OS X :: What Are The Correct Permission Settings For The Internal Hdd
Jun 15, 2009
So I'm having a little issue with CandyBar not giving me a dialogbox to enter my password when changing the internal harddrive icon. I'm therefore asking what the correct permissions are for the internal harddrive?
Mine are(for Macintosh HD):
system: Read & Write
admin: Read only
everyone: Read only
Does Mac OS X Disk Utilities correct permission on all the files and folders on the machine? or is it only on systems folders? If I need to correct permission on every file and folder on the machine, how do I do so?
I can't get any sound out of my G5. I've checked all my settings, and they're correct (I believe). I have a Texas Instruments built in sound card (TAS3004). I bought the machine a year ago used (it was a demo) and it's never had sound since I set it up.
Information: G5 Dual 1.8 Mac OS X (10.4) 80GB Drive, 2.25GB RAM
I have an internal drive I've partitioned. I want to give my kids access to only one partition. When I use the 'get info' on a drive, I get 3 names for access. Me, '(unknown)' and 'everyone'. I cannot access the + and - below. even though the '+' is black and not grey. When I click on it, no list of users appears and the box disappears. It appears taht the finder is re-launched.

I have tried plugging in headphones, and when i take them out, no red light appears like others say. Also, in the sound settings, there is no built in speakers to click on. All of this happened after I deleted a program off my computer, and restarted it. Once I restarted the computer, it stayed on the startup screen so i did the safe start (hold shift while you press the power button).
Regardless of the settings, I can only get my Mini to play through its internal speaker. For the past several months I've had it hooked up to a PeachTreee Decco2 through the optical port, and it worked fine.Â
Today I tried to play some music, and found that the Mini wasn't recognizing the optical port anymore. So after a couple of hours of futzing around with it (including updating Lion and repairing permissions) it still no longer recognizes the optical output.Â
I know that nobody has made any changes to the Mini, because it isn't attached to any input devices. I control it over my wireless network using the Apple Screen Sharing app.Â
I have a G5 Duel 2GHz Power PC, Recently I was losing the time, date and wireless settings so I assumed as my machine is now 4 years old the PRAM battery was up for renewal. This has now been replaced but I'm still losing my settings, not all the time but randomly, sometimes I lose my wireless key sometimes I lose time and date sometimes both, this can happen daily.
I have removed the (New) Battery and checked the voltage and it reads 3.6 Volts, I haven't checked this under load though, so presuming that the battery is OK, what else could cause this.. a failing System Board?
I want to keep my applications etc on one internal HD and use my second internal HD as a back up.I am a graphic designer, and i have been backing up to an external LACIE Porche 160 Gig firewire HD. This has worked fine, but...My second internal HD (112 gig?) is still loaded with 10.3 and has adobe CS2 on it along with some other crap that I no longer need.I have loaded Adobe CS3 on my primary drive and have all the files I need on that one...What is the best way to set up my second HD as a "slave" drive to improve the performance of my G5 dual 2 Ghz??Will there be any issues now that I loaded Leopard on the primary HD?

I recently purchased a new SSD and would like to input that into my MBP 2012. If I have a partition on my external HDD that contains the carbon copy of my MBP, am I able to clone it into my SSD after I have installed it in the MBP through the USB?Â

I have had my MacBook Pro now for a little over 2 yrs and I was very frustrated I could not change any print options in any application. I know that the Triangle button expands print options screen but when I do, I have only two print choices. It gave me Standard or Page Attributes in Office and any other App it is Standard and Last used settings. I can't print in Draft, Best or other setting because it does not even give them as a choice. I have two high end color photo printers, Canon i9900 and Epson Photo series and an old HP830 series. Any app I tried to print from and the same thing. I tried to capture the options on the choices but it would not grab that part of the image but here is my screen shot. I searched many forums and I still get the same answer so something else is not letting me change things so I figured best to ask since I am a 20 year win user now switched to Mac. Well right after I posted this question, my wife found the answer. I never though to check the application NAME in the print setting screen. Example, in the screenshot I am using Preview. I never thought to hit the up/down arrow next to the Preview label and wouldn't you know, that is were the quality and several other settings were. I felt pretty stupid that it took 2 years to figure this out but if I posted the answer maybe someone else will not have to take as long as I did to change their print quality!
I've purchased my Mac book from a friend. It still has his name and password on which he cannot remember. Am i correct in assuming that if I restore it to the origianl factory settings then it will erase his settings. Also will i need anything erlse with the start up like serial numbers, auth codes etc?
I did a clean 10.6 install and forgot to backup the ssh key. Now when I try to ssh into the server i get this: Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)? yes Warning: Permanently added 'macpro,10.0.1.20' (RSA) to the list of known hosts. Permission denied (publickey,keyboard-interactive).
I've just done a fresh install of Leopard to see if it would clear off some of these permission errors. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've tried OnyX, booting off Install CD.
I just did a clean install, and load my backup from Time Machine. When I tried to repair permission, I got lots of errors. It says it is being repaired.. but the next time I run, the problem retains. And there is also one SUID problem that has not been repaired..

