OS X :: Which Video Cable To Use
May 14, 2010
my company has been given a PowerPC, which I believe is a Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver). It's Model number is M8493. For video output, it has a ADC and VGA connections (both female).
We have a Cinema Display, and it's model number is A1081 that has a DVI-D (male) cable.
Anyway, basicly I was wondering whether if I had a VGA cable to connect to the PowerPC and then used a VGA to DVI-D converter if the display will work.
I've looked under the ACD to DVI adapter router but I can't find any in the UK so I'm wondering if the VGA to DVI converter will be the answer.

I have spent a better part of an hour searching for an answer on MR and google -- no luck!. My Mac Pro sits in a corner underneath my rather large desk and the cable needs to be at least 4 feet long (preferably >4.5 feet).

I have a macbook (Intel Core Duo running at 2.16) which I would like to use with an external monitor or a video projector. Although I have the adapter I used with my old iBook G3 500, it won't fit into the monitor port on my MacBook, and I don't know what to get.
If I could see pictures instead of just reading the various initials of the different connectors,

I use my macbook with an external monitor at home. When I visit my clients, I unplug the cable and travel with just the macbook. When I use the macbook at home, I have it sitting on a cheapo stand that tilts the laptop to improve ventilation at the bottom. I notice that the video adapter cable dangles on the side and this might be introducing some strain on the video connector.
Is there a connector or jig that will reduce this strain? e.g. the cinematic screen uses a connector that combines video and power connection and this seems to be nice and solid. Any such third-party product exist? alternatively, has there been any 'lifehacker' type of solution for this?

Do you guys think that Apple would release a firmware update for the Mini Display port so that it can send both Audio and Video through a single cable on a late 2009 13" MBP?
They have done it on the New MBP but yeah it sucks to connect/carry 2 cables all the time on my MBP I bought in Oct 2009

I am trying to get my girlfriend's parents a cable that will hook their 2005 Mac Mini to their HDTV. I don't know the specs on the mini, so I'm wondering what cable I will need. I know it needs to be something -> HDMI. Is the video out port on the mini a DVI?

I was wondering how I could file share, or make the whole Hard Drive (HDD) accessible to another computer. The two other computers I have are a Toshiba Laptop with Ethernet and USB, and a iMac Intel with Firewire, USB, and Ethernet. Putting these to use along with:Three Ethernet Cables Now how do I get the whole HDD visible to the others computers (either/both) and be able to write to it? Also, I do not want to use CDs and have no CDs that came with the computers. I want to put Xubuntu on the eMac and Debian on the iMacs and erase the rest of the Hard Drives. The computers getting this are the iMac G3s and the eMac G4 in my Signature.

I have a Mac Pro with an optical line in. I bought a cable and connected it to the Mac Pro, but the receiver(where I want to plug the line in) is old and only received optical. Is there some sort of adapter that would convert the connect that doesn't cost $200? I was able to connect an analog cable from the front of the mac pro's headphone jack into the back of the receiver, but the sound isn't really the greatest.

Quick question - I have a cable line running from my wall to my cable modem, which in turn connects via ethernet cable to an AEBS. The AEBS provides wireless connectivity to four Macs.
Can I split the cable line in my room so that I may watch TV, or would this cut my download/upload bandwidth in half?

Well I got rid of the quicksilvers since they died. Power supplys gave out and took the motherboards, So I sold what was left on EBAY.
My G4 Ethernet was sold to a co-worked and he is quite happy.
And I got this off ebay today:
Dual 1.8GHz PowerPC G5Procs
2GB RAM (2 x 1GB PC3200U DDR SDRAM)
Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-117D
Samsung HD160JJ/P 160GB SATA HDD (not apple labeled, not original to this system)
(1) Power Cord
pci106b,9 PCI Ethernet Controller
Well I didnt' read the fine print and BAZINGA! I noticed that it comes without a video card.
So For video editing, watching hulu and youtube and netflix What do you guys recommend.
I do have a PCI GEforce at home with 512 megs for PC and I was wondering if I could flash it and if so, does anyone know of a good walkthrough?

Anyone know of a Mac OS X software that will capture streaming video and save in a playable format in Mac OS X? Kind of like Download Helper for Firefox captures FLV, MP4, MP3, etc... and saves it to your hard drive.

Someone at work recorded a screen capture video. Within the frame, there's good material but a lot of garbage around the edges that I don't want (what Sally Hogshead would call "screen crapture"). The good stuff lasts the entire duration of the clip, is not perfectly centered, and does not move at all in its placement or change size throughout the clip.
If I crop or trim, I can eliminate the garbage, either making it transparent or black (there's no other clip beneath it to show through) easily enough. Is there a way to then export just the desired portion of the video frame (the non-cropped good stuff) as its own video at a smaller frame size?

I was watching Apple's event on quicktime , and the whole 1:30 hour show streamed with no pre-downloading on my slow internet connection(512kbs at best) while youtube videos of 5 and 10 min will take very long time to load, actually they won't stream ever, all the time they will need to be downloaded at first, this goes for html5 AND flash. what is this technology apple is using to stream video? Why can't other websites utilize it as it is much more convenient? can you benefit using it on your own personal website?
