View 2 RepliesThis started happening randomly earlier tonight, and I haven't managed to find a fix just yet.I was encoding a video file for quite awhile (I don't think that parts important, but I thought I'd include it anyway) and then I tried to play a youtube video. I noticed there was no sound, so I tried to up the volume using the Volume Up key on the keyboard. The volume visualisation appeared on the screen like normal (albeit a bit laggy), but the sound still didn't change, neither did I get the usual 'click' noise you get when you change the volume.I went looking into the sound options in the system prefs. only to find that the Output Sound device was headphones. For a test I plugged in some headphones to see what happened and, low and behold, the Output Sound device changed to the Internal Sound and my speakers were working again, but only with the headphones plugged in.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen surfing the net (like right now) or just letting it idle, my hard drive makes a slight "clunk" sound like the HD arm is hitting the edge of the case (or maybe starting up and shutting down?). There seems to be no loss of performance. I did a disk verify and everything is OK. Should I be concerned?
View 24 Replies View RelatedI have a person that sent along this video and it concerns me that a hard drive would make such a noise. It's unlike anything I've heard in a drive. He claims the original owner installed a new Seagate 7200rpm in the book, and that it mostly happens when loading a web-page on Safari.
Every time I look up "hard drive click" I get the SMS triggered "tink" but this notebook is not in motion and instead makes a "ca-chink".
For some odd reason, I have been experiencing some creaking when I move the display of my Unibody 15.5" Macbook Pro. At all. It just is very annoying, as it has a distinct plastiky sound to it, and it was not there to begin with. I don't know if this matters, but I have a Speck clear case that I used, but then I took it off because it seemed to be twisting the display a bit. Is this creaking a known issue with the Unibodies, or is it just because of the Speck case? I have never dropped my computer, and it has never been mistreated. It just leads its life on my desk or in my laptop bag. Any ideas?

For reasons unknown the internal sound option has disappeared from my MBA. The little speaker icon on the menu bar is grayed out and nothing comes from the jack. Internal speakers don't even show up as an option under sound output. I do use an Airport Express for external speakers but it's been playing happily with the internal speakers for months.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI put my 3 day old MBP to sleep last night with a 90% battery level (with the A/C adapter unplugged). I had calibrated the battery the day before. This morning, when I opened the lid, nothing happened. I thought this was odd. I then pressed the power button and heard about 1 second of the startup tone and then nothing. I repeated this twice more with the same result. I then plugged in the A/C adapter and the MBP booted up. The battery level was 86%. What do you think has caused this? Do I have a defective battery or something more serious?
View 22 Replies View RelatedOccasionally my Alu Macbook won't wake up from sleep. The keyboard backlight comes on, but the display won't wake. Sometimes the machine is quite hot and the fans are blasting too. Only a power cycle will fix it and then there's a message about OS X restarting unexpectedly.
However, twice now when I've run the battery down (as recommended to keep the battery healthy), and then put it to sleep and plug it in, when I try to wake it up later, it won't start. Powering on and off just lead to a little "click-whirr" and the power light pops on and off, but no action. I called applecare and they said to unplug it, take the battery out, leave it out for a bit, then put it back in, then plug it back in, and restart it. It worked (although the second such crash, it took two tries for unclear reasons). Needless to say, this is a bit frustrating. Is this a known problem? Should I do something to avoid it? Is it a lemon?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI would like to connect one of those Master/Slave Powersplitters to my Macbook Pro when I'm at home.
However, this has given me an issue.
When I choose Sleep, the Macbook goes to sleep, and a few seconds after the the splitter will turn off my screen, speakers, Printer and all other accesories.
But as soon as this happens, The Mac wakes up again.
For simplicity at home I have one USB connected to the mac, that goes to the built in USB hub of the screen.
I tried to disconnect everything from the hub leaving only the hub connected.
So over this weekend I upped the ram in my Macbook from the stock 2gbs-4gbs. Everything seems to be fine but now what's happening is when I close my Macbook lid and put it to sleep it won't wake up when I open it later. It seems like it wakes up as the light at the bottom goes out but there is no response from the keyboard or display. If I hold down the power button for 5 seconds then the Mac shuts off and I can boot it up as normal. I checked over the reporting screen when it reboots and it seem to be indicating a kernel panic occurred. The memory seems to be recognized and working but it wouldn't explain why my mac suddenly is freaking out. I've tried the SMC reset and now I'm going to try the PRAM reset. I figured I'd check here if anyone has any ideas. The type of Macbook I have is a 2.4ghz Alum. The memory is from MacSales.com OWC 4GB PC3-8500 DDR3 1066MHz DIMM Upgrade Kit This appears to be a house memory but i've had great luck from them before with this same brand.

View 13 Replies View RelatedSometimes after I logoff, I'll close the lid on my MBP. I always wait until I'm fully logged off before I do this. Later when I want to use my computer I open the lid, the keyboard backlight comes on, but I get no picture on the screen. If I take the machine into my office and connect it to my external monitor, I get no picture there either. The only way to get my computer back is to hold down the power button until it turns off and then turn it back on. Has anyone seen this issue? If so, do you know of a solution? I don't think it's been doing this since I bought it. It seems like it's been worse since the latest OS X patch, but I could be mistaken.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a 17" MacBook Pro that I bought recently (and even more recently restored) new from Apple. Ever since the 10.6.5 update I have noticed some problems. Almost every night, my MacBook Pro will wake up. I don't know if this is significant but I do have it connected to a cinema display, firewire hard drive, and an Apple bluetooth mouse and keyboard.
The only thing I would be suspecting is the hard drive but I don't know why since it is only used for time machine backups and those work normally. I do hear sometimes the hard drive spin up at night for a backup, but then it quickly shuts down after, which I believe is normal. Anyways, checking the console in the morning, I find this out of the usual:
