MacBook :: Internet Says Have Internet But Wont Connect - Cannot Open System Preferences Or Internet Preferences

May 10, 2009

I have a macbook a little over a year old. It's my first mac and I love it. Yesterday though it started acting really weird. I first noticed that it was really, really hot and the fan was running. I turned it off and back on and here's what I found out:

Applications are being deleted from macbook. ITunes, IPhoto, iChat have clear question marks over icon. There are 8-10 blank spaces in the Applications folder where applications have been deleted. However, data is still there (ex. pictures still there, but no iPhoto).

Internet= Says I have internet but wont connect.

Cannot open " System Preferences" or "Internet Preferences".

If connected to home computer will connect to internet and allowed to open internet preferences but still no system preferences.

If shut down....takes a while to come back on and starts up 2-3 times.

Also "Preview" is gone. Now " ColorSync Utility" opens.

Is this my hard drive dying? I'm tech challenged, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

MacBook Pro :: Unable To Connect To Internet Via Ethernet Or Wi-fi / Internet Connects In Safe-mode

Jan 1, 2010

I'm running OSX 10.5.8 on a Macbook Pro, and today I've been unable to connect to the internet via ethernet or wi-fi, unless I'm in safe mode. Then everything seems to work as it should, which makes me believe that this is a software issue rather than a hardware problem. I've tried making a new account with administrator priveleges, but that doesn't solve my issue. Does anyone have any advice on how I can connect to the internet under my normal user account, rather than in safe mode? I should note that I won't be able to get my hands on my repair CD or perform a clean install of OSX because that stuff is at home, and I'm in college. Also, I'm at a university and don't have a router. I just use the campus-wide wi-fi. Finally, my roommate has no problem accessing the internet in our room via ethernet or wi-fi, but I do. Thanks for the help everyone.

MacBook Pro :: Programs Requiring Internet Aren't Working, Even Though Internet Is Connected?

May 4, 2012

My Macbook Pro was working fine when suddenly Safari froze, so I forced quit. After opening Safari again, the page just stayed white and wouldn't load. None of my other programs requiring internet are working either (ie. AIM, Skype), even though my internet connection is listed as connected and other devices using Wifi are working perfectly. Could this be some sort of virus?

MacBook Pro :: Slow Loading Of Internet Upon Starting An Internet Browser

Apr 28, 2012

I have a macbook pro and have recently noticed that when initially loading any of, google chrome, firefox or safari it takes a very long time for the internet to load the webpages.

It says that there is a full wireless connection but will not load the webpage.

Once the webpage has finally loaded after about a minute, subsequent browsing is as fast as can be expected upon my broadband connection, loading pages in <1s.

However the problem reappears whenever I open a new window, or anything else that might use the internet such as the app store, itunes or apple software update.

Intel Mac :: When Sharing Internet Through Ethernet Wireless Internet Dies

May 22, 2012

For specific reasons, I needed to connect my Synology DS211 NAS to my iMac directly via its ethernet port.  I discovered that if I share my wireless internet connection (coming from my cable modem/wireless router) from wireless to ethernet, then the NAS would get the IP stuff it needed to show up. did that, voila, NAS is acting like a glorified external hard drive.  BUT, when I did that, I lost all internet connectivity on my iMac.  Still have full wireless signal.  preferences pane says I'm fully connected to my network with an IP address, but safari always fails to pull up any webpages, saying I'm not connected to the internet. As soon as  turn off the ethernet PORT, it all starts working again.  And to make it even crazier, I discovered that if I leave sharing my wireless internet via my ethernet port ON, but turn off the ethernet port (in pref pane), I can STILL access the NAS just like before.  That makes no sense - I'm sharing my internet via a port I have turned off, but it works? Anyway, why would Iose my airport wireless internet connection when the ethernet port is on - configured manually?

Mac Pro :: Password Protect Internet Access To Avoid Others To Connect To Internet?

May 29, 2012

currently I connect to the internet by doing this: Go to System Preferences / Network. Then I select my internet provider name on the left pane and finally click on the Connect button. That's all. This internet profile has a PPoE service name, an account name and a password. My internet connection uses a cable DLink router (it's not wireless).

Question:

1) Does the password I mentioned above mean that my neighbors can't access my internet, or are they able to do that and, in this case, I need to set another password somewhere else?

2) If I need another password, how and where do I set it,

Any applications that needs to wake up my Mac just won't. I have no clue what is wrong and why these won't work.

For example:

-EyeTV3 (for show recordings)

I really want to get this fixed. Now I can't rely on Awaken or EyeTV to really do anything unless I'm there waking up my Mac on time. And I don't want to leave my Mac awake 24/7.

Mac Pro :: Mac Pro Black Screen On Wake-up

Nov 25, 2010

Just got a new Mac pro and installed an SSD as the boot drive. I was downloading some apple software updates and left the machine alone to download for an hour.Came back and it was asleep or hibernating (is there a difference?)At that point I clicked the mouse and I could hear it start back up but NOTHING came on the screen, just black.I could press a key on the keyboard and hear the error type noise so the desktop was active, just not being displayed.

I disconnected my mini display port (I have a 24' Apple cinema LED display) and plugged it into the second mini display port on the back and it came back on.Anyone know what this could be?A result of an SSD boot drive or do I need my LED display plugging into a particular mini display port out of the 2 on the graphics card?

Mac Pro :: Locking Up After Wake From Sleep?

Jan 6, 2011

My Mac Pro 1,1 with a recently installed 120 GB OWC SSD Rev. 343A has been locking up (spinning beach ball) mostly on the "Enter your Password" screen when waking up from full sleep or displays going to sleep. I have to perform a hard reboot then it works fine, til it falls asleep and I have to wake it up. If I put it to sleep via the Menu it wakes up normally without issue. I've run Disk Utility, says it's fine. Repaired permissions. Ran the daily, weekly and monthly scripts. Cleaned my Cache with Onyx (not sure what else I could do with it)

Disksomnia is installed for FCP, to keep the disks spinning, never was a problem before. The SSD is the only major change in recent times.

Any knowledge or thoughts as to what I could do to find the problem?

Computer's up to date OS wise, 10.6.5, 12 GB Ram, Seagate 750's HDD's in the three other bays, Blackmagic card PCI, eSATA extender cable for two OWC Enclosures, other FW800 external HD's, NVIDIA Geforce 8600 GT & 7300 GT video cards for three monitors.

MacBook Pro :: Won't Wake Out Of Sleep?

Jul 11, 2007

I put my 3 day old MBP to sleep last night with a 90% battery level (with the A/C adapter unplugged). I had calibrated the battery the day before. This morning, when I opened the lid, nothing happened. I thought this was odd. I then pressed the power button and heard about 1 second of the startup tone and then nothing. I repeated this twice more with the same result. I then plugged in the A/C adapter and the MBP booted up. The battery level was 86%. What do you think has caused this? Do I have a defective battery or something more serious?

MacBook :: Won't Wake From Sleep

Feb 3, 2009

However, twice now when I've run the battery down (as recommended to keep the battery healthy), and then put it to sleep and plug it in, when I try to wake it up later, it won't start. Powering on and off just lead to a little "click-whirr" and the power light pops on and off, but no action. I called applecare and they said to unplug it, take the battery out, leave it out for a bit, then put it back in, then plug it back in, and restart it. It worked (although the second such crash, it took two tries for unclear reasons). Needless to say, this is a bit frustrating. Is this a known problem? Should I do something to avoid it? Is it a lemon?

MacBook Pro :: How To Prevent Wake On USB

I would like to connect one of those Master/Slave Powersplitters to my Macbook Pro when I'm at home.

However, this has given me an issue.

When I choose Sleep, the Macbook goes to sleep, and a few seconds after the the splitter will turn off my screen, speakers, Printer and all other accesories.

But as soon as this happens, The Mac wakes up again.

For simplicity at home I have one USB connected to the mac, that goes to the built in USB hub of the screen.
I tried to disconnect everything from the hub leaving only the hub connected.

Mac Pro :: Cyberpower UPS Won't Wake Sleeping?

Mar 10, 2009

Mac Pro: 2 x 2.66

UPS: CYBER POWER CP1500LCD, USB plugged directly into MP, using OS X Energy Saver prefpane (no 3rd party programs)

Everything is fine when the MP is awake and running normally.

But if I sleep it, then kill power to the circuit the UPS is on, it won't wake up. If I unplug and replug the USB cable, it causes the MP to wake and the warning about power failure pops up.

Any ideas? It's not a crisis as the MP will sleep on battery for quite a while... but I'd still prefer it to wake and shutdown gracefully.