I'm attempting to duplicate the functionality exposed by Apple's signature server, by entering (/private/etc/hosts) into the command line of Terminal Bash. I'm doing this to downgrade the firmware in my iphone 3gs from 3.1.2 to 3.0.1. I've been receiving a (permission denied) response for my efforts. I've gone into "Disk Utility and added myself as a "root user". However, that doesn't seem to correct the permission denied issue. Perhaps I didn't correctly add myself as a root user.
recently a friend of mine advised me to check the disk permissions via the disk utility and i did. i have attached the result but how can i fix those errors and is it even important or i can just leave them as it is?
This pc keeps showing up in the finder under "shared" and I cannot delete it. I have everything in the sharing menu in system prefrences unchecked, but it is still there.
I downloaded a game that was the Mac version, but when I try to launch my laptop, it says I do not have permission. How do I change permission for this game?Â
I've been trying for weeks to update my MacBook Pro to either OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 or 10.9.3 but it isn't working. When I open Software Update, it tells me that I have an update available (OS X Update Combined 10.9.3), but when I click Update and agree to restarting, it says "An error has occurred. The file couldn't be saved because you don't have permission.(513)" Additionally, the update is listed under Updates Installed in the Last 30 Days. However, when I click on About This Mac, it says that I am running 10.9.1.Â
I tried downloading the update from the Apple Website (OSXUpdCombo10.9.3.dmg) and after installing/restarting, when I login and click About This Mac, it still says 10.9.1.
I was using my MBP when I noticed that the display (the built in one) looked a little washed out. To make sure my color profile was set to the correct one, I opened up the display panel in System Preferences. The moment I opened it, the display snapped back to its regular appearance. As far as I can tell, it goes into the washed out version after going to screensaver and coming back, and going into display prefs is the only way to restore it. Anyone seen this before or know how to keep it from doing this?
I installed Perian the other day and decided I wanted to get rid of it. I just dragged the icon from applications as well as the dmg to the bin. Is that the correct method to 'uninstall' something?
After doing that I can still see Perian from the other section in settings as well as if I right click on a video it gives me settings for perian. How do I properly uninstall something and get rid of it from everywhere?
We got a refurbished Alu MB for an intern and the time is not displaying properly. If I check the "Set date & time automatically", the digital and analog clock is showing different times. See picture. Also, when I go in Time Zone, I set Eastern time, it will set it, but when I go back to preference, it sets back to GMT.
I keep getting the annoying window that says "Enter Password for account "Mobile Me"- I'm certain the password is correct! I have even deled the email account and added it in, and still cannot get it to work
I am trying to set a folder permission to include (apache) ... this can be seen in a screenshot on setting up webdav for dropbox: I cannot seem to get it... every time I hit the "+" button, there is no and I can't manually add it
I've used sudo before successfully, but suddenly it doesn't work anymore! For example, I try setting a shutdown timer using:
Code: sudo shutdown -h +60 or sudo pmset disksleep 30 or even just sudo and get Code: sudo: can't open /private/etc/sudoers: Permission denied Just typing sudo alone results in the same error.
I've tried searching and following other threads on this topic to no avail. Repairing permissions from disk utility didn't help either.
I have this card reader. I have this brand new SD card. When I plug the card reader in and put the SD card in. The card reader blinks the light and then, on my disk utility. All I see is this: So it does not show up on the desktop. It seems I cant mount it. I cant erase it or anything...it says "permission denied" when I try to format it. I have a Mac Pro too.
