off it, you can't see it on them.My Warranty just ran out one month ago.And I didn't used the imac very often, wasn't much gaming or running it the whole day, just using it for school works.Actually I am very disappointed of Apple, bought my first imac because I thought instead of a PC it would last 4 years at least.

I have a G4, dual 450, 1G Ram running 10.4.11. Recently after downloading and opening an .rar file, a file named .DS_Store appeared on the desktop. I have since deleted the .rar file, but cannot delete the .DS file. It is appearing now in all of my programs, including my camera when I plug it in. I've tried ClamXav, MacScan, and DnsChangerRemovaltool, also What'sKeepingMe, but nothing can remove it. Info says it's a document, 16 KB, and it reads as date created the last time I turned the machine on. Can anyone tell me what this is and how I can get rid of it?

I have just updated my HD to a SSD and noticed in the sidebar under Places I have the usual listing of Desktop, Home and Documents but another file that's never been there before has appeared. How can I delete it permanently? Searching for the file name on the computer brings no results. It look like a zip file that ends with 3x.gz.

I have been writing a book using Text Edit RTF for composition, and then exporting to PDF.
Before Yosemite, when I changed the width of the RTF writing window (say, from 65 letters per line to 75 letters per line), and then exported to PDF, the PDF reflected the change in letter count - IE the PDF now would show 75 letters per line, just like the RTF did.
Now, with Yosemite, the letter count stays the same in the exported PDF no matter how many letters per line are in the RTF before export.
This is a big problem for me because I was formatting the pages based on 70 letters-per-line and now I am getting PDFs that have 90+ letters per line. This means that all the headings that I had at the top of pages are showing up a few lines either way from the top. This messes up the look of the pages and makes it harder for the reader to spot topics they want to focus on.
Any way to get the letter count to stay the same in the PDF export as it is in the RTF/Text Edit page before export?

When I tried to type the letter 'o' in Terminal, the application just wouldn't let me and keeps flashing every time I press the 'o' key. I searched the internet but can't find the solution for this issue. Disabling me from typing this certain alphabet has caused me a lot of inconvenience..

Why does Mac OX 10.6.8 keep making copies of a file anytime I download, copy, or move a file? It will copy, dowload or move the file, then begin making copies until I reboot. This makes it impossible to deal wit hfiles unless I want to spend a lot of time rebooting after every time, then deleting all the redundant copies.

I have thousands of text files that are named with random unique numerical ID in a specific folder. The problem is I want to be able to do quick sort of the files by a category. The category of each text file is always written as the fourth line of each text file. I would like to write an Applescript to append the fourth line of the text file onto the file name with a underscore in-between. (i.e. Category_1235678.txt).

Given the disaster with Lion 10.7.3 and how it writes passwords in plaintext to secure.log I have migrated to FileVault 2. Now I want to securely delete the secure.log file. With the finder I can delete a file and empty the trash securely. But is there a way to remove files securely from the command line?

I have a macbook pro operating on OS X software, version 10.6.8. I am trying to upgrade to the newest version (I'm clearly behind, I know) and when I click "get" in the app store the download drops into the dock and reads "OS X Yosemite--waiting" and the only option is to click "cancel download". I've restarted the download twice and restarted the computer once.
